View Full Version : Week #2 - Church Gateway - Low Poly
Tom-3DT
19-05-2010, 01:58 PM
Hi everyone, I photographed this little gateway near Stratford Upon Avon the other day, maybe Shakespeare walked through it once, who knows...
The limits for this week are 2,000 tris and 1024 texture sheet - any textures are cool, normals, specs etc to make it look as near to the photo as possible! As this is how they will be judged
Here is the photo set (http://freetextures.3dtotal.com/index.php?iset=1448&pp=)
Please post your wire, clay, texture sheets and final render in this thread, wip and on topic chat is also fine here too, these challenges are supposed to be fun and we are not too strict on the rules. The only prizes are a gold, silver and bronze award handed out to both high and low poly versions each week. http://forums.3dtotal.com/picture.php?albumid=1291&pictureid=10526http://forums.3dtotal.com/picture.php?albumid=1291&pictureid=10525http://forums.3dtotal.com/picture.php?albumid=1291&pictureid=10524
Deadlines will be as always Midday GMT next wednesday

Only the Church gateway or also the surrounding area (Bushes, container, house in the back, etc.)? I'll give it a shot :)

The very best of luck to all who enter, it's doubtful i'll be entering as although i'm ok with the modelling aspect of things....getting this to look anywhere near the real thing texture wise I fail completely, i've always struggled with texturing.....and could do without the headache of UV mapping or learning it at the moment lol. The last challenge had some perfect entries, i'm sure this will too! :)

just curious, but am i suppose to just start a new thread here to build my wip like the other challenges, or is there somewhere else I'm suppose to post this.

Tri's = polys? Or are tri's something else?
behemoth
19-05-2010, 08:37 PM
Nope. A model's general size is weighted polys and tri's. Its fair to say that if you have a 10,000 poly model, that is a 5000 tri model. Just in whatever app you are using turn on the scene displays and there should be polygon count and tri count there for you.

Tri's = polys? Or are tri's something else?
Please someone else correct me if Im wrong it's been a few years since I was a 3d artist but a tri has 3 points and a poly can have many (3 or more), so you could say the limit for this is 2000 tris, or 2000 polys as long as they have 3 points.
just curious, but am i suppose to just start a new thread here to build my wip like the other challenges, or is there somewhere else I'm suppose to post this.
everything in this thread please

Ahhh lol my mistake, I was thinking quad modeling in relation to tri modeling. :D Yeh my bad, polys can be any level of points. At least I'm thinking like a clean modeler lol.
Tom-3DT - Thanks muchly! So we basically just finish a complete WIP and post everything here. Sounds good! :)

Hey, first post here, I was going to wait until I was finished the model for this challenge but i just wanted to jump in here. Your 3D software should break the geometry down into Tris no matter how many points the polygon is. So no matter what, your model will be more tris then polys, since it takes two tris to make a 4 sided poly. I didn't know this for ages and it lead to some bad habits being developed.
Also, I'm using Max, and if you right click when your object is selected you can untick "edges only" and see how Max is re-interpreting your model into tris.
Combine this with setting your viewport statistics (7) to viewing tris aswell as polys and you'll have better control over your model's triangle budget.
I say all this, but I have a feeling my model is a bit rubbish in this regard, I'll post a WIP soon.
Edit Didn't realise there was a set of photos will have to restart mine. I was thinking the competition was to see what you could come up with working off one photo. Ah well :D

Threw together a super low poly model.
30 tris.
1024 x 1024 Diffuse and opacity maps only.

Damnit, I focussed on Polys, had about 1300 of them but that's only have the amount of tri's I have. Guess I've got to start over. Ah well, that's part of the challenge :)
Edit: Just above 1.600 tri's right now. Yay ^^

30 tri's holy crap! I don't think I can beat that, lol
I'll try to enter this one since I didn't finish the previous comp in time. Though I think it'll be hard since I am going to two barbeque parties this weekend, I will probably be knocked out for the whole week after that xP

I know the comp's about accurately depicting the object and not about seeing how low poly you could make it, I just had a lot of fun with it.

Note about the textures. On the actual model itself the texture sheet has a dark grey wood textured background to deal with any UV spillage. But it made telling the difference between the bump and the diffuse fairly impossible. So I put this one up here to make it handier.

Okay so here is my entry to the photo-modelling competition. Deadlines my work have really put me behind on this one but I managed to kinda get something done over the past 3 nights. I've only managed to spend a total of 6 hours on this project and it certainly shows in comparison to the other entries (which are awesome!).
Needless to say, this was just all in fun so I'm not too mentally damaged by this one lol. The following images are of the basic components of the model. I used basic poly modelling methods to complete the finished model which stayed under 2000 tris. I'm not much for low poly modelling but this was luckily a pretty basic structure to configure. Comments are always great! Thanks and good luck to all that competed.

Okay so here are the final images for my submission. I have included my color and bump map used to compose the final image. I found the texturing process to be quite brief but I really didn't put as much effort as I wanted into it given the amount of time I had this past week. I used a quick 3 point lighting array in combo with an HDR image to put together the final composition. Enjoy!

hi guys my first post on the forum
spotted this & just had to give it a go.
Welcome to the Forum and nice work with your entry.
Just some friendly advice, instead of having the same material multiple times in your 1024x1024 map you can use them just the once to map both sides. This also allows you to utilise more of the map space and allow a higher resolution which is a must in getting the most out of any Low Poly model.
