I'm planning to create an image of the Little Mermaid in the style of the Horror movie, Hellraiser. I made a quick poster to just get a feel for the clash of these styles.
I'm not sure of the process yet, but it'll probably mostly be 2D.
I plan to create a composition of most of the main characters as cenobites, or close stylized versions of them. Overall image will probably be dark and macabre.

Her lying on a rock luring them in.
Sharks waiting with a glow in their smiles.
Lurking behind a brooding cliff...

I can't wait to see how this one develops :D Most excellent idea!
Wicked theme. I hope you will make cenobites proud... or your suffering will be legendary even in Hell

Started a quick sketch, not sure if it's the route I'll end up taking.
I started making a larger scene with both above water and underwater scenes in one, with Ursula under the water with her eels. Adding more characters started to take away from Ariel, plus with the time contraints, I decided to keep it down to one character.
I want to make a scene with her held up on fish hooks, with a polluted and oily ocean beneath her. I feel like it's a good fit since the oil spill in the Gulf is like hell on earth anyway.
I want to put her friends dying and covered in oil, Skuttle, Sebastian, and Flounder; washed up on shore. I'll probably add more garbage too. I'll play with this idea some more.
I didn't 'Centobite" her yet, but still plan to.

I set up a quick composition in max to see if it might work.

That concept sounds really interesting, very brooding!
How is she going to be hellraiser like?? Even though the environment is awesome ;).

I'm going to make her into a cenobite, lots of tight leather/vinyl, straps & chains. Very S&M :)

Reconsidering the idea. The other scene, although kinda morbid, didn't scream hellraiser to me. Being outside makes it too 'peaceful'.
I had an idea come to me last night and this is the result. I quickly sketched it out just so I wouldn't forget.
I want the perspective to be very drastic. I'll need to make sure the proportions and perspective are spot on for the final, but I think I might go this route.
I'm gonna start modeling the scene and if I don't think I can finish in time, I'll just use the model as reference for a 2d version.

Pretty sick scene actually.... It IS a bit more gory but the visual potential in the last scene was actually a bit higher according to me...

Really freaky but could also be cool
Hello :)
Just a note to this new picture:
Cenobites design is based heavily on sado-masochistic fetishist... stuff. So I would point on one thing that will look wrong and which is already in the sketch: loose hair. Never. I have never seen a cenobite with loose hair. In fact... I dont recall seeing any hair :)
Think latex body suits, skin tight, merging with the cenobite tissue. Tension in suit can be further split in hooks and staples that go right in the flesh. Think of agony every movement makes, replacing one pain with another... Thats a cenobite.
Useful parts of underwater equipment I would use for creating mermaid cenobite would be:
Fishnet: classic used on many cenobites cutting through flesh and creaeting the pattern and facial deformations.
Fish hooks: Classic
Goggles: Sight deprivation is very often seen on cenobites (as in sado-masochism)
Aqualung mouthpiece: wired to the face
Hoses from aqualung: Going from mid back to neck veins
Shoulder piece from old diving equipment (that part you screwed the huge metal helmet on): Screwed to the body with bolts.
Just small ideas from top of my head. :)

Thanks for the tips JAPO.
I'm still trying to find a good mix getting little mermaid into a Hellraiser style.
The initial reason I drew in the hair is because one of the key traits of Ariel is her red hair, so I thought it kinda important. You're right though, no Cenobites have hair, so I suppose if Clive Barker was making the Little Mermaid, he'd make everyone bald.
I might just add in all the detail to a 3d model and create a more simple scene, like the original movie poster.
I need to make sure I don't get too crazy and not have time to finish.

Modeled Ariel's base body shape (sans head)
Started working out the outfit design.

Really cool start on Ariel, the tail fin is cool, the stomach area looks a little bump, although I cannot see any problems in your wireframes. That a freaking outfit for her too, it's so wrong but will be so funny to see it :)
