I got a name but NOOOOOOO idea which direction to go. Wish me luck.

TNTxGRAVE

I kinda have a clue which direction to go. I have only tried speed modeling a few times and figured why not try a competition. Originally i was going to do a spider based drill and realized IF that's my first thought then a lot of people will be doing that. So I decided to base my design on reality and see what type of construction machines are drills. Here's some that caught my attention. I now plan on basing my design after these modes and instead of doing a standard DRILL i chose to go with the Tri-Cog-ish looking drill.

Very nice, I have these references in my reference folder but I did't dare to chose such complex one and I go for an simple one, but after we finish them we can open a construction yard :D

U start the modeling so good, so many details and clean mesh.

Pycho Mantis: I was going for more of a Rubber/Pliable material for the treads. So its can stretch and contract. Since this thing is on ice I figured most metals would make the machine too heavy and case it to fall through thin layers of ice. However if you have any suggestions, I am always all ears.

Hammering3D: Why not challenge yourself. The way i see it, I look at a machine and if i think to myself, there's no way I can model that in 240mins. My first instinct is "what else has more detail, and is more complex". I like pushing myself beyond my limits.

hammering3D
02-02-2010, 08:11 PM
true, if I can model mine detailed is complex to, but not like this :D

After I see the details U put in the tracks and the mesh so clean, I can't wait to see more progress, since I love those big metal machine.

CRAP!!! Damnit Tariq you had to be that guy. I didn't time myself but I know it wasn't more than half an hour. I began working on it when I started the new episode of Naruto Shippuuden, and was at this point by the time the episode was done. Needless to say I had to re-watch the episode because I didn't get to see ANY of it, I got sucked into modeling tank treads. I was in "the zone" man. All u see is a lot of modifiers and a lot of "Ctrl C" and "Ctrl V"

Hopefully I can finish the 240mins of modeling before the superbowl and give myself 2 weeks to texture. I only had time to model today because "cup-o-noodles" infected me at work yesterday with the h-virus and i had to take today off work. All day I've been battling a severe cold, constant head aches, a random twitchy eye, my girlfriend's unruly cat (thats in heat btw), and a dog named ninja ( i swear his name is ninja).

Add 20 more minutes.

Make sure you keep tabs on your time spent, get a docked stopwatch into your software of choice or a normal egg timer for half hour intervals. A few years back I lost track of my time when speed modelling and realised I'd spent nearly 3 hours on a 90 min SMC.

As for the creation so far it's looking really very good, nicely detailed and very well made. Looking forward to seeing the direction you take this.

Kind Regards

03-02-2010, 10:49 AM
Ahhhh yes the time bug...lol. I spent about a half hour on the treads. I made about 6 basic shaped pieces and did the ole add rivets and such technique. The majority of the time was spent adding edge loops for smoothing purposes. So all in all i am about 50 minutes into the model.

BAD!!! ClassicGamer (slaps wrist) you don't spend 3hrs on a 90minute model. Go sit in the corner and think about what you did...lol.
I'll be VERY careful not to do that.

Rachel vd M
03-02-2010, 10:54 AM
That looks absolutely awesome!

i am also curious on how you managed to model that quickly,
Could you maybe explain those awesome techniques, or is there a tutorial somewhere on the net that can describe your style?
Im looking to improve my skills over time :smug:

TNTxGRAVE
03-02-2010, 11:05 AM
I find it easy to model fast when you spend about 15minutes looking at your concept and actually model the part you want to work on in your head. Visualize every tool you will possibly use for each specific part. so when you get into 3d Max or whatever package you use, You wount waste time trying things, in a competition like this you HAVE to start modeling with a clear idea of what you want to do and HOW you will do it. And i also own about 120GB of tutorials and 200GB of reference photos.

Rachel vd M
03-02-2010, 01:14 PM
haha thx for the advice, im also gathering up on turorials, though because of school (how ironic) i havn't got time to study them ;)

TNTxGRAVE
03-02-2010, 01:35 PM
Rachel: Lol I graduated school about 7 months ago. To be honest, about 80% of what i know was learned through tutorials. So go buy as many Gnomon and digital tutors discs as you can afford. Find alll the 89326473674673472734 free 3d tutorials on the interwebs. Trust me it helps, but you have to watch them and study them.
btw, what school do you go to? I went to The Art Institute of Washington.

I found out my phone has a stop watch feature. So I put it to good use. These are the new additions i was able to make in 65mins. The main body is just the blocked out shapes. Most of my time was spent on the cockpit. I spent about 10mins box modeling it and wasnt happy with the results and then i realized how much of an idiot i was for not using planes, spline, and booleans to get the desired look. i was in a hurry to try and get as much of the overall piece blocked out. The ground is a simple Plane with a displace modifier and a height map. I spent quite a bit of time tweaking my materials and test rendering (hope that doesnt count). So far i have spent 115minutes modeling. I have burned almost half my time in 2 days and i still have SOOOOOOOOOOO much to do. *sigh* its depressing...lol. Its late i am off to bed.

Comments and Crits pls.

Hey man,
It's looking great! As this is my first contest I'm not sure how close to the theme they try to keep things, but as you model your drill it mentioned drilling or being able to drill different sized holes. Not sure if they're sticking to this or not, but it looked as if you "may" be going for a one drill model.

I'm gonna have to pick your brain on some of those modeling techniques by the way:) Youtube is getting more scarce as I get into more specific and difficult things.

hammering3D
04-02-2010, 07:51 AM
it not said that it must drill different holes size, but that u can model any type of drill because they are many types that can drill many size of holes, so u can chose any of them.

Kiwicanta7: Feel free to send me a private message ANYTIME if you run into difficulties. As to your question about the drill bit. There are different types of drill bits and drill sizes out there. Its pretty much up to you to pick one or a combination of bits and sizes. I am choosing to stay away from the traditional "coil" drill, i am giving my machine a tri-cone drill bit. these bits are commonly used for drilling wells and used in the arctic for breaking through the ice. Tri-cone bits work best on hard formation rocks such as hard shale, calcites, mudstones, cherty lime stone. In some instances Ice has been known to be packed sooo densely that its harder that most rocks. So i figured in an ICE PLANET this type of drill bit would be used break the surface of lakes and other bodies of water.

here are some Examples of Tri-Cone drill bits
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y44/TNTxGRAVE/tri-conedrillbit.png

Hammering3D: Lol i just realized that you answered Kiwicanta's question.

ClassicGamer: Thanks. I am using the daylight system, and mental ray. Nothing really special

Most days before I start working at my job, I take 15 minutes to do a simple warm up art exercise. Since my main Max file was created in Max 2010 and at work we use max 2009. I HATE the fact that Autodesk products aren't backwards compatible. I mean why cant u open a Max 2010 file in Max 2009? Adobe does it, why cant you Autodesk...whyyyy?. Ohhhh yea I forgot, they want our monies. But thats a discussion for another day.
Anyway I will merge the drill bit into the main max file when I get home tonight.

So far I am about half way into my modeling...130mins total

@tntxgrave - i ahve good news for you, and bad news.
bad first - your drillhead wonīt work. the teeth from the wheels are at oppsite directions, which means a peak will face another peak, and a valley another valley. they have to interlock, like cogwheels. at least it looks so from this pov. but that can be fixed easily.

now good news. when max 2011 will come ot, itīll backward compatible. so you can work with older programms (starting at 2010).

If you could save the image of the drill i posted and illustrate over it what you mean. It would be helpful. Thanks man.

the way you have the teeth now the hole on the one gear doesn't line up with the tooth on the other so the drill won't be able to spin.

Sorry I haven't gotten to posting an update. Because there isn't one yet. I got home from work and couldn't stand to look at my home computer screen, let alone 3d max. I work as a 3D modeler and Animator for a local gaming and simulation lab. So after looking at 3d max for 9 straight hours i think i deserved a little rest. So i came home and went to bed.

I took the day off work due to the fact that we are expecting 20 - 24 inches of snow. So i will take 1 hour later on today to work on this model. Expect my update later. Thanks guys.

yeah you got it, and keep in mind, that the wheels need different sizes and locations. they cant be all at teh same height, becuase then the wheels would stuck. i am not an engineer, and i guess they have formulas for stuff liek gears etc, but i think with trial and error you will get it done. just keep in mind that all 3 drillheads need different size, maybe angle, and location.

Ok so 3D Total Forums seemed to be down for like 27364726747682347 hours today. I finally was able to get on. I have noticed that speed modeling over a period of time is MUCH easier than doing it all in one sitting. I am amazed at how much I got done. I would never be able to do that much in one sitting. I get bored and distracted if I work for more than 2hrs straight. I usually end up on Youtube, Geekologie, Aint-it-Cool or some random Anime site to watch something.

Well I worked for 80 minutes today. I blocked out the rest of the machine, and began some minor detail work. I only have 30 minutes left to model. I still have to do the wiring, Solar Panels, the block that connects the drill to the rest of the arm so its not just floating, and the interior of the cockpit. Actually i might just tint the windows enough so you cant tell there is no interior...lol Ohhh mannn thats alott of work for half an hour. Hopefully i can do it. so here is the progress I promised earlier.

Thanks soooo much guys for all your positive responses. I never realized how much my modeling speed had improved. While in school i did alot of speed modeling excersizes to improve my techniques. Now for the past 2 years i have been working as a 3d modeler. that means modeling for 9hrs everyday non stop. So i guess i have picked up a few techniques to improve my speed and meet my deadlines.

My goal is to finish up my last 30mins of modeling tomorrow so that i can watch the superbowl. i plan on unwrapping and texturing this model. seems like i will have 20 days to do that. even though i absolutely LOATH unwrapping (like most modelers i know).

I worked on my model for 15minutes today just placing the Cable Holders, Solar Panels (on back) and the drill connection blocks on the top and bottom of the arm.

If you were unaware..I intended for the big piece that wraps around the back of the machine to also be a solar panel.

The Original animated movie back in the mid 80s (86 i think). The scene when Unicron wants to rebuild Megatron into Galvatron. Unicron says "you belong to me...Now" and Megatron says back "I BELONG TO NOBODY" (but in a more epic way)

That's incredible! I love the drill itself, it looks menacing. Can't wait to see it textured! :D

Thanx thefmilyofblood. you should learn to embrace those tricky N-Gons, they are not so bad once you get to know them.

I do get to know them, as I'm carpet bombing them to death with some neat, organized quads. I much prefer them when N=4

Very nice work with the texture, the final composition is great, with the sky and ice environment.

I have so many favorites in this challenge but for sure this is the favorite of the favorites :D

I go finish mine, but I did't texture it, and try some renders with metal shaders and like U did with ice environment and sky, but I am disappointed so I think I go for toy look, I will see.
