Ok, I have a pretty sweet idea and I'm xferring it into digital format now, but I want to touch it up. Visual updates to follow shortly.

::EDIT::
I finally got the scanner to work so I uploaded the concept to here!

The scanner isn't working, so I jumped right to sculpting, so here's my WIP. It's a worm and the three dots are its eyes, the holes in the head are placeholders for the mandibles also attached.

Ok, quick update before I retire for the night, birthday party really hampered how much I got done tonight. This IS low poly, I invested about 6k tris into the head and the rest will be for a partialy submerged body which will be worked over with much Zbrush detail to make up for the 3.5k body. Only a normal map and Vray lights in this scene, diffuse will come after full modeling is done.

looking good dude, keep those updates coming.

UPDATE!: woo. Ok here's the latest; another quick vray render as well as a wire attached. It looks a little heavy, but its hovering around 8k tris atm. Leaves space for what little odds and end I'm going to add.

wow, looks really awesome so far! Pretty frightening worm
Maybe more mandible/arm/feeler things down his stomach? Or spines down his back

Been doing a lot of unwrapping and foundation texture work, but just as a bump to the thread, I was giving some though on how to flavor up the outline a bit, take a pick guys!

#1: Short coarse bristles
#2: Long flowing tendrils
#3: Classic spikes

I would go with number 3, the spikes fit more to how the character looks right now.

Cheers.

I think hair and fur is more appropriate for the theme. I pick #1

My fiance actually had the gall to suggest a mix of #1 and #3! HOW DARE SHE! What do you think? 1+3 = win?

Sadly this will probably help little considering the other comments, but I thought 2 would look the best...

I would also find this a very good choice.

so.....Win :D

I also like 2 as well. Now that everybody has picked all the options, it should really make it easy for you to pick :)

Either way, great progress so far, and probably whatever option you pick will work.

...spikes are boring, fur could work, but there's gonna be a lot of fur flying. I'm really liking the tendrils tho so...#2.

Hey guys, quick question: I'm using VRay renderer in Max and I'm trying to do an opacity map and I've found how to do it with the refract settings in the material editor; but I have a second issue that is simultaneous, I have a secondary bump map separate from the normal map and VRay materials don't support two map slots for normal/bump. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

:::EDIT::: Nevermind, I bow to Google; figured it out ^_^

Just for you guys; an update! There's still a lot to do and I've decided to toss in the bristles (it seems like a pretty common insect attribute and seeing how hes a worm... although... he does have a tongue....) I also plan on squeezing in the tentacles (I like them) but I haven't decided on how to approach it yet, alpha'd planes or actual geometry (depends on how many tris I have left)

looks great!
Very solid iceworm

Are there going to be more of those mandible things? Or feelers or something on his belly?

setschaos

there's going to be more mandibles on the head, but as for the rest of the body, probably not. I just deleted the rest of the mandibles for easier unwrapping, never got around to actually giving them any diffuse detail or copying them back on the head just yet. Next update will probably be a close-to-done diffuse/normal/bump/opacity/gloss render as well as a concept tot he pedestal.

I've got a pretty good idea of where I'm going next, but as always, any suggestions would be warmly welcomed.

does he move in the snow or does he wait in a hole for prey?
just wondering incase he needs something for moving.

looking pretty good.maybe stick a hot glowing thing at the front of his head (like a deep ocean fish)....for attracting people in a snow storm...look over there...lets go for the light.hahaha
it can also meld the snow in front of it so he can move throught the snow.....and i'm a big fan of glowing things ;)

Ok, shoot me, so I lied about the next update XD Here's an update!

@Strict9: It's going to be a tunneler like an earthworm. Not sure how they get around other than wriggling and eating the dirt, I figure that the mandibles could cut through ice, but the glowing light idea wouldn't be a bad one, but I think with the tentacles, it would be a little much.

Let me know what you think about the tentacles, what could be fixed? I also have a decent amount of tris left (2k) if anyone has any suggestions. I will be tossing a spear in its side like in the concept I think. but other than that, any thoughts?

love the concept. the tentacles are cool especially the ones with fur. love the teeth as well. maybe the fur on the neck could be improved increasing the white value of the alpha map? what are you planning for the rest of the body, the tail?

Hehehe this part of the "worm" looks great. I really like, what you did with those tentacles on it's head. Can almost feel the dynamic. Only "crit" is the light creating this over-bloomed effect on the alpha planes of the fur.

do you have a design for the rest of the body, or is it going to be mostly just "worm" till the tail?

setschaos
10-02-2010, 12:12 PM
I'm actually going to have the worm submerged to convey the subterranean habits. I guess its a sort of cheat, but I can definitely create a tail but I think that if I did it would look pretty plain. There's already borderline too much 'excitement' in the model itself.

Thanks guys for the comments, I guess I'll have more this evening, something just came up and my whole day is trashed.

I like the colors you went with. Like Sadone mentioned, you light is looking a little overblown so watch that, otherwise, looks good.

Hi!
I just love the colors you have:D
And its also an original idea, making a "worm".
And since its a "worm" you could use that 2k to finish his lower end up. So he could emberge completely from the snow, and scare the sh*t out of people \o/

Good luck!

Ah very cool worm. As Cordero say, you've made a good colors choice. And design too!!
