Hei folks,

I've seen so many great entries here so I've decided to add my two cents as well.

Looking forward to a great competition.

Great stuff so far!

The jaw, and the chin bothers me a bit, seems he is missing some bones there.

Thank you guys.

Cordero, I'll check the chin area tomorrow. I've added a more prominent chin right now... mabe that's enough, but I'll see if it doesn't destroy the whole face, I'll add it.

Here is another full figure shot. I need to tweak some regions were there are still artefacts visible and need to work out the hand.

Hopefully I'll be able to stay inside the poly limit.

Looks cool to me!
I like the rocks/crystal/ice stuff all around his body. I really like the feet too!:D
I think you will make the poly limit easily.
More!:D

Really nice looking so far. I too love the ice crystals coming from him. Since I'm going to be doing something similar with the crystals, it's interesting to see how you are doing yours.

Keep up the great work!

Thanks for all the fish, guys!

I've decided to give him a more battered look and add a bit more weight to the body by adding more ice strokes to make the surface a lot more bumpy and to reduce the "clean", flat surfaces as well.

Hi,

I'm close to finish the lowpoly and was curious who it might look with a normal map applied to.

Wow, this last render image looks great!
Congratulations,
Do you mind sharing your render setup?
Cheers

Your low poly looks perfect. If I didn't know better, I would of thought it was your sculpt.

Great job so far, I want to see more!

Looks totally great. Is this guy supposed to be able to walk? Does he attack with his shoulder?

Hi everybody,

I thank you all for your neat comments.

Stoneking: It's not a big deal. When I'm around later in the evening I'll post a shot and a small explanation.

SR_6274: ^^ Thank you, mate!

Raul: I'll add some more shots when I finish the whole lowpoly.

Cordero: You're problably right but it's getting tight. Since the body is around 6.000 Tris at the moment I think I'll end up with approximately 9.000.

lampshadehead: That's just a wip. He'll definitely have another leg and an arm ^^

Allright finished the complete body today and will now start to unwrap it by hand instead of using Adaptive UV Tiles.

Here are some shots of the Ice guy (8.987 Tris).

So here we go. I don't know, whether I should go with a realtime rendering (1st picture) or a mental ray rendering (2nd). Any suggestions?

The translucent ice looks really good in the MR render. Overall the MR looks better. The realtime one is too "hot"...the colors are really really punched out.

Good job so far!

hey.. that looks really great!
I don't know if you can use non-realtime render engines, but you can use shaderFX or Xoliul shader as viewport renderer..
mentalray render looks awesome!

PS. thanks for your previous render tutorial ;)

Both render looks cool i think. I like the intensity in the real time, and i love the opacity stuff on the mental ray.
You got the ice texture/surface pretty well, grats on that.

Your ice look really great!!
think you should go with Mental Ray.

I think the colours are a little over saturated in both renders, much more so in the realtime render. The solid chunks of ice would probably be more white than blue. I do like the solidness of the realtime render. The idea of transparency sounds pretty cool, but it makes him seem a little vulnerable. Looks good though, you did a nice job of getting all the details into the low poly model. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for all your positive input. So the decision which way to go was pretty easy. I'm close to finish. Just changed the light and tweaked the ice again. Now I need to add some Postwork and render another "Beauty shots".

Hey Mr. Sadone :)
Looks awesome man, congratulations,
Love it!
Good luck

How do you make the UV layout so well used, i mean spacewise,
What software is used for that?

Cheers

Looks good. Think u need a more contrasting background. Seems like the character is blending into it too much atm.

kogen
26-02-2010, 03:04 PM
Hei Mr. Stoneking,

thank you, glad you love it. The UV Layout as well as the modeling was a pain in the... donkey and were both done in Silo 2. I do like pelt-mappng in Silo but you have to arrange the UVs manually if you don't want to loose too much space.

E4sy: Thank you too. Actually in my initial concept the background was reddish but that lead to an odd look with the ice-material making it look almost like lava. Now the blue background adds to the tonal value of the ice. I've put the purple falloff to seperate the character a bit more.

Sadone: I understand you used the background color to help with the ice, but I wonder if you could try something else. What I have in mind is this, saving out the image as an png file. This would allow you to just save the character and base, leaving the background behind. So you would still get the background color to show in the ice, but it wont show in the saved image.

This would only work if you set the environment to the color you want. I think you have a plan in the background, so it may not work. But you could play with it.

If you make changes, don't worry, you can edit your final entry up until the deadline.
