View Full Version : Gift to the Gods - The Earth God - MightyReg

Already brainstorming while I am at job :P
Anymay I am thinking of an huge God that passe every 100 years to claim an offrance, not an human sacrifice but maybe a very valuable treasure. I'm thinking of putting this in a giant temple, with a giant door from where the God would come and go back.
For the Earth God I am thinking of something like the Colossus from the game ''Shadow of the Colossus''. That game is awesome artistically.
Going to start a sketch tonight when I get back from job.

Omg im sorry mate for the tittle.
in fact i dident want to make anything wrong in the tittle, so i just copied another title, in this case yours, and only changed my name :) and forgot everything about the tittle for my picture
yeah i know, what a dumbass :) i will try get it fixed - sorry mate, wasent ment to steal your tittle :)
Kind Regards
Andreas Olsen
Like your idea btw!
EDIT:
Ok, deleted the old thread with your tittle, and made me a new one:)

This is something like that I am thinking to do for the temple. Replace the God Statue by my Earth God, and behind him a giant open door with light coming from it. And of course a better camera then this frontal one.
MightyReg

Yeah now that I am thinking of it, a month is not much for a project like that... might end up just doing the Earth God finally (and I'm not even sure I would have time to do it :hmm:)

Hey Mighty, great idea,
Hope you can finish it man

Ok been thinking of my concept, and I might go for an animal-like God. I was thinking of something like a bull, with long horns unlike the picture, don't know.
MightyReg
03-03-2010, 02:42 AM
Ok, here is my first sketch. I finally took my bull idea but merged it with an humanoid God. Still thinking of thing I could do to make it better, I am not a concept artist at all. And I know the shoulder looks strange.
If you have ideas on how to make it more interesting don't hesitate to tell me.
wargrafix
03-03-2010, 04:36 AM
Ok, so far its an interesting design. I like the Minitor kind of feel.
My advice, work a time of day that if you were in that temple the moment he walked in through the doors, you would in complete awe.

Thanks wargrafix for the comment, I will try to see if I could maybe do things that would make him more God-like and less minotaur like since I don't want him to look like a monster.
As for the temple, I don't think I will have time to work on that part, maybe if I have the time at the end, it will depends.
Oh and I would add also that this guy is supposed to be gigantic (a human would be approxiately as tall as his hoofs).
wargrafix
03-03-2010, 01:21 PM
The armor quality will differentiate a monster from a god. Gods get the shiny stuff.
There is always time for pancakes! A trick I have learned is rendering what you want to be seen. You can use the trick of showing parts illuminated by light and hide the majority of the temple.

Big God-like shiny armor - noted! Thanks for the advice! I'll do researches tonight on armors.
I was also thinking of adding glowing glyphs and symbols on the armor (as you can maybe see on the left arm wrist armor).
god of what? i think the particular type of god, maybe of war, of knowledge, of beauty, etc, will help you determine how it will look. i like that concept so far, though it does seem a bit 'distant' more like a drone than a deity
Willzone
03-03-2010, 06:22 PM
nice sketch maybe it could be the god of destruction :) with that big hammer :P.
MightyReg
03-03-2010, 08:47 PM
sarN, Willzone : As it is said in the title, he is supposed to be an Earth God (you know like the element, Fire Water Wind and Earth).
He can control everything that comes from the ground.
If you give him the gift he ask each 100 years, he will reward you by influencing the quality of the agriculture, plants, etc.
Make him angry, and he shall punish you with his giant hammer, provoking earthquakes and even make a volcano pop out from the ground.
I want him to look neither bad, neither good. A passive God.
That's in part why I gave him the characteristics of a bull, because they can be passive but also extremely aggressive if you anger them.
Thanks for commenting my sketch, appreciate a lot. Tonight I will start the body's base mesh. Stay tuned.
oh i see. for an earth god i would think something more natural, i guess a golem is slightly cliche, but armor made of rocks / dirt with grass growing out of it, flowers, and such, would definitely be cool. i think if you had kind of a blank, but intimidating figure, covered in rocks and flowers, it would show the dynamic that you're trying to achieve. but who knows!
MightyReg
04-03-2010, 01:16 AM
sarN That's exactly what I was thinking of. I think my reference pictures are very close to that and it's in that direction I want to go. Grass instead of the fur could be cool, and armor made of stone is definitively a good idea. Thanks a lot for your advice.
So here is the basemesh I started, most thing like the armor-horns-hammer will be added on top of that later.
Stoneking

Hey Mighty,
Going in a very nice way man,
One thing i think would be cool is make the armor really big,
I mean, for example i love the shoulder armor idea,
I only think it would look cool huge!
Keep Rocking
Fernando
MightyReg
04-03-2010, 03:03 AM
Hey, thanks Fernando!
A huge giant armor would indeed look better than this one and give him more the mighty looks he deserves. I will do that for sure, and in stone like sarN proposed.
Really thanks everyone for the support, that's why I prefer 3DTotal then any other CG forums, everyone is willing to help each other and it's awesome.
Anyway here's what I had time to do tonight with my basemesh.

Good shape so far, a really big hump at the back making him haunch over lol looking forward to updates :)
Cordero
04-03-2010, 08:53 AM
Hey o'mighty!
Nice references you have there!
For the first zbrush screen, i did a little transforming in photoshop.
Your creature from the side view is pretty unbalanced i think. He would fall on his face right after stepping out of heaven or where ever it comes from:D
bringing the head/torso/ribcage back a bit, so its center will be just above the legs will make the creature stand more stable, and balanced.
Bringing them back will also make the rib cage pointing in the good/right direction!
And also gives the "hump" already mentioned by Munky
I hope you didn't mind me transforming it. This way, it explains better what i mean.
And its also a good idea to make this happen in the early stage of sculpting. Later on, it will give you a headache.
MightyReg
04-03-2010, 02:05 PM
Hey o'mighty!
I like being called like that :D
I don't mind at all that that you transformed it on photoshop. In fact i am really happy you took the time to do it. I will try to give him a better balance as you suggested, thanks.
ChunkyMunky: A big buffalo hump will pop out on his back tonight ;)
Tarik2d
04-03-2010, 02:11 PM
Just my bit, but I prefer the one with the larger chest
MightyReg
04-03-2010, 05:24 PM
Mmmm didn't realized in Cordero's photoshop transform that his chest was less big. Anyway now that I think of it, if I give him a hump, it would maybe bring back his balance?
I also planify to make his legs larger and stronge, right now I think they look rather weak.
Cordero
04-03-2010, 07:51 PM
Yeah, pimpin' his legs is a good idea. And yes, it is less bigger, but the idea is the same: keeping the balance between the back, and the front area. A hump could do that yes.
Show us some progress ASAP!:D
MightyReg

Show us some progress ASAP!:D
Here comes some progress ;) Didn't had a lot of time tonight to sculpt, I work full time in a 3D compagny the week, leaving me about 1-2 hours per day, so the most of my work will be done on week-ends.
Worked on the balance of my character, and I gave him a hump on his back (easier to see in front view, it's quite difficult to give a hump to a bipedal character).
As usual all comments are welcome.
MightyReg
06-03-2010, 10:15 PM
Gave him the muscle he needs to lift that big hammer he will have.
Still have to work the hands and the feet.
Well if you see something that seems wrong don't stay silent and tell me!
MightyReg
08-03-2010, 07:38 PM
Mmmmmm now I am asking myself, should I add a tail to this God or let him with no tail?
I ain't sure at all, adding a tail would make him more beast like, but at the same time it would also make him look like too much like a minotaur (which I don't want).
What do you think?
P.S. I am currently doing some base meshes for equipment, I'll post that later tonight.
Tarik2d
08-03-2010, 08:18 PM
doesnt look the type to have a tail
Stoneking
09-03-2010, 12:00 AM
Hey Mighty,
Going vey nice man,
Don't know about the tail honestly, try it and see what it looks like,
it's the best way to know if it will work or not,
There's two things think would look better tough,
1-The back muscle "Latissimus Dorsi" would look great with the shape shown in the pic i'm posting, make it so it can be seen fron the front view also,
Its to straigh right now :)
2-And the abdominal muscles could be much wider, i think it would be cool also:)
Keep rocking mate!
Cheers
MightyReg
09-03-2010, 02:49 PM
Tarik2d: Ok I think I will let him with no tail. Thanks for your opinion.
Stoneking: Thanks man! I will work on what you pointed immediately when I return to sculpting. I agree with what said on the back muscle, it would be really more interesting with that shape, and for the abs my brother also pointed the same thing before so I will widen them.
It's great that you took the time to show me with a picture, I really appreciate!
So here are some base meshes I did for the subtools, I did the shoulder armor, the hammer (inspired from a certain game ;P) and the horns, which I may change since I want to retouch the head. Also made the wrist plate, on started the hoofs plate, altough it may change since I want to refine the feet.
I will eventually add a mask (when the head shape is finished) to this God which will give him most of his personnality.
Critics are welcome as always

Okay, since I had no work to do at job because I was waiting after my client for a review, I started the temple in which I wanted my God to appear.
It's pretty simple, a row of marble columns on each side. There is still a giant door to do at the end of the hallway, for the God to appear. Even tough I am not even sure I will have time to implement that background in my final image, it will depend on how it goes.
I will post another update of my Earth God later, worked on him yesterday and will work on him tonight.

Minotaur? Greek stuff, already in love with the final piece:D Great equipment. You might want to consider switching the shoulder armor to the other side, because right now, if he is right handed, all the weight would be on is right side. That could work too, but then you should increase the left sides muscle size, or you should bend the character.
Or move the shoulder so the weight of the hammer, and the shoulder armor will balance this out.
Sorry for always disturbing you with balance:D

good modeling. and i like the concept - minotaur in the temple. kind of reminds me of a old picture by michael socha http://www.3dtotal.com/getgalleryitem.php?cat=character&id=1079
looking forward to this one. good luck :) cheers

11-03-2010, 02:21 PM
Stoneking: Thanks!
Cordero: You are absolutely right, I never tought of this when I built my equipment, thanks for pointing that out! I will switch the shoulder armor side as soon as I start sculpting it.
And don't worry about disturbing me with balance, I don't find it disturbing at all, and I prefer that than having an unbalanced model :D
paulius-st: Hey thanks, I already saw that Micheal Socha picture before, but I never really tought of it while thinking of my concept.
So I worked on the main body, and I think I can call it finished. Did some corrections on abs and dorsal muscle as you pointed out before Stoneking, as well as giving him more a cow-like head. Also worked on the hoofs and hands.
The only thing I will do later on the body is adding some details to it when I will have finished all my equipment.
As always, tell me if something seems wrong to you, so I can correct it.

really good and huge improvement in there, i just got a few crits about the piece..

Throne: Thanks for the comments, I agree that the mask lines need to be straightened, as I said before the mask isn't finished. The noise in the shoulder plates seems too much right now, but I always lose a bit of fine details when exporting to Maya so that's why I make them more visible in Zbrush.
And wargrafix is right, I am going to add a texture to the skin, won't let it smooth like that. I also wanted to do fur in Maya but since I don't have a lot of time I am probably going to sculpt it directly on Zbrush.
So yeah since I am lacking time, this is probably going to be only a sculpt like in the normal scullpting challenge, altough it will be rendered in Maya

Stoneking: Hey thanks! Unfortunately I won't have the time to put him in his temple, I won't even have time to texture it, so it will be just a sculpt like the sculpting competition.
Will try to do a nice render, something a bit like my abominable snowman render that you commented on ZBC
chunkymunky: I hope I will meet the deadline too :hmm:
Update for today, worked on the mask, and hammer. Tommorow I finish this sculpt, pose it and maybe start rendering if there are no export problems. My UV are already all done (thanks to the UV Master plugin).
If you see something that seems really weird, or that would be interesting (but don't take too much time), don't hesitate to tell me before I finish!
washka
28-03-2010, 10:23 AM
Maybe add a belt, and work on a nice posing.
If you don't have the time for fur or texturing, you can directly use photoshop man to do it there, directly on a clean render, (maybe somes specular materials could help b4 rendering)
It's a mixed technique comp' so I think you can choose the: "I don't really care about unwarp and tex, I can paint/tex/colors directly over it". And details there. You can win a =lot= of time going 2D now.
If you've got too much poly and your software crash too much, just clean it, you'll loose what? An hour of optimization, then win 5 hours of crashes? Maybe.
When you put the fur (If you've got time), maybe you can keep some muscles visible (if you want to), or you'll trash your sculpting work. (abdo, biceps, center chest, inner parts)
Keep it up man, the finishing line, good luck.
MightyReg
28-03-2010, 02:42 PM
Hey washka, thanks for the tips!
In my first sketch I tought of giving him a belt, maybe if things goes well I will do one. And I will give him a pose for sure as I said before
2D would be nice, but unfortunately my drawing skills are not extraordinary, I will sculpt the fur directly on Zbrush.
For sure I will add specular when I render in Maya, I attached an image of the type of render I want, with the type of fur I also want (probably stronger than that). Maybe you will understand more what direction I am taking. It's a render from my abominable snowman of last month, that I did before this month.
OK back to work on my model!

So here's is what I had time to do today, still have some minor things to do like bending fingers, work on the muscle deformation, and add a little texture to the body. Don't know if I will have time for a belt.

Nice result man, I'm happy you could finish it in time.
Some little details maybe for next time: hand is not grasping enough the hammer, the back parts of the clogs is not working. Looking at your snowman, I think you can do better for the anatomical part work.
Maybe I would have added somes chains or ropes for mask and armored pieces, you know fixing, attach.
I like the way you did the horns, and the decorations of the hammer, the mask is a good idea, originality, concept could have been pushed a bit further.
Your render is clean, that's good in some way, in another way I miss a bit the texturing, but time and deadlines are not always easy to manage, I know that. :D
But you know I'm quite a bad *ss for criticism, for a 4 month sculpting experience your job is quite good.

Agree that the anatomy of my snowman was more worked and refined, but at the same time I had almost only the anatomy to concentrate on for my snowman, so it's normal.
For the cogs, it was intentional that the plating didn't cover the back part.
