The Challenge Rules

1). Each challenge we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modeling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief can be removed and the poster disqualified.

2). You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified.

3). Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like and must include a clear and easy to see wireframe of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Wire renders/ Cell Shaded or Screengrab wireframes are acceptable. Any wireframes we cannot see correctly will be disqualified. The key is for us to be able to see the wireframes clearly to ascertain how you modelled the subject matter.

4). You MUST include the following details with each submission:

A). Software used
B). Time spent creating the model.

Any further information is voluntary but posts not containing the required information can be removed and the poster disqualified.

5). Post TWO images per entry which must be no larger than 1280x1024 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 195k.
1 image for your wireframes and 1 for your clay combined with a optional beauty render.
These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page.
Do not link to external images files. Images larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials)
will be removed and the poster disqualified.

6). The creation of displacement maps, normal maps and any splines drawn out in an external program other than your modeling software are to be included in your modeling time.

7). Time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the allocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post it as long as it's recognizable.

8). Posting the same entry twice in a challenge is considered to be double posting and will result in a disqualification. When asked to fix a previous post due to DQ or any other reason, you must fix the first post, or delete it altogether and create a new one.

9). The Winner must email jo@3dtotal.com to claim their prize.

10). Only 1st place & 2nd place (i.e. the runner up) can claim a prize.

These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions!

Subject: Street Fighter
Deadline - 10:00PM GMT Friday 6th May 2011
Description: The Street Fighter games are the most successful video games of it's genre. It's creator's Capcom set the benchmark recipe for future beat 'em up games. If it wasn't for Street Fighter they would never have been Mortal Kombat or Tekken or a whole host of other fighting games. The blend of beautiful & colourful stages, diverse (albeit stereotypical) characters & excellent sound effects and music with lightning fast gameplay made this a must for all kinds of gamers. It had everything from 100 hand slapping sumo's & electro shocking beastmen to yoga elasticated enthusiasts & martial arts masters. The series is now 20 years old and as a tribute this is your chance to model anything featured in any of the Street Fighter games, this could be a stage, a character, a prop or even the title logo. You are free to interpret/re-interpret any of the above as you like. Oh one more thing.......... HADOUKEN!
Modelling Time: 90 Mins.

Prizes:

1st Place - Ģ30 worth of 3DTotal downloadable products & a gold award badge.
2nd Place - Ģ10 worth of 3DTotal downloadable products & a silver award badge.
Honourable Mentions - Bronze Award Badges

Above All Else Have Fun & Good Luck!

Great :) I wanted to do Blanka but had enough troubles with Ryu's hair, Blanka has chest, arm and a huge head of hair. Might do something else later in the week.

you can do what you want for the beauty render - even animate it if you want . just ceep your clay and wire renders untutched by all this rigging and extra work :) thats how i understand it.:)

I think Ocin wanted to make the char in a t-pose, and have the clay posed nicely using his rig :D

I think Ocin wanted to make the char in a t-pose, and have the clay posed nicely using his rig :D

so whats the point of clay and wires then? the better we can see the structure of the model the better we can see how its made. some and most poses hide lots of technicly valuable visual info that is given by wires and clay :) . thats why we have beauty renders - in these reders you can show your model from a best perspective you can think of and go wild with post processing. i may be wrong, but its my personal opinion :)

I learnt a new term: 'pixel aspect ratio correction' :S sorry for the dodgy renders.
0 marks for clean modelling; inside faces and unnecessary edgeloops.

added a textured render, probably won't have time to do it nicely this week, so that's it til next SMC. can't wait to see everyone elses :]

Really pleased with such an early positive reaction. I might have to model the arcade cabinet myself, I remember playing Street Fighter I and playing a Ryu with red hair and it being quite hard to progress. Then Street Fighter II came along and I went for Ken who was like a psycho ryu character and fell in love with he game from then on. Having to learn the six button combo's and special moves was a challenge but a great game. Especially in the school's youth club and doing the winner stay's on trying to defeat the best players there. Alot of the girls playing the game would opt for the bash any button effect and strangely win alot more as they would go as the only girl in the game Chun Li and skank (slang for cheat) by repeatdly pushing the hurrican kick move. Unless you were Ryu, Ken or Blanka you'd lose. When Street Fighter II turbo came to the Snes that was when I was in my element and remember playing it long into the night at various levels to try and get better. I also remember an arcade version that was at a fair that was hacked called the rainbow hack which allowed mid air attacks and fireballs, so much so that on guile's stage you could walk on top of the jet wing and on top of the baths in e honda's stage, and there was a cheat that allowed you to go behind the fence on Vega's stage, so all you needed to do was hit vega a few times and leap behind until the timer ran out to win :) For some reason the Japanese version had character names changed, either that or the european names were changed as Bison was the original name for Balrog, and Vega was M Bison etc etc, also I remember vividly a arcade cab at a kid's club that had Street Fighter II World Warrior with Akuma unlocked, which must have been hacked as he was a hidden character in the Championship Edition.

Anyway off to model something else, maybe a mashup of a famous character dressed as a street fighter character lol.

rocneasta - thanks man :) . its all in how you split you mesh in parts and how you can cut some corners. i think i'll make blanka too :) , and as allways - cartoon style :). and if i'll have enough time i'll capture it on video how i do it from concepting stage to modeling.

i have to confess -blanka allways reminded me of I.R Baboon :D

one thing paulius did you find good reference of blanka - i'm looking for front and side view but i can't find any... just loads of fan art and in game pose... will be hard to model if i don't get the reference just right

well i rarely use blueprints and there is not much of reference for blanka so i made some little sketches my self but they are kind of chaotic directional and suggestive doodles on paper that show some key areas of character . and my blanka is stylised :) , so mostly it is modeled in freestyle depending only on imagination and intuition :D .

but here are all i use for it. maybe they will help you.

I use formatFactory to convert my video files - you can set file quality and dimensions which should help reduce a lot :) (dunno how much from 1.2GB though :P)

You got Quicktime Pro on your machine? Load it in there and export it as Quicktime movie with an H264 codec. Optionally (Without having quicktime Pro) you could use a program like Adobe Premiere or any other editing program even After Effects to export with the same settings, you still need to have the normal quicktime player installed.

I know you work on Windows but with Mac Quicktime has a build-in recorder that saves to H264 with about 650kbit/s on a 1280x800 screen its still clear video and only 20MB for a 4 Min video.

SMC:
My model just crashed, I was making a (too) high-poly fence and I started duplicating, at some point I had 1.2Mil polygons selected and pressed duplicate while the option where still set to: create 20 duplicates. Then it crashed... Now my machine has trouble doing anything...

timberwo7ves, Edwiersma - thanks for tips guys. if i'll get the same s**t for my 2'd video i'll try them. here is a video of first 30min of modeling. realy sorry for bizare qualitie but this is what i've got . srunk the file from 1.2Gb to 140mb. just wanted to sucker-punch the guy who made a tutorial about timelaps setings for cam studio(a total moron he is hrrrr). i'll try xvid codek this time.

Edwiersma - <puts a hand on his shoulder and taps it a few times> i know exacteley how you feel - done this mistake a few times making my model have 30mil. polys and crashed :( .

paulius-st bit late.. but Any Video Converter (http://www.any-video-converter.com/products/for_video_free/) is free and pretty good, couldn't be much simpler to use. I use it quite often for converting .mkv's to play on my xbox.. cool video too, pretty impressed with the amount on detail in such a small amount of time, look forward to seeing this finished, Blanka was by far one of my favourite characters.

Awesome topic!

And some great entrees already here, but all i can say is: "Go home and be a family man!"
modelling: full 90 minutes. made in 3ds max 2010.
Worked my ass off to finish this in the time given and still loads of details I wanted to put in, but quite happy with the result. Will rig, pose and render him soon enough but wanted to post.
edit: updated with renders and some more wires.

lonelymonk - its a pitty that you cant participate. it would be interesting to see what you would come up with :) .

so here is my 3'rd entry . M.Bison. with a little twist :D. his uniform reminds me of those sado mazo folk with their lether wips and latex cloth :D.
beauty will come latter

edit: finaly got camstudio settings set right and uploaded the second modeling session of 35min to vimeo . here is a link http://www.vimeo.com/23264210

hope to make one decent modeling session of making a character from start to finish with voice (hope nobody would fall asleep listening to it) so people, that find organic modeling hard to do, would have some visual info how to aproach it.

With domwar 5 and polycount brawl close to finishing it might be possible more people show up if extended.
But I think the topic itself might not give as much freedom as some other smc's, which could explain the low amount of entries. (a complete character or stage is quite hard to finish in the time given)

Btw, I dont think I have the time for another entry or a new smc next week, but I would like a bit more competition and see more Street Fighter art.

you know.. my only problem with this comp.. is the time limit.. i know its a speed modelling comp.. and you time frame is a thing...

but for a subject like this we need to look more realistically i think at thing.. like say maybe 4 - 6 hrs.. of work...

as in 4 to 6 hour.. i bet most people would take a stab at the a character...

and no offence to the toon guy.. they look cool...

its just an opinion.. nothing more..

i'll carry on. i'm bored.. its 6am.. long night of writing.. but anyway...

when you did the comp for the drinks.. 90 mins is a good enough time to produce something that could win..

but say if we did a comp.. say.. for like... miniture tech robots.. 90 mins is no way enough to really get kinda models that people wanna see up on the walls.. right.. you;d want at least 120 - 240 mins of time.. perhaps.. its a more realistical time frame.. for the models your expecting or hoping to see in the comp..

i mean at the moment.. i'm stumped for ideas.. i could either spend some time.. trying to create my own fireball.. or sonic boom blast.. with particles.. i mean thats a 90 min job..

but i couldnt make a character that i could feel happy with in that time frame..

dont take it personally.. or anyhting.. i'm not being nasty about anything... i'm just merely pointing out something that might have been over looked..

which is the question.. what are you hoping to see people create. in this comp..

Trouble with "speed" challenge that has a time frame of 4-6 hours, is that very few people would enter. Only due to the significant time that they don't have and need to spend on modeling. There would also be a significant difference in model complexity because organisation and research would be as important as the speed in modeling.

Perhaps you're right about the limit beying small, but in my opinion it moves most of us (except paulius) out of our comfort zone, and that's the only way to progress!

I agree, it is difficult, but it helps you improve on planning something before you start, as time is so little, and also while you're working, discovering shortcuts that you could potentially use in a larger-scale project to knock hours or days off overall.

i know there been some changes of the rules about number of posts vs showing of the signature and portfolio button, but you can always ask in the portfolio thread LINK HERE (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?t=59516&highlight=portfolio+button) or message Tom about it

I'm afraid your entry will not be allowed as Z Brush is not allowed in the Speed Modelling Challenges.

Nice vega's!

I like the short time limit btw, any longer and competing is no longer a spur of the moment thing.
Competing in smc's has improved my modelling a ton, made me think of modelling tricks and simply improved my workflow. So what i want to say with this is even when you think you need 5 hours to complete such a model. To just model it and analyze what you did afterwards is still a very valuable experience.

Agreed, I've only done a few of these and it's really made me reappraise my workflow. I took the time to learn the new graphite modelling tools in max to try and improve my speed for these and I don't even use the old tools anymore. I think the time limit is about right.

this is a first for me, but i can't start and finish my entry for this SMC. Just came home and still have a few reports to fill in before I can start to relax with some modeling.

I will give a promise to finish this idea, so will let you know via my improvement thread.

Great entries and once again i'm sorry... I failed this time

hey CG, so there is no use of Zbrush allowed, but what about Mudbox on texturing?

Ok so this is my first challenge. And like an idiot I didn't know we couldn't use Zbrush.....so I did. Anyways....I posted what I got. I know it doesn't count...but I worked hard for that hour and a half. LOL I made the base mesh in 45 min in modo and 45 min in zbrush shaping and texturing. I ran out of time on the hair.

Used for texturing purposes yes but no z brush or mudbox for modelling. Although you can normally create fairly descent bump and normal maps without needing sculpted information..... I may be wrong I dunno.

My entry for this week - Dhalsim! :D

Modelled in 3Ds Max 2008 in 84 minutes.
The cloth and its simulation were part of modelling time.

This has been a speed challenge week for me in real life, so please excuse the untextured arm. I have been very close to skipping this weeks round. But then... when I finally got the idea about the entry this afternoon, I just could not let go :)

nice new entries. especialy i like dhalsim :D . made me smile.
as fro time limit extension - 90 min is enough. from my own experiance i can say that this is very resonable time limit and smoetimes (ok most of times) a client wants to see some progress on the concept in about 1-2 hours. so there is no talk about the qualitie of the models but the main reason is to try to push your concept of given task as much as you can so you could show in what direction you will move it. most of times these 90min are what you have to get the job.

sounds like there are quite a few zbrush ppl on the forums who are in need of speed sculpting challenges. Will we be seeing the speed sculpting challenges return any time soon, like the good old days?

congrats 2 all who finished :)
