I would also like to put in the default whine that the delays on delays are somewhat...disheartening. Even though I KNOW it doesn't really matter that much...I was looking forward to just getting on it...

That said, and my heart welded together by a .03 weld vertex threshold...I shall now go onto say we should have a post pre dominance war competition pre dominance war :)

Something to vent our anger until it eventually does show up. So...say, a 1-2 hour model in the program of your choice...make it look angry :) If its not up by tomorrow, thats tomorrows goal for me. Post a 800x600 image here to rev up those 3D engines...or something.

Let's face it guys, this will be the last Dom War so we need to go out guns mutha ****en blazin and help 3dtotal, polycount and cgtalk create the next big challenge after this one.

About 7 years ago Threedy hosted a challenge sponsored by boxx to make a robot and it was off the hook. It was one of the defining moments early on in my learning process that really got my hooked on hard surface so myself and hopefully many of you can worth together to make something work.

Being in Japan myself (Osaka thankfully), I don't know what to make of jokes about it...being Australian...meh :) whatever. Humour is a way to deal with most things...as much as it does suck. Seeing as Dominance does seem to have a general 'theme' with winning entries...is there any chance people have managed to compile a good list or artists, sites that seem to portray the kind of stuff that goes with the flow?

As much as I like my super toony character style I always have going, you can guarantee its never going to win first place...if anything simply cos the technical skill to make a toon is far less than say, a demon from the 7th level of heaven.

My sister in law is half Japanese, I called her mom last night (who lives on Long Island, NY) She said that the family is all fine and they were able to call at 5 am yesterday morning. They didn't know about the house in the mountains, because at this time of year it is too cold to go up there.

I must admit that I did think the cause of the Earthquake may have been the delay of DW5, then the second delay was very strangely coincided with the Tsunami. Normally I don't give into conspiracy theories (yea, right), so I would consider this to be a mere coincidence.

Then I started thinking about the other stories, such as the downing of the 5,000 crows last month (a leadup perhaps?) and the million sardines that washed into a harbor just last week..,

...or even the car I saw while driving into school yesterday with one sign on the door that said "Medical Transportation" while having another sign on the roof that proclaimed "Carrying School Children"...

...it all gets one thinking about the real cause of the melting reactor...

No that difficult to be honest. It's about a team, decent communication and not overpromising and under delivering.

If I were going to set up a proper compo, i'd get networking before I even mentioned it. then get some decent sponsors and agree in no uncertain terms, prizes scope of help etc form them, then go to the communities.

Start small and go from there.

To be honest, if you piggy back indy game dev on the back of a compo then you could make a decent business, if you can set it up right to ensure participants don't get ripped off.

the PC TF2 compo is a good example. Those that won got paid royalties. So the knack is to tie into a brand, IP or game and look for the scope.

Hell even make a game ala Project Top Secret but with less debate and more direction.

I would say that many of us would be willing to help Fred get this awesome comp off the ground even if it were to be the last one.

As for PC, while I've not always understood their demeanor, I do respect their decision and feel that the thread did a proper job at dissolving their commitment.

@Amblin: yes, I wouldn't even think of making such an announcement until I was ready to launch and had all the ducks lined up. I also feel that limiting the contest to what i feel are the four main forums would help keep things in order. I also had the same thought today about piggy backing the contest with an IP.

That said, it would require a great deal of planning so that only money used for such an endeavor came from business investment and not from the pocket of the creator.

...but that's another world entirely.

Here's hoping that BigToe is able to help Fred get this thing rolling.

There's more to it than just the typical start up delays.

It took over a year to announce the Unearthly Challenge winners and I think some of the winners of DW2 and 3 are still waiting for their prizes. That's disrespectful to keep people in limbo that long and damaging to the creditability of the contest. The prizes never matter to any serious competitor and every winner always said "thanks but I can do without these, its just fluff". Prizes have been the single most important thing that has caused delays and sunk DW year after year. If they don't matter why have them? If you offer them, you should deliver in a timely manor. Don't promise things you can't deliver.

The lack of communication, every year we have to rely on rumors rather than straight up posts. You would think DominanceWar.com would be the place to get the latest breaking news but its normally some back water thread on GA posted on behalf of fred, or a rumor winding its way around that fred finally steps out from behind the curtain and says "yea what you think has been happening for the last 4-5 days/weeks is true". The lack of accepting help when so many people are offering it. It is also disheartening to see those kind of opportunities slip away. It's too much for one guy, ok I get it, then say yes to people offering help.

I won't even bring up the judging and then subsequent rejudging of the Comic Con challenge on top of delays. oops just did...

How about the changing of the rules after the fact so rights to images posted belong to GA and can be sold to help support GA. Sign up under specific terms, then under the cover of darkness the rules change. When asked about it the answer is "screw em if they don't like it tough, drop out". "Whats the reason?" "screw you I'm not saying" "ok what do we tell the angry wall of artists?" "I said tough tacos, tell em that" "ok..."

It's always been a bit weird how tight GA is tied to DW, it should of broken off long ago but instead it still uses large chunks of GA and with the opaque way things get handled it casts doubts on the ability of DW to stand on its own. So DW supports GA and no matter what happens GA wins financially but prizes and judging gets screwed over? Other forums pour their time and talent into the competition, other forums have huge spikes in bandwidth to cover because of DW do they see any compensation? Nope...

Fred's internet is out, ok I can cut the guy some slack disasters happen, but the system is only set up to be controlled by one person from one location? Wow... Shouldn't there be some kind of remote setup like 99% of sites with multiple people able to jump in and help out?

I can understand this stuff happening the first year, even the second year but on the 5th after a shut down and reboot of the contest system? Come on... have some respect for the people entering. A lot of people try to re-plan their lives around this stuff so they can take part, stop jerking them around. :wall:

No matter how this plays out, my only wish is to take part in a challenge where i can push my skills in friendly competition against talented artists worldwide. Be it DW or something put together by Threedy.

One of my personal interest in the DW contest it's that the challenge evolve between different forums, that's one of the important part for me.

well, all I'll say is I'm a little disappointed by how people have reacted to the whole situation. As much as I realise there's lots of back story I seem to have missed or don't seem to care about nearly as much as a lot of people...DW is all about being able to have a competitive yet helpful competition to improve everyone's skill. Whats a week t countless improvements to technique and good natured fun.

One of DW's draw points is the fact that, being a forum based 'war' you get a lot of help and are able to develop your skills with an army behind you while at the same time have an army of people you are very competitive AGAINST you that you want to crush into a ****** pulp. From what I understand there are not that many competitions that share that same level of scope.

And personally, just so you know, I hate the word 'pulp'.

As much as Fred's planning skills could be improved perhaps, at least he's created such a competition in the first place and that get kudos from me.

What you do is your concern. You have your reasons for doing what you do and I wish you all the best, and I HOPE that all this hasn't put a dampener on the end competition for those that are still keen to join.

Good luck to those that stick through all this. Hopefully Fred doesn't just can the whole thing cos of all the haters! I know I'd be considering it.

That said, bring it on. Take another hour, take another month...it doesn't matter to me. All that really matters is learning what I can amongst others of like mind...

I once offered to help out a friend with a fair bit of cg work for free and gave him a deadline.. After the initial offer some personal stuff came up and I had to significantly delay. My friend, although a little bit dissapointed understood.
When it came time for the second delay I still had heaps of **** going on, so much in fact that I just didn't want to deal with the situation so I started to ignore the problem all together.
My email was starting to fill up with a lot of emails from the guy but I basically said **** it and never contacted him again, I was too pissed that I didn't have time to finish what I started and because of not being open with him in the first place let the problems build up for my friend.
Even though what I was doing for him was free, he was still pissed off and RIGHTFULLY so, he built HIS timeline around the information I gave him ...

Would you say kudos to me if I finished off that job and gave it to him a year late?

Personally I think I was a dick for acting that way and probably should have just bit the bullet and admitted I took on more than I could chew.
