Yes! The Dominance War has finally started!
I don't know what I'm going to do yet, but I'm liking this Demon sketch I did just earlier.
http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/9607/demonbr.png (http://img9.imageshack.us/i/demonbr.png/)
However, I don't just want to do a cliched demon. Also, I've been wanting to do some more hard surface work, so I've been thinking of adding some kind of mecha armor onto him. My idea is that he's an ancient being, but has taken new armor and weaponry to be more effective in battle. He loves war, and fights for the fun of it.

Hmm. Decided to go with something completely different instead, a Ent-ish forest god. I kinda like some parts of it, but overall I think it's way too cliche right now. I try messing around with it later. I've got some more concepts that I want to try out, for example adding metal and mechanical bits to this guy to contrast with the natural parts.

Ent-ish forest God looks cool so far. Definitely different from the other tree-like Ents. Tee horns are nice and organic too. Keep up the good work!

Alright. I've begun to refine the shape of the character, giving him a slightly thinner look.
Also, I've come up with a more defined concept. The idea comes from the Roman god Janus, who has two heads that stare in either direction, and is the god of the beginning and end of things. My god is going to be similar, on one side an old and wizened character, who is more in tune with nature, and a younger character who has mechanical parts and futuristic armor-ish clothing. (Like N0X from Dom War 4) The problem I foresee is how they are going to mesh together.
Oh, also, I just got Topogun today, so I'm going to be learning that on the fly while sculpting the rest of my character.

Nice, I was going to suggest trying to bring in some of the hard surface elements you said you wanted to work on, but I see you're already on your way! I'd say try to make sure the two elements play well together, try not to just do a robo-chick trapped up in a tree.

I dunno, I really like this concept more. I had considered doing the other, and made a quick sculpt, but partway through I realized that I didn't want to do a character that cliche. That, and the sculpt was absolutely awful.
More detailing on the back character. I'm going to do more texturing tomorrow.

You're reading my mind; get out of my head! I was actually considering changing the legs, I'm glad someone agrees with me.
What I'm considering is replacing parts of the leg with mechanical parts, and changing the shape to have a more interesting flow. I have some sketches I've been drawing, I'll throw them up at some point to show what I'm thinking.

I dunno, that seems a little creepy. I think it would be better to have the two characters meld into each other, than stabbing into each other.
Here's a sketch of what I was thinking of. I kinda like it, though I think the mecha parts should be a little more subtle, or covered more with vines and such.

although granted your tree ent thing looks friendy so huh.. probably the wrong effect.. :D

Interesting sketch. I was actually thinking no to the mechanical feet for the tree dude, but your sketch looks like an interesting design. Could work out well. I'd say if you wanted to go for that, you should try to incorporate that machine design elsewhere on your character, so the viewer isn't left wondering why your tree dude seems to have machine feet for some reason.

nice stuff!
I'd change the monster's head size.. Babies born with big head in proportion to their body, and because of that the monster kinda looks funny, while the crucified girl on the back of him indicates its a serious direction ur taking.
Also the girl's hand is not gentle enough I think. The the thickness, and maybe the size are too much, and the pose is not working really well atm.
But you strapped the girl there really nicely, and u make a great progress, so keep it up!

Now you mention it, the head does seem quite large. I'll play around with the transpose tool to see if I can't shrink it.
I still haven't gotten around to fixing her hands. It's a problem I've had quite a lot when sculpting; I can't seem to do feminine hands very well. I'll continue to tweak them.
Here's an idea I came up with after staring intently at my model for a good ten minutes. I've given him toes, but made them at the end of ridges on his legs, giving a kind of root-ish look to them. It's weird, but given the rest of my character, I don't think I should be worrying about weirdness. What I am worrying about is trying to pull away from the elephant look they have.
http://img828.imageshack.us/img828/9940/screenshot20110329at416.png (http://img828.imageshack.us/i/screenshot20110329at416.png/)

If your worried about the elephant look I would suggest giving him 5 toes instead of the three I see there; I think the three toes is what's really pushing that look. Also, you could try pulling the toes out a little more, being so close to the trunk of the leg also pushes the elephant like foot.

30-03-2011, 02:52 AM
Yep, I think it's a pretty successful experiment with that look and I just continue to develop it further. It's a great transition out of the tree shapes into the human one. I'd still say try to bring that look to more of the character, so that it's not just an odd and isolated visual element. I think if you can balance it out well on the character it should create a successful look.

While I understand the need to promote yourself, could you please not do it on my thread, or at least not so blatantly? I see it as rude to advertise your thread on someone else's, without even commenting on their artwork.
Anyways, I've sculpted out some texture on the horns/antlers, and I've begun to polypaint them.

My comment on this is (after first seeing the last image and then going back in the thread) that the woman part looks cooler than the front part. The ent guy looks more children's book illustration and the woman more manga, like two different styles. The leg is in the right direction, I'm getting this more from the face of the Ent.
Just my 2 cents.

Gnarly antlers. Look cool on their own, but it would probably be better to judge them on the whole model.
I agree with the last 2 posts though, I think you need to spend more time trying to bring the two concepts together. You have to visually sell the story of why this robo-lady is caught up in the tree all with the character itself. All the elements of your design should help reinforce that story.

I don't know how I'm going to remedy this, though I've a few ideas. Firstly, I'm adding more earthy colors to the girl. I'm going back to my old failsafe: when in doubt, grunge it up. I'll work on it more later.

Not so much a matter of grunge, it's not the actuall bonding that I can't see, but the idea that these characters are from the same universe.

Agree with Koyima, I'd say you're a long ways away from where you should be adding in details like grunge anyways. It's only going to hinder your work as little details like that will distract you from making sure the basic structure is working. You're tree design and cyborg girl aren't separate characters, but need to be treated like 1 solid design. The transition from natural wood to designed metal is just as important as the design of the wood and metal on their own.
Keep at it, you've definitely got a cool concept, it's just going to take some battling to bring it all together.

Yeah, definitely some more mixing of the parts, some subtle spots of mechanical bits here and there on him [like what you were thinking about with your foot sketch, but a little less obvious as you suggested later], as well as really intertwining her more [a-la what Neil_F01 started]. Really bind her in there, make it look like they'll never be separated without destroying the other.
I think you have a lot of stuff going right with this, a lot of really nice detail in there. I think he's got a good shape to his body, there's enough shape to make it interesting without being "hulking muscle-man #54034670" [like the rest of us are making]. Hes got a nice solid mass/weight to him. The hands, and the foot [you experimented with] look good. I think the girl is looking good pretty much the whole way around.
I agree with the others tho, his head, just isn't working. Its a bit large and totally giving me a "Bob Marley with a crazy beard" vibe. I think a rework of the head, would really help to swing him out of the "story book" style into the style that you've got with the girl. What about a mask, instead of a proper face for him? Maybe even a mechanical mask, as tho she's taken over control of him?
Anyway, good stuff stuff so far.

Sorry I haven't updated in ages, but I have been working, honest! I've finished working on the girl for now, and I'm going to move on to work on all of the tubes connecting the girl to the ent, and the bark and roots and such wrapping around her. Model looks good but you should really work on those defuse maps. The treeman is too dark. If you want to add some good visable details on the wood, I would suggest to bring up some cracks with a bright color of wood inside. Also you should add some scratches and stuff to the metal of the girl.
You're making good progress, keep it up :)
