Hi All,

Managed to dig out an old set we havent done yet (we started with the gateway if you remember a few months back) Well here is the big one, the church itself.
http://freetextures.3dtotal.com/index.php?iset=1447&pp=
The object is to make your render as close to the photos as possible, no grass, trees, graves etc just the church is needed.

BT-3dt has set the limits and will be hopefully judging this one too, 1024 tri limit, and a 1024 texture sheet, any textures are cool, normals, specs etc to make it look as near to the photo as possible! As this is how they will be judged.

Please post your wire, clay, texture sheets and final render in this thread, wip and on topic chat is also fine here too, these challenges are supposed to be fun and we are not too strict on the rules. The prizes are a gold, silver and bronze awards handed out each week. http://forums.3dtotal.com/picture.php?albumid=1291&pictureid=10526http://forums.3dtotal.com/picture.php?albumid=1291&pictureid=10525http://forums.3dtotal.com/picture.php?albumid=1291&pictureid=10524

We will also post out a couple of t-shirts for 1st and 2nd places.

This one will run for 1 week and the deadline will be Friday 18th Feb 2011 at midday GMT

Also please note that one of the reasons for these challenges is to help grow our free resource libraries, so the model donations at some point in the future when our system is ready would make us very happy and give a new dimension to the free image library we are building up every week.

The satellite view might be interesting too, get your footprint dimentions...play with the little orange man etc etc

sweet, I haven't done a building in a very long time, this should be fun. The satellite view is an awesome idea :D

Sweet, I actually have time to do this one.

Um. The link for the photo set goes to the boat, instead of the church

Here is the actual link: Church (http://freetextures.3dtotal.com/index.php?iset=1447&pp=)

I will try my best to model this one :). Keeping it that polycount will be tough for me, same with the texturing, but It's good practice and a great cause :).

Added the brick extrusions on all sides of the church. Starting on the windows.

Getting there, the proportions are probably not the best.

Even so. It's hard to figure out the proportions of churches. It has some strange lens that camera.

i'd like to give this one a try.
I hope i can, at least, keep up with you all.

Current WIP. Majority of things have been added. Got a little under a hundred tri's to spare.

Excellent, I've been waiting for one of these to start. Quick question however, do we create the whole church or just the angle we can see in the photo?

Excellent, I've been waiting for one of these to start. Quick question however, do we create the whole church or just the angle we can see in the photo?

If you check out the link in the OP you'll see that there are many more angles, so it's the whole church me thinks.

Yes, you model the whole church, within the limits of the challenge

Only need to worry about the church. Next step would be unwrapping and texturing

already unwrapping it. unwrapping is not fun.

looking good so far!.. If it's for a game res I suggest grabbing the 3pointshader. It's great for max viewport screenshots with normal maps, shadows, etc. Very flexible.

astroAJ
14-02-2011, 08:01 AM
Kybe did U manually unwrap all the UV's (using planer mapping etc) becuase a whole day to unwrap sounds very long on quite a low poly model??

i'm also in, in this one... made the basic shape of the church (worktime: apr. 30min in blender). Didn't use blender that often and forgot the shortcuts :hmm:

Yeah I sort of did. Is that bad? I'll admit I didn't have the best work ethic through the day, but lets face it, UVs are boring.

Kybe
15-02-2011, 04:41 AM
i got about 1/3rd of my texture done in one day, can't do anything tomorrow because skiing, which only leaves me wednesday and thursday, plus i have to do the bumps and normals, and this is all on top of school work. i'm a bit worried about finishing this on time.

astroAJ
15-02-2011, 06:28 AM
Kybe: Yeah a whole day does seem a bit long on UV mapping but its easy to get fast at. Try to research as much as possible about different UV mapping techniques becuase it really helps to become fast at it, so that u don't have to spend the whole day doing it and u can continue with the creative process. I use automatic mapping in Maya and that speeds things up, as well as duplicating objects after they have been mapped (I'm not sure what software ur using).

hope that helps ;)

hey, this challenge looks awesome. i'm definitely gonna attempt to finish this in time--fingers crossed. i have about 400tri's to play with, and i still need to add the windows on both buildings for the front and back. think i still have enuff to make 'em look pretty tho. here's an update of what i have so far...

i kinda feel my model is too big tho; as if its too tall cuz i can't get the size of the entrance to look correct. i have a 6' biped in the right-corner of the church in the first image for size comparison if anyone has any tips...

If you are thinking about selling you should have a look at this:

http://freetextures.3dtotal.com/index.php?la=1

If I understand correctly you can sell models that use these photo's as long as they are modified for the meshes.

Congratulations winners...!

Would it be possible when announcing the winners to provide a link to their entries? It would be nice to quickly see them without having to go through pages of submissions to admire the winning entry.

i promised myself i'd post more and join any challenge i could--wish i had more than a couple days to work on this--so i decided to finish this up, regardless...

so here's my stuff; just a screengrab and renders. the huge, individual renders near the bottom have a hi(gher?) rez than the collage used for the competition. i had fun doing this project and decided to make it look pretty!

Hey,
I'm extremely new to this program. I did this for a class, and wanted some feedback. I'm not educated in how to use sub-objects yet, and so did this mostly to learn about the basic shapes of objects and understand the relationship of one object in a scene to another. This also exemplified the concept of using triangles and using only so many. I'm not really sure what type of feedback I'm looking for, but any tips or suggestions as well as critiques would be nice. Thanks

i am wondering the something , i have been checking for a while now is this weekly as in every week or weekly as in a week long thing once a month or something ?

each competition is only a week long but sometimes it takes a while for the next one to start up. They usually have to find pictures from the reference library--they create themselves--for the next challenge. other challenges start faster than earlier, so just check back every week...that's what i do

if you want you could start from the beginning and do all the previous challenges. it'll be something to do while you wait :)

Can someone come in and suggest a new challange? Perhaps even provide references. Would that be helpfull?

maybe we could look through the references and try to find something that could be used for the next challenge. i think the problem may stem from the fact that we use the references provided for the textures. since its a photo modeling challenge, everyone is using the same material (and textures) to re-create the image.

If we provide the reference, we would need to provide the textures as well to keep the comp balanced between all parties. I do like that idea of yours...tho i'm pretty bad at picking stuff like that

if you guys can find an image set, or make one of your own, I'll hook yall up with a place to duke it out. Just give me a heads up or a pm.

i was going to find one from free high-res ref and texture library but i keep getting(The page you are looking for is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later.) so if anyone have another resource to go through let me know or we just have to wait until its back up again .

This used to be my favorite places of all, now i hardly find any reason to come back to it just because of the delays and laziness in competition and other stuff, many times i post things for weeks i dont even get a single reply.
i used to write 'Threedy' forever. :ugh:

i understand what you mean. i used to come here at lot to view and comment on pplz work but it has slowed to a crawl. ppl hardly update their work or show anything anymore...i just recently started competing in competitions with this entry and wanted to learn/do more but that's when everything seemed to stop

Yes i moved from these forums over to Turbosquid, i sell my models online and people there give real opinion, unlike here where ppl just want to SEE awesome work but never help you improve or update.

We will see what we can do, we have put a lot of time and money into the main site over the last 12 months. Some new challenges have just started to (organized by very dedicated volunteers I might add) and we have plans to boost the forums this year also.

cheers

Tom

Congrats to the winners! I see a lot of ppl got involved on this contest.

I'd love to see something from my city modelled by you guys, I can provide better references images but just so you can get an idea:
