Well the name is a bit generic because I'm not sure what kind of design I'm going for, here you have some basic first sketches. Design may change. And still thinking the best way to approach the drill helix.
ola pablo
to be honest a mix of both would be awsome.

I agree with bgen a mixture would rock! From your concept sketches it could be a cool hybrid walking driller mecha! :)
Looking forward to seeing how this one turns out.
Kind Regards
CG.

Yes, I have to work on it a bit more, but you're right, I'll do some sketches mixing both designs, thanks mates for watching.
I hope you're feeling better CG.

you could get away with having it use concentrated lasers or even a stream of plasma as its drilling method. You dont need a helix drill bit. Just be mindful that it take a huge amount of energy to power a beam of light for that long. So keep in mind the solar nature of power for the drill.

Yes you're right, but not for nothing in particular, but even if it is a futuristic mecha, I don't know why, but I like the idea of something more...physic than a laser or something, but I like the idea though...arrrrg, I have to do lot of sketches haha.
Thanks for your comment TNT.
Today I went to a exhibition of star wars scale models, it was awesome dude, and I saw lot of inspiration there, what a pity I didn't take my camera.

Some ideas before going to bed, I thought of a mecha tail with eyes/camera/sensors at its end. And some kind of hydraulic tubes on its legs to be totally stable when drilling? Hope you like it, still thinking cool designs.

New sketches of the leg detail and the more spherical version of the mecha, which one do you like more?

Hey mates, I've changed the design a bit but I couldn't scan the drawings, I'll post them with the next update if I can put my scanner to work.
I changed the style to a more dreadnought looking specially with the legs, to make them look more robust. Because I didn't like the weak aspect of the old ones.
I think they're ok now, robust and stable. Hope you like it, this is what I've got a the moment, still 90 minutes to go.

haha I like to torture you mates :D
No, seriously, today was a "bad" day. I have some kind of flu, and even like that, was trying to buy some flight tickets but I couldn't, so I had to do looooooooots of phone calls, I've gotten really stressed, so bed time for today. It took me hours, so I couldn't move a single vertex of my model, I hope tomorrow will find the time, really hope so Baldur.
I like to do the things more continuously and not this that I do. If all goes as I plan, tomorrow will end the model, and unwrap. And along this weekend I'll paint some textures.
Cya soon, thanks for watching this.
oh sorry to hear that, get better soon.

Agree, thank you :) I'm doing some architectural viz now, when I finish the job I'm doing a mini tut for the new section about how to do a clay render like that in modo.

Something like this? :)
I loved the idea of making the driller red-hot because of high revolutions and friction, and include an ice pedestal(not included in the modelling time, though if its necessary I can include, it didn't take more than 2-3 minutes to do).
Did some post in PS, just added some glow and minor colour corrections.
Hope you like it :)
really nice! love that ice material very cool looking machine

Thank you Sarn. Glad you like it.
For the ice material I started from a material I downloaded at Luxology's repository. ( So want to thank Modo user 3DViz for that cool material), and then changed some parameters to fit the look I wanted(color more cyan, less absorption, and adding some auto-illumination mainly).
The rest of materials had been painted by me in Photoshop.
If you have any suggestion I'm opened to it.

just perfect, the concept, the modeling, the details.
I like that is very proportioned and how to say, it's massive, the feet and the drill and all body parts ... is not fragile one. Perfect!
I say this in my threads so far, this is one of my favorite.
Impressive works in this challenge.

Thanks hammering for your nice words.
I agree there are some impressive works this challenge, and that's good for threedy and for us, cause this has to encourage us to work harder next time!
