OK well it's been far too long since I did any real modelling. And I just couldn't resist this challenge so i'm going all out for this one.

The film i've chosen is Back To The Future Part II, it is by far one of my alltime favourite films and indeed trilogy's ever! The twist is i'm making it a Pixar/3D cartoon version.

What if Pixar did Back To The Future? well this is hopefully what i'll try to create.

I'm also hoping to create the following:

Cafe 80's Exterior
Cafe 80's Interior (but only viewable from the outside)
Marty McFly Character
Mattel Hoverboard
DeLorean DMC 12 parked outside the Cafe 80's
& a few surrounding buildings and video wall with Goldey Wilson III on etc.

The plan is to have the DeLorean, Cafe 80's in the background and Marty McFly flying off the hoverboard lol.

As always I will be modelling within Cinema 4D 11.5 using Advanced Render 3 for my renders, they'll be a little (but not much) post done in Adobe Photoshop for colour corrections and compositing etc. Texturing will be a mix of shaders, CGtextures.com and 3Dtotal texture CD's.

Reference pictures are from my Trilogy DVD boxset, strangely there's not a great deal of closeups or long shots on the buildings, but there's quite a few details that are the same from the 1955 Lou's Cafe aswell which i've captured to help with detailing.

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk208/classicgamer-3dt/ClassicGamer-2DReferencePicturesShe.jpg

The sketch in this references sheet is not mine it's from deviantart by a much more talented artist going by the name of scoundreldaze.

Here's my awful concept sketch......as you can tell it's been some time since I sketched!

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk208/classicgamer-3dt/ClassicGamer-2DScannedConceptSketch.jpg

I hope to update this thread later on today with something blocked out or modelled. Not quite sure what to start yet, the set, the car or the character :wall: I hope I can deliver

Kind Regards

CG.

Oh wow cool idea! Loving the title you've created, I like how you;ve matched the Pixar logo with the same style as the BTTF one :) I'm looking forward to seeing the Pixar style adopted to BBTF :)

Cool.

I suggest you stylize your Pixar McFly a bit more though.

Cheers guys, DD I thought about trying to make my Marty look like Michael J Fox so a little Pixar....a little caricature..... a little cartoon 3D style....we'll see. But i've no idea really as my success with organics/characters hasn't been great...but this is what these challnges are all about, testing your might as it were and trying new things. I've already built a Hoverboard before as a test, I will be starting from scratch all over again :)

Righto, here's what i've got so far, thought I'd start with what i'm most comfortable with first which is buildings, so here's my start on the Cafe 80's. Fairly happy with the start of this so far, hope to update more later today or tommorow.

Looking really good so far.

One issue I could see coming up with the judges; the challenge is 'Movie Mashup' - to match up two movies. Back to the Future is one movie, but Pixar isn't a movie.

Pixar has made many movies and each has a little different style than the next. I think for this to work, you'd need to choose one Pixar movie and base your character and scene style on that particular movie.

I've made a quick sheet of Pixar humans from different movies; you can see that there are some similarities between characters, but there are many different styles.

ClassicGamer-3DT
04-06-2010, 03:13 PM
Good point, the style i'm going for is Disney Pixar's Up style, the style isn't all that cartoony with exception to the characters, it's basically going to be slightly realistic modelling but shaded and textured in a 3D cartoony style similar to that of Up.

In other words I won't be having over the top stylisations, the building will look similar to that in the reference images but brighter and more colourful if you get my meaning :) If you take the old's guy's house in Up it looks like a real house but it's textured and coloured in a vibrant style.

Up To The Future...

Quite a poignant title really, as everything thing is decided by the future.

Back To The Up... Sounds like an Eminem album title, skip it :)

Cool idea and you're already modelling! I wonder how you'll model the characters from Back to future with the Pixar style.

Only gonna model Marty McFly, but yeah it's got me wondering if I can pull it off. Hopefully I will.

Righto, here's the glass & green check building with video wall progress :)

The video in the film has Goldie Wilson III Hover car conversions, I will have a cartoon version of myself composited onto the background and placed on the video screen.

more to come soon......i'm trying to put off the character modelling as long as possible :) But i've made a start on the DeLorean too. I will be modelling the DeLorean high poly to get all the right shapes etc. It'll be stylised, chunky and squashed up :) The apparatus at the rear won't be alot though because you'll only really see the front and side of the car at the camera angle i've got.

Dann-O
05-06-2010, 05:36 PM
Nice work on the building want to see your DeLorean. Buildings are my weak area.

ClassicGamer-3DT
05-06-2010, 05:53 PM
OK then, here's the DeLorean as mentioned..... fairly high poly but it won't be mesh smoothed so it's looking ok to me. There's some issues with the smoothness of the bodywork so far but most flaws won't be that visible from the distance it'll be from the camera.

ClassicGamer-3DT

Yes exactly! his version of the DeLorean was one of THE best i've ever seen :)

ClassicGamer-3DT
05-06-2010, 05:58 PM
The beauty of having so many different elements in this is that when I get frustrated or bored with one section I can move onto the other. For instance after several hours this afternoon playing with the DeLorean and the Video wall building, i'll probably make a start on the Hoverboard soon as i've already built that before and starting from scratch won't be too hard......once you've built something before you can learn from any mistakes you made the first, second or third time around etc :)

hulahuga
05-06-2010, 06:31 PM
Apart from the delorean are the concepts all yours for the combo?? :O

ClassicGamer-3DT
05-06-2010, 06:32 PM
What do you mean apart from the DeLorean?

Everything is going to be combined together to make one big scene.

EDIT: I get what you mean, is everything i've thought of my own idea's? Yes the DeLorean is based off the strongtank style, but was always gonna be that way to be inkeeping with the Pixard Up theme :)

hulahuga
05-06-2010, 06:40 PM
I haven't checked out Stroggtank's take yet, but you and DD said it was a bit similar or at least based on it...

ClassicGamer-3DT

Not really as my sketching ability is not the best at all sadly. But I have created this video wall image which is my likeness depicted as Goldie Wilson III :)

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk208/classicgamer-3dt/ClassicGamer-2DClassicgamerVideo-1.jpg

I created this in photoshop, it took me about an hour..... as you can tell I don't draw digitally or traditionally alot, in fact it's been a long long time since i've done this kinda thing, but as it's not going to be that big I think it look ok :)

ClassicGamer-3DT
06-06-2010, 06:51 PM
Not had alot of time today to create alot so finally made a small start on Marty McFly and trying out some test textures on the hoverboard, still need to add the furry foot holder and foot disc on the Mattel logo side of the board and might have to redo some of the circular elements as they look a little too sharp, the hoverboard won't be very close up but I still wanna get it pretty good.

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk208/classicgamer-3dt/ClassicGamer-3DHoverboardTestTextur.jpg

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk208/classicgamer-3dt/ClassicGamer-3DHoverboardTestTex-1.jpg

Marty is taking shape quite well, but is a REAL challenge for me, especially when it comes to his jacket which has all manner of different bits and bobs on it, and also the "power laces" nike trainers will be interesting too lol.

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk208/classicgamer-3dt/ClassicGamer-3DMartyMcFlyComposi-2.jpg

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk208/classicgamer-3dt/ClassicGamer-3DMartyMcFlyComposite0.jpg

So far this is around 3-4 hours of work on Marty so it's a pretty slow progress with him :hmm: I'm delibertaly posing him as I go as I've never learn't rigging properly :( Marty all being well should be appearing to look slightly shocked as he's fallen on the hoverboard, whilst the hoverboard will be in the air somewhere behind him :)

Updates will come tommorow sometime, dependant on work etc. Most likely updates will be in the form on the DeLorean.

paulius-st
06-06-2010, 08:31 PM
nice fast updates. nice texturing and a nice character. and you said you dont model organics well :) . but for now marty mcfly looks more like a bald bart simpson :) .

ClassicGamer-3DT
06-06-2010, 08:39 PM
Yeah I know lol, the hair will be interesting, i'm hoping to have a nice parting and then a few flicks at the front and that should do for the hair, i'll be using the brush tool in Cinema 4D which is kind like sculpting.... (a little) it just makes organic object a little bit easier to control. I'm currently going through eyes stages at the moment trying to get something similar to Pixar's style, a few more tweaks in photoshop and I think i'll be ok with those.

The DeLorean is coming along nicely, i'm starting on the front and rear lights and the seats at the moment, alot of copying and shaping :)

Progress isn't that fast really, the total hours on the project at the moment in over 12.

ClassicGamer-3DT

I've tried Mudbox and Zbrush a few times but only for small things that would be harder to do in Cinema 4D. I'm not a great digital painter or matte painter, I really really suck at texturing especially UV mapping and unwrapping, in fact the last time I used Mudbox was for a paper sweets bag adding crinkles and such to it and that was over 2 years ago if I remember correctly :)

DeLorean updates will be here very soon, but i'm feeling rather ill at the moment......hopefully it'll pass and i'll be back on track.

ClassicGamer-3DT
07-06-2010, 12:35 PM
I think Marty will look better when i've finished some more details like the hair and his teeth etc. I'm pretty sure it'll come together pretty nicely.

I'm not really very happy with the lighting in Hill Valley just yet, but i'll change it later once more elements have been added in.......it still might look good once everything else is in the scene. I'm using an area light set up in the right hand corner or the scene with a touch of orange/yellow added and area shadows enabled.

Still not feeling too well, but here's the DeLorean progress as promised earier.

Not sure when I finish the Delorean, whether to have one of the doors open to show a little bit of the interior. I'm not strictly going by the film, because the actual car parked outsite the Cafe 80's was Biff's Car, but i've no desire to build that, plus a little bit of creative license is ok I think :)

I'm dreading the rear section with the engine parts and Mr Fusion, there's so much to add in there lol.

I will update Marty later today/tonight....all dependant on how well i'm feeling.

I'm not looking forward to Thursday this week as i'm having a filling at the dentists so maybe i'm churned up a little about that, I hate the drill, it vibrates my entire head and sometimes hurts, so it's probably that. :( Ah well it's for the best.

His wrists seem a bit weird, the shading seems off there...
Other than that I think the hair looks great :). Jacket looks neat as well, the tiny "things/folds" on the top and sleeves turned out great.

OK here's where I am so far with the DeLorean, alot of the rear engine details are just made up a little as you won't even see the rear of the car anyway, I've not done Mr Fusion yet.

Went to the Doctor's this afternoon as i've been sufferring with anxiety attacks and feeling churned up, it seems i'm still not completely over my mother's death which was New Year's Day and i'm on Anti Depresents......only need to take them when I get really really stressed out or have panic attacks, of which I had this morning and yesterday, I hoping I won't need to be on them for that long.... I just wish I could stop getting so worried about everything :wall:

Anyway, back on topic here's the screens and renders

looking fab bro.
when you have all the car modeled, you could apply a taper distortion tool to it, to give that typical cartoon tapered look. Just a tiny amount. And that could work on the buildings and all objects too.

ClassicGamer-3DT
09-06-2010, 09:30 AM
Yeah I was thinking about something like that, maybe have the Cafe 80's curving over the top of the DeLorean parked outside and I could taper/warp the green building with the video wall a little bit too.

I'll try some deformers out later today and post the results :)

i'm sure about those added props, that attention to detail was illustrated on your pub. Just hoping the textures and render will compliment the modeling, at times they can really dim the geometry and elements.

Thank you Raul i'm a big fan of your game art your a great modeller too and an excellent texturer.

Which leads me onto my very own texture tests.

I've finally after many many year of avoiding it, atually tried to texture properly with Cinema 4D Bodypaint, i've actually unwrapped the texture and UV mapped it, and create the texture map in photoshop.

It's nothing spectacular, but for me it's a big step in the right direction, so here I present my very first Bodypaint texture test with a US Mailbox for the Hill Valley scene :)

Here's the ref pic

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk208/classicgamer-3dt/ClassicGamer-3DUSMailboxComposite01.jpg

I dirtied it up a little as I didn't want it to be completely clean.

I know it's not completely accurate but it's only going to be small on the left hand side and not a close up so it serves it's purpose.

......back to Marty again.......his trainer's are proving a real challenge :(

Been checking out my blu ray Pixar Up this morning to try and match the style, apart from characters and vehicles the building looks nearly normal just a little chunkier and exaggerated slightly so I think i'm on the right track there.

OK so DeLorean update then...... tried allsorts of deformers last night and this morning and they just weren't giving me the effect I wanted, I tried combining taper, bend and sperical deformers....the lot...so.....in the end I simply pushed and pulled poly's into the directions and shapes I wanted.

The modelled of the doors & the tires are finished and I like to see them tapered in a little instead of straight on if gives it more style. I think i'm getting much much closer to the Pixar style with this DeLorean now....i'm certainly pleased with the progress. Textures for the Delorean will start soon(ish i'm not going to have much mud or scuff marks on the car though. From my DVD trilogy the bodywork is largely a brushed metal kinda of chrome carpaint. Hi Classic Gamer,

I'm not too sure about the taper, I know what you're going for, it's essentially "Cars" but that works because the cars have faces. My advice would be to make the wheels bigger, and maybe a taper in another direction to make the wheels fatter.

Essentially try and exaggerate the shape of the de lorean.

The car is a wicked model by the way, I just think that the deformation you've added looks wrong, but if you like it then I can dig that :) Keep up the stellar work

ClassicGamer-3DT
10-06-2010, 02:04 PM
Hmmm yeah looking at the front it does looks a little bit too low down and I'll tweak it some more when I get into texturing if it doesn't look right then i'll maybe re-think the shape completely.

This is the comparison from the way the vehicles look in Pixar's Up which is the mix i'm going for between Up & BTTF :)

I actually agree a bit here... Some of the deformations look cool but in Up the cars are still drivable....

ClassicGamer-3DT
10-06-2010, 02:43 PM
Yeah, actually I agree, i'll soften the tapering i've done and possibly make the tires a little thicker and bigger.

Here's an update with Marty McFly.....namely his jacket. Textures aren't final as the black on the jacket has no bump maps yet and looks a little too light, need to be a shade darker I think. I think the non-uniform elements on the collar and the sleeves work well too, it add's a little bit more than everything just looking almost too perfect and uniform. I'm also aware of the main red check texture bleeding through the jacket in places too, that will be fixed also.

Yeah I need to see what I can do in bodypaint for the Jeans....to be honest all I really wanna add is the seam down the side and i'd be happy, because it's not working with flat/cubic/cylindrical mapping etc so gonna have to try and unwrap that.

The Prime

You could model the seam into the pants. By the looks of your low poly cage, you have an edge in the right place. It would be a simple task to add that.

ClassicGamer-3DT
14-06-2010, 11:37 AM
Nah had to go to the foot clinic this morning, then i'm back there again on Thursday, nothing too bad.

Back on topic, i've been looking into multipassing on Cinema 4D properly over the weekend and after playing I kinda understand it now, as long as I activate an object buffer in the multipass settings on the render settings aswell as an object buffer on the geometry I want to render, I can then get diffuse, specular, ambient occlusion, global illumination, reflection, refraction, etc and above all alpha's for my models which leads me to the reason i'm mentioning it.

By having everything multipassed I can have a number of scenes exactly the same, with the same camera settings, same lighting but most importantly I can have one file for the background....i.e Cafe 80's & Video Wall with pavement, roads etc. Another file with Marty and his hoverboard and another file for the DeLorean...why? Because as I discovered over the weekend when I placed everything modelled so far, my viewport nearly ground to a halt and rendering was nearly impossible.

By having this way, I can also add much more elements into the scene without worrying about how much geometry will be in the scene.

I'm working on some little elements right now and as mentioned earlier, hopefully an update of some sort will arrive :)

ClassicGamer-3DT
14-06-2010, 03:50 PM
OK so here we go with progression of Hill Valley, textures are not final, just messing around with different styles etc. I already know now that i've rendered it out I don't like the brickwork on the Cafe 80's, gonna use a nice toon red brick i've got in my 3DTotal Textures CD collection.

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk208/classicgamer-3dt/ClassicGamer-3DHillValleyUpdate14th.jpg

Still a huge amount of things to add:

Roofing to the Cafe 80's, Lampposts, rubbish collectors or bins, poles, wires maybe some more vehicles parked and some small elements on the Cafe 80's i've missed.

I've used a Pixar BG and removed the house with balloons as a nice reflection BG for the windows, works to a treat to me, but will still play around with the size and direction etc.

More updates later....hopefully.

Good! I really like all those small details. Maybe the Pepsi Perfect logo's need to be a bit less bright or they need to illuminate a more of those dark spots they're in.

OK well here's a small update on one prop that will feature in the final scene. Strictly speaking the Biffco wasn't established until later on when Old Biff stole the DeLorean, went back in time to 1955 with the Sports Almanac and gave it to his younger self, then Biff of course cheated and became the luckiest guy in the world....And creating an alternative 1985 etc.

BUT......

That's what artistic licence is for...plus I just liked having the Biffco logo featured in the scene so without further ado....

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk208/classicgamer-3dt/ClassicGamer-3DBiffcoBoxProp01.jpg

Might dirty it up some when I place it in the scene, but for now here's a clean box open, will make some closed boxes......any suggestions on what would be in the boxes left out in the street? Whatever I fill the box with will need to be low poly ish and i'll use a MoGraph cloner with rigid body dynamics to fill the box naturally and that bit easier too I might add :)

Well i've been thinking about making Griff or not for some time, and after a few failed attempts i'm happy enough to share a head with him. Not sure if I'll keep him yet but got the skull cap modelled on him and I like the expression and he's angry of course. I might have one hand holding his belly and another holding his head, just after being pushed and attempted to have been hit by Marty inside the Cafe 80's.

I definatly won't be modelling Griff's mate's but he might look cool in the background.....it all depends on whether I can model the rest of him ok, gosh organics are so hard :wall:

I know there's a huge amount of edge loops on the character but I couldn't figure out how to get the expression around the mouth any other way and then I started getting some triangles and had to keep cutting to try and get all quads etc so forgive me but i'm still learning :hurt:

Yeah I know, any suggestions? I'm using C4D skin shader with a base colour, maybe some subtle bump mapping and skin freckles or something might help.

Worked on Griff's mouth some more, nearly ironed out all the pinches and gonna remove some of the edge loops around the lower lip area and should be much better, also tweak the eyebrows aswell :)

Mostly I'd say the gloss and the specularity needs some tweaking... You have a lot of polished metal in the scene, but right now it looks a bit flat...

it does look better at the distance he's at. I'll update soon with the scene as it stands at the moment. I've got 3 mutilpass sets so far, a background layer, then the video wall, cafe 80's and then character's layer and props layer.

OK well i've been struggling with the alpha channel with Cinema 4D for a while, but after looking at some things on the web about alpha's within photoshop i've got it looking slightly better. There's still some area's that need tweaking particularly the mailbox as i've accidently added it to the wrong layer and it's got a little white outline, but nevermind here's progress so far.

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk208/classicgamer-3dt/ClassicGamer-3DCafe80sInHillValleyC.jpg

As you can see Griff Tannen won't feature too largely in the final render he's just gonna be stood there holding his belly where Marty punched/kicked him and holding his head in anger where he fell on his friends inside the Cafe :) , the main focal point of this scene really is Marty.

Lots and lots more to add, roofing for the Cafe, cables, overhead wires, air con unit for the cafe (the space is ready for it on the upper left corner) I need to carry on with the DeLorean, i'm going to make a few more hovercar's one will be parked behind Marty on the opposite side of the Cafe 80's, another will be in mid flight somewhere. Gonna make a van/truck to have parked outside the video wall complex somewhere too. And...........oh so much more yet to do lol

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk208/classicgamer-3dt/ClassicGamer-3DCafe80sInHillValleyU.jpg

Some points/problems I need to address: I'm not a fan of the colour for the air con, Marty's eye had a piece missing I think that's a mapping issue, I moved Griff closer because I felt he was getting lost further back, still need to find a happy medium of where i'm placing the Pixar BG for the cafe reflections, still some fine anti aliasing white spots particularly on the pavement nearest the camera even though i'm using a layer mask, and added the multi coloured baseball cap flying off Marty's head too.

So much more to do yet!

Sorry that update's have slowed down a little but not really had the chance to add much more yet.

Here's a new version, trying a different BG plate for the Cafe's reflections this one includes the Up house too :)

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk208/classicgamer-3dt/ClassicGamer-3DCafe80sInHillVall-1.jpg

Added a small roof section to the Cafe aswell as changing the colouring of the Air Con Unit...... Still way too much to sort out, change, tweak etc, but thought i'd show the latest status. I'm still using the old multipass photoshop file, that's why Marty's eye is still mapping wrong and the hoverboard is still in the wrong place as i've not re-rendered Marty out again just yet.

Should be able to get moving with some more on this now i've recovered fully from my nice day trip to Skegness, you can see some of the photo's of the day amongst my new photodump thread i've created today her (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?p=800219#post800219)e :)

OK well i've been busy with this project again over the weeked. Tried to model Griff's hovercar, i'm not gonna go for accuracy as the car will be parked behind the DeLorean, i've started the car from scratch 6 times now, and here's where I am with it at the moment......also been struggling with the hover conversion section but i'll sort it even if it means having the make the smoothed geometry editable and go high res for it. There's some problems in the mesh but they'll be sorted once I switch the symmetry null on and smooth the bodywork, it's not looking to bad at the moment anyway. I've actually modelled much more of the car but haven't had chance to render out anything else than this yet.

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk208/classicgamer-3dt/ClassicGamer-3DGriffsCar01.jpg

Also based off the same way I modelled Marty, i've made a laughing boy character who will be pointing at Marty falling over on the right hand side.

i've been at the sea side for a week, nice progress CG - love the new character

one question - is the shadow of marty appearing on the road or not - without the shadow he seems kinda lost in perspective - i have trouble placing him. Perhaps with DOF it will change but a ground shadow could perhaps make a statement of his placement...

Spent half the afternoon modelling and the other half cleaning up the harddrive of old files and the like to try and speed up the system, it's been lagging something terrible lately and also had an out of memory error while trying to render out one the the multipasses but corrected it and got it rendered out eventually.

The rest of Griff's car was a breeze, I was in the modelling mood I think, I love those days when you're modelling goes well and you really enjoy what you're creating :) Still a few area's the clean up though.

The Hover Conversion Tech

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk208/classicgamer-3dt/ClassicGamer-3DGriffHovercarComp01.jpg

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk208/classicgamer-3dt/ClassicGamer-3DGriffHovercarComp04.jpg

Those grooves were used with boolean, but I wanted them to be inset properly so made the smoothed mesh editable and then joined the two together.

And Hill Valley Update

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk208/classicgamer-3dt/ClassicGamer-3DHillValleyUpdatedCom.jpg

Moved Marty to a different position whereby he actually has a shadow now, added a few nice Pixar objects and placed the laughing boy into the scene too.

The only things that are shouting out at me at the moment though are that either the laughing boy is too big or moving Marty over makes him look too small, either way I need to get the scale corrected.

Kind Regards

CG.

DaddyDoom
29-06-2010, 07:28 AM
The laughing boy looks like he's on his toes. Was that on purpose? Also, the colors on him look a bit too strong, and the eye sight instead of centering on Marty, which is the center of the scene, ends up moving towards the kid.
Now that the whole scene is getting closer to finished, we can start to perceive the balance of it a little more. Therefore, in order to fill in the dark area on the right, where the pepsi logos are, I would suggest you to move the deLorean to the sidewalk where the laughing boy is. The deLorean is a very important object in the scene, and right now, with all the add-ons you've been putting on the scene, it's getting a bit lost where it is. You could even place the two right weels over the sidewalk, or something.
Just a suggestion though, since all the rest is looking sweet.
Keep up bro.

ClassicGamer-3DT
29-06-2010, 09:05 AM
Cheers DD, the Laughing boy is mean't to be on his tip toe's, I looked at some poses and the excitement suggested to me the boy would look like that.

I'll tone down the boy's clothing too, I still think the boy needs to be smaller and Marty needs to be bigger.

I've been toying with the idea of having a van or another vehicle in the scene near the videowall section, but not sure, i'll try putting the DeLorean on that side, but at the moment Griff's Hovercar is parked behind the DeLorean and is in fact in the same place at the film.

Still so much to do!

ClassicGamer-3DT

Yeah I agree totally, the glass isn't reflecting properly and it does look a little too dark, I also want to change the tires direction on the DeLorean and the windscreen glass reflections there aswell. Marty's shadow works pretty well know I agree. I've also rebuilt the Cafe 80's slightly and added window blinds which aren't exactly showing up and also I can see the Cafe is floating slightly too.

And always still very much to do lol.

A little off topic I know but i've had to share this with you all because i'm so excited about it, not only it's easy to use but what i've managed to create on my first ever try with this software is extremely pleasing.

Now Sculptris has been mentioned on this site several times, and i've looked into the software, it's video's and gallery images and that was that, I thought nothing more about it but I actually downloaded it today and it's free and such a small program too about 3.1MB, and i'm just completly blown away by it's clean and easy to use GUI, it's speed and it's functionality.

I dove straight into it, learn't the shortkeys and the toolset in less than 20 mins and got crackin'............well i've tried Z Brush before and liked it, but hated the GUI, I've tried Mudbox before and liked it too and liked the ease of use aswell.....BUT and here's the simple truth...........i've never been able to create anything resembling anything in these softwares, now whether it's because I have a huge lack of anatomical knowledge i'm not really sure......but here's the thing........ i've created a face in less than 30 mins on this today! 30 mins and it's not half bad either, sure it's not gonna win any prizes for accuracy or prettyness BUT i've managed to create a face and i've NEVER managed to do this inside Z Brush Or Mudbox ever! Why?............... I'm not sure, but I think it comes down to the ease of use for this program, I started off with a simple sphere, used the grab tool to get a basic shape for the head, then started using the clay, crease, grab, smooth and pinch tool and hey presto! i've got something that actually looks like what I wanted to create!

I'm literally blown away by this software, I cannot rate it anymore highly, i'm just amazed that a complete novice like me managed to create this in 30 mins, i'm definately going to be playing with this alot more. It got me thinking I could make hair in this program, I can distort clothing and add little details etc. Then once i've figured out how to make the normals i've got all that high res geometry detail on my normal res model

Anyway here's what i'm talking about

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk208/classicgamer-3dt/FirstEverTryWithSculptris.jpg

I've always wanted to try this kind of thing properly and now I think with this software I feel that little bit more confident, then maybe after a few months of this I could really make something impressive that i'd be happy with :)

Just wanted to share because it made me so happy and i'm so so impressed by it.

Anyway it's very early in the morning and I'd better get to bed now.

Kind Regards

Which one is Marty? That flying little guy? I think the shadow is wrong... Marty casts shadow in a wrong direction... that's what i see... :D

Clear sunny day won't cast shadow that soft. The sun casts hard shadow while the sky will cast soft shadow a bit....so clear sunny day will create combination of hard shadow and soft shadow...

ClassicGamer-3DT
01-07-2010, 05:18 AM
Yeah still needs alot of tweaking, the shadows are area shadows so they get softer the further away from the light/sunlight they are, but yeah i'll get it sorted. I'm away for most of the day today, i've got foot clinic and then all being well i'm off to see Shrek Forver After yay!

Great work CG!.

I think the textures(specially talking about the buildings, could have more variation and some dirt, to avoid that plain look. I also think a little of motion blur on the skate and the cap would be interesting.

ClassicGamer-3DT
01-07-2010, 10:48 AM
Thanks matey, the textures aren't final for sure i've just been trying to get the scene in the right composition at the moment, this afternoon i'm gonna run through a few new lighting tests, particularly the lighting angle to see if any other angle suits the scene better, what i'll do is take the current sunlight and camera and place it into a new scene and do some tests, Marty needs to come out looking the best for this piece as he's the central character to the scene. I'll also look into some motion blur in post in photoshop, I don't want alot of blur but a touch might help that little bit.

Off topic - Foot clinic went well, my bad foot's (left) big toe nail was dangerously wobbley, was scared it was going to fall off, or worse I'd catch it and accidently rip it off.....turns out I had half of a new nail growing underneath lol so it's ok.

Didn't go to the Cinema, going to go this Saturday to see Shrek Forever After. But I have got Edge Of Darkness for watch on DVD and a crackin' load PC games 7 of them (one being a trilogy set) for £7 bargain!

They are quite old games, but i'm a retro gamer :)

Sorry for the lack of updates recently, but i've been struggling with getting renders out and multipasses, also been trying out new lighting aswell.

Just got back from the Cinema after watching Shrek Forever After.....not too bad either, better than Shrek the Third but not as good as Shrek or indeed Shrek 2, but there was plenty of laughs to be had.

Then on my way home with my sister i've just fell over, I lost my footing somewhere and feel down really hard, and crashed onto my right side lower rib cag, hurt like hell, and still hurts a little bit now but there's no brusing or anything, if the pain (which isn't too bad) hasn't gone by Wednesday or something i'll probably go to the Dr's just to make sure i've not cracked a rib or anything, but I felt so silly for falling over lol, I wen't down like a ton on bricks though lol. Right then, just to update you all, i'm off to the Doctor's in a while this afternoon to see about my ribs on my right hand side, they are quite painful when breathing in sharply, laughing and coughing really hurts, walking up the stairs and getting into/out of bed kills so there's something hurting, strangely there's no bruising at all but there's certainly pain, so the Doctor might give me some painkillers....there's not alot more they can do I think when it concerns ribs.

Also regarding my scene I have been trying out new lighting etc but not had the chance to render everything out just yet.

Hopefully updates will follow soon.

Just a waiting game now for my body to heal itself, trouble is I use my right side, arm, hand to draw, model etc lol........we'll see, if it get's too painful i'll take a painkiller and try to battle on......I tell you i'm a danger to myself.....who'd have thought a simple loss of footing and falling over could cause so much bother.....ah dear......onwards and upwards

OK so here's where the scene is right now, not really much of an update but this is a new test of a slightly different light setup. Multipasses are really really annoying me now, i've actually tried adding everything into one scene and it get's 15 seconds into the render and comes up with an out of memory error so I have to use multipasses to split the scene up. I'm not happy with the new lighting really it doesn't look as natural and even though Marty's shadow is correct it still dooesn't look right at all IMO.

It's looking slightly blown out and the intensity of the light seems too much
I'm gonna go back through some more light setups and maybe try soft shadows aswell as area and maybe even raytraced who knows.

I'm gonna get a sphere and a ground plane and try out new lights again because I don't feel I can move forward until I get the lighting and indeed the shadows looking their best. :wall:

Still so much to do yet.

Kind Regards

Thanks I can see where your going and what your trying to show, it's looking bad at the moment, i'll keep going, i've plenty of time left yet.

By the way just so you all know i'm not trying to win anything here.....i'm not sure if I can anyway being a mod, but I just liked the idea of this challenge so much I wanted to join in and I have been enjoying it.....which for me is what it's all about really :)

I could probably try to get something rendered out but for the time left would have to lost Griff's hovercar and/or possibly Griff too because I'll need to re-render out another 4 multipass renders and composite.......we'll see :(

i dont know how you used to set up a light system. in my opinion, use a sphere with i HDR Map to simulate a environment lighting is easier to put all the things together.

OK well i've managed to create this, and i'm calling this final, as i've not got the time or the ability to do anymore with this at the moment :wall:

There's a ton I wish I could have changed and added and fixed etc, but i've really really enjoyed creating this, and i'm glad I got to the end of it even if it wasn't how I wanted it to go.

The rest is on the final entries page.

Haha great twist with the ball and the lamp there :smug:.

Why did the car get that anti-alaising failure though?? You coudl have have painted that over or re-rendered the section...

Came out great in the end, good to see you pulled this through :)! Great fun watching.

It would definately suck... HEAR ME OUT:

There has YET, to be an AMERICAN-MADE 3d ('CGI' as some call it) - movie, where the characters actually look realistic. The Japanese dominated (for instance) with "Final Fantasy 12". Why cant WE make such an AWESOME-QUALITY 3D Movie???

- Hence the reason PIXAR (a kid's 3D movie company) definately should NOT be the company to attempt this feat.

Go with Industrial Light and Magic, or WETA. Those seem to be the only companies that could even come close.

few thoughts.. a).. love it..
B).. cant wait to see the doc in pixar mode
C).. why cant you just turn this around.. and make the first 3dt movie.. (am sure everyone on here would chip in on that one)..

i mean there are enough guys on here who concept.. there are tone of wicked character guys.. plenty of scene builders..
you know what i mean.. i'm normally an idea's kind of guy..

he he..... what this scene could have looked like if I was a better modeller and texture artist :) (ignore the bump values, they should have been decreased for the closer render)
