Weapons Of Dominance
The idea here is to create an ultimate weapon, one so powerful it can’t help but win a war. One so great, the mere mention of it’s name causes the enemy to surrender. One so horrendous, the wielder has to crazy to even try to use it.
Limits / Restrictions:
I’m thinking we can go two ways with this one:
1. All out, no limits. Unlimited tris, unlimited textures, render however you want.
or
2. 4,000 tri limit, 1 (2048x2048) texture sheet (diffuse, spec, normal, blah, blah, blah) viewport renders a must(first person shooter point of view), render engines just for fun. Moving parts would be nice too.

Final Entry Thread will be up the week before the deadline

I suggest doing poly and texture limit. Give artist some guideline to work with.
and also... A Feb 20th deadline might be too long for a weapon. Maybe half can be weapon half is armor. Just a thought.

the good news is, you get to pick which way you want to go with this. The time line is set up so, if you want to enter both the game art and the concept art portions, you can.
Draw up something, then model it.

presumably any projectiles etc, would need to be included in the poly/texture limits
and..
i imagine you'd only need to include one of each unique projectile in that limit (ie. if you feature 10 identical (instanced) bullets in your beauty shots you'd only have count one in your poly/texture limit?
did that make sense?

poopipe: I think 6k is under the line of "no limit", which is the first option of the two. Let me know if I'm mistaken :D

The performance hit from a model comes from pixel shaders and texture usage - not polycount (within reason). modern GPUs are capable of pushing extremely large volumes of geometry around (tens or hundreds of millions of tris) very happily, the crunch comes when you start throwing high res normal/spec/etc maps and post effects into the mix (and that's largely unconnected to polycount)
I feel the polycounts in a lot of comps are set unrealistically low these days tbh. 10k on a character is hardly high end realtime specs (GOW had them at 20k plus and that happened years ago) and it seems to me we really ought to be pushing towards next generation specs (i'd guess we're looking at 50-100k on a major character)
The extra 2k will give space for curved surfaces and nice accessories like strap fixings, detailed ammo belts and so on.

to say the truth i agree both of you.. but i still like the lower polycount coz that's more of a challange..
when you bake from a high poly model the lower the poly limit the more proffessional you must be abot low poly modeling and baking to create a nice silhoutte with a nice result :)
btw nowdays with consoles getting old and games on your phone the low poly modelling grows more important today..

So I had a free hour, and started on this! (actually I had free time before aswell, but I had no motivation :D)
Lil' description about the weapon:
It's clearly made for destruction! If you think, its unbalanced, or not effective because of the many things on it, then its definitely not the weapon made for you. This baby is for those, who sees art in destruction, beautiful symphonies in the sound of roaring screams, and hysterical cries...:evil:
I'll make this weapon funny, it is of course not a serious thing :) The main reason I made this so complicated is because this way it can blow, burn, shot, poison, cut the enemy. It also makes pizza, and talks to girlfriends who's man is working for DW to win another trophy for 3dtotal! :D
Anyway, hurry up guys, lets see some weapons here! (not that I didnt like the boobs :D)

Cordero - So its a Flame-Throwing-Sniping-Mini-Gun-With-A-Sword-For-A-Bayonet? That certainly is pretty "ultimate." The bipod is bothering me as you have it now, maybe it could be a couple of axe blades or something?

Warlock 279 Exactly man! Only little mistake there, that is not a flame thrower! Those are toxic containers which contains compressed gas (in form of liquid) and it sprays out as gas on the end of the two "things" :D
This way I can have green glow on the containers, which is a really awesome, and overused feature, and because of that I can't miss it on the ultimate gun :D
Yeah, bipoed was a place holder, so I wont forget to put it there :D blade idea is ace btw!
Probably gonna go steampunk on its ass :D

used the stuff I saw from Buzzy during the pre-dw challenge on the middle one. Too many flat places, it doesn't look that good with this model :(

started on texturing.. handle may be a bit too red/saturated at the moment, but I'll see how it works with the other stuff on the weapon. same goes for the blood, its very gray, but I don't know yet how red that should be :(

Grayed out stuff is... well not final :D some of the stuff which are visible aren't final too, like the magazines, and most of the things... but that's why its called wip, I guess..
Need to balance colors out at the end. on the previous update, I liked it, now it starts to look mixed, and ugly.

Working right now actually :).
Adding in details as I go right now, last one was another ventilation shaft...
Thing is that I think about making this tank ginormous! But I'm not sure if I will ever bother doing that much detail XD
Either way the tracks look good as they are now but they are too flat so right now I want to pick one track and make all others instances of that object... Any advice on the matter? (I use maya)
edit: will go eat now but if anyone has any advice on the matter I would greatly appreciate it :)

I was most confident with the results I was getting with this weapon (texture wise) until tsabszy pointed out some things which can be improved. Aaaand in order to bring better quality, I'm off to work a bit on my texturing skill :D
Well of course, the weapon will be finished. I finished every threedy challenge I started in the last year, so why would I miss the most important one of all: the warmup before dominance war! :D so don't start to celebrate yet folks, I'll be back! More powerful than EVAR :DD

Hi!
Great job by everyone so far.
I Honestly forgot that this challenge was running, sorry! Today I whipped up this model with the idea that I might use it in a half-life 1 map. These swords and shields certainly were the ultimate weapon in their time.
It's less than 512 Tris, and the texture is a 1024x1024 diffuse (but I`ll probably end up taking it down to 512x512.)
The shield texture is mirrored left to right, and the back shares that same texture space.
BTW, this might be the first original low poly model that I`ve actually completed.

Lampshadehead - Would be nice to see some wires so that we can judge the lowpoly and its edgeflow :). Try working with shadows and highlights on the shield a bit more!

No i mean that if you want you could always just take the high poly, dump texturing and make slap on some nice shaders...
But if you want to use textures then you should as I said before look into a third party unwrapping tool like Roadkill or Headus UVLayout... (both are free)

I manually unwrap my models. It might take longer with an hour than an automatic program like Unwrella, but I like the process, I learn from each one.
Also, no matter what they say, hand unwrapped models are better!:D

Update on the wood part of the gun. I've been doing some texture drawing practice with the help of tsabszy, and I finally used it on the gun, trying to bring it to the next level.

BiG ToE-3DT looks cool! for me the gun-stock looks too weak now, that big circle (where you put your hand into i bet) should be thicker and look a bit stronger.. coz the whole weapon looks massive and heavy and it's not balanced now
will you create high poly model for it? if this is the low poly i assume you are gonna use a negative cone for the barrel of the gun, which gives you the best result for a deep hole (like the barrel)
can't wait for the reasult!

Currently at 3074 tris, minus the few I will be able to shave off once I remove the symmetry modifier. Still gotta build arms and some cables, hydraulic cylinders and stuff.
Edges are automatically smoothed depending on the angle right now, which is why it may look weird in some places.

ok, so instead of actually hold this gun, you place your hand/arm in the energy orb. The orb uses your life force to power the gun. The more you "use" this gun, the more life force it drains from your body. So in other words, I'm too lazy to fix anything that might not work if it was real.

Weapons Of Dominance
The idea here is to create an ultimate weapon, one so powerful it can’t help but win a war. One so great, the mere mention of it’s name causes the enemy to surrender. One so horrendous, the wielder has to crazy to even try to use it.
Limits / Restrictions:
I’m thinking we can go two ways with this one:
1. All out, no limits. Unlimited tris, unlimited textures, render however you want.
or
2. 4,000 tri limit, 1 (2048x2048) texture sheet (diffuse, spec, normal, blah, blah, blah) viewport renders a must(first person shooter point of view), render engines just for fun. Moving parts would be nice too.
DUE DATE: Feb 20th 11:59pm GMT
Final Entry Thread will be up the week before the deadline

So, anyone decided on the restrictrions yet? Seeing all kinds of different entries would suggest the "(first person shooter point of view)" doesn't really apply anymore?

You got the spare polys to give the blade more of a curve? More like a machette? The blade also needs a more stylized texture. It stands out a bit compared to the rest of the gun metal, which looks fantastic btw.

Push it a bit more Cordero, we're not far from deadline, outline/detail what you wanna show, hide a bit what you don't wanna show. Big-Toe gived to you some nice idea. Sometimes inspiration comes again when your back onto the work.
On a work/project there is always a time when motivation drops, it looks like craps and you want to remake everything. It's a common attitude we all get soon or later, just because there is an evolution and changes that's on any work. One of the cause (despite tolerance reach) is simply your own critical attitude, hard to overcome, you can think about finality. Don't give up man!

Started this 2 days ago, but other things have been slowing my progress.
also had issues with rendering, but I posted that on another part of the forum ;)
This will be a high poly project so i hope everything goes well. (I hope my GTX 460 can handle the poly count)
Its starting to look like a walking Roman shield, which was not planed for but hopefully it will be fixed when texturing :)
I will add a description in later.

The actual tracks are made from a single track which I then used with a buggy ass script to space them out along a motion path I set up :)
Then I made sure to set the wheels so that they are positioned in the actual cavities of the track.
Not too sure right now of what I should actually add and continue with, any hints?

start with any oppacity image plane. play with that, see what you can come up with.
Hop on one of this image search images, look for fire, or flames, then slap that sucker on the image plane. Copy the layer, use your levels to make it black and white. Good to go.

well um, washka I was never really intending the weapon to be a shield. The robots purpose was to enter enemy military bases and hack into their private military computer systems and steal data. The shield plate would help protect the robots inner organs as well as deflect enemy radar.
I guess the robot could be a bit more attack like but I'm not to sure. What do u guys think ;)
Oh and one other thing, I am aloud to use unlimited polygons?

Washka: It connects with the plug at the front of the shield (a cord comes out). I also really wanted to develop this guy but time was against me and I really wanted to get something up to show you guys. I've started UV mapping, but its as slow as anything because texturing isn't one of my strong spots.

Ok I think I'm out of this competition, My brain has officially exploded and I'm now trying to mop it up :wall: My model has to many bits and pieces to unfold and I just don't have the motivation to continue :cry: so um unless anyone has any crazy ideas to speed up the process or if I'm aloud to submit a clay render or something like that, well then I'm officially out. I spent so much time trying to get this done before the deadline :ugh:

astroAJ: well for your model, you have a few things that are the same. So you only need to unwrap one. Like the legs for example. You have 6, but you only unwrap one. delete out the others. After the unwrap is done, collapse the stack, saving the unwrap to the mesh. Then copy that leg as many times as you need, they will all have the unwrap info saved. You can do this for all parts of the model that have more than one.

BiG ToE-3DT I have been doing as you say but there are just so many faces to select after I added the extra edge loops in, to allow the mesh to smooth nicely. That's what's really slowing my progress down.
Oh and in the image some objects have only been partially mapped becuase I gave up on them :( UV mapping has really sucked the creativity out of me and this project that I was super enthusiastic to do is now going at a snail pace. I'll try and give these UV's one last shot ;)

astroAJ: one thing that may help (this works in 3ds max, not sure about maya) remove your edge loops for the UV mapping. Adding edge loops will not mess up the configuration of your UV map. In Max i usually:
UV the low poly
Then add loops after the UV process is complete, put a turbosmooth
Open the UV's and adjust the UV accordingly.
Again not sure if that will help in Maya, but thats usually how i can texture a Highpoly object. But also if its going to take too long to take edge loops out, then place them back in, not sure how to help you there :( Wish i knew more.

astroJ, you could also just make some fast 3D proxy render (with custom mat), and paint/tex over it, and when you post your final, you just explain that there is no UV/tex.
But I don't know if officials would agree with this lazy method...

My small contribution, main objective is being minimalist while preserving the style. So I'll try get lowest poly count possible, two maps, 512 or lower if I can. I'll use planes for the spikes, don't know yet for lace rope.
Concept: It's a gobelin improved mace with a toasted/electro-carbonized crow.
They used some kind of glu on a lightning exposed tree to trap da bird, sometimes a gob trap himself too...
