Hey ho!
OLD POST
My name is Oskar Kolmodin and in this thread I will show some of the drawings I've done/will do, ranging from more "traditional" to digital paintings. The sole intent of this thread is to become a way for me to develop and further my skills, with your help, so comments are extremely helpful.
Edit: Since I am constantly striving to improve myself the quality will hopefully improve as I go on... so do check out the latest pages ;)
So let's start out with a quick concept that I'll probably try to sculpt in Mudbox later on.
It is completely made in SketchupPro (even though the background was made in PS) and it is the first time for me using the app.

On a vacation last summer I sat down without anything special to do, after a while these two appeared out of the sheets of an A5 sketchbook...
Actually quite satisfied with both of them :)
The lips of the girl were a killer to get right in that perspective, but finally they came out as I wanted them.

Was inspired by a picture I saw during a presentation in class this morning (the pic was a satire of how the military in turkey sees the government actually). Either way I wanted to draw the officer's cap.
After I was done I also wanted to do a face, thus I formed my own idea.
Decidedly I came up with "The Officer"...

Was that supposed to be a pun? ;).
I usually just draw from my mind. Just checked some things like how eyes look in perspective and such, also looked a bit at the head shape of the man.
But I'll try to do some drawings with a bit more ref, thanks for the tip :).
Ps: the girl is supposed to look androgenic...

I think you've done very good job. I like especially the human's portraits -very interesting faces by theway - they're very well proportional and anatomy done. I think only they need just more shadowing to do them more plastic.

The first stage of my take on a quite famous scene, I think you know which.
Made in PS. Fleshing out the lightning with multiply on a sepia coloured background.
Help, tips and tricks are very much appreciated, =)

Nice one, clothing details are quite impressive, I like the flower, looks like a photo.
But I think you need some more details on the mid part of the face, around the eyes. And crown's shadow (not clean there).
Nice one! K.I.U.
love the soldiers drawing :)

Thanks guys :)!
Just to clarify one thing though: The catlike warrior is made of a combination of two photos and what I've drawn upon. So the clothing and crown are mostly original (including the flower). But as with all areas there are a lot of tweaks made on every aspect...
The rest is all painted ;).
Glad you like them :smug:

Nice progress Oskar. Great to see your enthusiasm with this.
One advice I can give you is to always keep a sketch pad with you, and draw everything you see. I did it when I was in college and in that time I was rocking some pretty cool stuff.
Good luck matey :)

Hey boyos :)
Thought I'd share an update after all your nice comments.
I've revised the catwarrior, adding more details, taking away some lines, blurring the ends of the hair as well as some facial changes.
Given him a bit fiercer look.
Here it is:
http://img709.imageshack.us/img709/1160/catwarriorv12.jpg
Ps: Both my jpgs and pngs come out a bit different in color (both the same) compared to the psd, does anyone know how to receive the same colors? It is not an immense difference but some of the greenish tones seem to disappear and turn more reddish...
probably you have worked on cmyk colors in PSD and when you save as jpg it turns to RGB, try to "save for Web & Devices" under the File menu, than you can set the resolution and a file size limit, nice work so far :)

nice details...making the eye complete black gives the feeling of empty inside, not sure if you are looking for that effect. color needs some tweak as J.B pointed out. i wouldnt want to see this guy in the street :) Lol

Yeah I got no problems with the sizes and such, just colors..
I'll usually don't do eyes that way when drawing by hand, I'll continue polishing as soon as I get back to my comp. I'm on a ski trip with my school right now so updates won't come until thursday...
Glad you like it :). It is quite fun to give him this fierce expression as he is still quite slender..

the face is kinda shoddy right now , i belive u have put in many hard brush strokes, go in wth a soft edged brush and merge the areas around the cheeks .
and the skin on the neck is really done well the pores and all really add to it dynamicism.
but theres a variation of style in the body neck and head , do some test painting before finalising it to make sure ur final render doesnt look 3 diff artworks.
about the eyes the positoning looks a lil off , and at the moment the pupils look like polished wood like the egeptian cat statues.
when u establish ur light source i believe that will go away .
u know like the kings use to hunt animals and then place thm as trophies on walls, his facial skin has just reached there only, needs to be taken much further.
good references for u might be tekken 3's king character. or just for nat geo pictures of lionesses and cats.
and yes give him cat ears that will really add to the image.
for ur color problem try using proof color under views tab or u can just work in rgb or after u finish up the image in cmyk copy it change its mode to rgb and then apply apropriate filters and adjustments to get desired colors.
http://www.digitalarttutorials.com/freepository/
rgb>cmyk conversion tute here . maybe it will help
cheers

Hey, I think that instead of painting in overlay over a photo, you'll benefit much more from practicing building a head and face from your mind.
the eyes throw it off for me because they dont fit into the design, that yellow is sudden and too saturated, and is without values.
also the photo is sharp and crispy while the painted parts are blurry and miss some edge work.
I'd advise you draw everything from mind instead,
cheers
hulahuga
25-04-2010, 06:49 AM
Vatsel First of all I'm not painting in overlay.
Secondly the base photos are to get my inspiration going and add a base to the painting... A lot of work with liquify, warp and erasing stuff early on. Also had to work a lot with saturation and colors as I added the cat detail (this to prevent to reddish and extreme tones).... Plus if you look at the drawings by hand they are never with a live ref or anything, and hardly even that...
Thirdly I usually draw from my mind otherwise, but this technique is a practise in itself in both Photoshop but also in how I use the refs...
And I do agree about the eyes... I'm thinking of skipping them totally and try give him brown human eyes with enormous irises.
Aby Arty Thanks for your enormous comment :).
In the update before the eyes I worked a lot with softer brushes to take away some of those hard strokes, I made the mistake early on to use them to much... So I'll keep working on that bit ;).
I actually made the ears but then decided to skip those... Might add a bit more hair to cover the ear areas.
The eyes are actually partly from an oilpainting which I thought looked pretty cool. But yeah as I said to Vatsel I'll probably skip them if I can't find a way to make them fit properly.
I'll try looking a bit at the Tekken guys, though I'm not sure if I want their massive look.. But I can surely find some good stuff there :). Been playing those games tons of times.
I'll try the colors conversion too, thanks for the tip :D.
Thanks for the inspiration guys :)

As both I and others thought the eyes were off I've decided to scrap them.
Now they are made anew from scratch, hopefully the look is okay. Some overall shapes, including the eyes, are changed as well as. What are your thoughts?

Loving the mood and the lighting, and the cloth on the chest looks superb, kinda like Christopher Walken meets Thundercats, especially around the mouth that's very reminicent of Ron Perlman's Beast from the 80's TV series Beauty & The Beast with Linda Hamilton as the beauty.

But i guess you are talking about this http://www.space-debris.com/sci_perlman_vincent.jpg
Actually looks a bit alike, though I have never even glanced at any of the resembling stuff...
But yeah I get your point about it, the mouth actually looks a bit like Walken's, as well as some other things with the others :) (now that I've searched).

Hey guys, I know I have been a bit short on updates the last two weeks but the school year is nearing its end and there are a lot of tests coming up (ones that decide the entire grade in the courses). Thus I haven't had much time over for the art.
Even though this isn't an update it might still be interesting to hear this as I've got a little anecdote to tell today (though a short one). So let me begin...
A week ago me and my family went to London over a weekend, seeing the city and going tourist for a couple of days. Went to the London eye and such. We also went to the London aquarium where we had just paid our tickets and entered the first main hall (the one with the stingrays) as the fire alarm went on. Come on how often does a fire alarm go off in a place full of frigging water (!).
After we had escaped the building, which btw showed no sign of burning but it was a real alarm with messages and all, we went to get a refund. Well the one in the shop didn't at first want to give us a refund since the tickets could be used for a month, we were only there for a weekend so that was a bit of waste right... When we had explained that she agreed but wanted out tickets first, which had been taken by the admittance guards, right... So we had to go there, try to get our tickets back and then back to the shop to receive the refund... Don't we cg guys always talk about a streamlined linear workflow???
Either way that was only a detour, what was of more of note was what we did later on. As my mother and I went to the British museum to see a "once in a lifetime collection of Renaissance drawings and their evolution", with the top artists of the era, a window catched our eyes. There we discovered a wondrous shop with enormous jars of pigments (ones like true lapiz lazuli), a gargantuan assortment of brushes in all sizes, colors and much, much more. The shop itself looked like an old apothecary with heaps of drawers and cabinets, all containing said materials.
As I looked on the bag on my way out I discovered that this was actually London's longest established artists' materials supplier, L.Cornells & Son. I seriously advice everyone who is in the vicinity of the museum to visit this place, a real gem.
You can find it right next to the British museum at 105 Great Russel Street, London. www.cornelissen.com
Cheers guys!

If I go there, I'll stop to this shop, thanks for info.
Some technical hints for you last work (Cat warrior), maybe it can help:
Push up a bit the contrast on the face zone only, add some more grain over your smooth brush work for the skin parts.
For the eyes integration: maybe more specular onto the eye (white point = > more brilliant) and add some reflexion if you want to. You can also scale up a bit the eyes and add a stronger shadow under the eyebrow and a thin dark outline.
Like the scar cutting the face. Chris said to me once that I have to add side lightning to pump up the volume.
Keep it up man, you've just start the work. ;) But first go schoolwork.
hulahuga
07-05-2010, 10:04 PM
Cool, thanks man! :D. Thought the scar was a good element where I tried to follow his lines and give him some more character, glad you like it.

Love london....hate the people and the prices of things though, but the Musuem, Madame Tusuads and the london eye and all the history and archictecture is beautiful!
Just too darn expensive lol.
A few year back myself and my 2 sisters went to see The Queen/Ben Elton's We Will Rock You Musical (fantastic show) and went to Harrods too and rememeber at Harrods there was a guy dressed as Hagrid as The Goblet of Fire was released that weekend, I had to do a double take as it really did look like Robbie Coltrane as Hagrid was a great day out, I wanna go to London again soon and I will definately visit that shop :)

Hehe, thanks for your comments guys =)!
Always fun with pics :P.
And yeah, some things are really pricy..
People actually seemed pretty nice when I was there, overall image though. But they do dress extremely odd, sorry to say Londoners ;). Some look real fancy but others look very odd compared to Swedes... Well well, their lives :P.
Musicals there are great =). Real showy with enormous acts! We saw a pretty cool theater as well, "The woman in black". Built around the memories of an old man and how they rehearsed a play based on said memories :).
Regarding shops and such... Saw some of Radeon's latest and greatest there pretty cheap actually... One thing that struck me though as we looked through a Hugo Boss store at Sloan square was that they had an enormous amount of staff... We were like three people browsing there, but they had about 5-7 people at the entry floor and 10 more at the bottom(!).
Cheerios!
Ps: Still bogged down by tests, the national math curriculum.. wish me luck! :)
chunkymunky
18-05-2010, 09:17 AM
Good luck with the test! Yeah you're right about some of the fashions, but I suppose London is mean't to be the place to be, since the swinging 60's, it's the capital etc. When I go again I wanna go on a tour bus and photograph like mad! I'm a very annoying companion on trips like that I can't walk 4 steps without photographing everything :)

Long time no updates guys!
Just installed Photoshop CS5 on my comp and decidedly I tried out the new set of brushes (love them or hate them, think J.B might like them...). They are revised in their shapes and attributes and there are some "real" brushes. The old revised ones seem to be geared toward an efficient system divided into their set attributes...
Anyway, here is my little doodle :)!

About the knight compostion - think about what is important to you ... At the moment the knight and the horse are important both...but none of them is showed right... My advice is to crop the picture little below knight's hands.... or to show the horse whole... if he is important too...

Good idea, will definitely need to revise the composition :)!
Okay update time...
Been attending the Iron-Curtain workshop in Bucharest last weekend, great experience. Drawings were made during the lessons as pretty fast sketches.

Interesting man, you should post sketch more often. :)
First face has a better homogeneity than second one (problems with eyes axis/perspective on second), but second face's got more contrast and volume.
You could play add some level/contrast on thoses on photoshop and play a bit.
Adding somes big black zones, and a few white outlines could help, and details too.
Keep it up!

Yeah these are straight out of the camera, only did a size change since a d90 tends to make them quite large ;). But it is a good advice, would help show them better. Will do next time for sure!
btw it was actually the first time I "shaded outside" of the subject (in the second drawing), I actually like how it brings out the focus :).
ps: now how would I make white outlines with graphite pencils ;)

You don't need to use a pencil for that, there is an easier way.
After the second world war, some new technology appeared on the society.
The name was: computer. Then they invented photoshop, internet and graphic tablet. CG era had arisen.
So in fact if you've got a computer and a graphic tablet or a mouse, it's quite easy. Here's a fast free private tuto just for you!
(0) You power on your computer and load your O.S.
(1) You open you jpg on photoshop or any painting software
(2) You take the painting brush and change color to white
..
(3) Then just outline
..
.....outline.....
..
..
.......and outline again.....
..
..
...................out.....line............
...
Note: You can repeat (3) in a loop but don't do it too much or you'll end with a blank white image. (traumatic personal experience)
And remember, there is another important thing: it works for shading too! OMG!!!
Hope it'll help you!

Thanks man! I'm moved. Today is a great day.
I'm not sure they'll plug my tuto for this, was rather too easy...
I'll try to do better next time. I've still got a lot to learn.
Appreciate the fact that in this world, there is still people with great sense of humor, hopefully.

Now that's self-appreciation XD.
I wasn't talking about me, there are people who don't understand humor (or my sense of humor), hopefully you're not of those, it means you're tolerant.
It also means you can understand humor, so it also means you've got a sense of humor.
So when I said " there is still people with great sense of humor", it's not just self appreciation. In fact I wasn't considering myself but you because of your answer. :D

This one is quite interesting, now that you've got the big effects and texture, you can try to go to more homogeneity or more movements. Define more and details.
I can see the warrior with sword and shield.
City in fire on the background? Is the guy climbing stairs toward the viewer?

Hey Washka, now that one was a while back ;P. I think he is supposed to hold out a sword against the background where a city is being destroyed in some way...
Either way I have done a bunch of sketches in Salamanca the past three weeks and I wanted to show some of them :) (more to come in the morrow)... In chronological order:

Hahaha, thanks man ;P Well I actually used a 3d sculpt as ref for this one (though not one of mine).
Due to request in my sketchbox: This is how it looks without the texture work and other refinement (such as a lot of work with highlighting and custom painted detail), but with the final version as a color layer on top...
