Not sure what to think of this really. It looks cool and all but I still think that Pixologic is trying too hard to make Zbrush a complete 3D package instead of improving what made it a must-have in the CG industry.
What I really want in Zbrush is a set of texturing tools that doesn't require a ridiculous amount of polys to paint, I want layer managers and the ability to paint bump and specular maps directly on the model and support for Ptex so that I don't have to go through the tedious process of unwrapping the entire model, I simply don't care about rendering in Zbrush, I have other applications for that.

I think the new materials look quite good actually... I think they think of this as another process of making Zbrush a complete conceptualizing program, not singularly sculpting. Would be nice to see better texturing tools though, agreed, and perhaps joints and a simple IK for the transpose tool as well as a decent layer system for sculpting...

agreed really - what its really lacking is precision transform tools and some sort of consistency between the units you export in and zbrush units.
oh, and a proper layer system but we all knew that

Yeah about the units - why can't they manage a proper perspective system!?

to be fair, if you want that stuff you could just buy mudbox.

I do have Mudbox (student version yay)
I just like Zbrush better and it saddens me to see that the developers are going in an entirely different direction than what was intended :hurt:

Well it was intended as a fun tool for artists right, and if artists can they make the entirety of their model inside of zbrush in a fun and decently simple manner then I do believe they have succeeded :).
Would like to see more simple texturing tools though, I agree, all this cloning should be able to do but you shouldn't have to! Regarding Ptex I think that will be thoroughly developed for Mudbox first hand as Pixar uses that pretty heavily...

they are just showing 1 little feature, considering their past updates i'm sure there's gonna be lots of other cool stuff, and i wouldn't at all be surprised if they also did some major changes to the texturing and layering tools, people have been screaming for a more 3dcoat/bodypaint like texturing system since zbrush 2, atleast, thats what i'm hoping for the most.
