The Lost Jungle: Female Amazon Warrior

Welcome to the Twenty-fourth Speed Sculpting Challenge. Whether you're new to sculpting, to the Threedy forums, or you're a seasoned veteran, come and join in on the Sculpting madness – there's plenty of fun and learning to be had by all!

http://i728.photobucket.com/albums/ww288/Freespace87/3DTotal/ssc_rules.jpg

1. The competition will run until the 30th of April 2010, 11:59 PM GMT+0 (For information about GMT click here (http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/)); the time between now and then will be allocated to creating and submitting the entries, followed by several days of judging and voting for the entries.

2. You will be supplying your own base mesh for the competition, from which you will start sculpting. You can create your base mesh in any application ( 3dsmax, Maya, XSI, Cinema4D, Zspheres in Zbrush, etc ) using any technique, with no limits. Do not use an already made base mesh, you must build it specifically for this challenge.

3. There is no longer a fixed time limit for your sculpting. Quality over quantity.

4. Do not add any meshes other than those sanctioned in this competition brief.

5. You will have to supply a wireframe screenshot of your base mesh/meshes along with your final entry image ( see rule 7 ).

6. No rendering, texturing, lighting or rigging – let's keep it all about the high-res sculpt! What we are looking for is the quality of the sculpt you can produce. If your entry is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognizable and on topic.

7. For your final entry, post a screen-grab from your software with your finished work in it, along with your screenshot of the base meshes used ( see rule 5 ). It's fine to present this stuff nicely, with nice labeling etc., but do not add excessive post-production to the images themselves that may alter their aesthetics. These images must be uploaded to our servers by using the "Manage Attachments" button on the forum reply page. Do not link to external image files. Larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials) will be removed and the poster disqualified.

8. You can create multiple sculpts, but you can have only one final entry for each competition.

9. Do not create your own WIP thread. Simply post all WIP screen-grabs in here and your FINAL entry in the Final Submissions thread here (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?p=771935).

These rules apply to everybody taking part – there will be NO exceptions!

Subject: Female Amazon Warrior

This challenge is about creating a female character with two traits: mesmerizing beauty and ferocious power. The amazon warriors of legend are cults of female warriors, that show off as much of their perfectly toned bodies as possible. They are the wild agile fighters of the jungle, stalking their foes before striking with their bows or spears.

So let's see the most gorgeous and deadly female amazon warriors you can sculpt. If you do nudity in your pieces, keep it PG-13 and artistically proper. I'm ( and I bet all male members of the forum ) looking forward to the entries. There is no time limit for this challenge, so you can spend all the time you need on all the little details and accessories of your amazon. The most important aspect we're looking for is your sculpt's personality.

For some background info on the amazons, go here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazons

As always, you can choose a realistic style for your sculpt, but you can also try your hand at a stylized version as well. You can do a head or a bust, but a full body sculpt is extremely recommended.

Let's try this out:
Download the free application CamStudio here (http://camstudio.org/), and record your progress on the sculpt ( set it to save about one frame per second ). You will not have to display it to the public, only to the judges in case you qualify in the top three. Of course, you don't need to complete the whole sculpt in one sitting, so just resume recording whenever you return to the sculpt ( multiple video recording files are acceptable ). Feedback on this idea is welcome!

Please read all the rules and brief carefully. If there are any further questions, ask and they shall be answered.

Nice subject.
Is it still a need to maintain the camstudio recording while there's no more time limit?

can't we limit it at severals screenshots all along the wip?

I don't think we have to record our sculpt, it think Freespace just copy-pasted the rules from the previous challenge and forgot to remove that part.

Anyway it's cool there is no time limit on the sculpt, I expect to see a lot of quality sculpts out there.

As for me, it will be the occasion to practice myself at sculpting female anatomy (which I have never done) and to test that graphic tablet I just bought :smug:

Actually I thought people could still record in order to post their progress. It's not to check up on you if you respect the ( currently defunct ) timelimit, it's to see your progress either for verification ( in case something suspicious may happen ) or in case you want to release it as a tutorial. :)

I'm really looking forward to some amazons. Let loose your creativity.

Not forced at all. It's a suggestion, and if you do record it you don't have to post it anywhere. It's just something good to have in case it would be requested.

This is about fun, learning and cool sculpting. :) We're not gonna go "Big Brother" on you.

I'd say it's really up to you. I like sometime to start with Zspheres in Zbrush in challenges like these where there is a time limit, since it is really fast. The inconvenient with Zspheres tough is that you can't really control the edgeflow, and you can have too much polys in the hands/toes and not enough on the body/face.

But since this month there is no time limit, I tought I would take 30 min more and do one in Maya with a good edgeflow, putting my edges where I need them.

Turvs
02-04-2010, 02:11 PM
Thanks i have just attemted one in 3ds max n doesnt look right. So im doing it in zbrush then putting it is 3ds max to sort out the mesh.

My personal preference, base mesh in 3ds, will allow for a better Edge flow and you wont be "forced" to retopo later on.

Turvs
02-04-2010, 07:48 PM
ok just failed a second time at making a base mesh, i have know idea why i cant make one. I ok on zbrush (not with zspheres i always mess that up) and good on 3ds max just cant create one. Going to try zspheres see it that works. Also with zbrush anyway to get a ref pic on there so i can get the size right?

two quick questions
1: are we allowed to modernize our design. example http://kassarts.deviantart.com/art/Modern-Amazon-146938226
or do we need to stick to the traditional amazon design such as http://xiaji777.deviantart.com/art/Amazon-61076971
or maybe a combination of both.

2: is it a requirement to have our progress recorded via Camtasia or Fraps?

Turvs

Hey guys sorry for not posting for a while, I will be entering this comp for sure and such, I sadly could not finish the coming of ice one last time because of work on my portfolio for a college place (which i got woot!) but yeah count me in for sure!

Oh and Turvs if your having trouble with your base mesh you should check out soem of Ben's tutorials over here: http://poopinmymouth.com/tutorial/tutorial.htm

I would really not focus too much on getting a perfect base mesh by the way man, and if your really having trouble you should also follow the Joan of arc tutorial that is on the 3dtotal homepage(http://3dtotal.com/pages/tutorials/max/joanofarc/joanmenu.php) it has helped me out a great deal when I was learning and once you get something that looks like a female put loops around areas that will have to bu sub-divided and it will work just fine in Zbrush/Mudbox and so on. Focus on enjoyment and you will be fine and grab some pics of women on the net to use as a guide for anatomy which I am sure the net is usefull for lol! But yeah hope this helps ya out man, best of luck!

To further clarify on some questions:

1. The modern approach to the theme would take this in too many directions. Let's keep it in the traditional mood like TNTxGRAVE's second image: http://xiaji777.deviantart.com/art/Amazon-61076971

2. It is not a requirement to record your progress, it is a suggestion. If you do record, you do not have to post in anywhere, but it is good for you to have it in case it is requested that you show it ( in private, for any possible reason that cannot be foreseen at this time ).

3. Make the amazons as hot as you like. Oh, you mean this question wasn't asked? ;P

Thank you FreeSpace for clarifying things for me. Now I have a direction in which to go. I wanted to do a 90% traditional and 10% modern character. The 10% would be taking something as simple as a traditional weapon and bringing it up-to-date. so she isnt running around with a stick.

Ok well here is a first update of the sculpting of the body. If you see some things that seems strange or badly proportioned, please tell me!

I know right now she don't look very amazon-like, I am focusing on getting the standard woman anatomy right, (so I can have a base female mesh for my futures personnal projects), after that I'll give her the amazon anatomy she should have.

Another update. I retopologized the head + chest area, worked on anatomy and proportions a bit more. I am not too happy with her face at the moment (just doesn't work for me for some reason) and I was thinking of trying to capture the likeness of Dagmara Dominczyk, as she appeared in Count of Monte Cristo (2002) (which I watched yesterday just as I finished sculpting, heh. Freespace the mod already said something about that:

1. The modern approach to the theme would take this in too many directions. Let's keep it in the traditional mood like TNTxGRAVE's second image: http://xiaji777.deviantart.com/art/Amazon-61076971

Stoneking: Hope you will have time to join when you come back!

Yamanato: Hey welcome to the challenge!

Spirit: On the first pic you uploaded, your amazon looks very tall, keep in mind that the average human is 7,5 heads tall. She seemed a bit too muscular too but it looks like it's fixed on your bikini pic. Her armor looks good!

morte: Excellent start, her proportions seems spot on.

Well this weekend I had time to try the retopo tool for the first time. I know my mesh isn't perfect, but I think it's still many times better than my previous one. Now I will refine her head and the hands/feet.

MightyReg: thanks man! Nice update, although it would be difficult to sculpt the ear over the topology there imo:/ I'd try to resolve the pole there as best as I can and if there's some left, hide it in the ear hole.

Throne: thanks! Yours is coming along nicely too! :b:

Another update. I am pretty much finished with the t-pose anatomy and proportions, I think. I made her brand new eyes with smaller irises and better size/orientation, and - some teeth too.

I ve sculpted another version of her head (based off Dagmara Dominczyk's likeness..sort of), but not sure if it works with the body or not atm. It does look better up close than the first head does, but doesn't seem to fit the body as well as the other one did. I ll see if it works better when she's posed and with all the props/hair, etc..it's on a layer, so it will be easy to switch.

MightyReg : Zbrush topo tools is just balls, try topogun or polyboost inside max.
morte : Stylishly weird, ill be keeping an eye!
Fess1001 : Good job with the face, now iam jealous with the teeth, maybe ill add mine even that iam not going with open mouth :P
CompanionCube excellent topo and evenly distributed

Updates : so i went over the whole anatomy fixing it over and over, hope i got it right this one.

Spirit : thanks for the notice, but i couldn't stop myself wondering, is this armor being done in 3ds/maya ? because that wouldn't count as sculpting, also your WIP should be only screen grabs off your software viewport, make sure to review the rule list again.

Throne Yes, it's done in Maya, but it's only a base mesh of armor, because all the wrinkles, folds, scratches and textures of metall and leather would be done in Zbrush.
Sorry for renders. Seen the screen crabs rule only for final image, now noticed for WIPs also =(
Next time it'll be screen grab, I swear :smug:

Throne: Thanks man. Yeah, having teeth makes the character a bit more involved imo, and, besides, it also allows you to have different facial expressions! :) (not sure if I would do one though). I like your progress, the pose looks very natural. I d check the back of her head though as it seems to come out a bit too much at the back..

Yes I realize how removing the time limit for this competition would encourage people to do a lot of the work in their primary 3d application ( 3dsmax, Maya, etc... ), but do remember this is about the sculpting.

Good luck to everyone!

Fess1001: Nice teeth :D
Throne: Great update, anatomy is nice overall, I think her chin looks a little strange in the side view, it's a bit too much behind her lips if you understand what I mean
CompanionCube: Great topology, can't wait to see more!

My udpate of the night, worked on the head. First time I ever do a human head, tell me if I got some things wrong. Still have to refine some things like the eyelids, not pleased with the current ones.

Hi
I am not sure abut the rule:" 4. Do not add any meshes other than those sanctioned in this competition brief."
As I understand we can't import basic meshes for accessories.
So my question is: Can we create them inside ZBrush using primitives, zspheres, topology tool or mesh extraction?
Good luck everyone.

Good point, ak666. That rule is usually enforced by a specific statement in each challenge's brief ( for example, in earlier challenges you could only use up to 3 accessories, etc ). This challenge didn't prohibit anything, so as long as you keep it on the topic of amazons, you can build any base meshes you need to in your application of choice.

IF you get chosen for a place, you should qualify without problems. Recordings are necessary if we find something suspicious. They're a plan B. I'm not expecting anything suspicious from long time members. :)

Camtasia is really good, but if you want to speed up your final video, just load it up into something like Premiere or After Effects ( if you have these ) and speed it up from there. If this doesn't work for you, just hold on to your video, you don't need to post in anywhere if you don't want to.

you can speed up your movies with camtasia too...and besides that as freespace stated someday you don't have to capture your whole working space. for example you could just record a little area around your mouse cursor(something about 200x200 pixel)...this should definitively keep the size down.

edit:
did the retopo in the last days...the face is nowhere near final, just blocked it in for retopology.

MrFunk
17-04-2010, 04:15 PM
good start Liam282 but i think you could get rid of some edge loops. some areas have more density than the rest of the face and that won't feel that good while sculpting. you have plenty of loops around the mouth for example and they don't really help you to describe the shape/volume...same goes for the eyes. it also looks like you have too much geometry in the nostrils.
well...all this won't break your neck but it really can enhance your sculpting and make it feel more natural, when your mesh consists of even sized quads.

yhis is really getting exciting.
thanx everybody for your comments.
Respected Admin I have the same question as MrFunk,is it allowed to add one or two more models ro my sculpt.
Some observations:
MrFunk:How did u get such nice shadow on ur model can u share the trick.
Ur model looks very nice but may be the hip and lower torso area is too broad making the head looking much smaller than the body...just my personal thought.
Bryzol :nice sculpting man but as the storyline says the Amazon warriors were greek but u r giving ur model afro pigmy features , so is it deliberate?or u have some other game plan to reveal ?

sagiartsAmazon warriors were greek but u r giving ur model afro pigmy features , so is it deliberate?or u have some other game plan to reveal ?
Over time the legend of the Amazon warriors has become distorted and associated with the amazon jungle, Bryzol is just sticking to the brief of the The Lost Jungle theme this month The amazon warriors of legend are cults of female warriors, that show off as much of their perfectly toned bodies as possible. They are the wild agile fighters of the jungle, stalking their foes before striking with their bows or spears.

Freespace-3DT
23-04-2010, 06:33 AM
CompanionCube: That's right. The legend is usually far from the truth, but it is mostly accepted that Amazons call the great jungle their home. Artistically speaking, since this is an art forum, it's also a more interesting subject to tackle. :)

sagiarts & MrFunk: Regarding animals, it shouldn't detract from the fact that the Amazon is your main character, the centerpiece of the sculpt. Usually I would say to use your limited time to improve your main subject, but this is not the case here. Go ahead, if having a pet/prey next to your amazon would help her personality stand out, give it your best shot. :)

My fav so far is Bryzol's piece. Love what you did on the face. There's something wild and primeval about those eyes that makes her both sexy and fierce.
Keep up guys :)

sagiarts well...there is no magic with this shadows i just turn them on in the light settings :) but keep in mind that i'm using mudbox and not zbrush ;)
you definitively got a point there with the head/torso size thing. i do think the same from time to time. i'll probably play with the proportions when i start posing her and see if i can solve this problem.

bryzol well...i have no problems with too many subtools cause i'm using mudbox
I can see you have no problem with that :) Keep it up!

CompanionCube Thanks, I'm glad you like it. And I must agree with you and FreeSpace about the Amazon warriors ledend and the theme interpretation. Thats why sagiarts my sculpt is nothing else than my variation about Amazon Warrior. You can call it an impresion, a fantasy, whatever you like. I hope this answer satisfy you a little bit :)
Thanks DD! This is my goal, to make her sexy... and yes... fierce.

hi there :)

MrFunk very neatly - well done!

sagiarts my favorite so far. looks realy cool.

bryzol Another very strong job. But I think something wrong with her side view of the face. It's little flat.

When I read about pets, I changed my concept. Here it is. Her arms - wild cheetahs. Base mesh from my previous post here. hope you like it :)

Amazons - they bring us together...

Cheers guys, you got some cool stuff going :).

Bryzol: You need to think of the facial proportions the forehead is way to tall right now...

MrFunk: Cool stuff, the body and clothing looks real cool. I like the fact that the body looks possible. Animals will be cool as well. The head looks a bit to small right now though... A bit to short chin as well...

If I was you I would concentrate more on doing some hair than props, it would make her much more complete. This and finish her lance and I think it would be a very strong entry (and you can still do more props if you have time after that)

And great job everyone so far, hope to see a whole tribe of these amazon at the end of the month ! :D

Pretty late posting. My internet has been out, but I started on this a few days ago. I'm going with a more literal greek amazon, removed right breast and all. Done blocking out the form, some detail done to the face, hands and feet. Next is to quickly plan some clothes and finish up!

Even if I don't finish this is a great learning experience, I've never made a buff chick before...

Hey all, sorry for the lack of posting progress. This is my first time doing a full body high res model, my first female model & my first anatomy model. Not to mention that I'm also kinda new to sculpting. :)

I use 3DS Max 8 for the base mesh, and Zbrush 3.5 r3 for the sculpt. As you can tell, I made changes to the cloth rings on the abs between the two shots in Max. I know it could use more detail and fixes, but I'm happy with how it is for a first. ;)

Nearing the finish line. Next up is a bit more detailing to the hands and a few areas on the body, rough up the shield, and try to pose this. Plus a base and messing with matcaps. I may be mistaken but I think the deadline is 5 am for me (california pacific time).

As for voting, it's been like this for a few challenges. Most people consider this the most fair option. :)
