The Challenge Rules

1). Each challenge we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modeling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief can be removed and the poster disqualified.

2). You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified.

3). Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like and must include a clear and easy to see wireframe of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Wire renders/ Cell Shaded or Screengrab wireframes are acceptable. Any wireframes we cannot see correctly will be disqualified. The key is for us to be able to see the wireframes clearly to ascertain how you modelled the subject matter.

4). You MUST include the following details with each submission:

A). Software used
B). Time spent creating the model.

Any further information is voluntary but posts not containing the required information can be removed and the poster disqualified.

5). Post TWO images per entry which must be no larger than 1280x1024 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 195k.
1 image for your wireframes and 1 for your clay combined with a optional beauty render.
These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page.
Do not link to external images files. Images larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials)
will be removed and the poster disqualified.

6). The creation of displacement maps, normal maps and any splines drawn out in an external program other than your modeling software are to be included in your modeling time.

7). Time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the allocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post it as long as it's recognizable.

8). Posting the same entry twice in a challenge is considered to be double posting and will result in a disqualification. When asked to fix a previous post due to DQ or any other reason, you must fix the first post, or delete it altogether and create a new one.

9). The Winner must email jo@3dtotal.com to claim their prize.

10). Only 1st place & 2nd place (i.e. the runner up) can claim a prize.

These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions!

Nice, I was wondering when there would be another SMC.

I think the hardest part about this one is deciding what to throw on the lunchbox ;)

ClassicGamer-3DT
04-03-2011, 12:48 PM
Yeah, I had the same predicament. They are deceptive though, they can have some tricky geometry to get right, my entry was quick. I nearly made some lunch to go with it, but struggled to model sandwhiches so just did the thermos flask & lunchbox :)

I'm looking forward to seeing what you create Aramor :)

Kind Regards,

CG.

p.s.

is it tru that this challenge wont have Tshirts (for now atleast?)

Neil_F01

does it have to be a kiddies lunch box... i was thinking more about a coal mine workmans lunch box myself.. is this acceptable..

hulahuga
04-03-2011, 12:56 PM
Hah, we don't have lunch boxes here in Sweden!

Would love to see some fun interpretations of this, let's see if we can't make a lunch box from space or something :D

Meh, I love underestimating a challenge. It makes for quite a nice surprise ;)

I'm looking forward to seeing what you create Aramor :)

Thanks. I think I'm going for either Jurassic Park or Fallout. I think it'll be JP though, since that was the first thing that popped into my mind when I saw the word lunchbox.

ClassicGamer-3DT
04-03-2011, 01:39 PM
OK in answer to your questions.

No T-Shirts for now at least.
It will be downloadable content only.......... however a new addition to the downloadable content is the texture CD's which were the original SMC prize.

You can model ANY kind of lunchbox, be it a children's, builder's, workman's, alien's whatever.....AND..... if you can model the contents of lunch in the hour aswell you can do that too.

A quick search on google will present you with many many different styles, some in rucksack form, others just simple tubs and containers....... as it says in the rules, how you interpret the subject is up to you.

Now go get modelling :)

ClassicGamer-3DT
04-03-2011, 01:41 PM
Damnit CG... that starter render looks amazing. I gotta get my hands on AR3 :(

Yeah a very simple render too, just 2 softboxes, 1 overhead softbox and a HDRI for reflections and the glorious AR3 GI.

I might make another entry................ and the best thing is guys & gals I can't win

04-03-2011, 01:51 PM

Woohoo!

Aramor
04-03-2011, 02:14 PM
Oh, I thought we were supposed to make a separate topic for our Work In Progress's or something...

Well then, here's the models, after about 45 minutes. I think they're okay for now, so I'm going to go texture them and voila.

Edit: finished it.

ClassicGamer-3DT
04-03-2011, 02:45 PM
Not a bad starter there Aramor, but remember you need to have two separate composited images of 1280x1024, 1 for beauty shots/renders 1 for wireframes and any clay renders, please edit your post. Each composition of 1280x1024 will showacse your entry much better with bigger wireframes and beauty shots etc. Look at my starter for how it should be composited. :) If you make another post with the updated composites inside you need to edit the first post or delete the post entirely.

You'll need software used & time taken to model the scene included too please, otherwise you'll be disqualified.

As for you model you're on the right track, I think you could chamfer the handles a bit more and maybe knife cut some more points in to soften the corners of the handles. As you've mentioned you're 45 mins in so you've a good 15 mins left to add/modify your scene.

hulahuga
04-03-2011, 02:48 PM
CG - Didn't he say he is going to texture them? That means it is not finished yet and that this probably won't be his final... ;)

ClassicGamer-3DT
04-03-2011, 02:52 PM
CG - Didn't he say he is going to texture them? That means it is not finished yet and that this probably won't be his final... ;)

Yep, but we're not allowing double posts or more, otherwise there would be multiple versions of the same one entry. Only submit the entry when it's finished, the competition is not a work in progress thread.

HOWEVER

If you have modelled your scene and submitted it and a day or so later you decided to re-render & texture the scene then again, edit or delete the post and upload the new composition.

Either way, by all means multiple entries.... but not multiple renders/compositions of the same single entry ok...... Cool :)

Aramor
04-03-2011, 02:58 PM
Ah sorry, I'll fix it when I have it finished then.

So, no more WIP threads as well or?

Oh, I always thought wips were alright, seems I was wrong. But are illustrated questions and such about the modeling allowed?

Yes, encouraged actually..... when I first started out on these SMC's (before Modship) I was always helping members out and they were helping me out too, I still say I learnt a good 80% of modelling knowledge from participating in these challenges....... and everyone models in a different way so there's always new ways to achieve the same model(s) :)

Hey! Here is my entry, I found it on google, I think in India they call this type of lunchbox a Tiffin.

I would like to make another one, as I saw one that really interested me, but I think is way more complicated that this one, so I think I wouldn't be able to finish under 60 minutes. But anyway, I don't know if I even will be able to give it a try, I have lots of work this week. I'll try at least to keep an eye to see your great entrys!

Good luck to everyone and happy modelling!

Cg-Nice entry man, your modelling is as good as always, but you seem to make even more realistic renders!

Neil- Nice entry as well! I think you have some unnecesary polygons(triangles) at the top though.

Scrat -Cool entry, I like a lot the twisted glass and the donut shaped case, nice detailing on the edges. As you have 30 minutes left, you could even model the donut!

Silverflame- A killer entry as I expected, I almost did that same model too. Because it has some interesting shapes to practice subd. Render looks ace as well, I like the chromatic aberration you put on it. Did you use xoliul's shader on the viewport? Look awesome.

ClassicGamer-3DT

Thanks, yeh it has some interesting shapes. Nah i didnt use xoliuls shader, its just a simple grey mat with some spec.

Pables Nice tiffin, i'v actually got one bought it a few years ago when they were fashionable but never used it, but i digress, very clean modelling, love the details like the clips has a nice sense that its made from thin metal

04-03-2011, 11:40 PM
You can have as many entries as you want Neil, but it has to be totally new (you can't use parts of previous models).

CG- Thats a cool entry again, really like it, it would be ace if the grapes had some sub surface statering.

Bed time for me now haha.

Whee! New SMCs!

I have modeled old military lunchbox I have found in my new appartemnt. It's pretty hawt, so I made it. I got slow :-( Need to speed up

Btw: I used very basic shader instead of clay renders. I use it all the time, since it makes the details (and flaws) pop out more so I think it's better than pure clay renders. But it can be changed if it's not up the rules

Another entry, a "boxed" lunch of sorts, very difficult to get the nuggets and fries textured right, still need alot of work but they are shader based, not actual textures used other than the happy meal logo. Just felt like modelling something again :)

I love this just because the mc nuggets looks just as fake and stale looking/tasting just like the real ones at mc D's. Good work.

Antor - lovely render and modelling, I think the grapes and the bread look great from the top but the sides aren't great, I ran into the same problems myself when I tried bread. The apple slices need more smoothing or subdivision to make them look less blocky. But I really love the SSS/dispersed lunchbox material very nice indeed.

Neil_F01 - You managed it yay! Not a bad attempt at all, although there's some places I would have tried to keep an all quads layout..... but still kudos on getting in modelled in time :) But i'm afraid you need to sort your two composites out no larger than 1280x1024 please

Neil I had a look at ur R2D2 box its good but I found some errors in the mesh, there only small (or I screwed up the import into Maya). Just thought I might point it out if u ever decide to UV map it it would be an absolute pain in the ass. :wall:

Neil_F01
08-03-2011, 12:40 PM
thats an import thing.. i dont have glitches like that... the max file was too large.. for some reason..

my best guess is that on the import.. the internal verts on the shell modifier meshed up and made some funky doodie glitches..

and no i would never map this...

yeah most likey..

to some extent it is just a shame i ran out of time.. i mean as classic said there is still some cleaning up to do with making quads and what not..

but you asked for a hard edged model.. and thats what i did for ya... i swear i must have took 45 mins at least just building the front pannel.. the rest of it is a complete slop together job.. i could have done with like 90 mins maybe to finish the project completely and clean up the mesh..

hopefully it should be good enough to win somehting.. fingers crossed huh..

is it 60mins with modeling, texturing and rendering?

rocneasta
08-03-2011, 10:30 PM
60 min for modeling - texturing and rendering isn't calculated in the time limit, and you can spend what ever amount of time you want on those two things - basically they are not mandatory - it's all about the speed modeling, getting the point across in as little time as possible

Psycho Mantis
08-03-2011, 10:31 PM

rocneasta

i hope i'll have time to texture my other models that i have planned for this - but working 10 hours a day in the office without a chance to model - then driving to the restaurant twice a day to eat, results in little time to devote to texturing process

Neil_F01
09-03-2011, 09:15 AM
nice entry rocneasta.. liked it..

but where is your clay render.. you only have beauty and wire.. i thought we had to have all three..

rocneasta
09-03-2011, 09:27 AM
i did clay with wires showing - it's a multisub material with one as wire and other as clay - i think it shows better the wires (i did use it before and no one objected)

if there's a problem with it i can always change it - since clay is always used to show the way things were modeled i think additional wire on it gives more clarity

ClassicGamer-3DT
09-03-2011, 10:15 AM
Clay & beauty shots are optional, most do one or the other or both (I like to do both) but we have to have clear wireframes :) But you might aswell have clay renders as they showcase the model (detailing wise) much better than some beauty shots (sometimes)

rocneasta

Thanks pables - i learnt alot from this entry - using swiftloop is quicker than edge - ring - connect & making a model which length i can adjust by symmetry modifier is a smart thing to do :)

rocneasta
10-03-2011, 07:33 AM
another ancient Chinese lunch box - missing ornaments around the handle if you compare it to a reference. (too much work and it's more of a zbrush task than max (looking at time management ofc))

I aimed to achieve that ancient worn out look, cracks etc, but a refurbished wood feel - a mix of old and new. Ofc textures can always be redone to fit the more ancient look - these are just A&D slapped together in seconds

pables
10-03-2011, 08:21 AM
Roc, I use max 2008 (and Modo), so, not sure if it has swiftloop:hurt:, but why is it faster?

I use shortcuts so I can do a ring-selection and connect in barely 2 seconds. I personally use alt-r +shift-c very handy.

About the symmetry modelling its really a smart thing to do, I always try to model only the necessary parts, can be 1/2, 1/4, 1/6 and so on, depending on the piece, and then apply axis or radial symmetry. I think that's the key to speed-model things.

Nice chinese lunchbox man, but I think the other one looks a bit better(at least the modelling)

yea the previous model is way better modeling wise, and alot more detailed than the later one - but it's the nature of the object it self :)

about swiftloop let me demonstrate :p

red thing marks the placement of mouse so he can determine where to add the loop... and you just click away (swiftloop is a part of graphite modeling arsenal of tools)

basic workflow is select an edge > ring > connect. select another edge > ring > connect. With swiftloop you just do the clicking and it does everything automatically...

pables
10-03-2011, 09:24 AM
Thanks mate, seems like a nice tool, I think Modo 501 and Blender have that same tool.

Just ring - connect for me now:ugh:

rocneasta
10-03-2011, 09:38 AM

as for this model.. its ok.. its shows obviously that your only beginning in the world of 3d
so i'll try and be gentle..

how long are you into 3d? its not bad for that, but one can clearly see that you are using basic primitives. what school are you into, that they give 3dt smc´s for homework. this school rocks!

yeah wish my school had this stuff for homework. .that would have been awesome..

goooooo gooooo chopsticks !!!

This model took me by surprise, i expected an easy modeling task, and in a nutshell it is, but i experienced odd behaviour when connecting lines of topology, so i needed to collapse the stack more often than usual to get it to work... Ough well, used up all the time for this one, fairly simple and easy, but a lot of supporting edges for Turbosmooth to work with :)

Hey,
This is only my second post to this site, or any like it. I did this as part of a school class. Our assignment was this challenge. If possible, I would like some feedback on what I've done; but I know everyone is busy trying to finish. Thank you.

Hi!, yeah we can see you are learning about that magnificent word.. and that´s a good choice... Welcome aboard!
So, you can continue by chamfer all your edges for a better finish. Also you can make a plane and turn on the omni shadows to cast some shadows if you want.
PS: You should change the background color, full black is not very good.

Here is my second entry. Thought that this box would be modelled as one as the firsts..but nope, so i did it :)

Hope all relevant info is on the picture. Keep it up, good luck every one

Any particular issues in the mesh that made you model it for 59 min, or you took your time with the model. The mesh is clean, don't get me wrong, but just wondering.

believe me, i have my timer next to my pc. and when i was finished i luckily had 30 seconds left. think whatever you think, i have no need to lie for these challenges.

Sometimes it's nice to get a simple shaped modelled right, in the past i've used the full time limit to model something fairly simplistic and just been pleased with having nailed the design easily and taken my time to create it :)

I'm working on the starter textures for tommorow night's SMC at the moment........ I hate texturing but it's something you gotta do to try and showcase your models nicely :(

when compared to the time it takes to model something it's such a pain.

btw did anyone ever figure out how to texture (UVW) something with precision - let's say packaging etc. Or is it still just a matter or S.S.S. (scale, stretch and stitch)

Psycho Mantis
10-03-2011, 09:30 PM
nope, and unwrapping sux.. i´m just starting to do it. except working with quadmodels, i dont see a way to get the job done nicely

rocneasta
10-03-2011, 09:42 PM
but even with quads he gives you results that are to say the least funny, from 6 same quads he'll give you 4 the same and 2 enlarged etc :p I'm over the technical side of things up to a point ofc, but the way it's designed is silly - you work in units (whether you know them or you'll just pulling egdes to some coordinate value) and then he calculates those coords by giving you a rough sketch...

bah, gonna take a shower, shave, cut my hair - and go back to modeling... SMC'd 4 life!

Psycho Mantis
10-03-2011, 09:45 PM
select the quads, and if possible, panar map them. and then just relx the sh!t out of them. or - load the texture in the editor, and drag the vertices to your needs.

S.S.S. (scale, stretch and stitch)

never stretch, never...what I sometimes use is flatten map and stitch everything, relax at the end, keeping the same ratio for each island, or for more organic models, I use RoadKill

Once you know how to uv, it's just awesome trying to figure out how to pack everything, as a puzzle

rocneasta
10-03-2011, 10:27 PM
never did relax on an inorganic model? does it work well?

Wow this is gonna be so hard to judge!

From a purely modelling point of view, the mario lunchbox is technically the most impressive geometry i've seen this challenge. And the render is pretty sweet, it's not gonna be easy for me!

About texturing: I managed to do some packaging texture work quite well recently, I had some sachets & a box in which to contain them and as they were basic shapes, I made the UV's flat in bodypaint and then went to work in photoshop, I had a couple of lines and such that weren't matching up which I had to tweak a couple of times but it finally worked out ok. I think anything more complex or different shapes and i'd struggle though. It's a whole other beast UV mapping in which I really should learn..... but i'm happier to struggle with layered shaders and occasional basic textures for the time being lol. I think you really need to be interested in UV mapping and texturing that way and obviously if you can do it right it's very very rewarding as your models/scenes look incredible, but this & organic modelling are still foreign languages to me.

How would you guys think about a voting system for the challenges?

All you would need to do is reply with 1st & 2nd place winners..... for 1st place please award them with 2 points, 2nd place 1 point and we judge the challenge that way.

Think that would be fair?

The only other rules would be that only those that entered the challenge can vote and they can only cast their votes once.

astroAJ

There's so many entries, its going to take ages to sift through them all. 3D total should have a similar poll thing to that of cghub.com if any of u guys have seen it.

Its still a good idea though CG :)

It would be great to get a new thread where all entries are in, just beneath each other. And only members who entered can give one vote for first and second place.
That would make sure for fast voting and accurate results.
Super mario will win.

Yes, a thumbnail kind of gallery (or some thread with just all entries) would be great as an overview!

I'm quite confident in the judges, so the public voting isn't a must if you ask me. If we go for public voting

the judging was left to ClassicGamer and not up to votes, double posting would really complicate things if some competitors wouldn't manage time to post - i know ClassicGamer he's downloading the entries and making notes of the ones that stand out, so i would leave it to him.

that being said i fear that voting is on personal bonds and mesh topology quality would often be overlooked, beauty shots would affect the voting etc. Best leave it as attended in the start of SMC's

btw i doodled another entry :)

God i'm so glad SMC's are back:dance::dance::dance:

yeah i'm up for a voting system.. i think a fair system of judging to be honnest..

i mean.. i could make a bagging model.. but if you didnt like me personnally regardless of how good my model i wouldnt win..

so i have always prefered the voting system.. granted this is gonna be a pig f*cker to judge.. so many cool entries..

and are we not voting for 1st 2nd and 3rd.. i know 3rd only wins a little badge thing.. but hell i want a badge.. lol

Neil_F01
11-03-2011, 10:03 AM
and yeah i like the way some of the others do it... in that you have on thread for the comp while it running so people can post what they like..

i also think that you really should say that your only allowed one final entry...

i mean it used to run that way that you could make as many entries as you liked.. but at the end of the comp you had to choose which one of your entries was gonna be the final entry the one that gets judged..

Neil_F01
11-03-2011, 10:06 AM
persoanly i dont believe the mario man took an hour... personally.. i mean have you ever tried to make a zip system like that.. it takes ages.. and i'm a pretty fast modeller..

rocneasta
11-03-2011, 10:08 AM
i also think that you really should say that your only allowed one final entry...

i think this alone would kill the SMC's

it's about quick modeling and getting your skills up, more than a competition and deciding on which final model to choose to post...

Ofc i remember a time where two awards were awarded to one person, just because there were a lack of entries and SMC lasted a week as this one :)

Neil_F01
11-03-2011, 10:09 AM
then instead of only 1 entry.. perhaps your only allowed 3...

it would still mean that someone good enough could win all three... but it would also give everyone else a fighting chance still.. lol..

I dunno fellas, i might strike you as a crazy person, but I can't describe how happy i am with these SMC's. Alone they are a huge motivation to me, and i've devoted every last second of my time to it. My laptop went to the restaurant lunch and dinner so i could render things and not be falling behind.

rocneasta, yeah maybe you are right. The thing is just, that when CG is doing it alone, with this lot of entries it takes a while to vote. That was the problem of the last smc´s they where like 2 months behind or something.
I agree that when the "public" can vote, mostly beauty shots will be considered, and not the modeling time/modeling quality ratio..

It would be great if some could team up with CG and help voting.

Back then CG had bad teeth now it's all good :)

but yea him teaming up with another 3DT staff member would prove beneficial, If we disregard the fact that they can not see eye to eye on the winning ones :)

***** brainfart ****

@ ClassicGamer: If you think it would be of use to you or help in any way (and in no way affect your judging subjectively) i can devote a bit of my time to download all entries and place then in a pdf so you can view page by page all the entries (each page would consist of all the shots provided)

i did offer at the beginning.. actually found it quite humerous, in that i emailed bigtoe on like a tuesday and then like on the friday it was announched that the SMC would return..

to me i dont care about the winning.. i just enjoy taking part... having my models slashed apart by others so that i can better my skills and make my day to day life of modelling easier in the long run..

but i did find it funny on one side of the fence you had that group moaning about getting the smcs back.. and the other side of the fence you had me saying i want them back i dont care if i cant enter them.. i'd happily run the damn thing..

but i think the voting system is the best way forward... and no i dont think the beauty shots are gonna be the winning one.. as this is a modelling comp..

(granted in this one,, most people have put together some real sex beatuy shots, along with some real tidy modelling..)..
