The Challenge Rules

1). Each challenge we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modeling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief can be removed and the poster disqualified.

2). You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified.

3). Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like and must include a clear and easy to see wireframe of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Wire renders/ Cell Shaded or Screengrab wireframes are acceptable. Any wireframes we cannot see correctly will be disqualified. The key is for us to be able to see the wireframes clearly to ascertain how you modelled the subject matter.

4). You MUST include the following details with each submission:

A). Software used
B). Time spent creating the model.

Any further information is voluntary but posts not containing the required information can be removed and the poster disqualified.

5). Post TWO images per entry which must be no larger than 1280x1024 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 195k.
1 image for your wireframes and 1 for your clay combined with a optional beauty render.
These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page.
Do not link to external images files. Images larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials)
will be removed and the poster disqualified.

6). The creation of displacement maps, normal maps and any splines drawn out in an external program other than your modeling software are to be included in your modeling time.

7). Time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the allocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post it as long as it's recognizable.

8). Posting the same entry twice in a challenge is considered to be double posting and will result in a disqualification. When asked to fix a previous post due to DQ or any other reason, you must fix the first post, or delete it altogether and create a new one.

9). The Winner must email jo@3dtotal.com to claim their prize.

10). Only 1st place & 2nd place (i.e. the runner up) can claim a prize.

These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions!

Does it have to be derivative or can it be totally original? (meaning a logo for your own imaginary movie studio)

This might be over ambitious of me but gonna attempt a poster featuring the London clock tower from the Day After Tomorrow

You can create your own logo if you wish yeah.

Like with challenge #04 if it's popular enough it will get extended to a two weeker.

ClassicGamer-3DT
16-04-2011, 11:04 PM
Finally made a start on my starter entry earlier, after a few hours grabbing reference material and taking screengrabs from a DVD, i've made a start on the text of the logo.

Unfortunately the font was custom made for the film i've chosen, so i'm gonna have to make the text from scratch aswell...... good job there's 2 hours for this challenge otherwise i'd only have just under 40 mins left to continue.

JAPO
16-04-2011, 11:16 PM
Ummm... is it 2 hours or 90 minutes? Now yo got me confused :)

and one more question - how far or how much can we deviate from the original company or film name? Or should we not at all?

ClassicGamer-3DT
16-04-2011, 11:34 PM
oops good point yeah sorry it's 1 hour & 1/2 isn't it lol.

You can change the name completely if you wish, or create your own logo entirely.

For instance say you wanted to do the Warner Bros logo, you could either put your own initials in there or completely re-design the logo and have something utterly different to the badge and WB were are familiar with.

You could Steampunk 20th Century Fox's Logo, or make a futurisitic Pixar Cars logo, or even a completely ballooned shaped Up logo, there's alot of choice here.

Here's a clue as to what i'm creating for my entry, i've got the basics all blocked out and the title text is done, just need to finish up refining and adding details right up until I run out of time.

Ran out of time to add any of the other details...... I may work on this scene at a later date, but for now just wanted to get it out and show it off. I'm really happy with the way the text has come out, having to build it from scratch was annoying but at the same time I really like that i'm made this title myself :) Also a first for me using the fish eye warped lens effect :)

Enjoy :)

paulius-st - I don't usually allow unfinished entries/w.i.p's but I adore what you've done with the MGM logo, excellent modelling, and the beginnings of the cartoon Lion's head is adorable, really looking forward to seeing the finished article.

Meauxable - Super V for Vendetta mask, just a shame you're out of the time limit. Maybe next time eh.

I still might do the 20th Century Fox logo, but not sure what to do yet.

CG - Awsome starter !! Really Clean and inspiring.
paulius-st - Great start so far - for some reason i see the Kellogs Frostie Tiger in the center, quote" They're Great!" :D
Meauxable - Nice Mask, the beauty render seems though a touch too dark.

btw. CG - would be preparing the fonts in Illustrator count as modeling time ?

paulius-st - Can't help but love that entry :) Just make me smile

bgen - Technically the Illustrator files imported into the software of your choice will be in the same state as a font spline so i'm not going to count the creation of the font in illustrator. It's drawn in Illustrator, and there's points moved around but it's not the same. HOWEVER if you created the spline within your software of choice then it will have to be counted into the modelling time frame.

vicban3d - thanks. your entry looks good :) . but didnt you forget a clay render? :)

GaretJaxSozap
18-04-2011, 10:49 PM
I might be wrong, but isn't the clay render optional if you have the beauty or is it the other way around?
Anyway I hope no one else does the bad robot logo. the Day After Tomorrow is a little too complicated for me to get done in the 90 mins. And I'm without computer after tomorrow

By the way great job everyone, I really like the pixar logo. how'd you get the light in there?

ClassicGamer-3DT
18-04-2011, 11:48 PM
Beauty render is optional not the clay, so kindly please add your clay composite to your original post vicban3d, thank you :)

You'd be surprised how many members never read the rules, they look at topic and get modelling :)

OK so this is a little bit off-piste. I had this idea that I wanted to combine Portal and the great Saul Bass 'Vertigo' poster. I had originally intended to model an environment with portals receding into the distance, but I slightly underestimated how long it would take me to model the bot, even though I really tried to plan it in advance.

The final model really only make sense in the beauty render, so I'm not sure where that leaves me with the competition. Lots of reusing the same bits of geometry to save time, and I really think he would have benefited from a fetching hat, as in the original poster.

Hi everyone
Lovely chllenge theme. I already have a model and I am finishing it :). It is pity that our beauty render have to be part of 1024*768 clay render. I know that it's optional but it could be pretty nice if we could post beauty render as independent picture like Lonelymons post.
BTW there are really nice entries. I wish you good luck :).

Thanks for all the nice comments, really enjoying everyone's entries. Hats off to anyone who goes for organic modelling in these competitions. Not my strength.

@peas it is my understanding that it is ok for your beauty render to be a 3rd image since it is only the wire and clays that are mandatory. Happy to be told otherwise though.

dantrodgers - Good movie, good idea, good execution, hope you do get a chance to make another entry. Its really interesting to see what else people can come up with, so I hope to see many more entries!

ok so here is my atempt No2, i think i'll aproach these comps from a stylised and cartoon vision from now. had so much fun with the gun so i allmost forgot what i was doing :D . sory for clay render not being the same composition as beauty render cause i took apart all the scene for wire render and not waisting more time i did a clay render :( .

cool man :} how do you do the second image style render? like clay with wire? Is there a name for this type that I can look up for Maya?

paulius-st
20-04-2011, 03:11 PM
this clay render is achieved by using a composit material and rendering with mental ray. dont know how its done with maya but maybe MR is the same in maya as in max. so i chose a composite material and as a first material i chose standart . then i select a difuse colour than i tick a "wire slot" than in advanced parameters i chose wire colour and thickness. and its all. aply material to mesh and render.

as for render type - its called clay wire render, clay and isoline render and so on. everyone calls it in his own way :) .

edit: try this one.

Maya 2011, 84m

I'll edit the post to include a textured version if I have time. Forgive the awful clay (does it count?) I'm pretty new to Maya (only managed to smooth the 'A' in the time available, and even that's pinching in some areas :()

--edit for clay render (learnt how to do properly, sorry for different camera angle), did a beauty too but it looks awful :D I'll be there in a few months :P

Neil_F01 - cheers , it indeed takes us back a few years :p, ye the model is refering to the recent release, but i am more of a fan of the old school movie.
paulius-st - SPARTAAAAAA ! nice one and really comical ! the super soaker 007 is a great idea and made me smile big time.
timberwo7ves - a beauty render would be really nice indeed. hope u can make one until the times up. !
vicban3d - really nice entry with the gear from 300, but i am missing a movie font accompany the scene.

i sculpted from a pre made basemesh lol ..... do u expect moddelin n sculp both in 90 mins ? hehehe.

paulius-st
21-04-2011, 09:44 AM

lonelymonk - thanks man :) . hmmm, i'm curious, will anyone mind if i'll post a bigger than 1280X1024 render. something like 2400X1800.??? cause smaller render wont show all the details.

timberwo7ves
21-04-2011, 12:50 PM
I have no objections - I want to see some close up wires of some of the letters (I couldn't add loops in such a way to get smoothing without pinching); is anyone willing to post these (or better the original scene files)? Probably elsewhere to stop this thread from being cluttered with unrelated things :]

paulius-st
21-04-2011, 01:00 PM
nice idea timberwo7ves. but as i remember there is a model donation thread in low poly section of forum. there you can find some models. as for letters and loops just create your wip thread and post various issues there. than more people will give you some crits and push you in the right direction in various situations :) . or you can just pm me your screan shots of these problem letters and i'll see what could be done :) .

updated my entry with a beauty render. :) and i put a bigger one in to my sketchbook.

no not consecutively, as long as when summed it doesn't exceed the limit allowed

paulius-st
21-04-2011, 07:40 PM
it makes noise :) . thats the whole point of it. as i understand the rules you can take breaks. as long as your modeling takes 90 minutes. there is no restriction of breaks. i do those models while drinking coffe so i usualy take 2 sesions of 40 min and if needed i'm using 10 i have left.

ZooRocket
21-04-2011, 10:34 PM

well this SMC proved to be the hardest one for me - a lot of work, no time to think outside the box, and i spent 3 days on getting reference photos, capturing screenshots from movies, noting the plan of modeling etc...

not really proud of topology and the letters are just max letters with extrude - had no time to fiddle with them. The logo should have been properly welded, but again i was reaching my 90 min limit without the letters so i just cloned and rotated it to fit the bill.

0 for imagination when compared to other entries, hope it's not a total loss

a bit down,
yours truly roc

ZooRocket - nice touch on the poster. didn't like the movie though.

ClassicGamer-3DT
22-04-2011, 07:02 AM
Rocneasta - that is a superb entry, love the detailing, you've got that creation down perfectly. Don't worry too much about the ngons, I myself used to use booleans in the early days and hated myself for doing so. The only thing that's missing for me is that text needs a little bevel/chamfer and that's it, so don't be too hard on yourself, you've got a solid and brilliant entry there!

rocneasta
22-04-2011, 07:11 AM

@roc epic entry, but I disagree about the 0 for imagination - I think it fits the bill of the challenge brief well :)

@marley cool render :)

@meauxable I like the yellow part of the texture. I think the two corners at the top could have been slightly sharper, but it reflects really well and looks nice and clean (Y)
