hi guys, havent joined earlier cos i was on holiday lol. but this contest sounds cool so im definitely in, with the next week still booked off work hopefully i can get a big start on this before i go back.

my first idea is i wanted to do somethin in an anime style, but i wanted to do a scifi horror like predator, but styles like akira would suit it so i went for a more family orientated one. so this is what it'd be like if studio ghibli made predator! :haha::evil:

what do u guys think? i havent really started drawin yet cos i jus woke up. will post some concept and compositions soon as i can.

CLP

yeh this was harder than i thought. im totally not used to thinking and drawin in that old ghibli kinda style [castle in the sky/spirited away] so i spent the last coupla days researchin aka watchin those films and predator.... lol

anyways heres my first predator idea and i figure siince they really like using blob monsters as baddies this is what predator would be like, and its a bit like No Face as well. I've not given him any more predator likeness than mask and locks. Was thinkin i could turn his shoulder cannon into an extra arm or somethin.

I would really appreciate some suggestions about composition though i had an idea where it would be like the scene in princess mononoke where the forest god appears but it would be predator and dutch instead...lol

CLP
12-06-2010, 03:27 PM
just an idea of a composition, though unfinished. i am wondering whether to change dutch into a more typical ghibli hero and make him a kid but i think that might ruin it. i plan to add the other characters behind dutch and probably change his pose to somethin a little more combative but if theres any suggestions about this, probably best time to suggest is now whilst im still not sure lol.:haha:

I can't really advice u on anything really bc ur so much better than me. So far luv them both. big fan of ur work

CLP
12-06-2010, 06:14 PM
o. thanks tarik2d, :haha: theres still plenty to improve though. im findin it real hard to draw in this ghibli style lol. however for this piece im growin a little more fond of it as i colour it in, jus blocked in the colour scheme really, the backgrounds gunna need some real attention to detail as is per usual in ghibli films :) will also need to really clean up the outlines:dance:

might try another composition later if i got time, but for now i like this one.

Wow, very awesome! I was going to initially suggest that I didn't really get the predator vibe from your line drawing, but bringing the colour in really helped cement the look of the ending of "predator".

I'd say my only comment is to keep taking the predator design further, put as many hallmarks of the original Winston design in as you can, Maybe some of the dreadlocks, or hint at the netting/skin texture.

Really great work so far, I think your colour is spot on!

CLP
12-06-2010, 08:29 PM
hey puckducker, thanks for the ideas, i was afraid i was i strayin too far from the original predator look while i was tryin to get a miyazaki-style creature in there. think il try to make his hair tentacle things i put in more like the locks and il bring out his shoulder cannon arm thing more as i develop him but its gunna be hard to incorporate netting without making him look like hes wearing fishnets lol

however its unlikely to see these changes in the next update as im working from background to foreground since the background needs the most immense detail and painting. hopefully itll all turn out good. ;p

CLP
12-06-2010, 10:52 PM
a little update :haha: jus addin detail to the background. needs more work

Looking great and really capturing the Miyazaki feel.
Maybe add a bit more mossiness into the forest too?
Reckon a couple of those little white dudes with the rocking heads in the tress would be sweet too.
Great stuff!!

Awesome!
A couple of Kodamas hidden somewhere would really help to boost the Ghibli effect.

Looking very good, is this like that movie where the girls parents r turned into pigs? Is that the style u r doing? :)

That's it alright.

Gorgeous colours there! Really starting to take shape beautifully.

CLP
14-06-2010, 05:42 PM
thanks dudes,

@gumby666: hopefully il be able to replicate their style and i will add some moss soon, probably update late tonight. im wondering if those little white dudes are what Daddydooms on about , the Kodama?

@Tarik2d: that is the style im din :) although its not that film in particular [spirited away], im gearing more towards princess mononoke.

hopefuly il be able to incorporate more of predators features like Puckducker suggested

The forest background is already very good. I'm unfamiliar with the movies you're doing but I do remember Spirited Away. Going to be a good one!

CLP
16-06-2010, 08:48 PM
well here i was thinkin i was gunna post a reply somewhat earlier lol but the e3 stuff was too interestin!

anyways just done more background stuff, made the closer trees a little mossy as well as adding a small outline around em like ghibli kinda do on stuff closer to foreground, probably need further work and those very distant trees need detailing but im gunna move to the foreground stuff for now.

probably another update later tonight or tmoz.

need to put in those white spirit things too :)

lovely piece so far, really coming along.

Great progress!!!
Was thinking about this last night and thought you could even try adding some of the black 'demon hand' to Dutch, like the hero in Mononoke had. From memory it was kinda like a black scarring and there were times that it kinda throbbed with the demon blood.
Just an idea :haha:

DaddyDoom
17-06-2010, 07:04 AM
That could actually work quite well!
Nice updates!

CLP
19-06-2010, 01:01 AM
hey dudes, cool suggestion. i will most certainly incorporate the demon thingy onto dutch when i redo him, im gunna repose him to somethin a littlemore combative, maybe with a massive knife out. anyway thanks guys.

update includes foreground work, the rocks and tree the predator is standin on and the predator himself. i've added dreadlocks like someone suggested earlier. but i didnt wanna totally complete him yet in case someone has a cool idea for me to try out lol. the rock thing hes holdin in that small hand is like a fantasy rendition of the shoulder cannon.

well open to crits at this stage. especially as im off to bed, leavin time for ppl to crit before i try to finish tmoz. probably wont lol. :lame:

This is looking so good, reminds me of Manga/Anime style it looks so profressional too, excellent linework and grogeous colouring so far and that new light is superb :)

Thanks for the comments guys. I think I'm pretty much done with the main parts of the scene. The big thing for me is that I need to create the feeling motion in the scene as if it's a cel from the production of such a film.

If anyone's got any ideas about how to do that I'd appreciate it. I tried doing the foreground vege with a bit of focal blur [not shown here] but I'm not sure if thats how they do it in the film.

Other suggestions about content would also be welcome. Things like is the predator predator-like enough. I'm not sure if he should wear armor as I want him to reflect the spirit-like quality of ghibli beasts.

Freakn ace!!!
Really love it and definitely capturing the Ghibli feel!

Couple of things you could consider.
Maybe put a camouflage pattern on Dutch's pants?
Have you tried removing the demon pattern from his chest?
As it is now it kinda makes the chest lose definition.
If you kept it to only on the arm the chest may stand out more.

The other thing is a bit stupid but I'll mention it anyway.
Would it work better if the whole scene was flipped horizontally?
Just that if you did this then Dutch would be holding the knife in his right hand and have the demon infection on his left as per the Mononoke movie.
Pretty anal I know so feel free to disregard that

Keep up the wicked work!!

chunkymunky
21-06-2010, 07:15 AM
I'm not sure if motion blur would ruin the scene....how have your tests been? Too much of an effect or is it simply not working or not?

CLP
21-06-2010, 10:16 PM
Thanks dudes :haha:

@gumby666: i'm definitely gunna take some of what you said there and add it. I kinda wanted to do the camo pants earlier but i was a little afraid it wouldn't work as i watched a couple of old ghibli films and they don't tend to do textures like that. Think il put it in though since someone other than myself has suggested it.

And i definitely agree about the mark on the arm extending too far since i thought his chest looke like his back or somethin a couple of times i looked at the pic with fresh eyes.

As for your final suggestion...yeh pretty anal :haha: but i'v yet to add the little white spirit dudes, hopefully il get those in soon.

@chunkymunky: I've tried some gaussian blur on the closest layer of veg, those dark grass bits and leaves but it doesnt do a great deal for the pic. I'm thinking of trying some kind of focal blur with the distant background stuff but that compromises detail. And as for motion blur, I dont think they really did that in the films, least not an awful lot and especially not on the characters.

Now i was gunna try to complete the scene tonight but i got distracted by games lol so i think il try tmoz.

Me again :lame:
Just one final thought (if I put as much attention into my own submission I might actually get something finished haha!) but you may have already contemplated this.
Was thinking you could put the triangle predator targeting pattern onto the stone in his hand and then with the glow you've got it could show up on Dutch's chest. Like it does in the Predator movies before limbs get blown off.
As I said just a thought!

Can't wait to see the final!!

Hope to get a chance to do some more work on mine tonight but I'm off on my honeymoon on Friday morning so may be struggling to finish.

great!

CLP
22-06-2010, 11:15 PM
@gumby: i added the laser sight ;p its one of the iconic sdymbols of predator rreally so i needed to get that in, since my predator is lacking in predatorlike form.

and enjoy ur honeymoon! lol try to finish ur piece too!

anyways it doesnt look a whole lot different but the backs got a bit of focal blur going on, so i'd like to know what u guys think of it, too much/too little? makes no difference? lol:dance: it certainly helps to push the characters further into the foreground but at the cost of a little detail.

added kodamas too....lol:lame: might need to add more as they appear in more than a handful in the movie.

gumby666
23-06-2010, 03:57 AM
That's fantastic!!!!!
Really, really good!
The blur works ok but are you able to keep the foreground trees sharp?
I think the detail on these is worth keeping.
The Kadomas rock!!
Think the one near Dutch is a little distracting though.
Maybe he can join his mates on the left??

Love it!!!! :lurve:
Want it as my computer's wallpaper

DaddyDoom

not much new on this update, just tweaks. left the middle set of trees blurred but undid the blur on the closest trees. added more kodama....too many? bad positioning? it seems theyre a bit too bunched to the left but i think it kinda works. i cant see it with a couple of the right, might appear too busy. it looked pretty good with the original three.

theres a hint of blue glow across the top, jus to giv a feel of night.

I'm really sure what else i could do to this piece so i might leave it for a week or somethin, unless i get a new composition idea lol. :haha:

@gumby666: if u want a wallpaper version jus let us know ur screen res and when i fniish il do one for u:wave:

any more advice or suggestions are still welcome since theres a while to go.

I really love Princess Mononoke, is one of my...three favourite films. I also love other Miyazaki's films, and think you really nailed it, the colours, the athmosphere, and the style.

Really cool work. When you finish it, its going to go direct to my desktop.

hey dudes!

thanks for all the support chunkymunky and daddydoom! :)

@gumby666 and pables: for me this piece is finished for the moment, i really dont wanna overwork it. however i will return to it, probably sooner than i'd like (like tmorrow lol) but! tada, heres a wallpaper of the current one at the size gumby put down. :haha:

@yaRa: thanks for the crit dude, i think i see what u mean. for the scene his arm isnt tense enough right? just makin sure i understand what u mean before i try tweakin it lol :)

A true work of art, looks like a cel from a professional animated movie, this is without doubt one of THE best artworks i've seen in the challenges for a while. Superb.

I know what you mean, you don't wanna overwork it, because you're fearful it might ruin it, I can totally understand that, I think it's a good call to leave it, maybe in a week or so you might wanna come back to it and tweak little things here and there, distance away from the piece always works well in my opinion, then when you return to it after being away from the artwork for a while, you may notice something wrong or missing and then can tweak/alter it accordingly.

Wonderful work :)

Great work! I'm a huge fan of predator and Miyazaki's movies, and you have captured the essence of both perfectly. Congrats!

CLP
28-06-2010, 08:00 PM
thanks chunkymunky and Maxter1, im grateful for the vote of confidence

i don't usually do the leaving pieces for a while thing because i end up not comin back to it :haha: but hopefully il tweak this piece soon. i do like yaRas crit about the right arm bein somewhat relaxed, if im understandin his idea, and that it should be a bit more tense whether clenched or not. I'l be trying to test these things this week but Brazil is playin tonight :lame:

there may be an update on this piece tomorrow or day after i think.

Hey!
I haven't seen the movie predator, and i don't really understand whats the second movie you are mixing. From the comments, i assume this must be a good mix :D But with the eyes of someone who hasn't seen both films, this is kind of plain. I mean where is the nipples of the guy?:D

Just kidding with the nipple, but seriously.. can someone fill me in which movies should i watch to understand this piece?

CLP
13-07-2010, 08:33 PM
@cordero: i can believe u havent seen these movies!! lol ;ooo

anyways yeh predator is obviously the content of the image and the studio ghibli films are the style i've taken from, in particular princess mononoke though the maybe a bit of spirited away influence in there too!

i recommend u check either of those out if u like animation cos theyre pretty awesome films.

ps. the lack of nipples was from the studio ghibli influence as im sure they didnt really do them, least not in those particular films...could be wrong. lol if anybody can shed shed some light on this particular thing jus comment lol :)

Cordero
13-07-2010, 08:59 PM
cool!
Yeah i'm gonna check those films out asap :D most of the comments are like "omg" and i would like to join :D

on the nipple thing.. i hate nipples!:D if you don't put them on a sculpt, they miss.. if you put them, they look funny :D the "lack of nipples" caused me to think that the main character is showing his back to the point of view. (especially on the picture you posted on the second page, third image from top)
but yeah, its a cool work, will be back after checking those movies out.

CLP
13-07-2010, 09:51 PM
haha well whilst ur checkin out those films, ive tweaked him a little, nipples didnt work but ive highlighted abs and ribs but i think maybe it works a little too well, too defined. still its easier to see whats goin on so i might replace my finals page one with this. lol

edit:removed the rib bits since puttin this pic on and usin that as final
