View Full Version : Week #9 - Little boat - Low Poly

Hi All,

So this time round we are going for this rather waterlogged boat
http://freetextures.3dtotal.com/index.php?iset=1725&pp=
The object is to make your render as close to the photos as possible, so water inside and some grass/ground to mount the model should be included. (dont worry about the river though ;))

BT-3dt has set the limits and will be judging this one too, 1000 tri limit, and a 512 texture sheet, any textures are cool, normals, specs etc to make it look as near to the photo as possible! As this is how they will be judged.

Please post your wire, clay, texture sheets and final render in this thread, wip and on topic chat is also fine here too, these challenges are supposed to be fun and we are not too strict on the rules. The prizes are a gold, silver and bronze awards handed out each week. http://forums.3dtotal.com/picture.php?albumid=1291&pictureid=10526http://forums.3dtotal.com/picture.php?albumid=1291&pictureid=10525http://forums.3dtotal.com/picture.php?albumid=1291&pictureid=10524

We will also post out a couple of t-shirts for 1st and 2nd places.

This one will run for 1 week and the deadline will be Wednesday 27th Jan 2011 at midday GMT

Also please note that one of the reasons for these challenges is to help grow our free resource libraries, so the model donations at some point in the future when our system is ready would make us very happy and give a new dimension to the free image library we are building up every week.

Sweet Tom :)

This is going to be a tough one, but i will give it a try.

needse
19-01-2011, 04:43 PM
yeah im in how

how do you set 3d max to display tri count rather than poly count ?

MStandar
19-01-2011, 04:51 PM
which version of max?

i use max 2010, and there you go to viewport settings, statics, and at that page you can check show triangle count

needse
19-01-2011, 05:01 PM
thanks m8 but sorry iam also using 2010 64bit wheres viewport settings ,because iam going to customize/pref/viewports but statics is not there ,sorry if im being a complete ....... just got poly count no tris count arrgghh

MStandar
19-01-2011, 05:34 PM
Here you go, i made this.
Hope it works for you :)

just noticed that it goes a bit fast, just let it loop through a couple of times hopefully you catch all the text.

sorry i didnt convert it again to a mesh then check the count i get it now :wall:

Slayer89
19-01-2011, 06:20 PM
I've got the rough shape of the boat done, will post a wip when I get back from campus.

@rocneasta - I'm sure you'll do fine.

@needse - I don't think nurbs subd is allowed as it isnt a polygon then. Not sure though so check with Tom

needse
19-01-2011, 06:53 PM
is this legal ? 157 tris so far

ive never done low poly either so don't really understand it and to texture it do i have to attach all elements then unwrap like that ?

McKronic
19-01-2011, 07:42 PM
I might give this one a try.

needse: you really only have to model the area of grass around the base of the boat to make some kind of base for the boat to sit on, no sense wasting tri's running geo all the way to the bg, but you can if you want. When it comes to unwrapping you do not need to attach all of your objects you can unwrap them all individually.

Hi all, my first contest / post for this site. I had to join for this competition seeing after watching the last two from the sidelines ;)

Currently 486 tris and shaping the thing before cutting back. Nice choice for a model :D

Here is my first update. So far i have 978 tris. I think that I finished the modeling part, and i am working on the unwrap UV.

McKronic
22-01-2011, 02:35 AM
Great work so far everyone. I'm at 956 tri's now, I might save the rest for the water and ground plane.

I have a question, do you have to use uv space for the water or can you just put a shader on it?

Isaac_Felton
22-01-2011, 07:39 AM
Wow there's a lot of work being done here and it's looking good. Here's another update.

Great stuff being made here; great to see it from a couple different approaches.

Here's my model so far. I have some extra tris for more grass and plants underneath it.

Time to texture.

Mikleton
22-01-2011, 03:59 PM
So, I think it's time I stopped slyly skulking around and actually DO something here. And I shall make my introduction with a boat! I'm enjoying this one, and there's lots of good work from you lot too.

Just shy of the tri limit, but i'm about to re-do the rope.

im still trying to figure out how to unwrap all textures for separate objects on 1 map lol

Mikleton
24-01-2011, 07:42 AM
Not sure if it's the right way to do it, but you can just select all of your objects and apply the uv unwrap modifier. Then just unwrap as normal.

Does anyone know why after seeing so bring texture model? It is very annoying. The rendering shown properly. Autodesk Softimage 2011 64-bit software is . needse does not look bad.

VersionFirst / Needse: great job!

Here is my WIP. Halfway through my tri's and i hope that i can spend some more time on it tonight / tomorrow morning and to finish it in time, i guess it will be tough. Then again, great to get started again and to shape up for some more competitions.

This is what I have so far.

I'm at 900 tris and still have some foilage left and of course the railing at the back of the boat. Might work out done as alpha but I'll see if I model it and just cut some tris somewhere else.

It is unwrapped already and I started with the texturing yesterday so I should make it this time.

Mikleton
25-01-2011, 01:09 PM
And ready to submit I am! Hoorah. Those dandelions just didn't look as pretty as I wanted them too..Pshaw. Had a lot of fun with this one though.

Cool to hear about some different approach! Did you use some kind of camera mapping or did you just eyeball everything?

I'm having a bit of trouble getting the proportions right, so any suggestions for getting better proportions would be great as well!

Mikleton: Well done as well, looks quite convincing!

Mikleton
25-01-2011, 02:03 PM
Thanks for the kind words, they make me happyful. :)

As for the proportions, I just set up a plane with the side on photo of the boat and modelled infront of that to get the basic size and shape. I modelled the rest by eye, looking back at the reference images a lot until it looked pretty!

needse
25-01-2011, 02:04 PM
i personally eye balled it lol i didn't even realize there was a side shot of the boat i just used the one image on the forum post lol.what you should do is put the images in as your veiwport background so u can adjust the proportions to match that of the image hope this helps

rocneasta

needse don't count your chickens before they're hatched :)

for example i went shopping today, gotten home and opened my fridge.

Inside i had two cardboard packages of 12 eggs - one had 6 eggs in it, the other had 7. I also bought 12 eggs while shopping - so to save space i wanted to place 4 eggs with those 6 and place the remaining 3 on the door in the space holder for eggs.

In my efforts to do so, i ended up breaking 3 of those last eggs, since the package lost balance and flipped to the floor

Hence i had 27 eggs, and now i have 24...

(short proverb, long story :p)

p.s. @ Tom - isn't wednesday 26th?

needse
25-01-2011, 06:28 PM

It has been a while since entering a competition here and thought I would give this one a try. I must say that this was quite a tricky challenge, required almost organic modelling techniques and the photo angles was again quite challenging to make the texture maps.

Here is my submission... good luck everyone!

Edit: the final tri-count: 998
