Hey hey everyone! another dominance war starts and another chance to start and fail to finish \o/ feels like its almost the last dominance war when I last showed my face here on threedy, though I have been lurking and always drawing great insperation from the works you guys post here.
its a fantastic brief on this years contest and looking forward to seeing the mighty gods everyone creates! I thought about re-entering my dominance war 3 entry (think he pretty much fitted this breif better than the DWIII one :P) but that'll be cheating and boring
My first ideas so far, a mighty god of fire, ancient and evil, a destroyer and consumer.
here's a very early sketch trying to form an idea of shape and form, and will start thinking about details to nail the character later. of course, your crits comments and suggestions as ever are more than welcome!

thanks chaps :)
havnt had any real time over weekend to play, but another quick sketch to see what feels right. I want to have a real roman feel to this guy, I want the fire and flames to be more prominent however, so need to think how to inmtroduce that in.

Great to see you're on dude!
Love the concepts :D

Great concept so far L3xicon, maybe some fire could come from the hammer (embers on it)? Or the cape could be made of fire?

hey DD and thanks :D
Washka like the cloak of flames idea! think I'll run with that

Concepts look cool, and sounds like you're heading an interesting direction. Romans wore those sandals, that laced up their lower leg, what if you gave that a flame shape, so it looked like flames wrapping up his legs? And you can always work flames into the details on the armor etc. I look forward to seeing more.

I envy your 2d skills. I like the first one for the colors however the second one is harder to tell. When I think of a fire god or demon or anything like that I automatically think of the balrog (http://balrog.one-ring.info/albums/balrog/balrog1.jpg) from the lord of the rings. There might be areas of that you can incorporate in. So far though looks amazing.

Hey bro, your concept are always kick ass! Your designs have bad-ass written all over it! Yo know, adding some spikes would be nice...there's always room for spiky thingies!!

L3x: I'd suggest looking into either a general and subtle flame shape to the ploom from his helm, and/or working in a gentle color fade to suggest the coloring of fire.
Cheers~

its really good to see you join!
I really liked the first idea, where he has no leg, just an effect. I like fire :D
Looking forward to another outstanding work!

hey gents
thanks for all the comments and suggestions! some real good ones there
Still only finding 10 mminutes here or there to keep on sketching, but will try and find some time tonight to play.
Warlock 279 - like the ideas of flames defining design styles. I was also thinking about the roman sandals as an aspect of this, although I think I am going to do away with the legs so might have to look at adding this elsewhere (maybe arms?)
Darchand - yup balrog, and the demon fellas from Darksiders are a heavy influence on this one :)
redonix76 - spikey things are always worth throwing in :D will see were they can add to the flow and design
Novian - def will look at using flames or real flame-like feel to the ploom!
Cordero - with you on this one, think the legs will be gone soon
heres another very quick sketch a few colours to see were I can use the heat, lava and stuff to define shapes

Looking totally epic! Ya, you could easily do the flame stuff off of bracers, or anywhere you have leather strapping of some kind.

thanks for the comments :)
redonix76 - thanks a lot, it's just an old wacom intuos 1 and good ol photoshop :)
Spent an hour or two this evening trying to find the style I want so heres a couple more sketches one a face and head study and another pose shot with alternatives to legs.
I always seem to fall into the more warhammer / blizzard / darksiders et al style when doing characters, wondering if this is the right direction or if I should go with something a bit more dom war...

Lex! Glad to see you back on board, your concepts are always an inspiration. Actually, your DW3 entry is sitting in the ref folder for the guy I'm currently working on.
Like the theme and concept so far, though the head is looking to unique and impressive to be lost on such a massive body.
I'd also suggest checking out my buddies entry from DW3 (http://www.gameartisans.org/contests/events/3/team1/preview_finals_1_3291.html). He was trying something similar (roman inspired fire "god"), and you can see where he ran into a lot of difficulties, particularly when it came transfering the scale of the concept into 3D.

hey guys, killer few days at work, s not much of an update
Lex! Glad to see you back on board, your concepts are always an inspiration. Actually, your DW3 entry is sitting in the ref folder for the guy I'm currently working on.

thanks man :) and good luck with your entry, very flattered to have my old entry in your ref folder! I'm liking Draxxus's roman general dude, the scale is certainly going to be the tough sell. I'm hoping that body proportions, and some fun with camera angles and the pedastal will sell it.
mix mash - thanks! my first priority is to make the god-like feel, unfortunatly this is compromising originality (people have only a few pre concieved ideas as to what gods should look like after thousands of years of tradition, which makes it hard to go against it and make something truly original but still god-like) but I hope to get some originality into some of the smaller details.
GregStrangis - yup :) I hope the final impression is that he has arisen from fire and flame, like a volcano
paulius-st - thanks :) I love doing my concepts but really can't hold my own in the 2d arena! especially with the talent that the dom war brings out! although I am wanting to get back to practising my 2d more. for now, I ll stick in my comfort zone :P
DD - thanks man, glad you like!

ah man! why are you not entering this year?!
as for the sack, he's gonna have rocks of molten stone can't get harder than that :P
GoodAtom - ta :)
L3XICON- God of Color Theory... :P
bah :P firey oranges and a spattering of blue is easy to pull off :)
I've started to play around with some details to get a better feel for the character.
sketch of gauntlet design:
I really like the way the first image looks like the eyes are completely covered or blindfolded.Still though every post shows more and more totally killer concepts for this one. All I can say is "we're not worthy!"

Sasin - thank you! it's going to bhe a real challenge to get the colours and the lighting effects into the 3d, but will be fun!
washka - lol...
dhin - thanks, I'm with you on the 'blindfold' not being able to see the eyes adds a layer of mystery to the face and character, and somehow makes it feel more intimidating I think :)
quick update - started very rough blockout in 3d, and prettry happy with shape, proportions and feel. so now to get into the nitty gritty

I'm not disapointed, really.
Mid vertical cut line for the visor => inside curved and the outside down band of it a bit larger/thick. Neckpart.

this is looking great so far and i guess it will be amazing in the end!
still i liked the theet in the 2d concept more...like he was actually made of stone and the theet where embedded in the skull... made him look more fierce and violent as i think fire should be

Great start on the sculpt L3X, the chin really stands out well.
I'd maybe try lowering the visor a bit more. I agree with the idea of covering up the eyes makes him look a bit more menacing, but at the angle it's at now it looks less intentional and more like he's just got a helmet that's too big for him. Looking back at your earlier block in, the placing of the visor had a bigger impact I think.
L3XICON
04-04-2011, 11:31 PM
thanks for the comments everyone! Puckducker, I agree with you on the helmet, not sure what direction I will take yet, but I may try and make the lower part more of a visor design :) we'll see.. I ll do some concepts when time allows
Not a huge amount of progress, so a very quick update on armour design
