Yes, I know it's another car, but it looks great and it would be nice to have it in 3D (so i'll give it a try).

It's my second car. I have no blueprints for this one, just a few photos and a scale model. So, some proportions could be wrong.

Nice work so far...can't wait to see you start on the other sections!

Pretty frickin' impressive for no blueprints.

Keep it up!

Peace Bro,

18-06-2003, 10:23 PM
Really frickin nice, your making me want to open up my abandoned car project and rework the hell out of it. lol

Raf
19-06-2003, 02:59 PM
Thanx everyone.

Exterior is almost finished. There are still some things to take care of around windows, and add few details.

Raf
20-06-2003, 06:15 PM
Nobody wants to look at my classic car.:(

Well I'm going to keep posting anyways.

If someone has pictures of some details on "Gullwing", please send them to me, or let me know where i can find them. It's hard to find some decent pictures of this car.

20-06-2003, 06:24 PM
wow that loks amazing, really impressive

loser
20-06-2003, 06:45 PM
i'm just wondering, how do you make your headlights? they look really good, and i'm not sure how to do them on the car i'm working on.

Gl2eEn
20-06-2003, 07:03 PM
looks very good, needs some work inside tho :p well anyway very good model dude

Raf
21-06-2003, 03:27 PM
I'll make the interior too, but later.

loser: I made the inside of the headlights and assigned very reflective material to it (it is the same chrome material i used on the rest of the car). Glass on the headlight is made of two surfaces one is moved a little behind. First one is reflective and has IOR 1,0. The second is completely transparent. It has only IOR 1,55 and Gradient Ramp bump map.

loser
21-06-2003, 07:22 PM
thanks for that picture, i'll have to try that

Cyborg
21-06-2003, 10:39 PM
i might be wrong since i've only seen this car in the Xbox Game SegaGT2002 but the roof looks a little high

Raf
22-06-2003, 08:35 AM
I'm not exactly sure. Like I said, I don't have the blueprints. It is realy old car and back then they did make high roofs.
Here is the picture of a real car.

Raf
22-06-2003, 08:40 AM
And here is picture from te side to compare.

Nothing new, just made some corrections to the body and some details.

Gecko
22-06-2003, 03:36 PM
If you add details such as windscreen wipers and door handles and mirrors and stuff, I would have thought that last rendering was an actual photograph!

VERY VERY VERY impressive.

What modelling program is that by the way?

Ivinia
22-06-2003, 04:59 PM
Gecko - Ha! I thought the same thing! When that image first popped up I said, "Now there's a good photograph...wait a sec!"

Raf - Incredible job, can you post it from other angles too please? This one looks like it has some showcase potential...

Ivinia
22-06-2003, 05:17 PM
Ok, I think I found something to crit.

1] The hieght of the front windshield looks a little too much. From your photographs, it appears that there isn't as big of a difference in height between the passenger window and the windshield. As a matter of fact, it looks like the roof juts out slightly over the windshield in the photograph where your model looks like there is a smooth transition between the two.

2] I think there is more of an angle on the metal strip that runs up the passenger window. Your's is going straight up and down.

Hopefully my eyes aren't decieving me.:)

This is one beautiful modeling AND texturing job!!

Raf
23-06-2003, 11:27 AM
Ivinia, you should call yourself Hawkeye. Good crit, i'll fix that.

Gecko, it is 3DS Max 5 with brazil.

Right now i've fixed rear sidewindows and added wipers and mirrors. If someone sees any other mistake please, let me know. Also i need picture of door handles.

Like the others said.... If you add all the details and fit it in a nice scene i could look like a photograph!

Again. great model....

keep posting :)

Raf
24-06-2003, 11:05 AM
I've fixed the windshield and the floor, but there is no point in posting picture because it's the same as the others. There will new posts when some of the interior is done. Now i have some other things to do and this will take some time.

I definitely plan to make some big pictures of this car and they will be posted somewhere.

Thanx everyone for c&c.:)

Raf
26-06-2003, 08:37 AM
The hardest part of the interior is finished. I've matched te leather edges with the rubber sealings in the inside.

Thanx :D .

scott: I don't know what my next project will be, I guess it won't be a car. I wanted to make Ferarri 250 SWB but there are not many pictures of it (even less than for this car). Plus i need a break from cars.

I've made some renderings in black but forgot to save them:o , so i'll post it in black as soon as i have anything new to show. I'm making the switches on the dashbard and it's going very slow.

so here is one of my older renderings made to look like b&w photo

Beatifull model.

Raf
30-07-2003, 07:13 PM
I use Brazil r/s with HDRI images just for reflections. For lighting there are 10 omni lights to simulate skylight and one direct light.

The same results would be with default renderer but rendering would last much longer. This way it is finished in 3 to 4 mins.

BTW i've lost max file with materials so i'll have to set it up all over again.

Hmm how could i ever miss this thread, being an old car lover.
I love the detailing, they can kill you but see what they do to the final result. Take the wheels and the hubcaps. Superb.

Raf
04-08-2003, 06:44 PM
Yeah, yeah i know it can't turn. Ijust keep avoiding every opportunity to make the steering wheel. I'm a bit lazy :P

But i expriment with paint job whenever there is time. Here is the silver one.

P.S. does anyone of you old car enthusiasts have pictures of interior on this car. THX

Thanx dropdog, now i have photo that shows the inside of the doors. That's realy difficult to find, it will be very usefull.

you made it just like chocolate..... no matter how come you have, you still want more :o very very very nice....

although, im not too crazy about the hdri you have been using :p

Dire Wolf
11-08-2003, 05:40 PM
Wow.. Looks good, nice detail looks like the real thing

Raf
12-08-2003, 07:03 AM
scott: about the hdri. I'm sick of it also, but it's the best one i have (it has 15MB). And without it this car doesn't look that good. I have some hdris from the link you gave and they make weird reflections. I get some pink spots.

I thought of losing the hdri and building a scene around for reflections. The easiest thing would be to make a photostudio with whit background.

scott99
12-08-2003, 07:25 AM
LOL, theres 2 good ones that i use.... its one where its in like a room [used it on my light blue s2000] an and one with like sun area with a pole and a building that looks nice... and then theres one that creats buildings around your car.... with a white area right above it which is what i used on my 1967 ferrari p4 on the final render

scott99
12-08-2003, 07:26 AM
i would say i would just render it for ya but i dont think ya trust me good enough for that yet lmao :halo:

Raf
12-08-2003, 02:39 PM
It's not that i don't trust you. I just like to have things under control.:D

Besides that i found one good hdri in my library. A while ago i downloaded bunch of pictures without looking at them. Maybe i should search my hard drive better.

Here is the new scene (added a few details but it's hard to see on this picture)

Trevorn
12-08-2003, 03:13 PM
 The Car looks Fantastic, The new hdri looks great, but the car seems to be floating. There are no shadows where the tires meet the asphalt. Other than that though, like I said amazing work.:D

3Dan
12-08-2003, 03:28 PM
I agree with Trevorn. Such splendid model deserves proper lighting too. Try and place a couple of lights front and side to bring up the details. Specially the headlights.

Raf
13-08-2003, 06:04 AM
Well the idea was that the car is completely in shadow, surrounded by buildings. So there is just diffuse shadow under the car. But you're right you can't see th front very well.

Here is picture with real shadow. I have it in 1280x960, so if someone wants it let me know.

Theese HDRIs are from http://hdri.3dweave.com/library/ . Pictures were taken in Vienna.

13-08-2003, 08:43 AM
Man, this is awesome. If only I could texture and light as well as you can my cars would look a lot better. I love this car.

Raf
13-08-2003, 05:45 PM
Wow, that's a real compliment coming from you karabo.:D Most of the things i learned about 3d was on this forums and tuts (yours too).
OK ... and i've been messing around with max for about three years. :)

This car renders so good only because of environment maps, even with just default max lighting it looks just fine. I don't use skylights because they're too slow. Lighting and texturing aren't my specialities.

Raf
03-09-2003, 06:58 PM
2 addict: check your PMs, i need some e-mail adress because picture is too big to post and PMs or e-mailing through threedy doesnt support attachments.

... and if someone is interested in silver paint setings here is picture. I use brazil carpaint shader only for metalic paints. Ordinary paints are usual raytrace material with around 30% reflection.

Raf
03-09-2003, 07:13 PM
Hi DD, i havent seen your post (we posted at same time). I'll make the clay rendering and post it soon.
And about the windows, it required a lot of tweaking.
First i made a profile of those sealings around the window with spline. Then a closed spline in the window hole (3d snap on vertexes. With those two splines i made swep and adjusted it with twist control. Then there were still some mistakes and that you have to edit manualy. then you just have to build a glass inside the sealing. I clloapsed plane to editable poly and edited it.

Hope i was clear enough, it was borring process and isnt easy to explain in short.

droopdog

Dire Wolf
21-10-2003, 07:23 PM
Is that black tape on the front of the headlights? If so I think it is a little too transparent. Besides that WOW.

Raf
22-10-2003, 08:30 AM
Roobbod: i set hdri just like it said in tutorials and material has reflective set at about 30%

Dire Wolf: It is, and i noticed that also but didnt feel like waiting for another render. Maybe i should put translucency on it, instead of transparency.

... and another colour scheme (it is supposed to be something like pearl white)

Man that is some amazing work. I love the clay render. It looks like it could of been the prototype for the original design.

Raf
22-10-2003, 03:13 PM
THX all.

Kujoe: there are some details on the car paint and other things posted earlier in this thread (page 5 and 6 i think). And dont worry, it took me JUST two yrs to get that paint (OK things started to happen faster when i joined this forum).

Morzog: Love your signature. Glad i wasnt the onlyone who felt like that.;)

Since most people arent well acquainted with this car, i might post some technical specs. So:
This car was first presented in 1954. at New York Racing Car Show. It was a civil version of racing prototype from 1953 that won first two places on Le Mans and Carrera PanAmericana.
Engine is 6 cylinder in-line, 2996 ccm with direct fuel injection.
240 HP at 5700 rpm
Top speed is 240 km/h and it goes 0-100km/h in 8,5 secs
About 1400 cars were made and the price today would be around 500 000 $.

In general im not big fan of mercedes but they certanly made a few cars with soul, like this one.

arreal

25-10-2003, 10:11 PM
Holy crap this just keeps getting better. Those last detail shots are just beautiful. I would love to be able to model half as well as you. A couple of shots with those gull wing doors fully spread would be really nice.

Es ist wunderbar!
Real studio style. Maybe brighten a bit the light. Did you use a rotunda?
Would you care to show a wire of the whole setup?

Raf
03-11-2003, 11:12 AM
Thx 3dan. Did i use what? Realy i dont know what is it.

I use JUST one rectangular ligtht (18x4.5m), you can clearly see its reflection in the car.

Ill post a wire as soon as i get home.

3Dan
03-11-2003, 11:29 AM
It is a rounded transition between ground and back wall to simulate infinite backdrop. Photo studios use it a lot.
I have just done one to render my model on and thought you were using it too.

Raf
03-11-2003, 11:47 AM
Ah, so thats rotunda.:o Actualy i've used those, but not this time.

There is black background color and a infinite dark gray groundplane. There is no sky light and area light fades away. So it just seems like that.

I saw a light. This is how it looks in reality.

The 300 SL is absolutely one of the classiest Mercedes made and you have built an absolutely classy model of it. Kudos! If/when you get some time could you crit my WIP, a Ferrari 206 GT Dino? It is my first time to model a car and I could use all the help I can get. Thanks and keep up the awesome work!

Hi Raf

Really nice car you have there. I hope you'll explain me how you made the material for the chrome parts.
I made different tutorials for chrome materials but i didn't suceed :( Hope you can help me

Raf
10-11-2003, 08:42 AM
Hi thyrael.
Actualy making chrome has nothing to do with material (ok maybe it does, a little).:D All you have to do is create nice environment (HDR maps or light and dark objects in the scene). It took me 'just' 2 yrs to figure that out. For mat i used dark grey or grey raytrace material with 60 to 80% reflections (no fallof maps or anything)

I made some changes on the body, again. Every time i think there is no more work there i find some new references that make me change something.:grr:
Now i even found blueprints and i don't know if comparing them with model would be smart. (blueprints - http://www.vsrnonline.com/VSRN_Main.html ) There are a lot of blueprints of old cars and all of them can be put to good use, some of them have even crosssections. Most of those cars are old prototypes and are not well known.

Anyway this is render of the last version of my merc.

thx blackwolf.

I'm not too sure about the movie. My poor old 750MHz AMD has trouble with the still shots as it is. But there certainly will be some stills with the doors(wings) spread. It is just a few days of work to complete the interior (and redo some things that are wrong) but i just have thigs to do and can't get few days in a row, free.

But one day...

I was away for a "little" while. Recently i started redoing this project. This time with blueprints.

Raf

this is the interior. It also required quiet a few invisible changes.
Anyway ,dashboard is finished. Maybe i finish this after all.:p

I have a little problem here.

Does anyone know how to make coloured plastic look good, im not happy with my blinkers.

And also reflection of the front grilll is brighter than the grill itself, and i dont know why is that.

I wanna kill myself!

Raf
22-09-2004, 03:58 PM
Yes, it is my second car in max, but you may check date on the first post in this thread. It is more than a year old.
I started modeling with CAD called SolidWorks (had to know it for my college). First thing i ever did in max was a helicopter (bell 212), than a few little models and a car for design competition (Not very good).
I didn't know nearly as much about modeling at the begining of this thread.

P.S. does anyone have answers on my previous question?

Raf
23-09-2004, 01:43 AM
Been experimenting with standard materials. I need some aluminium like metal and this is what came out. Does it look like metal or plastic.

Kujoe
23-09-2004, 02:06 AM
I would say aluminium.:)

Raf
09-10-2004, 05:15 PM
THX all :D

jawahar: Yes i too love the details, seen your automation system, and phones. Like it, lots of details :D

xtreme: Nice image editing i like it. There will be some 1280*960 wallpapers soon i guess. But there is always something to fix something with the model. I dont know about sharing the model, maybe some parts of the mesh but not all. It was not intended for sale also. If anybody wishes to see some particular part of the model rendered or wire just let me know.

blackwolf: i dont have hdri. There is very, very, very big area light which i tried to replace with 90 spotlights and shadowmaps. When i got results that were satisfying, rendering times got seriously close to those with area light, and shadows still werent quiet right. The area light didnt give good specularity so i turned that spotlights to just show specularity. I guess that was too much for my 750 MHz Duron, but rendering from outside 800*600 picture without specularity can be finished in just under 30 minutes.

If someone has some crits say it, i want to know if something looks weird.
This is picture of leather with some specularity.

Wow, I am extremely impressed, Abs. gorgeous renders. And fanastic modeling.

A couple of questions if thats ok ..
1 , did you take any steps to make sure the chrome looked right inside the car. ?
Normally i have a job to get the reflections working correctly inside the cars.

2. the area light. how did you make it visible? as a big rectangle.

thanks a lot.

Awesome level of detail.
I guess your model is pretty hefty in terms of polycount by now.
I always save my work with the 'Save Selected" option, selecting, say, the bodyshell, then the set of tires, then the dashboard and so on. I anything happens to the model, like a crash (God forbids burt s**t happens), there will be the separate objects safely saved in individual files. Of course you can save each complete instrument, or the dash as a whole. But make sure you have the complete model split up into parts´ files. You´ll know precisely what object caused the crash as you merge each into the main file. It´s not as tiresome as it may seem. In the end i save all into a cd. Besides the single big model file of course.
Can´t wait to see your next model - when you are fullydone with htis one. Because i trust you´ll do another, sooner or later.

Raf

THX all:D

cgstripe: chrome parts inside have the same materialss aplied as outside. I made two chrome mats (one is less reflective) and aplied them where it seemed proper. Didn't have trouble with that. And area light is matched to the white plane (RGB output 2.5), same in size, with 100 self-illumination.

3Dan: Yes i am. Beginning to think that it's some sort of mental condition, can't stop. Just keep doing smaller and smaller details. Now it is about 600 000 faces. That's why i don't have more than one model to show of.
Soon i'll have to do a team project for my school, a conceptual design of airplane. So next model will be plane :D
Funny thing you mention this about saving. I have a few files of the complete car, two just with model and one for each scene. And it was doing fine for a while. Then i wanted to try how fast can athlon64 render and took my files to another town. Instead of copying files to a flashdisk i cut/pasted them. When i came home they werent on my computer any more (to my big surprise:eek: ). A few other unexpected things were going on so i was able to retrive them after more than a week.

I played with scene setups. Much simpler lighting. It's refreshing to have 20 minute renders

Raf
26-10-2004, 03:10 AM
This is same setup from opposite angle. Sun is set very low (about 15 degrees) and it wipes out diffuse shadow from under the car so it look afloat, but i can asure you, it is on the ground.

Here i go again. And no, the car is not finished yet.
A while ago i installed Max again so i felt a need to at least finish the outside. Had to reacquaint myself with the model again. Tire texture is done (... ok maybe it needs some twaking).

Also, soon, it will be 2 years since the begining of this thread so, to celebrate it, i'll listen to xtreme an post a max file of merc. It will be earlier version without all the details and materials, but it's something :)
I'll post it sometimes today, just have to host it somewhere.

And here is the link to older version of my model (max file).

http://web.vip.hr/plane_crazy.vip/300SL_Free.zip

On this one shape is inacurate (difference between new and this one is shown on page 9 of this thread). Also interior is not finished and materials are not included. More or less everything about the materials has been said on previous pages. Other than that meshes were changed slightly, usualy just by moving vertices.
Hope this file will be useful to those who want to see some new or old methods of controling mesh smooth modifier. :)

10-03-2006, 02:16 AM
Looks great but for some reason your wip renders and individual zooms/camera tweaks look a whole lot better and more realistic than the last big render. Maybe its just the lighting in the last one, because the reflections on the grey car are very bright and it looks fake.

Amazing progress though.

Raf
10-03-2006, 01:17 PM
Sharky: yes this render looks little differen, but the lighting setup is the same. Maybe it is because light is concentrated on small area and it doesn't illuminate those two cars enough while reflections remain the same. Will try to do something about it.

Blackwolf: Yeah, it is. At first I was't sure, when looking at reference photos, what it is because on every car it looked different. In some cases it looks like it is all metal and on others there is canvas cover with wooden frame.

Almost every paticular gullwing has some differences. This interior setup is taken from a single car (there were good ref photos of it).
