I am a complete novice on the material end aside from some basic blinns and i learn more by doing so the books ive checked out might as well be in spanish. But after i finish modeling a mustang i want to model my friends car who has a custom paint job as you can see from the pic. I am just wondering with all diff shapes and parts and angles how can i apply a material to look like this. I think ive heard once to try UV mapping but thats still pretty much over my head. Can anyone give me a detailed idea of what i could do?

I would say UV Mapping/Maps is probably the best way. I'm pretty sure that it would be the main method for creating the sharp paint.
Other than that, you could try to arrange your mesh perfectly to that paint pattern and then separate the two pieces of mesh and give them different materials.
Personally, I would look into UV Mapping training if I were you, that way you can do it simple and right. If UV Mapping is over your head, you should probably just wait or get a training DVD on it.

If you're using 3DS Max I can throw together a tutorial how I use it's UV tools, with step-by-step pictures and explanations :)
