I hope somebody can help me out with a problem I'm having.

To make a long story short, I was wondering if there is a way to set up 3ds Max preferences so that when I chose to export a file, it automatically goes to the same folder I imported from, rather than defaulting to whichever directory I previously exported to?

We are always working on multiple files at the same time at work, and changing this option would make it much easier to prevent accidental file mix-ups. I just dont know if the options exists :)

Thanks for any help you can offer!

I considered that as well yesterday, but it won't work. That option only allows me to change the default location, but wont update as i manually select different directories.

that's windows doing that I think.

simple solution - import and export using the same folder

Import/Export can also be scripted, so you could explicitly specify a folder.

First, download the 3ds Max Exporter Tool. Exit 3ds Max if it is running.

Then follow these steps:
- Unzip the file you downloaded. It contains one file, multiverse-tools.ms script.
- Move the multiverse-tools.ms file to your 3dsMax \Scripts\Startup directory, by default C:\Program
Files\Autodesk\3dsMax8\Scripts\Startup or C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 9\Scripts\Startup.
- Start 3dsMax. Once Max opens, the Multiverse dialog box is opened on top. You can close it and
access it later from the multiverse entry on the Main Menu Bar.
- There will now be Multiverse menu item in the 3ds Max menu bar:
- Open the Export Tool dialog, if it was not opened automatically. Choose Multiverse | Export Tool.
- You will see the Multiverse Export Tool dialog box:
