Lets get this ball'a Rollin! I'm so pumped! Looking forward to this unified challenge, and seeing what it brings. Here are my ideas thus far.

This first one is the one I'm thinking of actively developing as a final image. I think it's the strongest idea, and I'm having the most fun with it. "The Sentinel" She is a symbol of life, and protection. She carries the child with her, always close, a reminder of just how precious the gift of life is. : )

Here a spirit is lending life to someone who has become mortally injured and stumbled upon his domain.

A giant cliff-face towers over a girl who has discovered a rune in the sand in the shape of a nautilus. There are faces of men, probably leaders carved into the wall.

If you can't tell yet, I'll most likely be doing a digital painting and staying away from 3D and matte/sculpting or anything of that sort.

Nice sketch concepts, I think all are pretty cool and powerful, maybe you could incorporate all three idea's into one, you could especially have the mother with baby instead of the girl with the huge rock faces towering over her. Definatly going to be cool either way :)
