The Challenge Rules

1). Each challenge we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modeling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief can be removed and the poster disqualified.

2). You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified.

3). Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like and must include a clear and easy to see wireframe of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Wire renders/ Cell Shaded or Screengrab wireframes are acceptable. Any wireframes we cannot see correctly will be disqualified. The key is for us to be able to see the wireframes clearly to ascertain how you modelled the subject matter.

4). You MUST include the following details with each submission:

A). Software used
B). Time spent creating the model.

Any further information is voluntary but posts not containing the required information can be removed and the poster disqualified.

5). Post TWO images per entry which must be no larger than 1280x1024 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 195k.
1 image for your wireframes and 1 for your clay combined with a optional beauty render.
These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page.
Do not link to external images files. Images larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials)
will be removed and the poster disqualified.

6). The creation of displacement maps, normal maps and any splines drawn out in an external program other than your modeling software are to be included in your modeling time.

7). Time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the allocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post it as long as it's recognizable.

8). Posting the same entry twice in a challenge is considered to be double posting and will result in a disqualification. When asked to fix a previous post due to DQ or any other reason, you must fix the first post, or delete it altogether and create a new one.

9). The Winner must email jo@3dtotal.com to claim their prize.

10). Only 1st place & 2nd place (i.e. the runner up) can claim a prize.

These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions!

I tried to go too big for the look out the window one. I got really disgusted because I'm a noob who wants to be perfect. Anyway I'll spend more time with that. This one looks reasonable for me though. shouldn't be too hard.
Good luck everyone

I know this is simple... but imagine smallish, three eyed, pink skinned, slugs drinking from these, oh the gas would be for their hover chairs... or something....
Anyway done in 3ds max and did the modeling in 35 minutes

@ GaretJaxSozap - you can always do better by presenting your work better. Look at starters and you'll see straight away what was made out of a simple bottle, idea and presentation wise.

@ CG - nice idea and cool starter

Hehe, Tea! It's a little stupid I placed the camera at an angele you don't even see the liquid... It took me quite some time to make a nice Tea-Material but too bad it's not in the render, at least I have a Tea-Material now.

Wahey! some nice entries already!

I'm gonna do a classic juice carton drink in a bit, but gonna create the artwork from scratch again like the Threedy SMC (Pepsi Max) design.

Below is the original artwork I created, I wanted to share as i'm really glad with the results. It's been resized as my original artwork is the correct size of 22cm which is 6600 x 2250 in pixels.

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk208/classicgamer-3dt/ClassicGamer-2DFizzyPopLabelArtwork-1.jpg

If anyone would like the original photoshop file to have a play with, I can upload it.

Well, this in fact is quite easy, just a drop of some transparent gel (of which the ingredients are unknown) with ice.

An upload would be awesome, its seem a very nice universal design for a bottle or can entry anyone could use. Although I think the version you got there is already high-ress enough for SMC entry's.

Well it does seem high res but I like to work to real world scale if at all possible. I measure the label and it was 22cm x 8.5cm to wrap around the bottle section so that translates to 6600 x 2250 in pixels, but in photoshop you can also change the scale to cm too :)

Here's the zipped photoshop (http://www.zshare.net/download/88799652c9a14bd8/) file it's 947KB zipped and about an 8mb file unzipped.

Favorite drink is a tough one. But Grand Marnier is near the top of the list. I actually just went and bought some because looking at all the references was making me want it so much!

I planned to make a glass of it also, but spent too much time messing around with making the red ribbon. Textures and rendering about another 2 hours (mental ray)

I can't actually show the whole wireframe without smoothing because everything is so close to everything else- things intersect. So I'm showing it here smoothed, and then separated and unsmoothed. Hope that's okay! Can change if not.

Wow, I was actually going to post about this but you guys beat me to the punch. There is actually a real "Pan Galactic Gargle blaster" which was one of my favorite drinks. You can get one at the Two Parrots on Granville st. in downtown Vancouver, BC. It's a multi-colored drink that consists of 151, tequila and melon liqueur. Usually found as a green and red looking concauction. (I think the one I'm talking about is #3)

Anyways, I'll try to find a picture of it, but definitely a great drink with a great name.

@ RockstarKate - lovely ribbon... i once made the AIDS ribbon, and it gave me pain tbh :( did it in 30 min but from third attempt - having said that yours was difficult to craft

ClassicGamer-3DT
10-04-2011, 08:41 AM
rocneasta - I would prefer the correct compostioned images that you usually post, just because the model is simplier, does not mean you should/need to post a single/simplier set of images.

RockstarKate - Wow Kate that's a beauty of a model, a really nice shaped bottle actually, great work on the ribbon and the seal, very good indeed.

When or if anyone tries to add water droplets to their bottles or drinks it's a tricky one, I was experimenting for some time and ended up greating a shader & geometry, the shader consists of smaller beads of water, water droplets and water streaks, and the geometry are for the larger droplets of water, the geometry was done fairly easily, you just simply model about 10 little spheres and make them all a little different then bung them into a null object, then into a mograph cloner, set the cloner to object, make a copy of the bottle/glass and hide it from the renderer, add said bottle/glass to the cloner and set the clones to surface and hey presto you've got water droplets, for more realism you can add in a random effector to the cloner and offset the droplets across the surfaces even more.

I'm still working on my juice carton entry, got the designs finished and the modelling, but trying to get good renders out.

RockstarKate - really neat model, clean and spot on. love the ribbon.
CG - love the render of your starter !
vicban3d - intresting idea with the temprature regulator. @ first i thought it was bomb with a timer though then i read your text... :p
Edwiersma - clean efficent. the giraffes face makes me smile :D

here is my entry.

ClassicGamer-3DT Looking forward to your entry, can't wait.
rocneasta (Entry1) Wires are clear but I had some trouble looking at the render, the perspective gives a very distorted look.
RockstarKate Nice and efficiënt modelling and even including a lovely render.
rocneasta (Entry2) Whow, you really nailed it! Love the cartoony look wires look very clean as well, not too much polys. Great Entry!
bgenNice model and render, only thing I'm wondering is why the render time is soo long. I've done some caustic scene tests but even those didn't had render times above 15 mins. What settings did you use?

And yes, I'm also working on an entry, I've modelled 16 mins on it so far but had to lay it aside for some college work.

Hey, anybody have an idea or a tutorial to point me to for making the tiny bubbles that are captured in hand-blown glass? I made a Patron bottle last night for my next entry and was thinking of trying to add this detail. I'd like to do it with textures (mental ray, 3ds max)

rocneasta
10-04-2011, 06:09 PM
like tiny air bubbles captured inside a glass thin wall?

RockstarKate
10-04-2011, 06:16 PM
Yes, like THIS (http://www.phamous69.com/slideshow/bread/Patron_Silver.jpg)

rocneasta
10-04-2011, 06:24 PM
i'm having a feeling you like your drinks hard :p

about the question at hand, how about to make inner profile of the bottle - like a plane object in the middle of the thin glass wall of the bottle. Then just apply PArray with some sphere - bloob mesh, play with variations and you'll get it the effect desired (perhaps, since this is a wild guess). You should get a geometry inside the geometry, but since it's glass it will be visible...

RockstarKate
10-04-2011, 06:45 PM
That's a good idea, although I would prefer to find a texture option rather than a modeling one (my laptop hates life when it comes to glass!). It would be pretty simple to make a middle of the glass plane- I could just use the shell modifier with half the inner amount I used to make the interior surface of the bottle. Hmm. We shall see. I may just skip it for now and render it from a greater distance.

I used to be a bartender and there are so many beautiful drinks out there! I have a third entry planned that involves my first 2 entries, stay tuned!

ClassicGamer-3DT
10-04-2011, 07:17 PM
You can get a pretty cool effect with a shader, but the only result I know is specific to Cinema 4D's noise channel effects.

Edwiersma
10-04-2011, 08:23 PM
Not exactly what you need and not done within the given software but very simple.

Done in Modo using replicators, which would be particle based. From the things I remember using Max years ago this shouldn't be to hard.

What I did:
-Create a ball.
-Make a nice glass material.
-Make another Ball and scale it to bubble size.
-Flip the mesh, so the normals point inwards.
-Assign the same glass material.
-Use a particle emitter to spawn balls of different sizes into the glass mesh.
-and render (this one took 2 Mins and 9 Seconds).

I've been rendering all evening............... so far ive rendered 6 images, 3 clays & 3 beauty shots. While i'm waiting for another one to finish i'm creating artwork for another entry i've got in mind :)

Rendering bottles which look great apart from they don't have any caps, ran out of time :(

Edwiersma
10-04-2011, 09:01 PM
These bubbles are looking better already, only thing different is more and smaller bubbles. I really like the effect, so thanks RockstarKate for getting me testing this. 1 Million Polys for all the bubbles, still rendered at 10 mins.

ClassicGamer-3DT Can't you render a little faster? I'm getting really curious now.

ClassicGamer-3DT

OK 2nd go at this SMC. Fairly pleased with the look of these "Energy Juice Drinks" but still wanna try and nail the chilled water droplets wet look with proper water streaks and condensation, maybe in my next entry. Bottle was modelled high res..... hence no lower resolution wireframes.

Nice! Thanks for trying to work it out!

I guess I'll see how my crippled laptop likes millions of polys... Not much, I fear. I may have to sneak it into work and use the render farm. I am surprised that I haven't found any tutorials for making a glass material to simulate this in mental ray.

rocneasta, the best thing about a render farm, to me, is being able to send the job away and keep working on your computer. It's not waiting for renders that bothers me, it's having my computer all tied up, lol! It is a nice thing to have- and very useful when you have really short deadlines.

I'm in such a habit of finding any render that takes more than 1 minute unacceptable that it's hard to even set up a scene that takes longer. Ok, off to play with bubbles!

rocneasta
11-04-2011, 02:27 AM
i managed to have 3 laptops on which i can work, so i don't have an excuse to get a render farm or at least spend money on online one... Still it's slow and painful to watch, but i'm happy as long as i don't have to redo it because of an error, or something i overlooked.

Anyhow, my 3rd entry - i wish i had more time, but i kicked the bucket :) hehe, no the bucket didn't get modeled the way i planned, i spent to much time on the wood planks, making the dovetail joints... Not saying i ain't happy, just that it could use some time on the bucket.

Honki,
Nice model! I like the metal texture!

I ended up taking the cheap and fast way out on the glass bubbles. Maybe some other time. Just used a map in the reflectance channel. size limited due to laptop performance. 2 min not bad for caustics though! Wireframes aren't very interesting on this model, so I opted not to give them their own window. Adding noise and UV mapping included in modeling time.

Bottle, glass and fluid made with revolved splines.
Foam is just a modified cylinder.

The labels are just copied faces from the bottle, shelled, then FFD'd!

I know this is incorrect, the post I mean. Trying to save pics without the correct software is difficult. I'll try to post the wire frames before the deadline. Anyway comments are always welcome. Thanks.
Done in 24 minutes in 3ds max. Texture was about 50 minutes

getting the right noise texture took more time than I thought.
The time is an estimate, didn't really keep track, but it's real quick to do.

Some really great entries this week, and I love the topic. I don't think I've got time to enter, family staying and apparently it's "rude" to ignore them in favour of 3d total.

So here is my quicky for this round. Like I said, poorly planned, so dont get shocked by 44 minutes it took me to make. Straight run. With preparation I could get it drastically down. Next time.

For what I have seen so far... FANGTASTIC entries everyone :)

So 44 minutes in my good old 3Ds Max 2008.

won't make it with my 4th entry - still 20 min of modeling time left, but max crashed 7 times while getting reactor going for the ice cubes :(

anyhow, just wanted to show what i created

Thank you for kind words ClassicGamer. That logo is from wallpaper. Was it my own, it would have my blood type on it. Which is of course the tastiest there is :D

Rocnesta: Reactor for cubes? Isnt that a bit... overkill? :D
- I mean the mesh on cubes seems way too dense and the glass is concave (more difficult for reactor). My computer is crashing even if it has to think about those and reactor in one sentence. I would have used proxies if I were you.

I got all of the glasses of the image I posted on the first page modelled with fluids included under 45 mins, I was doing placement and texturing still had to model so of the extra fruit and mini-umbrella's and I would have been done... It's on my other machine which I will only be able to acces till monday evening, too bad for me...
I might just post a render though... And good luck everybody!

@ JAPO: about the mesh, it's a speed thing - simple box, 10x10x10 segs and a noise modifier on top, with 1 iteration of turboosmooth...

but yea, will try proxying it

I understand its speed thing. And I pretty much get how you got that cube shape. :)

What I was refering to is that you didnt make things easier for reactor. Whenever there is cavity in object, reactor has problems, or at least slows down. It seems to me those crashes you refered to were caused by this. Interaction of too complex objects with cavities.
