A long long time ago.in time when people still believed in gods. a time when gods had power over human.
a time of great wars and great heros. a time when every one thought that there is nothing to fear.But...... they were wrong.
wery wrong. little by little , a great evil started to gain strength. it has grown bigger by every day, by every scream, by every fight.
it was born from the blood, sweat, bones and fear of people that died in battles.
one day this evil has grown big and strong enough to threaten the world and gods. suffering, pain and death came where he went, leaving not a single
drop of life. Gods and heros tried to stop it alone but they could not defet it. so one day they gathered all in one place and stood in a battle against
this vast amount of evil power. the battle was epic, but evil was tamed and chained in the dungeons of tartarus behind a thousand doors, gates and locks.
it was guarded by elite wariors of gods and the hell dog cerberus.
thus the evil stayed calm and waited.
more that thousands of years past and some gods disapeared, some got weak. people forgot about the achient powers that lie below their world.
But the evil waited patiently and kept track of what was going on in the world. and now its 2011 and the evil has grown stronger then ever due to past wars and all
the hate and violence in the world. and he broke from the antient dungeon. and now its rising from the deeps to the surface of earth to claim what is his and to finish

ofcourse i have allready thought out the base concept of it and have it on paper but it needs lots of refinement :) .

so had a little rest from work and wrote a base story for this good. sory for gramar and i will fix it latter in progres.

thanks washka. well this one should be big. i hope all the details will fit in to 12k cause the character in scale is like 10 meters high and with lots of details and acsesories like human souls trying to escape from his body and lots of armor ranging from prehistoric ages to sci-fi. and ofcourse if there will be time an poly's left i'll make him a bad a55 dildo firing weapon :D .

ok. here i go :) . had a efw minutes to get in the mood and watched some awsome monster art from awsome artist like grasseti, tsvetsimor gregoriev and alex oliver.
first sketch of this god. it'll be something in betvien human and a beast. something as evil as can get. it'll have lots of war and torture atributes . as for other details - it'll be a sick amount of them and i'll try to push it to gears of war qualitie . and i'm trying to wonder if 12k polys will be enough for this beast :D . well, time will show :) .
more sketches to come cause i have a few more ideas.

crits and coments are more than welcome :)

number 2 looks slightly front heavy try extending his arms so they hold him up on the front

liquidbear - thanks. well it will have fron legs like a mixture of gorilla arms and t-rex feet and it will be in armor. they will be more in front. this was a fast few minute sketch and i got lazy to fix this issue :) .

Be careful about the souls trying to escape from his back. It will mean lots of geometry. You can be smart and have one of two actually pushing halfway through his back and others can be just pushing his skin so that there is little extra geometry compared to having all souls as half bodies. Just and idea, though.

mix_mash - thanks for suggestion, but i allready have thought out this issue. i made more souls trying to push through just for visual efect. most of them as you said will just streatch the skin giving the form of their face in agony.

thanks guys for replies. the second picture fits the direction i am going to and now i'll start modeling - lots of sculpting awaits me :)

i'll post a base mesh when i'll do it :)

liquidbear - thanks man. i wanted to do a flesh type, but now that you mentioned the rocky skin i might grab this idea from you and combine it with flesh - this would give it way more detail cause skin details are so booring and cliche now days and rock skin would give it more originalitie.

about this rockafactation - under bely would not be good cause there will be another mouth and other armor parts. i think of this rockafactation in his legs and arms and in part of tail and back and some on chest combined with some glow maps.

Well, "way to low poly" is only relative to the scale of the god. If the god is huge, then little hands on alpha cards would work just fine. If the god is medium sized...and the hands pretty sizable to him, then I agree, alpha cards would be too low. You'll have to see what works once you get that awesome high poly made.

so took a tablet and made a first session to the head. only trying to find the best shape for it and get it as violent as posible :) . allready make some basic hard surface shapes to define where some armor parts will go and where not to put any details :)

so had a little fast sculpt on the torso. some proportions are off - i'll fix them in next session tomorrow . just trying to put main shapes and to move some polys to places where more details should be.
and due to my time limit on this project i'll work on separate parts at the time to cep this interesting to my self :)

Nice to see your progress. But you should do thinking about mucle functionality too. Chest muscle sitting there and doing nothing - just big blob. Those visible neck muscles should connet to skull.... I know, you just roughing main shapes there and fix all that later. So, I'm just a reminder. :)

about chest muscles they realy do nothing and for now not wery coretly placed. but part of them will not be visible. as for neck muscles they are put there just for fun. all neck will bee in armor so latter there will be no use of these muscles.

so here is a first update on girls face. about half an hour modeling. i dont realy care about topology at this stage cause it will be sculpted and projected to the main bodie so just making the base mesh and puting features where they belong.

You may want to mess around with the idea of adding a little more animal influence in the shape of the lower arm-legs. In particular, try pulling them back in a lower push-up like position and add animal like scapula in there.

I think it would make look a bit more functional. Right now it looks like all he can do is use the muscle in his arms to drag himself forward. Not the most practical way to get around ;). If you want to keep it that way though, those limbs would need to be far thicker and bigger. It's a lot of mass to carry around, even with help from the tail.

hi mate. i know that this face is jus as mask or sort of some face pointing out of cretre. but still. it needs more dinamics and shape. for now i think ur face is way too flat.
and one sugestion from me. try to make tha fece trying to get out of creature. so pull out more head and make bether expression:) good luck

They just want to make sure more than 1 person is not doing the work. They fully expect us to critique each other.

Yes gestis, that is the whole idea of forum teams. If it was like that (it would be the same in previous DomWars too) it would be just one site, forums would have no importance and colors would be meaningless.

What it means is no direct collaboration. Such as: one does the sketch and tones the other does color or the one does the model the other does the textures. We are talking about the final here. Paintovers are just another form of communication. If you can describe what washka did with words please go ahead I would love to see you try.

I'm trying to give him some good advice for the proportions of the body and the head.
I'm also giving him some tracks for the concept, hoping he would get some good inspiration from it, so he can maybe make a better work, but you know Paulius has already a lot of skills, it may very well do without it.

Yeah those are my skills, yeah I share those. Why?

Critics, any kind of critics, are based on your own skills, on your approach of the image, can you deny that?
So yes, I'm trying to give him some help like with those.

So now read this gestis:
If the threads would be closed to outer opinion I wouldn't make DW, because I couldn't improve myself by the critics of other people.
And you're wrong about the rules, this forum is a team.
It doesn't mean I'll make Paulius's work in his place.
Can I come to paintover your turtle god now?

Oh yeah, and a last thing you should think about man: when you do a critic onto another work, it means you have to analyze it, and think about the changes =you= would make. I do not appropriate his work, but doing that I improve my own approach of the image building. It's not just one sided.

The whole "no teams" aspect of the comp was put in place because the winner of Dwar 2 (Taehoon Oh with 3DT!) had his concepts done by another artist...and that guy did an insane amount of concepts and look development for the character, to the point where you think it was meant to be the lead design in a film.

It's simply not possible for 99% of the people involved in DWar to get concepts of that high quality if they don't have a dedicated concept artist, so they had to shut that down with the "no teams" rule.

so did some fixes to the face. i looked in to my reference pictures and the overpaint that washka did and fixes her lips, eyes and other features of the face to look more real and less flat . washka's overpaint was wery usefull, thanks again man :).
and i sticked the picture of the expresion i want to capture for this face. it will be streatching from the stomack of the god.

hmmm, some interesting facts: when searching for reference i typed words "screaming girl" and 1/3 of the results was J. Bieber :hmm:

about the lower arms/feet i'm thinking of redoint them and makinf them look more like liquidbear suggested - rock arms , and i will pose them to a pose of aligators legs.
and i'm thinking of a aditional mesh. something like minions or gargoyls or other flying things that are chained to its arms or other body part. but its just a thought.

Why do you keep that huge pinch there in the middle of the face? You should have done an all quad base :D

In my personal opinion, the lower lips are huge.

yeah, now when i look at the lip it realy looks too big at this point of progress, but it is fixed allready :) . i have posed the face and now taking a break for copoul of minutes or hours to later look at it with a fresh look.

Why do you keep that huge pinch there in the middle of the face? You should have done an all quad base :D


cause it has no efect to the final image and when i was making a base mesh it was faster for me to stick a triangle there and ceep the mesh as low as posible while maintaining the proportions of the reference face. this mesh of the girls face will be scraped or retopologysed and finalysed and put to my library once i project it to the main body.
basicly its my way of thinking - geting the result as fast as posible and not going further to unimportant details.

edit: here is the image of face pose. i will refine it in the evening and start projecting on to the main mesh

pay close attention to the position of the eyelids and the white space (the sclera) in the eye, it gives a lot to an expression. If you look at the screaming girl picture there is a decent amount of white space between the iris and the top eyelid and the bottom eyelid comes up to the iris. the way you have it now makes it look almost more like a surprised look as opposed to fear.
its creepy so far though, creepy as in good. :)

so started to build main armor part meshes. they will be refined more in further process . i took 3dt logo split it in half and put it as a armor part in the back. i'll build more of the armor today at night when i'll have more time :)

If you go armor style there, it'll give a lot of weight to the monster torso part, maybe some kind or mid-ring filed armor pieces onto the tail part for the balance, just a suggestion (Maybe you've already think about it). Keep it up!

thanks for the suggestion washka, but as you allready said - i allready thought of that :) . it will have a lower body armor. i'm wandering what would look better - crocodile tale or crocodile tail armor.
a little bit progress. had about half an hour of free time so modeled it a little. preparing some shapes for chains and other details. for now it somehow looks like a gas mask to me :D .

washka - thanks for reminding me :) it'll move something like aligators and other lizards. cause it has a massive bodie and its not very agile :) . if i'll have time i'll animate and make some basic short animation of it doing something evil :)

here is little more progress. i'll take it to zbrush and refine it later there.

I don't know why, but head of your chara (without eyes part) reminds me a bit master Ooogway from Kung Fu Panda, that's funny.
Maybe because of gestis's turtle entry that I made the comparison.

Keep up da work, seems you're on the good way, when you'll get this armor part finished you could also think about really small details (buttons/fixations, care don't overcharge)
You could enlarge back neck part and add more tubes. I would made them a bit bigger and a lill rectangular rounded (trucks, motorbike/harley). Bigs tubes going to the side of torso coming from central part (Maybe I read your mind there).

Mechanical bits are coming along really nicely.

I agree with washka, some small details could be really cool. But I caution you not to get too wrapped up in them [perhaps save them for later as they won't likely change the silhouette, and as such can be added after you've created the low poly and UV'd is so you know just how much detail will capture], and keep their size relative to the overall character in mind. Given the size and body shape of your character, details too much smaller than what you've got in a few places, may not capture well.

washka - thanks man :) . as for little mermaid i'll give this monster a star fish crown and ginger hair to match the likeness :D .
as for smaller details it allready has them i just dont put them for now cause the overall design of some parts isnt finished yet. i have a set of small details like bolts, buttons, fixations and other mecha parts i dont know how to call in english :) .
as for back neck part you meen this one(shown in picture)? if you're talking about it, i am thinking of replacing the whole front design and add more detail there such as sculls or other ornament relaited to 3dt. i'll have to take my pencill set and a peace of paper and design it :) .
as for big pipes comig to the side of torso - its allready planed. see these two pipe halls in the lower part of the "gas mask look alike part"? there will be two pipes going to the side of the torso. its torso side will have several halls that will be conected with other parts by pipes. and as for pipes these that you see now are only a place holders. i have some designs in my mind and on paper that has more detail.
as i said at the begining - this god will have hell lots of detail. when i'll drop it to zbrsuh than i'll give it even more details.

I think you need to beef up the armor like Warlock 279 said. Right now you have lots of small details and because you`re gonna bake it on a 2k texture all those details are gonna be little pixels and will not be visible also you have a lot of 90 degree extrusions those are also gonna be a bit tricky to bake.

Had seen those on the side, so I was thinking about it.
But on your last face render, there are side zone there on the torso blue plate where there is still skin (lill' empty space there under pecto and above those down lateral claws of the blue plate/downest part).
Thoses two ribcage lateral zones could be filled with two bigger side pipe, to protect torso and emphasize even more first function of lungs.

About your last profile post, no it's not there, it's just on the same part but downer (on ear level) where the pipes grips, more "omega" shaped so you can add more pipes there? Just a suggestion.

washka - thanks . i'll give your thought a try. sounds like a cool idea :) . and about that ear level tube i didnt finish it yet :) leaving it till i finish its jaw armor. i wanted to add more detail in to the inset parts.

so updated the helmet. remember someone missed smaller details like balts and spykes so i aded some of them :) . and started the jaw armor. its nearly finished at this stage. left just a few details and steel teeth. it will be something similar to warhammers ork cheff's jaw armor and deathwing's jaw from warcraft cataclysm.
was curious how many parts i have in my model and counted. so the whole number is about 150 parts made from multiple objects :) .

thanks man. here is a close up of that detail - nothing fancy cause its a wery little one as is bearly visible. as for colour scheme i'm ceeping the one that i show in renders, only skin colour will be little diferent - a little darker .

here's a tiny update. base of its shoulder armor. didnt like the old design so i scraped it and remade from scratch. have some pinches here and there but they will be removed once i start cleaning the topology of the shoulder pad.

thanks for crit :) . functionalitie - some parts are armor, some are decoration. they all will be conected with various elements. this armor will be functional. it'll have to be rigged after all :). as for zbrush - yes, all parts will be detailed within zbrush for more detailed look. and i'm thinking of a 4-8k maps for non competition high poly high rez beauty renders . and yes - a hell lot of work awaits this model :)

Looking good, lots of nice details. Mainly I want to say tho, that tan color you used for the skin in the one render, really works nicely with the blue you've got in the armor.

washka - any crits, especialy visual are wellcome here. maybe its a 3d crazy spirit is what i need :) . i came to a point here when i need some inspiration or a good kick in the ass to jump on this model like crazy :). i think i'll go and browse my 5000 image library i ceep for inspiration :) and then jump to modeling this hell spawn :). i want to finish at least modeling it till competition ends cause when summer starts i have a big comical animation project pending :).

for a high-poly model it looks good, but all those small details are going to get blurred with normals...keep up the hard work

here is a little update. slowly pushing my slef through this comp. its hard to resist to give it another pass of details, but it allready has 3.8milion polys :) . i'll try to finish this armor by monday so i could finaly get with sculpting and remeshing this model.
