The Challenge Rules

1). Each challenge we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modeling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief can be removed and the poster disqualified.

2). You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified.

3). Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like and must include a clear and easy to see wireframe of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Wire renders/ Cell Shaded or Screengrab wireframes are acceptable. Any wireframes we cannot see correctly will be disqualified. The key is for us to be able to see the wireframes clearly to ascertain how you modelled the subject matter.

4). You MUST include the following details with each submission:

A). Software used
B). Time spent creating the model.

Any further information is voluntary but posts not containing the required information can be removed and the poster disqualified.

5). Post TWO images per entry which must be no larger than 1280x1024 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 195k.
1 image for your wireframes and 1 for your clay combined with a optional beauty render.
These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page.
Do not link to external images files. Images larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials)
will be removed and the poster disqualified.

6). The creation of displacement maps, normal maps and any splines drawn out in an external program other than your modeling software are to be included in your modeling time.

7). Time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the allocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post it as long as it's recognizable.

8). Posting the same entry twice in a challenge is considered to be double posting and will result in a disqualification. When asked to fix a previous post due to DQ or any other reason, you must fix the first post, or delete it altogether and create a new one.

9). The Winner must email jo@3dtotal.com to claim their prize.

10). Only 1st place & 2nd place (i.e. the runner up) can claim a prize.

These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions!

Subject: Household Ornaments.
Deadline - 10:00PM GMT Friday 20th May 2011
Description: Many people like to collect ornaments, they can range from delicate diecast models & souveniers to money boxes & garden gnomes. These trinkets are kept in the garden, in a corner of the room, in dedicated display cabinets or simply upon the mantlepiece. In this challenge you are set with the task of modelling any of the aformentioned items. It could be a souvenier tug boat, a toby jug, a piggy bank or money box, a corgi replica car or a Todd McFarlane/DC/Marvel posed die cast action figurine in a display case. You have plenty to choose from, the level of difficulty for this challenge is determined by how you interpret the theme. You could make it easy for yourself by modelling a simplistic book end or you can go all out and create high detailed gnome, the choice is yours.
Modelling Time: 120 Mins.

1st Place - £30 worth of 3DTotal downloadable products & a gold award badge.
2nd Place - £10 worth of 3DTotal downloadable products & a silver award badge.

Finally had some spare time to model something! I only used half of the time limit but hope its good enough anyway.
CG, your starter is awesome, it made me look again to make sure the time limit isn't 5 hours.
I won't be able to do another entry so good luck to everyone!

I've got a wicked idea for an entry...... years ago around 1988 I had a brilliant money box which consisted of Ghostbusters Slimer sat on top of a ghosttrap with his mouth wide open for the coins to go in! I think I can easily acheive it providing I model slimer first, and after all he's basically a large green face and spindley arms..... we shall see.

Hey, i think ill actually manage a entry this week (maybe 2 even) since my current model is finished and currently working on finishing the renders and layout of the final image.
Though that has to continue later as its pretty late/early in the night ;)

Heres a little hint:

Managed to get a bit done in my lunch break, not ideal working conditions but I'm on my way..

Great starter CG, sets the bar high. Nice entry Vicban, very intricate and new age. I think your entry and my entry are going to fight!

First time I've posted here in a long time, so long i couldn't find my old log in details ;) Great to see the SMC's back though.

Here's my effort, I used the allocated 2 hours and ran out of time, would have like another 30 minutes so i could have added some more edge loops to allow me to smooth the mesh. As it is, its as modeled with no smoothing applied.

I'm very new to rendering (not so new to modeling) and spent a few hours trying to get some nice materials and renders out but really struggled. Hopefully the SMC's will give me a chance to practice my rendering ;)

You can do this using Spline and activating both Enable in Render and Enable in Viewport cheks

Cg, this is a great entry. I feel a bit embarrassed to upload mine now!

Bgen, I'll persevere a little longer I think but if it can't get it right by tomorrow I'll just upload what I have.

Agamer that's a great entry, really nice detailed model in the time.

Wish it could have been a proper entry but I spent far too much time on Slimer. The Ghosttrap ended up taking 28 mins or so. I didn't time it well..... I usually plan, plan, plan and then practice from scratch each time but still didn't manage to get it done in time, but wanted to share anyway. The brush tool in Cinema is a great tool it allows to you pose a character (if you use a big enough brush size) without having to rig the character, I suck at rigging it doesn't interest me and I can't get my head around it. I started as always modelling only half, then collapsing the symmetry object and continuing from there. I'd like to another kind of money box or a gnome and hopefully acheive it i9n the correct time.

Here is my entry, I gave up on refining the Vray fur for the beauty pass. I am going to chalk it up to "things I really need to learn more about". Pretty pleased with the Deer though. Nothing fancy modelling wise, deer head was box modelled, most of the rest started life as splines.

Try to ignore the horn UVs. Ahem.

Thanks for the warm welcome :)

CG - Love the idea, such a shame you ran over :( Did you think about playing with a more translucent shader on slimer? Not sure what your real life money box is like, just though it might look cool ;)

lonelymonk - Just seen your post, nice entry and good use of topology on the head. I like the Photo in the frame of when it was in the wild!
Fur is something i'd also really like to learn more about, I've never tried rendering it before.

I did yeah, I played with alot of dispersion settings and the like but they ramped up render times to nearly 3 times.

Well here we are again... its always such a pleasure!

I actually planned on 2 entries (the second being a Nyan Nyan cat souvenir or something) though... like often, time flew right past me... and ill not be able to make the second one.

Heres my entry!
Its a mineral called Pyrite, its iron disulfide crystalised in almost perfect cubes.
I got some at home, though not with a pretty wooden base and a brass label.
I wish i had though :D

The rock itself was sculpted in a very organic way actually.

Got hit by a wave of inspration this afternoon, thought i would have another crack at this challenge. No time for a beauty render atm, basic render and wire frame only. A money box from aperture, maybe for kids of the employees, or whatever. Saving money with portals...

All the entries so far are really good, really like the robot astroAJ, and especially like the Portal money box thirdchild - great idea.

This is my attempt at a Munny vinyl toy. Im not very pleased with the body and arms to be honest, but time was starting to run out. Wish id had time to do some of the accessories too.

Cool munny, body looks a bit boxy, perhaps relaxing it a bit could help? Was actually thinking about doing one myself, probably gonna try another vinyl figure :). Will be hard since i only have my laptop atm but i really wanna join this contest.

cheers, never used 'relax' before just had a little play around with the body and arms now and they look LOADS better already. still need shaping better though.

I was thinking about taking what id learned here and maybe trying to apply it to make a Dunny if i get chance tomorrow.

edit not gona have chance for another submissions today, but i have messed about with the relax modifier on the body and arms and uploaded a slightly improved version to my blog (http://dantrodgers.wordpress.com/).

indeed a lot of entries this week, probably can't make an entry anymore, i am not at home :(, but i will comment all the same ;).
ClassicGamer
- as stated. a real killer starter, for some Reason he reminds me of a Fat Bruce Lee !
vicban3d - nice dream catcher, got one also @ home on my cardboard on the wall, they are wicked cool.
lonelymonk - my most favorite entry this challange, to sad the beauty didn't come out @ planed, would have been wicked as hell.
Rachel vd M - seen plenty of those stones 2 weeks ago, the the geological museum in vienna. nice clean execution.
thirdchild - good looking ornament there, reminds me of the holy handgranade of Monty Phytons - search for the holy grail. :D funny everything here reminds me of some sort of movie that i have seen.
astroAJ - next to the deer - this is my snd favorite in the smc, clean modelling, will follow up with a beauty render ?
thirdchild - welcome back to the challanges, allways good to see fresh faces here. i really love the portal idea :D.
astroAJ 2nd - really clean modelling
dantrodgers - a munny vinyl was also my idea to do, since all the figurenes are quite complex and hard to model in the time frame.
QUAN - really cute model, i kind of wanna have that thing now.
vicban3d 2nd - a key chain of the eye of Osiris :D *just kid..* really nice modeling, didn't catch @ first that those where actual birds int there.

My entry this week is undead warlock figure from World of Warcraft. Created in 3Ds Max 2008 in 120 minutes. A lot is missing, such as proper staff, skull, more chains... and feet. But with given time I havent been able to make more. :)

This time its not textured, as I am out of time, and this model would require many custom textures. So only clay this week.

Dedicated to Clarks. Thank you again for the figure. :)
