dissapearing gizmo

Hi.

i've recently started learning 3ds max 10, using the free trial download. i'm utterly stuck as to why my 'move' tool won't let me use the Z axis. I was working my way through a modelling tutorial when the gizmo just was'nt there anymore. instead i just get the y and x axis enabled in red. i've spent the last few hours getting frustrated over this, trying to work out why and how but would anyone be able to help before i throw my monitor out the window please?

the X key toggles the gizmo

And + and - change the size of the gizmo if it shrinks which can sometimes happen
