View Full Version : Joseph Pomeisl - Snow Creature - ???
Joseph Pomeisl
04-02-2010, 06:33 AM
possible names: Icey Slater, Bing Bing Bop, Tall like a Tree, Halfsquat
Bounced back and forth between zbrush and max and arrived at what you see below:
...he'll end up with mostly hard edges, I think; kinda like icey blocky chunks. Maybe some stone elements, too?
Still unsure of going with horns or not.
Scalewise going for rather large...

Joseph Pomeisl
04-02-2010, 04:04 PM
so horns and smoke are a go:D
BigToe: started from zspheres, haven't done that in forever, I like how fast it was. only 28 days hath February so we'll see.
... gonna try having sections of his body be semi-opaque with some glowing ice fire or debri in there; have something up later.

Sketches and such so far look good, nice silhouette. Sounds like you've got some cool ideas with the ice fire and such as well.

I'm so in love with over sized upper bodies :D I reeally dig the whole silhouette right now. Smoke, fire, ice... nice stuff.. can't wait:D

Warlock 279: thanks, not gonna be asy but it'll be worth it to keep those elements in there; tri count is 300 over as of now.
It'll be fixed - maybe it was those 12 extra loops at the elbow:D
Cordero: thanks alot, man. me neither...
strict9: do winks equal sarcasm?:D? how ya been?
anima3d: :D
...got rid of the tail, wasn't liking it. smoke and fire type stuff will done after the sculpting methinks. still no name.

...no smoothing, 2-sided faces; skylight, omni's at each eye and elbow(inside the mesh)
http://img37.imageshack.us/img37/9404/up2turnaround.jpg
...same as above, but with 60% opacity

that's what we artists call cool.
edit: hope you don't mind, but I think I'm going to steal this idea, whenever I get a chance to use it.

Looking really awesome. Like the idea alot. I think the lower legs may be 'falling apart' a bit too much, they look a bit fragile.

12-02-2010, 10:52 PM
Really great concept and execution! Im lovin it!
One critique though. You should beef up his legs. Compared to his upper body he has chicken legs lol. They are well defined but maybe a little bit bigger?

That is looking amazing!
I can't wait to see the finished creation!!

Amazing. Very creative. Should be a lot of work.
Also think the legs look very fragile, they give the impression that they will break.
I will monitor closely. Good luck.

First, I promise to respon to everyone's comments when I have a real update:D
Second, check this out:
http://josephpomeisl.webs.com/Gun_Viewer.html
the web player is free and takes seconds to install...
**it's ALT + LMB to rotate....**
...so, I tried putting something like this out for the Army of One challenge, haven't worked on the idea since
but a guy over at GA put a great one together and it got me in the mood to start again:D
...missing a move feature, but working pretty well. It's a wip model, for testing.
Since Unity is free I think this could be a great way for lots of people to share/display their models...
I script for crap and got this together:D
In the future I'd like to get stuff like buttons to toggle wires, texture, normal maps...
Buzzy
14-02-2010, 02:34 AM
that is SWWEEEEETTTT!!!
wow dude, I need to get this working for myself.
I noticed that had spec...does this support shaders?

BiG ToE-3DT: :D steal away
strict9:sarcasme; lowest level of spelling, too, I see:D You know I love you, Baz.
Buzzy: thanks, man. I'm sure you'll put me to shame one way or another...
roel: :)
armians: hey, thanks alot, fella. and I'll try.
Sadone ::)
Jeremiah_Bigley: me, too. there was only a tiny head sketch that started the whole guy, so it's kinda been just rolling with it...
chris_solo: thanks, buddy.
SR_6274: wow, that's nice of you to say. Thank's, SR.
lampshadehead & bakuryu06: you're both right and I tried to fix them up.
Dark Flick: exclamation point!!! :D
snakeeaterjns: see above....and it's been abit of work, nothing terrible. we'll see how it goes.
dark_maggot: me, too.:D rather disapointed with the last couple outings, definitely have to finish this one.
Randize: explicitive deleted... your enthusiasm makes me happy:D
chris_solo: I love you. I would never forget to tell you about it.
...got him under 10k, with enough leftover for the smoke and whatnot. Started on the zbrushing...

i surrender!!! whoa dude, this is very nice. loving the rock details and all.
Cool stuff! I might be the perspective but the legs and feet seem a bit small. And maybe you could make 1 of the toes a bit bigger (to break the repetition)?

awesome looking character, love the spikes on the back.
Joseph, don't you listen to these people. They all lie. Honestly, I'm surprised you even post this crap up, you should hang your head in shame. You should just pack it all up and e-mail me your talent because you are obviously wasting it... OH Shiz, sorry man I was look at my own blank screen wondering I wasn't getting anything done when I wrote this, I don't think I've moved in days I think I went into a temporarily coma or blind from over exposure to pure awesomeness or something. :D

Great model so far!
The hips are the only thing that bothers me. Seems too low to me. The proportions are great, except the placement of the hips...I feel they should be nudged upward ever-so-slightly. Or maybe his thighs just seem a touch too short. Yeah, I think that's the issue...his thighs just look too short for his calves. His knee and calf need nudged down a little bit. Forget I ever mentioned the hips. I'm not sure why I just didn't delete the hips bit while typing this post. In fact, why am I still typing at all? Who knows....

...In fact, why am I still typing at all? Who knows.... Your mind was temporarily melted by the pure awesomeness of it all.
Joseph - Wow! That's looking hot, in a very cold icy kinda way. Buzzy touched on my only real concern, I wonder if its not the camera angle that's making the legs look a little funky? Detailing and shape and everything all over looks pretty awesome.

Hey Joseph!
I think, this is a really helpful thread! You show us some of your techniques for free, and they are really awesome.
You are also doing a great progress, and the results are sweet!:D
So five stars from me, if that feature is working right now:D
(of course, i'm looking forward on the textures, and the effects you have in your mind)

Very interesting model with a killer design! Are you thinking of a glow seeping forward through all the cracks? Like the antronachs in Oblivion...

You don't actually have to present the final piece on a game engine, you also have the option of rendering it on max or which ever software package you use.

By far my favorite ice creature from this competition :) wish I had that kind of talent and creativity :D. I'm having Artist's Block right now, going through all the various posts from everyone is really helping me break through it. Hope I'll be ready for the next one :D. Keep up the awesome work!

Raul: Raauuuuuuuul! (...phillies fan...):D thanks for the kind words.
roel: not the perspective, the legs're short; pulled the thigh up abit and that seemed to help that out. thanks for saying something.
xxxcubanxxx: :) thanks for answering sagiarts question, too.
dhin: I'm surprised you even post this crap up, you should hang your head in shame
...that's how I feel everyday...
Buzzy: :) grabbed all the verts from above halfway up the thigh and moved them up abit. looks better.
Warlock 279: thanks, man. see above about the hip/leg issues...think it's sorted out now.
Joseph Pomeisl: you're an idiot. go hang your head in shame.
Martin_x: hey, thanks alot, Martin:)
chris_solo: your love is the greatest gift of all. just know that it's recipricol.
Cordero: :D thanks, fella. I'm looking forward with you. We'll see how it turns out.
sagiarts: from that sheet only #4 was mental ray; and the plan at this point is to use a Standard Blinn for it's support of most map types -
some of the test mats were missing opacity and specular slots and I didn't want to lose a finer control over those two....and what cuban said:D
hulahuga: see above about material... and glowing cracks would look nice for sure, tried to pull something like that off in the pics below.
Edragon: thanks; very nice of you:) hope you can get in on the next one, too. I also like chocalate milk.
AndrewQ: it seems that previous foot shape always end up on my models; not sure why...
lampshadehead: thought they were interesting as well. check the reply to sagiarts above regarding end material choice...
Buzzy: yessum.
got the bakes done (decimated the subtools and baked them individually in max), made temp. pedastal, rigged him (biped), and tried some stuff out:D
...kinda strut/beatdown feel, I hope.
same lighting/material setup, slighlty different angles...

22-02-2010, 06:53 AM
Holy..... That is nuts. How do you keep up with the uv map?! Craziness!
looking great. only thing can say is to go for a more dynamic pose. Atm the characters back geometry which i think adds alot to the character, should have more space in the render. that ice texture is NICE! NICE! NICE! =]
Buzzy
22-02-2010, 08:55 PM
Very very rad.
I would like to see some more color.
And the snow isn't working for me...too big and blobby-looking
Great model and pose so far!
Krallis
22-02-2010, 08:59 PM
Pretty damn cool.
As above the snow looks a bit too much like wobbly bricks.
And it could do with some colours, subtle yellows or greens maybe?

Your ice-creature rocks. I have not had the chance to follow all the concepts this month but yours tops the list of favorites.

Joseph Pomeisl
28-02-2010, 09:11 PM
Arkadius: thanks, bro:)
AlexanderL: that's pretty cool; welcome to threedy. Plan on joining in on a challenge or two?
AndrewQ: render to texture a multi/sub object mat(all 100% S.I.), give each body part a distinct color - it doesn't hurt that most of the uv's are aligned up is up, etc.
Also, screengrab the mat ID rollout - easier than switching back to max to doublecheck...
http://img195.imageshack.us/img195/161/selections.jpghttp://img535.imageshack.us/img535/1174/rollout.jpg
E4sY: thanks, and you're right. tries to get a render in there with more back showing...
the rig for him worked pretty well, but if you think about the range of motion
- it's a pretty small distance until the pieces get too far apart and it looks awful:D
Buzzy: :D fixed the snow, I think. too big of particle with too much motion blur = bad.
Krallis: thanks. got some more color in there; it's still a pretty subtle texture -
the more things I tried either took away from the look I was going for or were barely noticeable
(my lack of painting skills/understanding of color that's most likely to blame)
buzz001: hey, thanks alot, buzz. very nice of you.
Edragon: ...sparta? sorry, I've got nothing:D
Insania: one :D desreves another :D thanks, man.
