Yes, I know it's another car, but it looks great and it would be nice to have it in 3D (so i'll give it a try).
It's my second car. I have no blueprints for this one, just a few photos and a scale model. So, some proportions could be wrong.
16-06-2003, 09:28 AM
Nice work so far...can't wait to see you start on the other sections!
Pretty frickin' impressive for no blueprints.
Keep it up!
WOW, thanx. That was fast.
16-06-2003, 09:40 AM
looks good sofar :) keep up working dude..
Here is an update. This time I turned on anti-aliasing on raytrace objects.
16-06-2003, 11:10 PM
great work! can you post a wire?
yes VERY nice work
nothing to crit, especially since ive never seen the car before
Here it is, I'm done with the roof.
18-06-2003, 02:12 PM
Great work ,looks great too,I love cars:D
Sorry, I haven't seen the wire request.
I finished the wheels too. The bodywork came along just fine, but theese details are killing me.:p
18-06-2003, 10:23 PM
Really frickin nice, your making me want to open up my abandoned car project and rework the hell out of it. lol
Exterior is almost finished. There are still some things to take care of around windows, and add few details.
Nobody wants to look at my classic car.:(
Well I'm going to keep posting anyways.
If someone has pictures of some details on "Gullwing", please send them to me, or let me know where i can find them. It's hard to find some decent pictures of this car.
20-06-2003, 06:24 PM
wow that loks amazing, really impressive
20-06-2003, 06:45 PM
i'm just wondering, how do you make your headlights? they look really good, and i'm not sure how to do them on the car i'm working on.
20-06-2003, 07:03 PM
looks very good, needs some work inside tho :p well anyway very good model dude
I'll make the interior too, but later.
loser: I made the inside of the headlights and assigned very reflective material to it (it is the same chrome material i used on the rest of the car). Glass on the headlight is made of two surfaces one is moved a little behind. First one is reflective and has IOR 1,0. The second is completely transparent. It has only IOR 1,55 and Gradient Ramp bump map.
21-06-2003, 07:22 PM
thanks for that picture, i'll have to try that
21-06-2003, 10:39 PM
i might be wrong since i've only seen this car in the Xbox Game SegaGT2002 but the roof looks a little high
I'm not exactly sure. Like I said, I don't have the blueprints. It is realy old car and back then they did make high roofs.
Here is the picture of a real car.
And here is picture from te side to compare.
Nothing new, just made some corrections to the body and some details.
22-06-2003, 03:36 PM
If you add details such as windscreen wipers and door handles and mirrors and stuff, I would have thought that last rendering was an actual photograph!
VERY VERY VERY impressive.
What modelling program is that by the way?
22-06-2003, 04:59 PM
Gecko - Ha! I thought the same thing! When that image first popped up I said, "Now there's a good photograph...wait a sec!"
Raf - Incredible job, can you post it from other angles too please? This one looks like it has some showcase potential...
22-06-2003, 05:17 PM
Ok, I think I found something to crit.
1] The hieght of the front windshield looks a little too much. From your photographs, it appears that there isn't as big of a difference in height between the passenger window and the windshield. As a matter of fact, it looks like the roof juts out slightly over the windshield in the photograph where your model looks like there is a smooth transition between the two.
2] I think there is more of an angle on the metal strip that runs up the passenger window. Your's is going straight up and down.
Hopefully my eyes aren't decieving me.:)
This is one beautiful modeling AND texturing job!!
Ivinia, you should call yourself Hawkeye. Good crit, i'll fix that.
Gecko, it is 3DS Max 5 with brazil.
Right now i've fixed rear sidewindows and added wipers and mirrors. If someone sees any other mistake please, let me know. Also i need picture of door handles.
23-06-2003, 10:06 PM
floor is sticking through
reallly cool, make a big one of the blue one and ill put that as my desktop ehhe
23-06-2003, 10:07 PM
darn picture, here it is
23-06-2003, 10:15 PM
Excellent *thumbes up*
23-06-2003, 10:54 PM
Beautiful model! :D
Like the others said.... If you add all the details and fit it in a nice scene i could look like a photograph!
Again. great model....
keep posting :)
I've fixed the windshield and the floor, but there is no point in posting picture because it's the same as the others. There will new posts when some of the interior is done. Now i have some other things to do and this will take some time.
I definitely plan to make some big pictures of this car and they will be posted somewhere.
Thanx everyone for c&c.:)
The hardest part of the interior is finished. I've matched te leather edges with the rubber sealings in the inside.
26-06-2003, 11:28 AM
WOW, this is really amazing work. You are a 3d graphics MASTER. Very good job mate. Keep it posting.
:D :D :D I luv the model totally <licks the car on the screen...> You have the cleanest mesh that I have ever seen mate. ****** excellent. Cant crit, and cant say enough good things about it.
(ps) did I mention awesomenes?)
26-06-2003, 11:51 AM
this model is beaUTIFUL.... once is finsihed, i wouldnt be surprised if you were able to sell this model for some money lol , very nice, cant wait to see more
WOW. Thanx guys.:o The mesh is not that clean, I just hide mistakes very good.
Here is an update.
Finaly there was some time for me to continue working on my car. Here is the dashboard.
19-07-2003, 10:49 PM
very nice model amazing with no refs. and your right the Mercedes 300 SL is a superb car
Thanx. Finally someone who is familiar with this car.
damn thats an awesome car dude :D
20-07-2003, 11:36 AM
Very nice color you got on the SL. Also the dashboard is very cool lookin'
20-07-2003, 05:50 PM
COOL work man , really detailed model, can i see the mesh/wireframe after the model is complete ? If u don't mind ... ;)
20-07-2003, 07:16 PM
nice modelling there!!!!, and i love that car...one of the nicest lookning cars ever built, i think
wow, thats some really great modelling
im impressed with what talented people can make these programs do :D
keep it up!
The mesh is posted on 1st page of this thread. there are only few basic parts but the main shape is there.
This is about third time i was readjusting the roof and i hope, the last. This should be the final shape of the body.
26-07-2003, 04:00 PM
looks absolutely beatiful...i would love to see that car in black or grey...
26-07-2003, 04:36 PM
truely amazing... works as blueprints deffinately hehe..... and it looks like the real thing :D, any thoughts on your project after this one?
27-07-2003, 12:02 AM
Awesome Job:eek:  . How did I miss this thread. Great modeling and textures. I thought the last post was your reference.
27-07-2003, 01:58 AM
just beautifull, i love this car! ;)
keep it rolling m8!!!
Thanx :D .
scott: I don't know what my next project will be, I guess it won't be a car. I wanted to make Ferarri 250 SWB but there are not many pictures of it (even less than for this car). Plus i need a break from cars.
I've made some renderings in black but forgot to save them:o , so i'll post it in black as soon as i have anything new to show. I'm making the switches on the dashbard and it's going very slow.
so here is one of my older renderings made to look like b&w photo
29-07-2003, 10:53 AM
btw what render did you use?
30-07-2003, 05:14 PM
I use Brazil r/s with HDRI images just for reflections. For lighting there are 10 omni lights to simulate skylight and one direct light.
The same results would be with default renderer but rendering would last much longer. This way it is finished in 3 to 4 mins.
BTW i've lost max file with materials so i'll have to set it up all over again.
04-08-2003, 02:49 PM
wow really nice interior, to bad the car cant turn!
i like the detail and the little handbars
keep updating it, coz i love those old interiors(in fact everything about an old car =)
Hmm how could i ever miss this thread, being an old car lover.
I love the detailing, they can kill you but see what they do to the final result. Take the wheels and the hubcaps. Superb.
Yeah, yeah i know it can't turn. Ijust keep avoiding every opportunity to make the steering wheel. I'm a bit lazy :P
But i expriment with paint job whenever there is time. Here is the silver one.
P.S. does anyone of you old car enthusiasts have pictures of interior on this car. THX
04-08-2003, 06:59 PM
nice raf, i like the silver
btw here, i found some interior of your mercedes
i hope it helps you!
04-08-2003, 08:22 PM
wonderful...and it´s a black and a grey one too...i love this...keep this up it´s comming along very nicely
Thanx dropdog, now i have photo that shows the inside of the doors. That's realy difficult to find, it will be very usefull.
Do you know anything more about the car on the picture. It seems customized to me (it has blue leather, strange fabric on the seats and more gages than usual).
05-08-2003, 10:22 AM
no i dont really know more about the car, but i do know ,its not a standard car, but ill post some other pic, they are a bit better and i think they are standard, i'm not sure!
but i just figured out that the pics are a bit to big, so i'm gonna give a url, i uploaded the pic to a site
normally copy paste if it doesnt go
Thanx again dropdog, for your pictures. They've been very useful.
So here is a little update.
10-08-2003, 05:04 PM
wow raf thats really nice,i'm glad you used my pics =)
show us more asap ;)
:eek: :eek::eek: :eek::eek: :eek::eek: :eek::eek: :eek::eek: :eek::eek: :eek::eek: :eek::eek: :eek::eek: :eek::eek: :eek::eek: :eek::eek: :eek::eek: :eek::eek: :eek::eek: :eek::eek: :eek::eek: :eek::eek: :eek::eek: :eek:
this looks perfect

GREAT WORK! Awesome! This car is Beautiful!
10-08-2003, 06:30 PM
... if i had seen some of those pics u made in another place, i would have assumed they were photos
incredible attention to detail, i think we all could use a tip or two from you :D
I'am affraid that i won't be able to show you more that fast because i have to study for some exames. But if someone has some ideas aboutsome new camera angles or the scenes i should put my model in, tell me. I don't have time for some complicated scene. THX:D
... and this is the picture i wanted to post.
11-08-2003, 04:36 PM
NOW LOOK AT WHAT YOU HAVE DONE
you made it just like chocolate..... no matter how come you have, you still want more :o very very very nice....
although, im not too crazy about the hdri you have been using :p
11-08-2003, 05:40 PM
Wow.. Looks good, nice detail looks like the real thing
scott: about the hdri. I'm sick of it also, but it's the best one i have (it has 15MB). And without it this car doesn't look that good. I have some hdris from the link you gave and they make weird reflections. I get some pink spots.
I thought of losing the hdri and building a scene around for reflections. The easiest thing would be to make a photostudio with whit background.
12-08-2003, 07:25 AM
LOL, theres 2 good ones that i use.... its one where its in like a room [used it on my light blue s2000] an and one with like sun area with a pole and a building that looks nice... and then theres one that creats buildings around your car.... with a white area right above it which is what i used on my 1967 ferrari p4 on the final render
12-08-2003, 07:26 AM
i would say i would just render it for ya but i dont think ya trust me good enough for that yet lmao :halo:
It's not that i don't trust you. I just like to have things under control.:D
Besides that i found one good hdri in my library. A while ago i downloaded bunch of pictures without looking at them. Maybe i should search my hard drive better.
Here is the new scene (added a few details but it's hard to see on this picture)
12-08-2003, 03:00 PM
:D :) :p :p :p :p :p :p :p
12-08-2003, 03:13 PM
 The Car looks Fantastic, The new hdri looks great, but the car seems to be floating. There are no shadows where the tires meet the asphalt. Other than that though, like I said amazing work.:D
I agree with Trevorn. Such splendid model deserves proper lighting too. Try and place a couple of lights front and side to bring up the details. Specially the headlights.
Well the idea was that the car is completely in shadow, surrounded by buildings. So there is just diffuse shadow under the car. But you're right you can't see th front very well.
Here is picture with real shadow. I have it in 1280x960, so if someone wants it let me know.
Theese HDRIs are from http://hdri.3dweave.com/library/ . Pictures were taken in Vienna.
13-08-2003, 08:43 AM
Man, this is awesome. If only I could texture and light as well as you can my cars would look a lot better. I love this car.
Wow, that's a real compliment coming from you karabo.:D Most of the things i learned about 3d was on this forums and tuts (yours too).
OK ... and i've been messing around with max for about three years. :)
This car renders so good only because of environment maps, even with just default max lighting it looks just fine. I don't use skylights because they're too slow. Lighting and texturing aren't my specialities.
Still no updates. Just thought it would be nice to post bigger pic.
MERCEDES 300SL BY RAF
- that's the filename in my "Best car models" folder.
Looking forward to see more of your vintage classics.
... and from another angle.
Just ignore the fact that there are no seats in the car.
03-09-2003, 10:47 AM
Great work and good choice i like such cars ! :)
03-09-2003, 01:47 PM
.. oh, man.. i mean oh, god.. i mean..
was it really created by man?
cant find words to describe how beautiful she is
how much time did it it take you to create THiS?
ps still waiting for the promised wallpapers :)
03-09-2003, 06:58 PM
hye raf, i was looking thrue this interesting thread again, and i was wondering how you did a window, how you made all those things around it, can you explain that in short? ;)
btw i do you have a clay wallpaper, i love clay renders :d
2 addict: check your PMs, i need some e-mail adress because picture is too big to post and PMs or e-mailing through threedy doesnt support attachments.
... and if someone is interested in silver paint setings here is picture. I use brazil carpaint shader only for metalic paints. Ordinary paints are usual raytrace material with around 30% reflection.
Hi DD, i havent seen your post (we posted at same time). I'll make the clay rendering and post it soon.
And about the windows, it required a lot of tweaking.
First i made a profile of those sealings around the window with spline. Then a closed spline in the window hole (3d snap on vertexes. With those two splines i made swep and adjusted it with twist control. Then there were still some mistakes and that you have to edit manualy. then you just have to build a glass inside the sealing. I clloapsed plane to editable poly and edited it.
Hope i was clear enough, it was borring process and isnt easy to explain in short.
03-09-2003, 07:17 PM
ok thnx raf!
i ll try to make just a window, when i have finsihed it ill post it =)
thats the boring part about making cars, the small things :d
03-09-2003, 07:50 PM
here is a window i just made, but i made it a bit differend
tell me what ya think of it raf, btw dont look at material orso =)
04-09-2003, 02:15 AM
thnx very much:)
DD: That's basically it, you got it.
And modifier is called loft in max, but it's not real loft. More like sweep wit some extra options.
Addict: your wallpaper is sent.
04-09-2003, 11:52 AM
ahh....the power of 3 D :)
Here is clay rendering.
Ah yes, i found another mistake on the front of the car. Got to fix that. Perfect:mad:
And it's fixed. Glad that it didn't take too long:D
Fixed also few other things, added stripe and numbers, AND STILL NO SEATS:o
21-10-2003, 06:35 PM
Superb modelling, rendering and everything else. How did you get the HDRI so damn good? - everything I've tried is too reflective.
21-10-2003, 06:42 PM
Amazing work (starts to drool) :P
21-10-2003, 07:23 PM
Is that black tape on the front of the headlights? If so I think it is a little too transparent. Besides that WOW.
Roobbod: i set hdri just like it said in tutorials and material has reflective set at about 30%
Dire Wolf: It is, and i noticed that also but didnt feel like waiting for another render. Maybe i should put translucency on it, instead of transparency.
... and another colour scheme (it is supposed to be something like pearl white)
22-10-2003, 09:13 AM
Simply A-M-A-Z-I-N-G..!!! One of the best car model i`ve ever seen...Jaw dropping stuff for sure...Great great work mate...:)
22-10-2003, 12:47 PM
Raf sweeeeeeeeet  :D
oh How you get that scene in the paint like that.I've been trying to do that for yrs?:o
22-10-2003, 02:13 PM
Man that is some amazing work. I love the clay render. It looks like it could of been the prototype for the original design.
Kujoe: there are some details on the car paint and other things posted earlier in this thread (page 5 and 6 i think). And dont worry, it took me JUST two yrs to get that paint (OK things started to happen faster when i joined this forum).
Morzog: Love your signature. Glad i wasnt the onlyone who felt like that.;)
Since most people arent well acquainted with this car, i might post some technical specs. So:
This car was first presented in 1954. at New York Racing Car Show. It was a civil version of racing prototype from 1953 that won first two places on Le Mans and Carrera PanAmericana.
Engine is 6 cylinder in-line, 2996 ccm with direct fuel injection.
240 HP at 5700 rpm
Top speed is 240 km/h and it goes 0-100km/h in 8,5 secs
About 1400 cars were made and the price today would be around 500 000 $.
In general im not big fan of mercedes but they certanly made a few cars with soul, like this one.
22-10-2003, 03:53 PM
really amasing,I like the sl gullwing very much. The model is very good along with the perfect texture.I'm tring making the 300slr,another legacy gullwing.
22-10-2003, 04:09 PM
22-10-2003, 04:27 PM
wow i like it very much

24-10-2003, 11:55 AM
Where do you put the real shadow map? Thanks :o.up iin the render enviorment,or in brazil render enviorment?;)
arreal: Good luck with your slr.;)
kujoe: im not sure if i understand the question. I use sky light and one direct light with shadow map.
Just showing off with some new details (...and more oldones):D
25-10-2003, 10:11 PM
Holy crap this just keeps getting better. Those last detail shots are just beautiful. I would love to be able to model half as well as you. A couple of shots with those gull wing doors fully spread would be really nice.
Shots of spread wings will come, but first i'll have to make door hinges and piston mechanism.
Jus mananged to setup a photo studio for cars. Maybe it neds a ligt or two more.
Es ist wunderbar!
Real studio style. Maybe brighten a bit the light. Did you use a rotunda?
Would you care to show a wire of the whole setup?
Thx 3dan. Did i use what? Realy i dont know what is it.
I use JUST one rectangular ligtht (18x4.5m), you can clearly see its reflection in the car.
Ill post a wire as soon as i get home.
It is a rounded transition between ground and back wall to simulate infinite backdrop. Photo studios use it a lot.
I have just done one to render my model on and thought you were using it too.
Ah, so thats rotunda.:o Actualy i've used those, but not this time.
There is black background color and a infinite dark gray groundplane. There is no sky light and area light fades away. So it just seems like that.
I saw a light. This is how it looks in reality.
3Dan this is the wire of that scene (minus the interior). There's nothing else to see, except the car.
hey, quit posting pics of a real car.. j/k :)
that model looks absolutely real. nice clean mesh too. it's works like this that inspire us all to do better.
04-11-2003, 07:11 PM
 great detail
nice wireframe too :D
04-11-2003, 10:31 PM
The 300 SL is absolutely one of the classiest Mercedes made and you have built an absolutely classy model of it. Kudos! If/when you get some time could you crit my WIP, a Ferrari 206 GT Dino? It is my first time to model a car and I could use all the help I can get. Thanks and keep up the awesome work!
10-11-2003, 08:19 AM
Really nice car you have there. I hope you'll explain me how you made the material for the chrome parts.
I made different tutorials for chrome materials but i didn't suceed :( Hope you can help me
Actualy making chrome has nothing to do with material (ok maybe it does, a little).:D All you have to do is create nice environment (HDR maps or light and dark objects in the scene). It took me 'just' 2 yrs to figure that out. For mat i used dark grey or grey raytrace material with 60 to 80% reflections (no fallof maps or anything)
I love this car. Can you make a Render with her doors open??
10-11-2003, 07:59 PM
WOW very VERY nice work! GReat lookin car especially since you didn't have blueprints...you rock!
cheers and keep up the good work!
I made some changes on the body, again. Every time i think there is no more work there i find some new references that make me change something.:grr:
Now i even found blueprints and i don't know if comparing them with model would be smart. (blueprints - http://www.vsrnonline.com/VSRN_Main.html ) There are a lot of blueprints of old cars and all of them can be put to good use, some of them have even crosssections. Most of those cars are old prototypes and are not well known.
Anyway this is render of the last version of my merc.
19-02-2004, 11:40 PM
wow amazing work man!
i have 0 crits, i bow down to you an hope 2 b that good someday :)
heh cheers and congrats on an amazing model, do an openroad shot/movie someday :D
I'm not too sure about the movie. My poor old 750MHz AMD has trouble with the still shots as it is. But there certainly will be some stills with the doors(wings) spread. It is just a few days of work to complete the interior (and redo some things that are wrong) but i just have thigs to do and can't get few days in a row, free.
But one day...
20-02-2004, 04:54 AM
Excelent work there Raf.
Really nice renders. Love the lighting
Holy crap! Are you for real?? That's amazing work! Amazing modelling, shading and rendering! 10 stars out of 5 possible.
Hey there:) .
I was away for a "little" while. Recently i started redoing this project. This time with blueprints.
this is before
And all that work is hardly visible on the render, but it makes me hapy that it's more accurate:D
this is the interior. It also required quiet a few invisible changes.
Anyway ,dashboard is finished. Maybe i finish this after all.:p
20-09-2004, 05:59 PM
I thought this car was great before and could'nt be much better. Man, was I wrong. I am sorry Raf but I must disagree the changes you have made are very visible. So I would say all your hard work was well worth it. Awesome.
20-09-2004, 10:13 PM

I have a little problem here.
Does anyone know how to make coloured plastic look good, im not happy with my blinkers.
And also reflection of the front grilll is brighter than the grill itself, and i dont know why is that.
22-09-2004, 11:17 AM
God ,is this your second car?
I wanna kill myself!
Yes, it is my second car in max, but you may check date on the first post in this thread. It is more than a year old.
I started modeling with CAD called SolidWorks (had to know it for my college). First thing i ever did in max was a helicopter (bell 212), than a few little models and a car for design competition (Not very good).
I didn't know nearly as much about modeling at the begining of this thread.
P.S. does anyone have answers on my previous question?
Been experimenting with standard materials. I need some aluminium like metal and this is what came out. Does it look like metal or plastic.
23-09-2004, 02:06 AM
I would say aluminium.:)
23-09-2004, 02:54 AM
whoaa...cant wink of my eye see d model *the car :D :D ....this is very good, teach me bro:D
bro kujoe we met again lol:D you reside in above me bro:) .seek another refrence 4 my model again.
Finaly got those doors to open. More renderings coming soon.
and here is a look at the dashboard. It has a few stupid mistakes that can be fixed in a few minutes (like wrong material on the indicator lights) but i didnt feel like waiting another three hours for rendering.
08-10-2004, 11:01 PM
thats very very very tight....!!!!!
great work obviously,lovethe details as well :D :) :) :D
hei dude..this car is true ??? my god!!
09-10-2004, 04:20 PM
wow this model never ceases to amaze me :D.. why is it taking so long to render? you dont have hdri do you?
09-10-2004, 04:23 PM
omg thats amazing! incredable! WOW!
THX all :D
jawahar: Yes i too love the details, seen your automation system, and phones. Like it, lots of details :D
xtreme: Nice image editing i like it. There will be some 1280*960 wallpapers soon i guess. But there is always something to fix something with the model. I dont know about sharing the model, maybe some parts of the mesh but not all. It was not intended for sale also. If anybody wishes to see some particular part of the model rendered or wire just let me know.
blackwolf: i dont have hdri. There is very, very, very big area light which i tried to replace with 90 spotlights and shadowmaps. When i got results that were satisfying, rendering times got seriously close to those with area light, and shadows still werent quiet right. The area light didnt give good specularity so i turned that spotlights to just show specularity. I guess that was too much for my 750 MHz Duron, but rendering from outside 800*600 picture without specularity can be finished in just under 30 minutes.
If someone has some crits say it, i want to know if something looks weird.
This is picture of leather with some specularity.

Wow, I am extremely impressed, Abs. gorgeous renders. And fanastic modeling.
A couple of questions if thats ok ..
1 , did you take any steps to make sure the chrome looked right inside the car. ?
Normally i have a job to get the reflections working correctly inside the cars.
2. the area light. how did you make it visible? as a big rectangle.
thanks a lot.

just amazing work, the surface has a lot of volume and is very convincing.keep up the great work.cheers
Awesome level of detail.
I guess your model is pretty hefty in terms of polycount by now.
I always save my work with the 'Save Selected" option, selecting, say, the bodyshell, then the set of tires, then the dashboard and so on. I anything happens to the model, like a crash (God forbids burt s**t happens), there will be the separate objects safely saved in individual files. Of course you can save each complete instrument, or the dash as a whole. But make sure you have the complete model split up into parts´ files. You´ll know precisely what object caused the crash as you merge each into the main file. It´s not as tiresome as it may seem. In the end i save all into a cd. Besides the single big model file of course.
Can´t wait to see your next model - when you are fullydone with htis one. Because i trust you´ll do another, sooner or later.

WOW! i bow down to you... thats so amazing...
cgstripe: chrome parts inside have the same materialss aplied as outside. I made two chrome mats (one is less reflective) and aplied them where it seemed proper. Didn't have trouble with that. And area light is matched to the white plane (RGB output 2.5), same in size, with 100 self-illumination.
3Dan: Yes i am. Beginning to think that it's some sort of mental condition, can't stop. Just keep doing smaller and smaller details. Now it is about 600 000 faces. That's why i don't have more than one model to show of.
Soon i'll have to do a team project for my school, a conceptual design of airplane. So next model will be plane :D
Funny thing you mention this about saving. I have a few files of the complete car, two just with model and one for each scene. And it was doing fine for a while. Then i wanted to try how fast can athlon64 render and took my files to another town. Instead of copying files to a flashdisk i cut/pasted them. When i came home they werent on my computer any more (to my big surprise:eek: ). A few other unexpected things were going on so i was able to retrive them after more than a week.
I played with scene setups. Much simpler lighting. It's refreshing to have 20 minute renders
This is same setup from opposite angle. Sun is set very low (about 15 degrees) and it wipes out diffuse shadow from under the car so it look afloat, but i can asure you, it is on the ground.

Nice work m8
Here i go again. And no, the car is not finished yet.
A while ago i installed Max again so i felt a need to at least finish the outside. Had to reacquaint myself with the model again. Tire texture is done (... ok maybe it needs some twaking).
Also, soon, it will be 2 years since the begining of this thread so, to celebrate it, i'll listen to xtreme an post a max file of merc. It will be earlier version without all the details and materials, but it's something :)
I'll post it sometimes today, just have to host it somewhere.

wow - 1st time iv seen this - it looks real - great work - 5 stars

amazing...lot of detail...love it,bulging my eye... 5 * from me
And here is the link to older version of my model (max file).
On this one shape is inacurate (difference between new and this one is shown on page 9 of this thread). Also interior is not finished and materials are not included. More or less everything about the materials has been said on previous pages. Other than that meshes were changed slightly, usualy just by moving vertices.
Hope this file will be useful to those who want to see some new or old methods of controling mesh smooth modifier. :)
Two final wallpaper size renders (1280x960).
More coming soon.

That is absolutely beautiful sir. You asked for crits a page ago, but I cannot for the life of me see ANYTHING wrong or out of place.
I went and downloaded the old model, rather hoping it will help me improve my own models.
Looks like it is finished. That was rather quick wasn't it :D

Looks great but for some reason your wip renders and individual zooms/camera tweaks look a whole lot better and more realistic than the last big render. Maybe its just the lighting in the last one, because the reflections on the grey car are very bright and it looks fake.
Amazing progress though.
Sharky: yes this render looks little differen, but the lighting setup is the same. Maybe it is because light is concentrated on small area and it doesn't illuminate those two cars enough while reflections remain the same. Will try to do something about it.

Excellent! No other word for this! Great job! 5 stars!

Hey Raf, beautiful job there :), is that a speaker in the door jam?
oh my god, ...wow......hm......perfect.........nice.......... .yes yes.......wuuuoooouw....
the interior is sexy... i love it
13-03-2006, 08:21 AM
my god it's an amazing model !!!!
Blackwolf: Yeah, it is. At first I was't sure, when looking at reference photos, what it is because on every car it looked different. In some cases it looks like it is all metal and on others there is canvas cover with wooden frame.
Almost every paticular gullwing has some differences. This interior setup is taken from a single car (there were good ref photos of it).
