View Full Version : Week #7 - Old Thai Monastery - Low Poly

Hi All,

Sorry it's been a while since we had one of these but the other day I remembered I photographed this very old Thai building where the monks used to live. This was before we did these comps so I didnt get a full a set as I would have liked but there is still plenty to go on.

Big Toe has suggested the (rather tough) limits for this week, they are 500 tris and 512 texture sheet, so its going to be a real challenge with such tight limits and such details to cover, he has also said he would like people to have a go at the surrounding area and objects as well as just the building if you can! (optional but good for points) - any textures are cool, normals, specs etc to make it look as near to the photo as possible! As this is how they will be judged

Here is the photo set (http://freetextures.3dtotal.com/index.php?iset=304&pp=)

Please post your wire, clay, texture sheets and final render in this thread, wip and on topic chat is also fine here too, these challenges are supposed to be fun and we are not too strict on the rules. The only prizes are a gold, silver and bronze awards handed out each week. http://forums.3dtotal.com/picture.php?albumid=1291&pictureid=10526http://forums.3dtotal.com/picture.php?albumid=1291&pictureid=10525http://forums.3dtotal.com/picture.php?albumid=1291&pictureid=10524

Deadlines as always Midday GMT 1 week away, so this will be Wednesday 27th October

Also please note that one of the reasons for these challenges is to help grow our free resource libraries, so the model donations at some point in the future when our system is ready would make us very happy and give a new dimension to the free image library we are building up every week.

Good to see the low poly photo modeling coming back. What's the deadline for this? Wednesday the 27th?

500 tries for entire scene?

Yes well spotted, that is correct and I have amended the brief.

500 tries for entire scene?

I would say go for the building, the steps, the yard and the simple statues...maybe the wall around the yard too?

Or you can just go for the building or anything inbetween, Big Toe seemed to think that 500 for just the building was a bit too generous!

Awesome challenge! Will be hard to decide what details to skip on.

Hi ! Are you guys looking for a single shot (that way we can optimize the whole thing) or we must see the building in different angles ? Thanks !

Thats a nice start. I'm going to assume this is a shot of the backside, as the front of the building has 2 sets of stairs.

This is going to be harder than I thought. I can only get the small statues (without the top part) trying to be super low poly to 73 tris a piece. I think there are 8 of these; 3 on the front, 3 on the back, and 1 on each side.

That would be 584 tris right there. I reeeeeeeeeally gotta cut down the detail. These might even need to be turned into a set of 2 planes with images for a total of 4 tris a piece.

Yes its gotta work for multi angles and be a complete model please

These challenges are a bit of a learning game for us too, maybe this one is a but too tough, but I guess it's good to mix it up a bit, we could be over generous on some in the future too for more detailed results.

cheers everyone else for your interest too

So i decided to just model everything quite low poly and see where it needed optimisation when i noticed i was already almost 300 tri's over budget... Lets see what i want to lose.
ps, see-through is put on some objects to show where i want to use alpha's

If these statues are the ones on the wall pieces then I counted 10.
There are 4 on the side with one stairs and 6 on the side with 2 stairs. Basically each time the wall ends there is a statue on the wall.

Here's my WIP entry. So I managed to complete the monastery and the outside wall area within the given limit which was difficult enough lol. The yard statues seem to be an impending problem with me and no matter what way I seem to model them, they push me far past the 500 tri limit.
Well this is why I wanted to initially do this challenge... because it really seemed like a CHALLENGE (caps was necassary :D). I wish everyone good luck with this one. Its good to see the challenges back :)

Hello, all!

My name is JP and I'm a long time visitor on 3DTotal but I haven't really posted much here. Anyway, I decided to take part on this one and try to create as much as possible by these 500 tris.

Well, if this one was a real game art ( etc. ) I would certainly do this other way. Of course, instead of using one diffuse map I would create one map for trees and plants, one for roofs, etc or something similar. And because of that I wanted to test what I could do by one 512 diffuse.

So here's what I got done this far. I also did a very quick painting by using 3DTotal textures. Hope you like it! :)

Here's my finished entry. At 496 tris; 512 textures.

Thank you, VersionThirst!

Your way of modeling and texturing seems very similar to my way. You scene looks good indeed!

What comes to my scene and texture map, I basically wanted to be as exact as possible when it comes to building itself. So that's how I have filled the space of a diffuse map and roof and walls fill the most of the space. I still do some tests with other maps and post the final set after that.

Here is the diffuse map.

Here`s my entry, I`ve used maya and the vertex chameleon plugin.
I ended up designing the model for the angle seen in the photograph and made the mistake of deleting the back faces, but I guess I know better for next time.)

499 tri`s and one 512 tga texture.

So here is the first go at low poly modeling comp. Playing around with a few ideas, still have a few more to work on and try out. I love that the limit is so low. makes a person evaluate what is important and isn't in the scene. I'm shooting for a full scene with tree's. Fingers crossed.

Thanks for your help. I meant this:

"Forums on some websites require a moderator to review the post before its actually placed in the forum to be seen by everyone.".

Maybe there is some kind of limit for image links or something because I hadn't that problem before. Anyway, I have a bunch of new images to show but seems like they are somewhere in a global bitstream. :) I'll try to post them again.

So here is my final entry.

- 499 tris
- I focused on the building itself and used most of the texture space for it. I also wanted to create a scene with some surroundings but wanted to keep trees and other elements on lower priority.
- Tried to be as exact as possible what comes to stair count, roof plates, different windows and other things to keep the object as near original reference as possible
- Only one UV ( no separate UV for normals etc )

A very quick sketch / painting

I had a lot of fun with this one. The objects to be modeled were a little vague though. Wasn't sure what should/shouldn't be attempted; for this reason a lot of the entries differ greatly.

I prefer photo challenges where it's an object and the only thing needed to be modeled is the object and not the surrounding area; like the dumpster, bike, or tomb. This keeps most of the entries pretty consistent.
