The year is 2089 mutant zombie hounds prowl the planet. They rip the flesh from anything they can sink their fangs into. It wasn't always this way but to many it felt like centuries rather than years since the cataclysm began. It all started when a manipulated virus strain meant to cure blue eye disease in pigs mutated. The new strain jumped species to humans and cattle, from which it had originated. In dogs the virus turns the subject into a ravenous beast with zombie like traits. To kill the infected subject brain function must be halted. Severing the head from the body or crushing the skull are the only ways to completely disable the creature. Notable are the blue eyes of the victims. Unlike the Romero zombies of fiction these monsters are just as fast as normal dogs so gunfire is the most effective means of defence, (head-shots). Infection is spread through fluid transfer including blood, saliva and semen. Eighty percent of human bite victims manifest the disease and turn feral. However unlike their canine counterparts human victims begin wasting immediately on infection and are estimated to rarely remain animated beyond 8 months. Unfortunately these timespans are based on a small sampling and it is unknown if there is any possibility of recovery as most of the infected are easily identified and soon killed. Dogs on the other hand can live in the fully infected form to normal pre-disaster lifespans and reproduce and mature normally aside from the effects of the infection. The virus jumps to the offspring immediately through breast milk. Within five years virtually no known unaffected animals have been reported.
Within months of the plaque outbreak the cult of the Dog was born. From the roots of southern fundamentalism and voodoo sprang a form of worship of the zombie virus. They believe that by paying homage to the beast they can appease it and protect themselves from its ravages. Human sacrifice to captured dogs has been rumoured in some areas.
