Don't forget only 2 days left until the Movie Mashup Challenge Deadline. Closing date - 15th July 2010
June / July - Movie Mashup Challenge
Deadline - 15th July 2010 - GMT 23:59:59 (the last second!)
This time we are returning to the unified challenge again with all 5 streams coming into 1 to give the moderators and organizers a bit of a breather, and also to mix things up a bit and as always, to have fun. You are required to make an image in either 3d or 2d or a mix combining elements from 2 of your favourites feature films - hense: "Movie Mashup"
Your final image can be of an actual scene from the movie or just a character or an object or a mix but the subjects must all be from 1 movie and the style must from another. Confused!? Well there are some examples below:
The requirements are very simple, make a final rendered image in any digital medium under the title of 'Movie Mashup'. We want a final render of upto 1280 on either axis in either 2d, 3d or a mix. You can incorporate photos as long as you make it clear where they are used (see next point)
At least 1 additional image must also be submitted showing the workings of your image, for example, a wire frame, steps of a 2d painting, or the photos of a matte painting. You must try to make it clear to the judges how your image was created, but it is up to you exactly what you submit.
Please make your own wip thread in this forum and use the naming convention "Movie Mashup - YOUR IMAGE TITLE - YOUR FORUM NAME"
A few more rules
1. All work must be your own original designs.
2. All work must be completed for this project along, pre-made work not allowed.
3. Individual entries only, no team-work
4. All entries must be submitted to the final entries thread by Midnight GMT on the 15th July 2010
5. Judging - An initial round by the 3DTotal staff and moderators will select the best 10. A second round will then involve each judge looking at each image and scoring and commenting. All comments and scores will be added together into the final winners article published on 1st August
Some Ideas to get you thinking
A scene from the 'matrix' in the sytle of pixars 'up'
The 'back to the future delorean car' in the style of 'city of the lost children' (steampunk)
The wooden horse from 'Troy' in the style of 'Star Wars'
'Lord of the Rings character' in the style of 'Saving Private Ryan'
Other suggestions include:
Snatch Meets Dawn Of The Dead
Gone In 60 Seconds (Eleanor Car) Meets Blade Runner
The Lion King Meets Underworld
James Bond Meets Monsters Inc
Romancing The Stone Meets Shrek
The Wizzard Of Oz Meets Minority Report
Who Framed Roger Rabbit Meets I Robot
The Rock's Alacatraz Meets The Beatles Yellow Submarine
Harry Potter Meets Tron
The possibilities for this one are only limited by your own imagination, talent and creativity
All we ask is that your image fits under the title of 'Movie Mashup'

the biggest and most important part is definitely going to be an IDEA. enough time to really get to the small details, but i'm stuck at what to do, which way to go...

I got one question now: can we use video game characters too for this challenge ?

i think the title says it realy clear. MOVIE MASH UP. but theres movies that have games made after them and visa versa. :)
matt_3dtotal
04-06-2010, 10:23 AM
It's important that you focus on the movie theme as this is something the judges will take into consideration but I guess you could use a video game character if that particular video game has been made into a movie.

1 question tho,
1) i mostly do modeling/texturing (weak in lighthing and CC areas) does an entry like *sculpting challange* Zburhs Sshots count as in valid entry

You are allowed to sculpt in this challenge, all is fair game so you can model, sculpt, paint, matte, composite all into one image :)

If I took one movie, and portrayed it in the style of a director, does that count? Or do I choose a movie by the particular director?
I only ask because "BTTF by Pixar" is sort of a similar way I was thinking of going. Not BTTF or Pixar, just a movie by a different director/art style.
ClassicGamer-3DT
04-06-2010, 01:10 PM
You don't really need to think about the director. Just take one film and portray it in the style of another. The further the differences in genre's between the two the better, for instance if you did a steampunk'd harry potter it'd be a little too similar style's but if you did Harry Potter in the style of Star wars or the matrix it would be real interesting.
The choice is up to you, you've got a history of filmmaking going back to the 1900's (ish) so there's enough to choose from :)
Kind Regards

We have high hopes for this theme, the scope (and fun) are pretty much endless, so much that we may make it our big summer annual challenge, with the same topic each year but bigger with more prizes, anyway getting ahead of myself again. Good luck to all!

04-06-2010, 07:49 PM
The topic seems like it may be a little confusing for some, so let me ask a few questions to clarify. I've seen a few people that are thinking of doing characters from one movie, depicted in a scene that took place in another movie.
As I read the brief it sounded as though the idea was to show a scene from one movie in the style of another movie... so the scene would be that same but the camera angle, mood, lighting, etc. would be different?
Or is the topic open enough that you would be free to combine characters, sets, etc from the 2 different movies?
ClassicGamer-3DT
04-06-2010, 07:50 PM
Everything is fair game, so you can do a scene, a set, a character or all together :)

Everyday i check 3dtotal Forum and found no new contest.
This one is really kick ass theme.
I wanna join this comp. But, i got a question. Is Final Fantasy Advent Children a movie?
I wanna chose Cloud/Sephiroth to put into other film style.
Thanks before for the answer :)

WhiteGuardian - I'm going out on a limb here but that is most definitely a movie (and a kick arse one at that) so I wouldn't think there'd be any problems using it. I'm sure the 3DTotal crew will come back and confirm.
This is a great theme and I'm in like flynn!!!
Thinking Akira x Aliens or Army of Darkness x Seven Samurai.....
Possiblities are endless!!!

ok, maybe i´m too stupid for that, but i still dont really get it.
lets say - if i model bugs bunny in the terminator 2 movieposter pose on a bike, with leather clotehs on - is this a movie mashup?
or do i have to take a character as he is, and place him in the environment of another movie.
or lets say - i want the lost cast in the environment of nightmare before christmas - do i have to model the lost cast as real people and use the nbc environment - or do the characters have to be in a burton-ish look as if they were stop-motion figures?
how much can you stilize, and adopt the other theme. its a little bit confusing to me.

BiG ToE-3DT

I don't see why not. The idea of this theme is to take more than one movie and combine them. So doing, lets say 3, would only make it more of a challenge for yourself. If your up to it, go for it.
You may also need to explain your work.

Question!!!!
Can Documentaries, short films, short animations, musicals, etc be used? I believe if it can be nominated for an Academy Award it is good enough to be used in this competition regardless if its "The Matrix" or Pixar's short film "Presto" or any other animation short and any short film, foreign or domestic. I hope ideas like this will not be eliminated as well... Or do we just have to go with main stream big production, wasting 90 min plus of film time type movie?
Thnx for the help :)

Alright well i have decided to go with "Wakko's Wish (The only ever released Animaniac's movie) and The Professional. I hope these 2 can work out together
I would have a question:
Does it have to be "favourite" movie, or can it be any movie? I like mixing unmixable... so I want to mix a chick flick with a war drama. (one of those chick flicks where you cant even cling to the hope of seeing 5 minutes of digital effects of a sinking ship or totally inaccurate attack on a US naval base).

Is this where I get the attention of Tom3DT? I have include a link to my thread below. Some people who have commented on my thread have suggested I may have done something against the rules. To get proportion correct I have traced a few basic shapes from exhisting images. I have not traced the whole image, all of the details were done freehand. I am new to digital painting so I am not sure if this is allowed in the digital painting world. I usually do traditional work and have projected an image on to a canvas before and thought of it as a similar thing. all of the details were put in free hand, and the coloring was done again free hand from the references. It's not very original but I thought I would have a go anyway.

If it is against the rules I would understand, I am pretty sure I won't win anything anyway, and I am not even sure that I am going to have time to finish it due to other commitments. But what happened to the mattes then??? But I understand if you trace large areas an then post it as a digital painting (going to look at the thread now..)
Edit: Okay I think Inveni0 said something good about this...
If you want to do a matte painting, do a matte painting. See, the definition of a matte painting is that you're using mattes of other images.
If you're doing a digital painting, though, you need to actually do a digital painting. You can't "trace to get proportions right". That's cheating. There are people on here that work hard to be able to freehand proportions and to come in and trace something is cheating them out of their hard work.
Just get honest, man. Anybody can trace something. This competition is for artists.
And judging from the pics (including the refs and such) it is looking a bit much like tracing... But it can always be redone right?? ;)

there will be a final entry thread located in the same section of the forum as your w.i.p thread. This final entry thread will be where all final entries will be uploaded.
Do not make your own final entry thread.

Regarding the final entry thread - do I have to upload the image to the 3Dtotal site via attachements or can I link to external site?

No That's fine, hopefully in about 7-10 days, but we are really bogged down with projects at the moment (the projects that actually pay the bills lol)

don't worry about it, I was joking when I said, start right on time. The idea is, when it starts, that will be the right time for it.
Just make sure you enter. Or I will look for you, I will find you, I will steal your computer.

yeah, I thought we were going to squeeze one in, but things didn't work out that way. If the Dom War starts on time, then it's only about 2 weeks away.

That's a fine initiative. As a newbie I like it very much. The prizing is also worth appreciating.

That's quite obvious. There has to be movie mash ups since there are so much projects running. You have to be ready for that.
