Hi CG, yeah its been too long indeed. I have been involved with many different projects and i relocated to a bigger studio and developed my own art line which is selling pretty well. I just wanted to come back and produce some matte painting for a cool contest :) Doing something different again...

Wow. I love you work. And I love how you show your WIP. It's really awesome you're taking the time to make all those instructional images, and I must say I learned a lot from it. Myself, I'm not really into matte painting, but looking at your work really gives me incentive and inspiration, and also some guidance as well :)

And about your work - like I said, it looks really good. All the details you added fit very well inside the scene. One thing I wanted to note is that orange leaf on the right side. While giving the scene depth, it takes out the focus from the scene. I suggest you make it blend more with the rest of the wood.

Anyway, great job, Tjerk!

Its too blurred on the left side. I made a mistake there. I left a layer on top of another. I didn't noticed it untill you said it. Next update it will be deleted. Thank you very much..

Nice Style. watch at the scene and paint some sharper details left side.i think the orange leaf in front is out of scene. may you can recolor it or remove the leaf is the better way. Some parts are to blurry. I´m looking forward to the next steps.

Great Job.

Wow, this is exotic scene, using tropical or maybe Asian culture. So far so good dude.
To make it dramatic, mistic and misterious, try to add purple or red fog to the scene.
Hope this can help you. :)

Nice picture composition and good integration, I think the render can be improved further ... for now the colors are too saturated, I'm not a big fan of fuzzy too ... but it's a choice. For me, work a little more mysterious ... it's my feeling.

Hi Everybody,

here is another update. I tried to do something different here. I listened to the comments and i changed some elements so that the picture plays with the eyes a little more. Also i added some more mysterious parts to the picture.I also deleted the orange leaf and changed it with another plant to create the depth. I like it much better know. The eyes goes all around the picture. I will show a progress sheet soon. I hope you like this version better than the other.

Just for fun i will show the starting picture and the one i have now. Its always fun to see what happened in the meantime..

Hi, thanks for comment. More depths of field, i can try that. I used the plant in front to create a depths of field and the picture is a bit bright, but it differs on displays and personally i kinda like it. Ill listen to every comments to and ill take it in concideration. Thanks for your opinion!

Nice work. I think it looks really good so far. I don't really understand the glowing trees, but I think it would be a better effect if you had some heat distortion there and maybe some light smoke. Also, I don't much care for the light in the back of the image. That big opening makes it seem like you're walking away from something, instead of toward it (even though I see something big in the distance...it's very faint). This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it takes a lot of the mystery away from the photo. It seems more like an image you'd take during a tour on vacation than an image that's supposed to entertain. If I were you, I'd focus on making that opening at the end of the walk a bit more looming. It doesn't have to be dark, but I'd certainly "bring it forward" so that we feel more like we're walking toward something we don't understand.

The blending and such looks really nice, though. Good technical work.

Nice progress Tjerk!
Are you gonna do some color grading in the end, adding a dominant hue or something? That might work in leveling the overall look of the image.
Keep up!

Suirebit-3DT
13-04-2010, 10:41 AM
I think the scale and perspective of the statues&stairs is off, you need to rework them or find other statues in the right perspective. I would also get rid of that fire crack in the tree (or whatever it is) and adjust the contrast on statues.

Another thing that bothers me is that light is coming from all over the places; for instance the right tree has light coming from right, the statues have light coming from left (and too strong for a forest) and the forest itself has light coming from front...

Last but not least, I agree with what was said about the far away opening/light. I think that if you remove it, half the lighting issues are solved.

Don't get me wrong, the only reason I'm posting this is because I think this image has potential and could qualify if you work on what I just said :)

Hi, I liked the bloom effect as well, but people are complaying on the light background and the light coming from everywhere. When i remove the light from the background or change it to a more normal one, the scene looks odd... When i make i more dark, i like it as well, but its different

14-04-2010, 10:59 PM
Hi Everybody,

i had some more time to work on everything now. I changed some things. I did not like the lights on the sticky bones and the way everything was working to the back. Because of this the focus was too much on the background. Also i deleted some elements from the scene, because i did a little bit too much with it. Its more subtle know. I know it is different from what everybody else is making.

They are making the more traditional digitalle matte paintings, but i liked to used the technique in a different way. I hope that you like this last update and ill continue to make minor adjustments.

The idea of the light bulbs came from a somehow futuristic vision. When people think of aztek of egyptian culture alot of people believe they get there knowledge from the " aliens " and so i liked the idea of lightbulbs in a forest with no electric wiring.

Here is the picture and hope you like it.

Looks better and better...one major thing is the blur. behind the statue at the left the bg is too blurry. the skull looks awesome but off the picture..so may you can sharpen the stone rock and paint some shadows. the bright green leaf at the right behind the tree looks off...because there is no attachment to nothing. My eyes follows the path into the BG, may you can add another Statue there or something bigger mysterious thing.

you have to watch carefully to the perspective and scaling issues at the floor near the stairs in the right side off the picture. the grass and leafes are too big and blurry in comparision to the stairs i think.

AHH and the light bulbs are great...but may you can add a distort there (hot light bulb^^) or an attachment to the socket.

I hope you understand me...my english is not so good.

I like your picture more and more...and hope i can help you a little bit.

Maybe you can add some sort of effect on the light coming from the bulbs, as if its powered by plasma energy or something. It needs something to give it a more "alien" look.
And maybe some bugs flying around it, like Moths and mosquitoes.
But I like it.

Hi Everybody,

So i listened and i tried to make it better by doing something different.

I added the always mysterious maya calender in there. I like it, because the maya calender fortold that the end of the world would come in 2012. People also believe the maya & egyptian culture to have connections with aliens.

I liked the idea of an ( alien like maya calender statue ) that would be sort of the main source giver of all knowledge and power.

I hope you like this version even more. I like the fact that my eye goes back and forth now and that it makes it more mysterious.

it works well as mood, but your volumetrics are still wrong, as well as the lights. For instance the torch/light in the statue hand should lit it's entire head, whereas the center part of the image is too bright (should be in a fall off)

Imagine this was a movie scene where Lara croft/Indiana Jones enters the tomb. Would you believe the scene, as it is now?

What you need to do is to draw some lines from all the light sources and then see where they intersect and then create shadows and lights accordingly :)

I understand what your saying. Im still working on the lighting and you are very right on the statue's face. but im going to work on it. Perhaps its too bright, but it differs from one computer screen to the other. My studio monitors are calibrated and it looks good, but on my laptop it looks very bright. Ill try to fix it though... Hi Everybody,

Its nice to see that people are sharing thought and ideas. Its always good to see people having nice conversation and expanding visions. I didn't have much time today, but i did want to work a little bit on the lighting and details as promised. I worked on the shadows in various parts of the piece. I did some perspective changes on the left stairs and i adjusted the stone path a little to get it more right. The lighting on the statue has been changed a little and the overal picture is a little bit darker. I hope you like it...

Here it is...

I want to share the original starting point of this scene again. This is for the people that don't want to scroll back the thread and want to see both pictures together. Sometimes its amazing to see that the original picture is almost gone :)

Nice work here.
I prefer the ambient/atmoshpere of your starting ones, more green, less dark.

rofiqalfata +1 I agree about its comments

Here are somes of my comments, hope it can help you:
Sometimes when you play too much with lightning/shadow onto a picture, it adds blur and you get some sort of "smooth" and "soft" result, you kill the details.
How can you counter that? Adding materia or grain on top of it, or using others lightning techniques.
The skulls catch too much the eye, maybe it's wanted, but it pop out too much. Level of details, scale it down 80%.
If you're going dark (some kind of cave) may I suggest a few more big roots (background and foreground)?
The flower/vegetal on the right side is kinda floating and too big, it's not working with the rest of your composition, another place or delete.

Hey man, this is some really good job, keep it up!

here's my comments...

Hi,

I know that the shield is not lid corretly at the moment. I have to remove the original lights from the statue. The Maya Calender is casting light because it has some mysterious light elements inside of the stone of the calender itself, so the calender is not lid by the other 2 lights. Than it would look weird. The skulls do cast shadows, but you can only see it in the bigger version, so perhaps i can make them more visible.... Thank you for you comment.

When i go for a more realistic lighting i have to make it more dark. The Skulls are the main " characters " of the piece and i want them in there like that. I will create a quick mock-up in 3D to see how the lighting falls in there. Thank you for your comment and hope you still like the scene....

nice concept . well i'm not a mate painter so i will not go in to technical crits or similar but lighting need some serious work. shadows are missing all over the place. its a forest. a deeo jungle, and it is not completely drk in there so a little sun light from the sky coming through the forests leaths would come in handy, and some shadows that are casted from the various objects in the scene. and there is some saturation issue as i see. the jungle looks saturated and dark, though pasted objects are so blank and bright . compared to the background they look out of place.
sory for not perfect english :) .
good luck, it has potential

I have to work a little on the maya calender, but overal i think the lighting should be much better now. Perhaps i bring back 1 lightbulb. Ill update tonight. I put the focus more on the snails and the skull , because i actually liked the snails and people wanted to see the light coming from somewhere so therefore i changed it.

I worked for 5 to 6 years behind a small desk , but because i got more work i could design a new studio and my father who is an amazing craftman created my design as you see on the picture. The whole back wall is from wood, so i can put my wires inside of that. I thank him with all my heart for doing that, because i start everyday with a smile :).

Hope you like it too..

back in the day, when i was young and had nothing to do ( god i miss those days! lol ) i used to play a lot of turok and Pitfall. This is what this reminds me off. Its a nice piece. But it feels too busy. There are so many things in this picture, is nice to look at. However, it feels too dark. Perhaps you need to transition from cold to hot from the bottom up, and still retain what you have there.

Adding rays of ligth may help bring balance to the left side of the piece.

Im not a matte painter....so i cant really give u much feedback. Good works man, keep them up!

Here is another update. I removed the second statue, because it was getting a little bit too crowded in the picture. And for the people that thought the scene was too dark i made it lighter with extra lightrays and made the light more warm. The sky is a bit too blurred so perhaps i am going to look for another sky, but i hope you like it..

I personally feel that the picture should breath more lost in sense of colour. I changed the colour to a little more autumn color scheme. Here it is...

nice work so far, tjerk. couldnt respond sooner. my keyboard is MIA.

i think the statue could do with a bit of damage. everything else is touched by time and decay. it makes the statue stand out. dont know if this is intentional(in a sort of: epic statue dont care bout time: kinda way), but if it is, it should be a bit more obvious.

otherwise, it needs damage ;)

Very good progress. I like the new colors and the much more mysterious feeling.
I would put the rock with the skulls partly in shadow of the big tree to make it stand out a little less. And the integration of the slabs still needs some work in a few places.

much better. i like some small details as the snake.
thoug i have some crits :)
some parts such as bushes far away in the back of the image are to clean and pops out of the picture. the same goes for the sculs, that big obelisk, snake.
as for the snake - its beautiful but its too clean and detailed compared to objects around it.
a slight blur for the obelisk and the bushes near it would make the scene more real and give the sence deph. as for the sculs - they are too clean .
resume of my words would be - equalize qality of the objects in the scene. now it looks good but not enough good. and fix that part in top left of the obelisk . it looks way off . either there are branches of the tree or some one thought that its a enormous coockie and bit that part off. :D
keep up the good work. good luck

First of all, I have to say that studio is amazing... its no wonder you get so much inspiration in there. It looks so clear/almost mesmerizing. Loving that design on the wall, and what room is finished, without a piano :D

Really nice work you've done on this

Do I have it right, that you have used pictures to create the painting, with some editing etc? No 3D models at all?

With the technique of digital matte you create something from your imagination with the use of photographs. By editing all of it you can create what you want. Its something i did a few years back when i was working for mad olive studios and i wanted to try it again. Its been 2 years or so since i actually had the time to create a digital matte like this...

Most of the time a digital matte is used as a background setpiece and 90% of the time a digital matte is a helicopter view. I tried to do something else and put myself on the ground. Thanks for your comment Kage.

I have sad it alot, but also to you.. Its been too long Kage :)

hey man

i mean that the maya calender is not part of the picture. the calender dont have any visual attachments to the scene. Its in the BG between the trees...may you can add a socket or something. at the moment it looks off the scene. (maybe too dark) somethings is strange with the object.

But i like your picture...and hope i can help you a little bit. be careful with the layer blends.

Its not the main subject in the scene and it is in a darker part of the forest. My personal feeling is that its actually part of the scene, just as much as i intended too. When i thought about what you said, i understood what you meant, but a stone like that could stand like that for numerous reasons. If there is a big stone behind the calender it would hold it up.

I showed it like this because the calender is always shown like this. Sometimes is has some broken stuff around it, but they never show an support from underneath it. The stone itself has some serious weight, so it could use itself as support as well. It doesn't bother me, but i understand what you mean.

Here are some picture that show the calender without a real support to hold it up.

I updated some small elements. Not really visible in the smaller version. The spiderwebs are visible. I added some spiderwebs to give it a little bit more lost in time feel. Its a small elements, but hope you like it. I also wrote a small story for the picture. Sometimes i have the need to right something with a picture, because art is a big part of emotion...

I like it.

If i really wanted to pick at it i would say to add magical dust sparkles in the air and think about the lighting on the round thing, maybe darker at the top, obscuring it a bit. Less is more and all that..
