View Full Version : A Stroller, A Chair, and A Time Trial Bike
I wasn't sure where to post because all three of my projects will have a 3d digital model for it, but for now I'm just doing sketches - so I'll post it here
Project 1- Stroller
A baby stroller design
Deliverables:
Complete design with all mechanisms and part drawings, final render, 1/2 scale physical appearance model, and full scale mechanism demo model.
Project 2- Chair
A computer/lounge chair design
Deliverables:
Full functional physical model using plywood laminating, cnc, casting, carbon fiber layup, and upholstery.
Project 3- Time Trial Bike
Custom time trial bike frame and fork with standardized performance components.
Deliverables:
3d solidworks model of all components along with a final render.
...all done within 3 months - I need caffeine already
Here are some early concepts of the stroller:

All models are interesting but I think you also should think about keeping the use of materials to a minimum. Most of your models use wide shapes, with solid form which is good at a designing level but it will choke in manufacturing. I think you should orient yourself towards slimmer versions, with much curvier shapes for resistance and slimmer for less use of materials.
Avatar-3DT: Yeah, I agree - the volumetric shapes are easier, but I'll be headed with a slim design. I'm going to start working toward some more realistic directions soon.
Here's a start of my chair... I'm not sure what I want to do with the legs yet... or the support structure or the feet or the partridge in a pear tree - I'm going to do some sketches for them and hopefully finish the cad by Friday so I can start making it.

Your futuristic designs are quite cool and I wouldn't drop them so easily, maybe just work around the same designs with slimmer shapes. The chair look okay so far but there is no arms support which is a minus. Maybe the legs of the chair and the arms should be one piece. And perhaps make the back support from a lot of small pieces that could adjust around the body as you lay back on the chair. Not a lot, just give out just a bit to shape around the body for comfort.

Beautiful char and a really nice start, I agree with Avatar it will be better in the long run o go down as realistic a path as possible. I really like the concept sketchwork too, very nice indeed. Looking forward to much more :)
sorry for the slow updates, things are a bit hectic - I'll try to keep the updates coming.
Thanks for the feedback Avatar-3dt, much appreciated.
Thanks for the kind words chunkymunky.
Here's my rough idea for the stroller project:
Everything pivots around a central axis that is empty - so the pieces rotate around via a ring track. To collapse it, you grab the handle and everything folds into place.
Coming soon: perspective sketch, front ortho, foam core physical mockup, possibly a quick demo animation
I did a quick animation of the folding (blatantly named on vimeo). When I have a final model, I'll attempt to do a decent animation showing all the mechanisms.

The stroller looks good at a first glance but I think you'll be giving yourself quite a few headaches since many of those folding would have to have some kind of blocking mechanisms to be able to both maintain rigidity and fold like that.
Nice set of pictures.
Avatar-3dt: You're right about the headaches, but hopefully it will be worth it in the end. I just want to try and have something a bit different from what's already out there.
I've been working on figuring some of the mechanical bits out. Here's a quick mock-up I did last night showing the standard unfolded, reclined, and folded positions.

Looking great so far. Keep at it and good luck!
Couldn't sleep, so I sketched a car. I normally don't sketch cars and it shows, many things are way off.

There are some small issues in perspective but thats an awesome car considering you don't like sketching them :D

I like that car, more of a stylised version which makes it look cool :)
Thanks guys
Practicality killed the simplicity of my stroller. Need sleep .

That looks pretty sweet :D Ferrari for the infant.
Thanks Avatar
Sorry for all the 3d in the 2d forums, the remainder will be physical models and graphic design layout for presentations.
Now commencing final physical model build... 2 weeks remaining
Final(ish) render
ZPrint import (22.5 cu. in. = $112.50 USD)
Chair mold and plywood forming done this weekend
I have no idea what's happening with the bike :hmm:

Progress...
Very classy design, i like this chair best. Not sure about stroller though, I think stroller will be more about practicality and safety measures rather than design. Keep it up!

Exciting :D maybe after you assemble it you could make a small video with a turn around and some movement (how it closes up and opens and such).
Thanks Avatar. I plan on doing an animation showing all the folding and stuff.
I lost my mind from lack of sleep... so after rigging a baby to put it in the stroller, I turned it into a zombie with red demon eyes

Lol, looks like me after a couple of days without sleep :D
We were evacuated from our apartment building today, so I haven't been able to work on my models. So I worked on a few other things, then got frustrated and made another attempt at sketching a "car"... :wall:

Sweet render of the stroller and that car sketch is awesome :)

Hi Noyb,
Firstly before I start, excellent work. The concepts look polished, and I even think the car looks smooth as ****.
However, the baby stroller is falling way off the mark. Looking at that design, I see these possible flaws.
-Front wheel hits curb, toddler hits curb. It looks to me as though the balance is too far forward, add a toddler, and it's even further forward.
- The shade for the childs head doesn't fit with your design overall, looks like a very "old school" cover (from back when they were called perambulators).
- Mum needs to put her make-up somewhere, so add some sort of hook/holder to the handlebars, otherwise you will have a really cool looking stroller, attached to a flustered parent, carrying several bags of nappies, food, clothes etc. (I am not a parent, though my brother in law is, and I've witnessed his pain)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/1a/Barnevogn2.jpg
and as your render shows, if it was a sunny day, you would have a toddler with sunburnt legs.
Let's not forget, I am a games artist, and I'm sure you have far more knowledge than me when it comes to design and manufacture for the real world, I'm just throwing my two pence down for you to heed, or ignore, I shall not be offended :)
From an artist POV, the render is great, clean modelling and nice lighting. I just think that you should avoid the hotspot of light on the "leg area" of the model.
regards.
(I'm such a noob, I read the first page and posted without reading the second page :( ....... I have now read it, my comments are no longer useful as you have made it, though my opinions still stand, and the colours are god awful, though that is purely subjective)

The Prime has some good points. Nonetheless thats one sweet looking stroller!
The Prime: Actually, I agree with most of what you said - but the semester is over, so onward to better things.
Thanks Avatar
Right now, I just want to work on my sketching ability, so I'll be making a sketch thread (with ONLY sketches, unlike this which seemed to be vastly 3d) that I'll be working on this summer.
I appreciate all your feedback and help. Sorry for the slow replies - the work of the semester was a bit time consuming.

Nice set of pictures.
I have to agree with you about the folding.
You have to imagine that the user is trying to fold it with one hand that's also holding a grocery bag and has a crying baby in the other arm, in the dark, between two cars that are parked too close together. ;)
