Hello !
I just open a thread. Pics are coming soon...
After some drawing, I've decided where I'm going.
The scene takes place in a big waterfalls valley with Aztec temples and structures.
In the background : the huge temple/mountain with the aim waterfall.
See you soon !

Hi !
Well, here is my WIP.
I have to finish the matte soon this month but I have already prepared for my future free time the waterfalls valley with the same mountain/temple in the background. It's an inspiring topic !
In this one, a lot of things have to be retouched, adjusted, or simply created.
Comments are welcomed !
Have fun !

Damn... I tought I was incognito !
Thanks buddy !
nice work Olivier !
But I think you can do more. You need a light, a mood in your matte. Maybe with this element, the integration of the stones at the foreground will be better.

Salut ! :)
Totaly Right.
I've replaced the sky by a grey one, soft. It brings more light and less yellow. It helps to read better the picture.
I'm working too on perspectives and sizes of the structures.
A lot of exciting work !
And you ? :)
What do you plan to create ?
See you !

This is looking very very good. Atmosphere is already great. I think though that this would look even better without the ruins in the midle with the three and roots on top of it. Maybe continue the path from foreground with water and rocks. That would lead the eye perfectly. This is already a strong peace hope you finish it. Good luck. :)

Thanks The Saraf for the advice.
It's a good point. I tried it a few moments ago and It creates a long and weird distance between the little wall in the foreground and the middle plan (1st waterfall).
I prefer to keep it cause I plan to hang skull heads from the tree. Creepy and discrete details for this old and lost Maya kingdom, but I like it.
Here is an update with close-ups ! Of course I have my list of things to change but let me know what do you think guys.
I really appreciate your advices and comments.

This is looking really cool, you must be working pretty high res too because everything looks so sharp and crisp :) I'm loving where you are taking this at the moment. Do you plan on adding any noisy volumetric lighting at all?
Rievilo
09-04-2010, 01:43 PM
Thanks !
For the resolution of the pictures : yeah, it's right. I have a huge image bank in Hires.
And 60/70% are personal pics. This image size : 3000x2000 Pi / 300 dpi
The volumetric lighting : good point !
I tried something, but it was so bad that I let it go for the moment :)
But well, first, I prefer to finish the details.
And at the end this can be a serious option to consider.

The water on the right side looks a bit off, it seems to be hovering over the steps. You might want to define the structure at the waterfall a bit more as well, a bit to equal in light.
Good progress :)! Keep on going.

Hi man, haven't hear from you in a long time. Ok, some tips, you will need to check hue/saturation, you have some mistakes there. Also check for scale, those river rocks look to large compared to rest of scenery. Then you have some fuzzy trees and elements in your matte. Also, perspective, check it one more time :)

hello Rievilo,
you have composed it very well, however i think you will need to work a bit more on color correction. also, the middle portion[stones n water] looks more desaturated. try to fix it.
just a suggestion..

Glad to hear that. So where do you live now and where do you work?
I am still freelancing but thinking of moving somewhere also, not yet sure where :)

I'm in Montreal working for an advertising agency based in Quebec city doing regular freelances from home. It's really the beginning for me.
I arrived almost 4 months ago. The first two months, you have to deal with administration and to find an apartment, to move in it, to learn the city and make networks ... so it takes almost two months. after that it's you have more time for looking for job.
There are a lot of video games and vfx companies here. But it's still freelances jobs, or 6 months jobs inside the company.
One of my good friend from Paris just arrived. He called a known video game company with a very very good portfolio. And they gave him a test for a concept art project and it has been successful. So one of the key is being patient, professional at 300% and proactiv in the way to find a job and contact people.
But you have to know that in Quebec Province, "french" people ask to the (new) citizens to speak FRENCH and English. It's like a huge Asterix village in the middle of north America.
PS : Universal and two others companies will open offices here in Montreal this year.
but well if you just speak English fine well, it works too ! you can fine a lot of anglophones here too. Life is cool here. Nature in the middle of the town, and Springtime is coming right away !
Of course Toronto, Ontario or the west coast can offer good perspectives in this kind of visual industries.
It's a big decision to move. It takes time and money. But between us, this summer I'm marrying the first reason why I did it. :)

I really like the whole foreground area, very crisp and detailed. I also like the little chaos in the midground and the idea of the great water fall in the beackground, but you should propably decide for a strong focal point and try to establish kind of a visual path for the eye through the "chaos" by means of lights and darks. And the big tree in the middleground still looks a bit flat to me.
Cheers :)

Right ! Thanks guys !
I've been obstinate by this three... :)
I've loose my point in this matte.
well ! I try something tonight.
I like too the wild chaos and I tried to keep it but without the ruins.
I worked on two others ideas. It's just rough works without the structures. Let know what do you think.
And, I found this document in internet and I wanted to share it with you guys.
Thanks and see you soon !

May 4th : Last update
I've kept the ruins and the tree, adding on it some skulls + the river.
Still wild, with a lot of to thing. Not my best MP, but There's something that I like in it... well... it needs some other touches and it will depend of my schedules.

The first concept opened very nicely when you removed that big tree and parts of ruins in the middle. Now you can feel that water path leads you to the point of intrest. Just finish that awesome mountain/ruin in the background and you are all set. And Indiana Jones as well. :) Second concept is realy epic vista and deserves much more time then 15 days left in this contest. If you are fast worker get to it now and compare the results of the two mattes and post the better one. Good luck with both of them.

The Last one has a massive depth view. Its nice, but the first one has a more mystic feeling over it...

Thanks for Tjerkotten for your opinion.
I agree with you about the mystical side of the first matte.
It's what I like the most, but the truth is that I let this matte go. It happens sometimes. I was just turning around with it. Now it is waiting quietly in its file. Later I'll finish it for sure !
I had just two days to work on something new.
- There it is the pictures that I used.
- The evolution of the WIP.
- The last step (...for the moment...)
- Close-ups
I won't be able to work this week and next week on The lost Jungle, except during the last two days of this challenge. Let me know what you think guys. I always appreciate the fact that you can share easily constructive points of view !
Good luck !

Its not mystic, but it looks much better as a composition and an edit than the first one. Cool matte. If this was real i wanted to go there on vacation and go rafting ;)

I like how you composited all the different waterfall views. Hope you have the time to work on some of the matte egdes that still make some of the elements look pasted in. And somehow I don't like the cyan sky tint of the last wips so much, in the second step of your wip sheet it looks better to me.
Good luck for the final steps. :)

This looks stunning! I'm not sure about the colouring but it doesn't detract too much from the sense of scale for this matte which is breathtakingly beautiful :)
