The Battle Is On
So Big-Toe-3DT, Paulis-st, Tycane3D and I have decided to start our own sculpting head on versus thread.
The theme is Mythological Creatures - Beasts From Beyond and what you go for and how you interpret it is entirely up to you. Redesigning and reimagining is encouraged but not necessary.
All tools and programs allowed as long as one does not use more pre-made content other than a simple base mesh (i.e general head/body shape).
High poly and Low poly are both approved but remember that this is a sculpting challenge and that is where the focus should be.
Deadline is two weeks from now, so that means that everything that one wants to be judged should be handed in by the 25th of May.
WIP images are all to be kept in this thread and chit chatter, advice and critique are all equally encouraged.
Let's get this party started!!

good idea :D . maybe if my concept wont be too horrible to show i'llpost it here. thinking of a vampire beast. it scares the most sh## out of me from my selections :D . have seen dracula some days ago - francis ford copola's directed (the only good version of this B.stockers book) now i'm going to find some more reference and grab my tablet. long scary evening avaits
here is a directional picture so you could know what to expect from me

is it ok if I just do a bust, or does it need to be a full body character?
paulius-st
11-05-2011, 07:11 PM
bust is ok with me :) . full character is more interesting but if you want to do a bust - do it. :) i my self will do a full character.
hulahuga
11-05-2011, 07:43 PM
Yepp, as long as you express the character fully it doesn't matter really....
paulius-st

well, i'll be the first one to start. here is my base mesh. done with zspheres.

Cool, you should probably add some extra edgeloops for eyes, mouth and ears, just so you don't have to retopo as early on...

12-05-2011, 01:46 PM
Looks like a good start, I would wait with painting in the eyes though and just put in two spheres in the eye sockets
I would further define the face and the neck, perhaps go up a subdivision and go crazy :)

Yet another update, Having fun :). Looking forward on seeing more from you guys.
hulahuga
12-05-2011, 05:31 PM
kk, there is nowthing wrong with it, but you will definitely have a harder time viewing the rest with the same eyes when you work on it ;) (or at least that is my thought)
Can't start working on mine 'til wednesday... :grr: But I will keep on acting cheer on until then!
paulius-st
12-05-2011, 09:49 PM
kirgan - looking good . she reminds me of dineys mermaid :D . i have a suggestion that would make her fit the style a little more and look better IMO. but its only my opinion :)
1. try to raise her nose about an inch higher and make transition betvien her forhead and nose smoother. cause now her nose looks like something sticked it randomly to her face
2. her eyebrows are too wide. make them smaller. you are stylising her so she doesn't have to be too close to real life proportions and mesures :) .
3. her eyes - detail them a bit - they need life
i did a little photo doodle to show what i mean :) .
ceep it up. will wait for more updates.
as for my sculpt - monday i'll have time so i'll sculpt some of it :)

13-05-2011, 09:34 PM
Guys, you need to do something, would love to see some work from you.
Update from me again then.. :P Worked on the hair, still some to do with it. But it's getting there.
paulius-st
16-05-2011, 07:02 AM
lookinbg nice :) . about the hair - it lacks detail. more lox'es or folds (dont know how to say in english) would encrease the detail level of hair. and pay atention to her shoulders. now they look realy strange.

Looking good man, good stuff.
I feel like a (bigger) douche now, but i have to withdraw, after a couple of months our company revealed the deadline of an in-house animation contest we are doing last Friday, and i need to focus all my 3d attention on that now, so i cant compete in this one.
Sorry for that.

He has a cut off penis...Btw is it on purpose that you have asymmetry on the mid part of the legs?
But it looks good so far, the back especially. :)
paulius-st
16-05-2011, 05:04 PM
hulahuga - thanks man :) . well now its a cut off penis but i'm thinking to do it like dogs and other animals have - when time comes to play it sticks out but when its not in use it stays in his place like a little button :) .
as for asymetry on legs its not on purpose - i just took a screengrab before i did "smart resym" on its legs :) . it will be asymetrical but in later progress when i'll pose him and give detail. now its just the shaping process :) .
and hulahuga. where is your progress?
here is a start on his head. just playing with light and shaping his head.

16-05-2011, 05:07 PM
Nice to see that someone else has started :P. Not much to say yet, looking forward for more.
I have gone away on the single character and will do a little scene. So it of the theme. But if you want I can still post some updates later on.

16-05-2011, 05:34 PM
Sure do show it.
You could count it as a pedestal perhaps ;)

paulis - Ah, so why not work with symmetry on all the time? Either way as I said my sculpting starts wednesday-thursday ;)
well , i work on single body part at a time cause its more convenient and more comfortable for me. and when all the body exept this leg is hidden symetry doesnt work. so i have to sacrafise up to 10 seconds to save hour of work :) .
bgen - wellcome to the figt :) . it more fun when there are more people :) .
nice base mesh you have there :) . what creature it will be? siren, harpy? ..?
waiting for more progress
kirgan - you were so lonely here so i came to acompanie you :) . as for your scene - comon and show us :) .maybe you will ispire more of us to do the same :)
paulius-st
16-05-2011, 10:41 PM
i'm calling it done for today :) . about 3-4 hour of work put in to it and i'm kind of happy where it goes. expecting some scary sh@@ out ofit :D .
below is a over paint i did so you guys could help me decied the direction for it to go. the left and rigt sides are diferent a little and it would be nice to hear witch one looks or fits better the character. i my self kind of like the right one.

paulius-st
17-05-2011, 12:11 PM
thanks guys :) . hula - i must agrea with you :) . sculpting all that hair would take an immence amount of time for me :) . ofcource i coud play with hair and fur in max or fur in zbrush but i dont see any reason to do this. :) . maybe i'll add some hair in some places but i'll stick with shaved version for now :) .
here is a final base sculpt . all main shapes expet teeth, claws and ears are put to its places.
paulius-st
17-05-2011, 01:07 PM
did a little posing test. i think something like this should look nice for my vampire :) . ofcourse its not a final pose and when i do it it will be posed properley - cleaned up and all bones will be thought off :) .
but fir now a pose test turntable ( http://vimeo.com/23855593)
paulis - the vampire start to look real cool mate, also i am more in favor on the Left side of u're sketch !
in the pose video it seem like another vampire or creature from the sky is approaching him, just before striken to death :lame:
here is my progress of today, btw. i removed the hands from the basemodel.
hey guys, i updated my matcaps, if you want to have a go with em - here is a

tried them. nice matcaps. i especialy liked these 5: blueman, dramatic portrait, flesh, grey, zombie . they are realy nice to work with.
glad u find some of my mats useful ;).
not happy with the feathers probably will redo them again when the main body and face is finished, but
it's just to get the idea where i am going and what else todo :p.
paulius-st
18-05-2011, 10:53 AM
bgen - its taking shape . looks interesting. i dont know in what stage is your models body but i'm guessing by a subdivision level that it is far away from a base shape blocking so i have a crit or two :).
her boobs have wrong shape - they are too angular and not round enough.
her legs are too big and out of shape a little.
her shopulders could use some smoothing and better transition with chest muscles.
her trapezious muscles are acting wrong. they must inflate a little .
and the whole model could use some smoothing.
as for the feathers i have a suggestion to you. make them as planes in a feather shape and incerease in numbers. it looks akward when a wing has only 10 feathers. when you create you feathers unwrap them and find a texture of a single feather. than manipulate that photo so it becomes black and white with some level corection - this will be your mask for bump in zbrush. than fit your photo to uvw map of feather model. than go to zbrsuh and aply this photo as a texture. then mask from texture and inflate it with deformation menu. and here you have a nice feather. than save it as subtool and apend it to your main mesh :) . it takes about 10min to do it. ofcourse you can do it the hard way and sculpt them but this will take a lot of time .

hula - show us your base mesh or skining as you call :). whats your creature from beyond?
so here is my start on detailing. a first out of 3 detail pases
hulahuga
18-05-2011, 06:37 PM
Okay finally! :D
So I did do an original base mesh in zbrush from zpheres but then I realised that the edgeflow was all freaked out and that I would change and add to the mesh anyway. So thus I went ahead from a zbrush base mesh (yes feel free to slap me for that ;P)
Anyways I am going for a Satyr... Head, hands, back and stomach are nearing the result I want but I might rework the face quite a lot to get a bit more of a mythological feeling, plus I originally wanted a more younger being... Let's see how I can rework this.

*SLAP* (http://gifb.in/ivsV)
you know my position about zbrush base meshes - useles peaces of @#%*
:D
and why you didnt add some edge loops with zspheres like i did by your suggestion - now my vampire has good enough edgeflow and needs no retopo??
ok, enough beating. sculpt looks good for now but i like the first version more - second version has this retard look in it. satyr is a very good choise imo. maybe cause they look cool or maybe cause they are one of my favourite characters from myths.
what i dont like - horns. they look very chaotic and without structure. i suggest building base forms using lots of mask and clay tubes. and strokes should go in the direction the horns go. than you get this nice pattern horns have. me thinks i'll do a timelapse of a few minutes sculpt to show what i mean.
ceep it up. you're on a good path.
hulahuga
18-05-2011, 07:58 PM
K, thanks! :)
I actually like the second one better though as it is more in order with the original myth (even though yes he has a slightly different look, but that is cool in its own sense), but I will push the concept further and definitely rework the horns ;)

here is a little progres. quickly sculpted ears for him . their shape is referenced from a original vampire bat . detailing will come with head's details :) . and played a little with this new bpr in zbrsuh 4 :). quite intersting feature but worthless if you need some more advanced result than a simple model showcase with some simple material setup.

24-05-2011, 04:04 AM
I hope you guys don't mind, but I did up a low poly "raptor" type creature awhile back. I'm thinking I could take it much further and practice my mudbox at the same time, but I don't want you guys to call me a cheater.
If it comes down to it, I just post my wips in here, just to keep with the fun. Only 2 days left. lets see some updates.
hulahuga
24-05-2011, 09:39 AM
Hmm. Well as long as it is quite primitive then it is okay, (just make sure to post a shot of it). If you do the raptor you'll have to think about how it will fit with the mythological aspect (the brief)...
Anyways, time for an update on my part!
Been away this weekend, so I haven't had any time to work on it... But I gave it a shot today and made a spaulder (shoulder plate)! :)

Well most main forms seem to be there as far as the head goes... But yeah, that should be okay, unless anyone else has any objections :)
You will have a hard time though as it is all tris... So you might get weird edgeflow when subdividing...
probably won't be able to work more on the harpy - since my granny got hospitalized today and i will go and visit her.
here the wip/final piece. crappy i know, but it's something:lame::evil:

nah, it's mostly polys. I was using light tracer, it triangulates everything in the scene. But it doesn't trully mess with the mesh.

Hey guys, I'm basically done but my zbrush is freaking out... When I sculpt something it shows this odd edge around my brushstroke but when I change view (move the camera) it shows the real version, what's up with that?
the turntable says that it is processing on vimeo ;)
paulius-st
02-06-2011, 01:35 PM
hulahuga - the same sh%% happens to me too in zbrush4. i think its some kind of a bug . but latter it disapears. this happens to me while texturing. just ignore this edge :).
i poisted the video once i uploaded it to vimeo so it has this half an hour processing time :) . its ok now to watch. :) . i'll post a pose soon.

hula - looks nice . its a pitty that you didnt have too much time to spend on this one. i hope you will ceep your promise and continue to sculpt it after the comp. :)
well my sculpt has came to an end too. i know that there are lots of room for improvement in this one but its time to call it done and move on. i have a little red riding hood and a big bad woolf models pending :D.
here is a clay render i made with v-ray. lots of detailed got absorbed by lighting and material but i got the clay result i wanted. i will make some zbrush renders and post them latter . maybe a turntable too. and if i'll have time i'll texture it.
edit: here are my final shots. tomorrow i'll post a turntable.

A model is not good solely because of its complexity ;) Finding that perfect form can actually be even harder.
Well the deadline was yesterday so
VOTING BEGINS!
VOTING RULES
Everyone in the forum gets to cast a 1,2,3 vote on the models of their choosing. No one may cast a vote on their own model...
1st=3pt
2nd=2pt
3rd=1pt
The model with the highest number of points by the end of the sessions wins the secret price of the dancing banana...
All sculpts may be continued in this thread or, if one so wishes, in another one, but the end result should be shown here later on, just for the fun of it ;)
