The Challenge Rules

1). Each challenge we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modeling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief can be removed and the poster disqualified.

2). You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified.

3). Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like and must include a clear and easy to see wireframe of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Wire renders/ Cell Shaded or Screengrab wireframes are acceptable. Any wireframes we cannot see correctly will be disqualified. The key is for us to be able to see the wireframes clearly to ascertain how you modelled the subject matter.

4). You MUST include the following details with each submission:

A). Software used
B). Time spent creating the model.

Any further information is voluntary but posts not containing the required information can be removed and the poster disqualified.

5). Post TWO images per entry which must be no larger than 1280x1024 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 195k.
1 image for your wireframes and 1 for your clay combined with a optional beauty render.
These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page.
Do not link to external images files. Images larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials)
will be removed and the poster disqualified.

6). The creation of displacement maps, normal maps and any splines drawn out in an external program other than your modeling software are to be included in your modeling time.

7). Time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the allocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post it as long as it's recognizable.

8). Posting the same entry twice in a challenge is considered to be double posting and will result in a disqualification. When asked to fix a previous post due to DQ or any other reason, you must fix the first post, or delete it altogether and create a new one.

9). The Winner must email jo@3dtotal.com to claim their prize.

10). Only 1st place & 2nd place (i.e. the runner up) can claim a prize.

These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions!

Hi everyone :-D.
I have really good mood and when I saw that the challenge had no entries I decided to do something really really fast just for fun, maybe to make you smile :D. About 40 minutes of modeling in 3ds Max :).

Peas - Fantastic entry! Really very well modelled for the time frame. I've been trying to get my starter rendered out but life has got in the way. I've been trying to create the Chinese Water Torture Chamber that Houdini used, it should come soon.

what caused the hat's segments to crunch - that was a quick and dirty way of doing it or :) lathe perhaps?

ClassicGamer-3DT
09-05-2011, 03:55 PM
Updated the starting page with my starter, nothing special but glad I finally managed to get it done. Not happy with the shaders at all tho especially the water shader, I wanted to add water bubbles and a dead houdini but only got so far :(. Interesting note that Houdini didn't die at the hands of any of his tricks....... it was actually due to a punch in the stomach from a fan that lead to problems with his pancreas.

what caused the hat's segments to crunch - that was a quick and dirty way of doing it or :) lathe perhaps?

that hat edge is just a lousy modeling issue - been too lazy to clean up some triangles and give it a few more loops so it would be perfect :D.
i rearley use lathe - its much faster to use simple cylinder and than form a shape from there adding edge loops.

ClassicGamer - nice one. wouldnt want to try this trick :)

So, i don't know if we have to add info into the images, but I sense SMC more as great fun than kind of challenge :). Sometimes is hard to understand rules... for me :D.

Rules:
4). You MUST include the following details with each submission:

A). Software used
B). Time spent creating the model.

P.S.: If info have to be placed in the image I can do that :haha:.

Paulius-st: Ahahaaa :D It looks like younger brother of Jarjar :D. Lovely.

subscribed /and kinda wished for a longer turntable experience :)

going to loop it :p

i agrea - turntable could be longer : slower and a pair of turns more, but i only had 5 minutes so i rendered only 100frames :hmm: .

next time i promise it will be a decent turntable with sound (if i'll find a music to fit it). wanted to add a eat 3d intro sound but its a custom made 55 second music so i cant get it :ugh:. would like to get it for my reel and mix it with "requiem for a dream" :)

I tried to model some of the objects used by magicians, but failed a bit... :hmm:

Ok finally found some time to model something. I didn't had a concept and just started modeling so his head came out really ugly ;P
I don't think that I find the time to texture and rig him...but we will see!
Cool entries so far! :)

Hoping for some time to enter this one tonight, I think my entry will make no sense unless you watched kids TV in the UK in the 80s.

lonelymonk
12-05-2011, 02:49 PM
In the 80's I remember watching the gnomic magician Paul Daniels and strange conical sidekick Wizbit enchant us with tails of the evil machinations of Professor Doom and conjuring. This entry is an homage to a misspent childhood. For those who were not fortunate enough to have had their young personalities shaped by the antics of wizbit, here is a snippet.

Youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zVf7wNnVbI0)

Modelled in 3ds max, hastily textured using photoshop and rendered in vray. Pretty basic modelling but I didn't want to miss another SMC.

ClassicGamer-3DT
12-05-2011, 04:29 PM
Oh my god I remember Wizbit!!!! It's actually quite scary to see it now, but totally remember Paul Daniels, he also sang the theme tune and a disturbing rabbit too!

Wow so many memories, excellent entry.

lonelymonk
12-05-2011, 11:18 PM
@CG Thanks, I like to imagine that the rabbit was the inspiration for Donnie Darko. I've been teaching all day and none of the students had ever heard of Wizbit, then I realised all my colleagues were younger than me too and had also never heard of him. Made me feel pretty old...

ClassicGamer-3DT
12-05-2011, 11:28 PM
"Ostaphalousala that was the magic word, Ostaphalousala my oh my, you can do magic, magic magic.... magic a rabbit 8 feet high"! Well I don't consider myself that old really, i'll be 32 this year...so.....yeah....I probably am old compared to who you're teaching. lol.
