Now that school has ended, its time to get right back on the horse with a new project while I do my job search :P

Since I have done a fantasy game character and attempted a more realistic Character with David Bowie, I wanted to go back to my toon roots. I've started modeling a young cartoon style version of Dorthy form the wizard of Oz. I'm going to base the face largely off of kinkei's work:
http://kinkei.deviantart.com/

I have some reference images for the cloths I'm going to go for, but I'll be posting those up once I get the body mesh complete. I will be working primarily with Maya, to try to work on creating a more detailed model in Maya as a pose to Zbrush "thought I will be using Zbrush for some things" I also want to expand my knowledge with Maya paint FX's Hair, and the Mai Skin shadier.

So here are some wip shots.

Got most of the modeling done. This is a paint over of what I want to go for. I was able to see with this paint over that the eyes need a bit more work to get closer to the reference picture I'm using, and there are still some areas needing smoothing like the knees. However I will get back to that because I've started to block in the clothing :)

So A few more updates. Moved the eys a bit further appart on the face but other then that have left the body alone for now. I know there will be more tweaks but sometimes I like to leave things so I can see if something starts to really bug me.

Here are some screen shots of the dress I've started. It will have the same checker type pattern the original dress had. I haven't tweaked the symmetry on the top ruffles yet, but I will. I have to do the same to the bottom. The back doesn't have much detail because its going to be covered but I've kind of put in the base of what should be there.

Below is the block in and ref image I'm using for the sneaker boots, which will be the ruby red slippers :P I wont be following the same wrinkle patten on the ref shoe. Instead I want the red to look glitzy like the real ruby red shoes, and I plan on putting one of those logos or something on them like real sneakers, only they will say "RubyRed"

a lot of good things going on here. really like the way you ve modeled the cloth. the only crit i have his her nose. i feel the bridge of the nose should be bigger and stick out a bit more. also i think that the nose it self needs some work just the overal general shape to it. keep it up looks good :)

Thanks for the cc, and ya I agree. I am not sure how I want the nose to be atm. The concept picture I am referencing most doesn't have much of a nose, but I know I want her to have one so I thought I'd get a basic shape and topo down and leave it while I complete the clothing. When I can I like to leave things I'm not sure of for further reflection and do other tasks in the project. I think what i might do is copy paste a verity of nose's that pre exist onto her later and maybe put a few up for feedback, see if I can get one with a good feel :)

Hey, Digiavalon

I really like your model, but I agree with the crits on the nose, I actually think it's way too sharp and small for her face. You're looking for something softer and doll or infant-like. I dug on google for some possible noses that might suit your model and here's what i found

I think the best thing would be to combine doll nose proportions with a baby type nose and also make it slighty bigger and wider than what you have.
Also, it's just my opinion, but i think the model will benefit visially if you make the irises slightly smaller so we can see more of the eye whites, will make her look more human at least.
And you can also check her clavicles, they look razor sharp and are located way too low, and even though the character is cartoony, i think this part would look better if you keep it more realistic, or at least subtle

Added some more work to the face, put in temp color for the mouth to better see it. I'm not sure on the eyelash's yet, I can't decided if I want more long single eyelash's or if I want the chartoony shape like I currently have. I tried a few things and decided to may leave the final tweaks to that as I texture so I can see how any makeup I add might look. If you have suggestions throw thm out there, this is the pic I am most referencing, http://kinkei.deviantart.com/#/d3ab88k but I am open to other things too.

@ Olga8515 did some more work to the face based on your nose idea's, they were really helpful thanks! I still have more tweaks to do but I think I'm starting to get a bit of the button nose I want.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v177/digiavalon/d9.jpg

I also have the hand in now, and am starting to do the work to the sweater "I'll post the ref pic when its a little more complete, for feedback" I know the arm needs a bit more work, "you cant see here, but there's no elbow." and I'm not entirely sure its long enough. I've never done toon arms before, and to be honest for some reason arms are tricky for me so feedback would be loved here.

Finally the only think you can probably ignore in terms of feedback is there's a bit of dimplness in the face that you can ignore there are a few things unfinished there, some I wont be able to totally smooth till its one mesh. Oh an ignor the ears, I'm just starting them and they look odd lol.

massive improvement man. One thing i would say about the hand is for me it not comfortable to have my hand in that position in real life. i feel much more comfortable when my thumbs is relaxed and you get a real "C" shape bewteen the thumb and index. heres a photo my beautiful chubby hand that i was using as my own reference. hope it helps :)

@meowmeow

Lol I meant the shape not the cubbyness haha

Anyways two new screenshots, I'm pretty much done with the clothing, any extras will be in zbrush or after she's posed "like the zipper"

No changes have been made to the body based on the last few critics. I'm gonna get most of the uv's underway so I can take a little modeling break. Its my plan to then start on Toto and come back to her with fresh eyes...though I should probably fix that ear first :P

Anyways cc is still welcome I'll just come back to it ;) hopefully next post will be toto started :D

its looking really good :). back to the hand though, the way you have it now it is easier to rig, but you ll have to readjust that thumb in most case in to a more relaxed pose. where your thumb rest just under your index finger. i also noticed that your hand was missing some curve to it across the knuckles. heres a quick doodle to help explain.

hope that helps, cant wait to see more :)

My teacher emailed me with some suggestions, so I did some tweaks to the face, added some face "temp hair shape" and did a rough paint over is PS. Still doing UV's and I will get back around to fixing that hand new week :P I'm moving so I might not respond asap. Anyways wanted to post this face paint over see how you guys are feeling about it. I know its just a front on, but i am trying to fix up those eyes as suggested so let me know how you feel, I make them a bit smaller. "PS my tablet is packed, so worst paint over ever lol, but I think it gets the idea across"

Looking better and better. Want to do something similar when I do my next character, Inspired from Disney and tangled mostly.

3 things, Ears needs some fixing like you said. Also the nose is very sharp. Almost looks detached. The collarbones looks to sharp and shouldn't meet.

Looking forward to seeing the next update.

I like the shoes - they're an important part of the Dorothy character, and the converse-style reboot (PUN!) works well :]

Thanks @ rjsmal and timberwo7ves I'm glad your both liking it so far :)

@kirgan thanks for the cc, some of those things I'll be fixing when I marge the too sides together, like the collarbone. I'll do some more work to the nose though. I grabbed some screen shots of tangled, I love the look of that film and by comparison I can see what you mean about the nose so I'll try to widen it some more :)

Okey so updates :D Uv's are done for everything but the body, as there are some more tweaks to do there. For now here is the updated hand, which I think is way better, but still needs a bit of work, especially in that bottom shot. I think the final work on the hand I may just do in Zbrush because I think I want some normals for the hand details anyways. I won't be going to crazy though I want to keep it toony still, but i think I have a better overall shape and topo now.

Anyways I'll leave that for you guys for now, and I'll be back with some fixed ears soon :D

hey nice updates on the hand - I think it could do with some improvements though: the thumb appears to be too far up the palm, I feel it could do with pulling (the root) nearer the wrist. Also the space between the pinky and ring finger seems uncomfortably large. keep going, its an interesting project :D

Only a small update because i've been busy with an art test, but here are the wip jeans. Keep in mind I won't be doing pockets and things because you wont see them. But ya getting the shape of wrinkles in and some fabric texture. I'll probably ware it out in the knees a bit once its even. Maybe even do some hand painted shadows for extra depth.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v177/digiavalon/d15.jpg

@timberwo7ves- ya I'm thinking the main changes will be in zbrush now, just because I can work with it a bit faster and i want to get a few normals out anyways, but noting too major, want to keep that cartoony look.

looks nice .What the violet colour is representing on the top of the jeans ?
Are you planning to use displace or just bump for the jeans texture ?

Glad you guys are liking it so far :)

@ahtiandr yes I will add a bit of a bump for the jeans, and for other things but I'm doing it last because my comp cant handle much lol

Anyways here's an update, still have a few little things to do for the jeans, like the texture and the stitches. However below is the wip of the dress, I have 3, two as paint over's. I'd love some feedback on what you like, all checker, checker blue and lace, or checker and just blue.

So I didn't like some of the belt combos I had so i added a real belt, which I think looks cool. I have a few tweaks to do then I'm moving on to the jacket/sweater.
