I just wanted to say the last challenge was great to do. I liked it how you could mix everything you know to complete the image. The challenges have keep me focused and Ive learnt a lot from having this focus.

Sculpting challenge, the last one didn't really feel like one at all, for me it was more like high-res modeling, what i would really like is a old school challenge,one with pre-set basemesh for everyone.

I think we are going to have a month of rest people, the costs, organization, prizes etc etc are getting on top of us a little bit so we just need a short break. Will be back in full force on 1st June.

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask, but was there any try to start a monthly challenge of lightning?
I don't know if there would be any interest in that, but i would sure join every month:D (and i'm also sure that Tarik would love to show off his lightning skills too:D)

It could relate to the theme too.. last month could have been a deep forest scene, and the Gift to the Gods could have been an altar of some sort..
Modeling a basic scene, and lightning it with any kind of engine.

to compensate for rewards , just call the best artists in each category for us to against,
i mean the artists u interview and those who are featured in exotique and other mags.

i wont mind going up against richard tilbury or even papa georgio for that matter , just put your best foot forward , we arent here for prizes every mnth , we are here to learn and grow together , we are here for threedy.

Oh if you have a month long beach vacation planned then i am happy to oblige , but ull have to make june a double bonanza then.:D :evil:

A lighting challenge is a good idea, but it might have to be a texturing and lighting challenge and the modelled scene is provided.

I'm not sure that providing the scene for everyone could work, because it would not be as "colorful" as if everyone would do their own scene.

I mean this could be something like using the same character model for the Game Art challenge, and see who can make a better job on the texturing, sculpting and on the other stuff.

Well, of course a complex scene's modeling texturing, and lightning takes more time, but its worth a try:D

But of course, using the same scene would really show off who did the best job with the lightning, and the texturing, which is actually the goal:D but you know, it could be a bit boring.
Or not?:D

I'm bored of scifi and dwarfs - I propose a bosozuka/bosozuku (and alternative spellings) theme

Cars are haaaaarrrddd and alot of people don't like doing them. I think we'd lose alot of potential participants.

However, all of the game art challenges thus far have been characters. Something else might be a nice change of pace. How about a small environment? Like a single room or a pedastal-style mini-scene.

No reason why it couldnt stretch out to a modern(ish) day crime gang theme.

I just think the whole future war / magic sword thing has been done to death, dug up and done again over the last couple of decades.

This isn't a criticism of threedy btw. I've lapsed into bitching about the CG and Game industry as a whole.

I love the idea of a kid friendly theme. Or at least a "real" theme....not completely imaginary like fantasy art.

And lets do period art.

So...for example.... the Regency period.... and make the theme something like "Home"...."Play"...."Study"...."Chores"...."Spring is in the Air"....you get the idea. Something a little more real and down to earth.

I like these suggestions. A greek or prehistoric theme would sure make change from the usual medieval and futuristic theme.
Probably won't have time to participate for the June challenge, but I am still eager to see what theme you have in store for us.

If it would be for sculpting we could have a general bust as a category... Think of all the roman marble busts of their emperors and generals...
The category could be open as in antique bust (only of humans though). Then the artists get to chose why and what they should depict....


Otherwise the antiquity sounds awesome to me :D

It's all happening but we have had some delays and illness in the office Im afraid, so it could be a few days late. One of the delays is in trying to find new sponsors too, so hopefully the prizes will be better.

Very sorry for the delay, just seem to have to much work on at the moment to organize things.

I estimate, we could have the new challenge launched by the middle of the month.

Really sorry people for the continued delays in trying to launch a new challenge, the problem is this.

All of the paid in house staff are flat out on projects that pay the bills such as books and mags and site updates, as it is getting abit of a struggle to stay afloat lately and the summers are always slow on sales.

The challenges are quite time consuming, especially with the organization of sponsors, the mods do a great job but they can only do so much and they are volunteers.

So what I'm saying is we currently haven't got the resources, but we hope to have the time again really soon, such as next month, I will keep you posted.

It's like a compo festival season started, without our glasto (Dominance) this year it's been good to see the regular challenges appearing.

I know that the organisation about a contest takes time and ressources.
But the idea of a contest (a small one or a big one with other CG forum) WITHOUT ANY PRIZE could be really interesting. But with a main objective that'll help participants AND organisators.
