It’s COLD…

Probes have been searching this new planet for 10 years now and if it isn’t snowing, it’s raining ice. Hard to believe anything could live in a world like this. Yet, there are signs of life, everywhere. Strange footprints coming and going from all directions, but none leading the investigation of life anywhere. Of in the distance a faint silhouette of something, but by the time the probe reaches the area, the creature is gone. It must be well adapted to this environment. A few of the probes have been lost, either by weather, or something else, possible this baffling creature. I just wonder what it looks like.

DUE DATE: February 28th, 11:59 pm GMT - SUNDAY

Idea:

Create and model a creature capable of living in an icy environment.

Poly limit:

10,000 Tris Total. You can do whatever you want with these, just don’t get carried away and don’t exceed the 10,000 Tri Limit. Remember, the limit tells you where to stop, there is no minimum, so use as much of the limit as you see fit.

Textures:

-1 x 2048 Color Map
-1 x 2048 Reflection Map
-1 x 2048 Specular Map
-1 x 2048 Specular Color Map
-1 x 2048 Normal Map
-1 x 2048 Bump Map
-1 x 2048 Opacity (transparency) Map
-1 x 2048 Glow map
-1 x 2048 Glossiness map.

You can not chop it up into multiple smaller textures.

Textures can be hand-painted or you can use photographic sources. Do what you do.


Pedestals/Stands:

You do not have to create one, but if you do, understand that there is no texture or tri limit. You can go as crazy as you want, or keep it basic.


Restrictions:

-Joint entries are prohibited for this challenge

-Your entry must be specifically created for this challenge. Do not use any pieces from previous personal works.

-There are no lighting restrictions.

-All Game/Render Engines are allowed.

-You must create a W.I.P Thread to show off your work in progress.

Final Pictures:

Required In The Final Post (1 post per entry):

- 1 x Winning shot. This image should consist of your character depicted in its most awesome angle and pose.

- 1 x Beauty shot of your character. Feel free to put multiple angles of your character or just one big version or your character on this page. You are free to do whatever post effects you like on this image. Be careful how you do this though, simple is often better. It’s up to you.

- 1 x Construction shot of your character. Feel free to put multiple wire frame shots or just one big wire frame shot on this page. It is up to you.

- 1 x Texture sheet that includes all your used sheets squeezed into "one" sheet.

- Concept Sheet (if you have one)

btw big toe, can these creatures have something like a society? or are they just "simple" animals?
i was thinking of something with a slightly tribal feel to it.

Hi everybody,
I'm new in making low poly Characters and baking Maps,
But i'm considering entering this chalenge, cause i think it is the best way
to learn,

And i have one question, if you don't mind,

Do we have to use all those maps mencioned in the first post?
Or can we use the ones we already learn how to bake, with the limit of
one 2048 per "kind" of map?

The creature I'm designing is made up of a tribe of these creatures, can I post more than one model of the same species (with minor differences) in the final renders?

well, if all the little creatures make up the large creature, then each little creature would need to be counted for in the tri count and texture space. This also means, yes, you can have more than one, with differences in the final.

If you want to do just one main creature, you can then show different "main" creatures in your beauty shot. Your beauty shot can have touch ups, speacial effects and stuff like that. So it would be ok there.

When 10.000 tris is the limit, how many polys (four sides) are whe talking about?

Stoneking : 10,000 triangles is 10,000 triangles...you should NOT be counting polys. What software are you using? Someone here can show you how to count triangles instead of polys.

I'm using ZBrush and Maya for the mesh-sculpting and MODO for the render,
I thought (inside my ignorance LOL) that 10.000 triangles was like 5.000 polys divided in triangles....

If anyone can help me i really appreciate

You are partially correct - 10,000 triangles is the same as 5,000 quads.
BUT, a poly can be any number of triangles. So by counting polys, you may get an inaccurate number.

I don't know enough about Maya, but I'm sure that someone here can tell you how to count triangles in Maya.

i believe i'm going the right way,
So if i have 5000, quads and divide them in two, and by that making from
each quad two triangles, 1 face each, i'll probably do it correctly,
But if anyone can clear this for me i will appreciate very much

well in studio max you can press 7 to bring up the statistics which you can alter to include triangle count. never used maya though, it will probably be in some options list where you can specify what information it shows you. hope this helps

I just needed to clear that so i can stay with everything under the rules,

I have just another question, if you don't mind,

For the beauty shot, what can whe do, or what do you recomend for us to do,
To use the Low Poly, the High Poly or the Low with Displacement?

yeah, this competition is all about the game art, so the final images(beauty/winning) should only focus on that.

If you want to show off your high poly, do so in the contruction(wires) image.

Sorry to botter you with so many begginer questions, it's my first attempt for
a low poly, so i don't know too much about technical specss for game art, and i whant to make it inside the rules and specs,

2048 is the max, so you can go smaller if you want. Just remember, you can't chop up the texture space. You full model needs to be on one uv layout.

So, if you go smaller, 1024, that's fine.

the creature, and do whe need to put it's maps in the final presentation?
