Hi guys,
I'm in! i'll do my best to do a good work,
My Bg will be sort off this:
-In some Planet outside our Sollar sistem
-This Alien Race Called - (no name yet)
-Every 10 years they make a big Hunt and a sacrifice as a Gift to the Gods
-They must hunt and bring alive the biggest creature in their planet
-and sacrifice it to the Gods
-It will bring fortune for the next 10 years
-If they can't be successfull in the hunt they have to pay by sacrificing one
of their own....
-The strongest go for the hunt
-This is The Gift to the Gods....

Man that's an awesome background story for your scene, it would be cool to have some kind of hunter who stands on a gigantic beast he just killed, anyway don't know what you will to do with that.
I will follow your progress for sure!

Hey Mr. Mighty, thanks for the words man, glad you liked it :)
Here's my first sketches,
The hunters will ride this "HorseFlea tipe of creature", two riders each
creature, the front one rides it wile the back one have a weapon,
Sure it is just the scketch, so the back one will have or a place to stay
or something to hold on, so he can be free to atack, and the front one will have a place tgo sit,
The big beast will have sort of a "turtle shell" and i think it will be the proportion, or something like that in the first pic, i'll decide during the execution,
Hope you like it!!
Cheers

Nice, you will have a lot of work to do tough! You will have to sculpt the alien race, their mounts and the giant creature. Do you plan on texturing them as well?

Hey Mighty!
I know i'm been ambicious, but i'll try my best,
For example i'll sculpt a "Rider template" and do changes on it for the others
so i don't have to sculpt all four from zero, and yes i'm going to polypaint tem, but polypainting won't be the major issue, sculpting will take much longer,
I wish ME good luck LOL

Really nice idea mate!
I dig the 10 year repetition!
If the big guy is vegetarian, he might not be as scary, and not as hard to hunt down as carnivore. If you stick to the vegetarian idea, i think you should came up with a design element which makes the "Telephants" (lol:D) more scary. Maybe rich colors could do that by their selves..
If the strongest go on the hunt, you will have to do a badass hunter don't you?:D can't wait to see a human figure from you!
Nice progress, and keep up the inspiring work!
edit: i added a picture from avatar, which shows a vegetarian fella. Even if you know, that he is vegetarian, you wouldn't mess with it.. that is what i was trying to explain earlier:D

Glad you guys are liking it!
--Mighty, thanks man, really glad you like it, yeah i'm going for the details all over it!
--Prosn, thanks a lot, very much appreciated!
--Chunky! Thanks man, i really liked the "Telephant or maybe Eleurtles" !!!!
you made me smille, glad you like it man,
--Dr. Cordero!, thanks man, appreciated the imput, i still thinking of how it will be in the end, one of the options is that this creature is not a "bad guy",
but it is the greatest chalenge of all due to it's size, mass and power, and
thinking of it as a harmless creature gives it that feel of unfair for the
sacrifice, cause always a sacrifice is unfair and cruel in my opinion,
What you think?
--Hey Andrew, wellcome to the chalenge! i'm still thinking about the final image, i keep thinking of an image of the moment of the hunt, with the big
"Telephant" been hunted by the riders, with lot's of motion blur and dramatic poses, what you think?
--Hey Turver! Thanks for the support man, glad you liked it, right now
i'm feeling it will be possible to finish !
Thanks a lot everyone again

great design :), my only concern is the length of the chin bone seems alittle too long. I would imagine it being a problem as the beast is running through a forrest or somewhere where there is alot of clutter and it constantly hitting stuff. Just my 2 cents ;).
Other than that keep it up and can't wait to see this finished up :)

Hey Dr Mariano! thanks man, comming from you such kind words means a lot
really glad you like it!!!!
Hey Edragon - thanks for the imput man, i understand your imput,
but looking from another angle, i thought of it with more then one function,
1- exactly to open his way for it's huge "turtle shell" through the forest
2- to fight among them selves for the females
3- as a visualy atractive part also for the females, females are the most important !!!!!!!
4- it's a simble of his power
5-And as Turver said to keep other animals away
Imagine this huge beast coming as an EarthQuake trowing down trees and everything in front of it, wouldnt it be cool! i believe it would look great animated,
BUT, again i do understant your imput and appreciate it very much,
i like a lot to hear inteligent crits such as yours so whe can aways improve,

- And the weapon they throw ate the "telephant" with anestesic in it's "horns"tips so they put the beast to sleep and can then bring it for the sacrifice,

i like them but the spear looks too evolved, and the sword wod look beter with some gravings on it, the auxiliar spices of the spear are coming from the same piont and will break if used on "telephant" make them like a sneak squizing the spear and coming out at 180 deegres, but if you like it just the way it is, you can leave it like that
you coud also add some feathers or samting from the first hunt as a hunter on the rider, that woud show that he is wordy of the hunt

Impressive work on all of the models my friend!

I like the simplicity of the weapons, matching the whole "tribal" feeling. Nothing fancy, going for the function! I also like the muscle tones (if thats how you say it:D) on each character.
I hope you have something really nice for us on the final composition. I think that will be critical, considering the size differences between the hunters, and the prey. Good luck with that, and keep on rockin'!

You have a really nice scene with cool proportions and such but, the great But, is that if you want it to be killer then you'll have to add some feelings to the image. Add a moral factor to it.
Could be something like if they really think it's worth it to kill this magnificent being. Or the creature's desperation or something...
Give it a minute of thought...

started because of the challenge of it, it is the greatest chalenge,
It is great your imput, cause whe can think of this scene, like....
They Hunt it for many generations, but the newest generations are starting to question it, is this really necessary?
I love the idea of trying to add desperation to the "Telephant" and maybe
a "shame" look to some of the riders, what you think?

You don't have to say it is the new generation... It could be one of the main elements that the hunters have to face in every hunt in order to truly prove their devotion. But then they question the moral of it and thus we have a bit of a conflict and setting of scene...
A good way to do this could be as you said, making the viewer feel the desperation of the creature. Perhaps rolling, pleading eyes and a wavering look could help accomplish this. The hesitation shown in the hunters is also an element you could develop.
Always fun to help people develop their ideas :haha:

The king of Stones - You gave me the idea man! Thanks a ton! ;)
The seats look awesome on the chickensaurus. Somehow they remind me a bit of the way the oliphants are steered in LOTR...
Try thinking of the pose of the riders and how you can differentiate them and make them really look like they are in their element, of course not forgetting their stricken looks. Perhaps the hunter holding the spear could look ready to leap or something - one slightly trembling hand on the edge of the seat, the other firmly holding the spear ready for the throw, eyes looking towards the colossal creature, face suddenly realising the sheer greatness of the creature, of nature.
Regarding the background I think both sound fun, a desert could suit the chickens, but that might not suit the turtlephant (since he needs a lot of food to survive). A clearing in the jungle might be better actually. As you said, try it out and come up with more as you go :)
Cheers

MightyReg
22-03-2010, 05:16 PM
The composting looks good, the extreme up angle really gives the feel the beast is gigantic!
If you are keeping that background image, I would suggest flipping it horizontally, because curently the sun on the BG picture seems to be illuminating from the right, while your models are lighted from the left.
The environement does feel a bit empty, but I am sure it is not final so I won't make comments about it. Tough it would be nice to match the color of your grass to the grass of the BG picture.
About filling your environment, doing a jungle might be to much for the time left in this comp, but you could maybe just put some trees here and here, as well as some rocks, maybe give it an African Savannah feel?
I am eager to see the final image!

You can try this tutorial for some nice grass textures here: http://www.cgdigest.com/how-to-create-grass-in-3ds-max/
If you are not using vray, you can still use this method, with a simple material, with the disp. picture added to the displace channel.
I used this in a personal project, and it worked well for landscapes too. (it was an animation) It takes some time to render, but it doesn't screws up your viewport, since you only need one polygon to render this out.
If you are getting a horrible grass material, either too bumpy, or too plain, the things you want to change is: the uvw tiling, and the disp. map intensity. Because if the tiling is too small, your intensity could be set correctly, but it wont render out nicely. So play with that two things, and you will get the grass done in a 15 minutes or so.
There is also a method, where you model a "grass pack" with poly modeling, and texturing it up with one grass material. In that method, you should model 5 or so blade of the grass, uvw each blade correctly, and add a grass material to it. When you are done, you can duplicate this grass pack, with some variation all over the scene. It takes more polys to pull out, but it could work for a non-animation image.
I hope i'm not late with this info, good luck on the final scene!
Mr.fE
24-03-2010, 09:43 AM
impressive!
i guess a canyon like bg might be easier and quicker to do and you cam play with dust clouds and dirt raised by those animals to give even more depth...
but one thing above all if you are going with grass os sand: do it in photoshop! more realism and more control!!!

Woooooooooh, I missed that last render.... DARN!
The scale is immense, and you have a nice view angle of the creature :). You need more lush grass as well, think of how you could make it look like it bends around their feet. Or just how it dissappears ;).
I think you should change the creature's eye color, give it a more friendly, natural look to further the concept about the beauty of nature...
Textures on him look very neat, especially around the huge lower horn (it looks like stone :O AWESOME). But there is some odd blur going on around his left shoulder.
You could also think about furthering the landscape behind them, define it a bit more. Make the image pop!
Ps: It looks a bit fun that all the creatures lift their left legs in the same way ;)
Just a few things I thought about,
Cheers mate!

Saraf - Thanks, i don't agree it is boring, i think boring is to strong for it,

and i'm happy with that,
for sure it is the part of the scene that can improve a lot, but if you
look at it from a bit more wider perspective, like the time i had to do the work,

27-03-2010, 07:12 PM
So...
Well the pic with the motion blur has a nice sense of action, but you loose the actual scene with the hunters.
One thing that you might consider as well is where the blur is. Should it be like an area blur or do you have multiple focal points or still objects...?
I think the depth of field is actually nicer if you regard everything since you don't loose as much of the models.
Either way I thought a bit about camera angles and I made some lines on top of your dof image...
MightyReg
27-03-2010, 08:27 PM
Nice update!
You should definitely choose the picture with less depth of filed, the one with a lot of DOF make disappear your details, take our attention away from the action, and the strong falloff from the telephant paw make it look like it's a miniature figurine.
As others said, the hunters are a bit too green.
Another thing that seems strange is that there's no shadow under the front left foot of your telephant, is it lifted?
Anyway good job!
washka
27-03-2010, 08:34 PM
+1 about the shadow
I think that what hulahuga wanted to explain, it's that you're loosing a lot of interesting details from your 3D work with your actual camera spot, maybe another point of view or scale play would fit better.
And he's also pointing the fact that you could work a bit more onto the background to create some interest.
Or maybe I'm wrong. :D
Wheez
27-03-2010, 08:59 PM
Nice job. The little green men look like they are plastic army figures. They just dont feel as real as the creatures. Maybe its just a texture issue. Keep up the hard work.

Hey guys, thanks a lot for the comments and imputs! appreciated
War - Thanks for the comment and imput man, i'm listenning to you guys
to help me improve the work, i just don't have too much time left, but i
will also improve it after the comp ! Cheers
Doc Hula - Thanks man for spending your time with this, very much appreciated, i'll try the blur you advised to see what i can do :)
if i have time i'll try different angles for the camera as you and others
sugested ! cheers !
Mighty - I agree the image with lots of motion blur takes out the details,
but it feel to me it fits the challenge better, some how it brings the feel
of fear to the Telephant and brings the feel of "The Hunt" also!
and i think of this as the most important about it, and the good thing about
having all the modeling detailed and ready for close ups is that it is possible
to play and make any kind of scene with the models, like in a movie or story,
What im triyng to point is, like in a movie there's scenes where you can
see all the little details and there's scenes that you can't, fells to me this is the case, what do you think??
And the leg is touching the ground, it is jut the ground topology that makes
the shadows just small,
Thanks for the imputs! as said before i'll try to improve it as much as i can :)
Washka - Thanks man for the imputs, yeah you are right, this is one of the things i'm going to try to improve! cheers
