The Challenge Rules
1). Each challenge we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modeling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief can be removed and the poster disqualified.
2). You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified.
3). Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like and must include a clear and easy to see wireframe of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Wire renders/ Cell Shaded or Screengrab wireframes are acceptable. Any wireframes we cannot see correctly will be disqualified. The key is for us to be able to see the wireframes clearly to ascertain how you modelled the subject matter.
4). You MUST include the following details with each submission:
A). Software used
B). Time spent creating the model.
Any further information is voluntary but posts not containing the required information can be removed and the poster disqualified.
5). Post TWO images per entry which must be no larger than 1280x1024 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 195k.
1 image for your wireframes and 1 for your clay combined with a optional beauty render.
These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page.
Do not link to external images files. Images larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials)
will be removed and the poster disqualified.
6). The creation of displacement maps, normal maps and any splines drawn out in an external program other than your modeling software are to be included in your modeling time.
7). Time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the allocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post it as long as it's recognizable.
8). Posting the same entry twice in a challenge is considered to be double posting and will result in a disqualification. When asked to fix a previous post due to DQ or any other reason, you must fix the first post, or delete it altogether and create a new one.
9). The Winner must email jo@3dtotal.com to claim their prize.
10). Only 1st place & 2nd place (i.e. the runner up) can claim a prize.
These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions!

if that's you're window view CG i must say for the first time in my life i'm envious at something. Damn i would like to have that view.....
i am a fan of the city, but concrete slabs, thousands of people all around me is at times not me - i like the outdoors

CG- just to be clear, we have to model the view, but, is it also mandatory to include the window?
I think is a great topic, it can be looked from different styles and topics, is going to be a very creative one :D

is that, what i see out of my windows.
but perhaps i create some surrealism. my hometown has a nice habour.
many ideas and a weekend on work :/

It would be nice to have the window included but not essential, as the challenge is a "room" with a view, so it could be an opening, windows or doors etc. Oh and the window is from google! I wish I had a view like that too lol :)

previous challenge will be judged when CG get's a chance to take some time and makes a decision.
your second entry is ok, since it was posted prior to CG's post that said the challenge is over.

I've been having a nightmare with my new laptop, Cinema 4D wasn't working properly..... actually at first it wasn't even installing and it turned out i had to update the Intel chipset drivers on a new system lol. Then finally after hours of painful crashes in cinema 4d found out that open gl needed to be switched off to be stable. So finally...... very nearly back to normal....... it's really weird going back to a laptop after having a 20" screen for the last 6 years, I might end up plugging in the monitor and having a dual screen system.... but I do like having a widescreen display :)
allready got a idea sketched out for this one, gone model it later today.
CG - seems like all C4D version have problems with the open gl / viewport problems.
when i used v9 i had problems with driver, and even now that i have R12 is still have the occasional problem, just recently i finally found a driver that works well with R12 and the rest of my CG programs.
well here is my entry. hope ya guys like it.

Nice model Bgen, I love the retro saucers. There's something kind of sweet and sinister about this image, is this a friendly visit or an invasion?
Really itching to enter this one but I don't have any free evenings this week. Hoping to have a go in my lunch breaks, not ideal though.

Gotta be the poorest turnout for a SMC this week :( ......... at this rate it won't be hard to judge! Anyone wanna challenge bgen's entry?
I totally understand why, there's alot going on with Atomhawk & DW ongoing. Here's hoping the next SMC will be back to normal, we will be returning to the 60 mins time limit on the next one. I'm drawing up artwork & brief text now.

Well gutted i couldn't do anything this week, lost my glasses on a night out on saturday and specsavers wont give me any contacts till tomorrow (something to do with them being c*nts), that mixed with loads of uni work has meant i haven't really been able to sit at my comp for longer than a couple of hours without my eyes burning heh.
Hopefully ill get some contacts tomorrow morning and try and get a submission together for before the finish time..

my entry will come as soon as possible... last beauty render takes only 12 hours.... and contains some mistakes *gnarf*- next is nearly complete, i'll post it tomorrow
It's the third attempt - the others had problems in the mapping and not enough time ;)
PS: but before it's to empty, i can post the clay & wireframerender ;)
ClassicGamer-3DT
07-04-2011, 09:45 PM
Course you can post the wireframes and clays, the beauty shot is an optional one anyway (although everyone enjoys making them). :)

Hey Kate, long time no see you in the SMCs. Wellcome back!
Well, as I said, I gave it a try after dinner, I'm really sorry but I'm not going to make a beauty render, I would like to, but I have no time for it. The idea is a "window", I mean, the view from the cockpit of a spaceship, someone discovering a new world, that's my personal interpretation to the Smc title, "take a look outside".
Hope you like it, and I hope to see some entries before time is out.

here's the spoken entry - some Problems stay - but i hope you will enjoy it.
for the wireframe the windows are clear and the curtain in the rights side not extrude - in the clayrender it's all grey^^

90 min modeling
1-2 hours of half paying attention materials and rendering (mental ray)

Hey finally some nice entries!
RSKate, have you ever been in CinqueTerre, Italy? I say because your image is almost exact to the views I had in the bed and breakfast I was when I went to that wonderful place. It instantly reminded me the sole window trough which you only could see the sea, and from time to time, a little boat.
RockstarKate
08-04-2011, 07:15 AM
Nope, never been to Italy. Wish I was there though!
I was looking at lots of pictures of Greek islands though, so I guess I got the general area of the world correct :)
Thanks!
nice to see some other entries.:dance::dance:, but i am ready for the next SMC :D.
pablo - nice cockpit - the perspective reminds me of the good old xwing game i used to live and play alot.
RSKate - indeed as pablo states, your picture has a feel of italy, some bed and breakfast(the cheaper ones :D)
have only a little windows through which u can see the ocean. realy nice model.
Trash - really like the seaport model - more than the other one.

sorry for the delay, had 4 ideas, not sure if i can do much more than this one - my kid got some stomach viral thing, and so he passed it on to me and the pregnant missus - the fun :) we all are loving the bathroom right about now.
on a more non disgusting note - he's my first entry
(if you see too many wires on doors, windows etc, it's because i just made one object than detaches parts and transformed it to glass, so not to create separately, and didn't have time to clean up the mesh...)
beauty would be worth of making - will see if i can do anything on a pc

You know? I can't remember if I played Xwing... I remember playing Starwing, Rogue Squadron and Freespace. Now I started watching Battlestar Galactica (a bit late, I know) so I got influenced by all that kind of images. For the cockpit itself, I searched for plane references on google.
rocneasta - nice composition, definitly worth making a proper render out of it. hope u and u're family get's soon better.
pablo - i have played all those games as well :p. Battlestar Galactica any good ?, never seen it. was more the trekkie.

Don't worry, Speed Modelling Contests are ideal for the purpose of training and learning a lot of techniques. So just go on and participate :) you also can sometime ask some mate how he/she did something, people here sure will be pleased to answer you.
