modeling cabinet handle

Does anyone has an idea how to start modeling this handle.

I'd use:

+ A spline,
+ A lathe modifier at 180 degrees, and
+ An Edit Poly modifier with soft selection to smoosh it into shape.

The splotches and dirt can be left to the material. :)
