The Challenge Rules

1). Each challenge we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modeling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief can be removed and the poster disqualified.

2). You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified.

3). Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like and must include a clear and easy to see wireframe of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Wire renders/ Cell Shaded or Screengrab wireframes are acceptable. Any wireframes we cannot see correctly will be disqualified. The key is for us to be able to see the wireframes clearly to ascertain how you modelled the subject matter.

4). You MUST include the following details with each submission:

A). Software used
B). Time spent creating the model.

Any further information is voluntary but posts not containing the required information can be removed and the poster disqualified.

5). Post TWO images per entry which must be no larger than 1280x1024 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 195k.
1 image for your wireframes and 1 for your clay combined with a optional beauty render.
These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page.
Do not link to external images files. Images larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials)
will be removed and the poster disqualified.

6). The creation of displacement maps, normal maps and any splines drawn out in an external program other than your modeling software are to be included in your modeling time.

7). Time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the allocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post it as long as it's recognizable.

8). Posting the same entry twice in a challenge is considered to be double posting and will result in a disqualification. When asked to fix a previous post due to DQ or any other reason, you must fix the first post, or delete it altogether and create a new one.

9). The Winner must email jo@3dtotal.com to claim their prize.

10). Only 1st place & 2nd place (i.e. the runner up) can claim a prize.

These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions!

Thanks alot guys, I was pretty happy with the model. I wish my veg that I added to help dress the scene looked better but hey ho. One of the onions looks spot on though which i'm happy about, the green thing was meant to be Brocolli but I left it at the wrong angle and didn't realise till I was half way through rendering and the render took ages! All veg was shader based no textures used there at all. I was happy with the carrots and the bell peppers. Might do another one later.

Correct, lots of playing around with shaders, using noise and different global settings stretched to make scratch maps and bump maps for the carrots and the tiles shader layered with noise channels for the onions and brocolli etc.

Just had another go at this really really took my time with this one, fairly basica modelling but it was nice not needing to rush at all, might try a 3rd one.... maybe a traditional food mixer or something more outlandish etc.

Hey, nice entries coming out!

CG- The brushed steel looks incredible, very well achieved, but 4 hours rendering seems too much. Is c4d that slow rendering?

ClassicGamer-3DT
23-05-2011, 08:07 PM
Nah not usually that slow but i'm on a laptop now and using dispersion and blurred reflections and glass and ambient occlusion with GI and it all adds up.

Here's my entry --

I don't like how the render turned out, but I'm quite satisfied with the model.
Unfortunately, I had no time left to create a handle on the cup. :(

Yeah there was, from time to time challenges get repeated but this is a brand new series of challenges now. Although those 2006 challenges were alot more popular back then :(

They are popular, it's just that we're a lot more older now and a lot more busier than before :(

Robbert I've made that same blender desing will post tonight when I make the beauty renders and composition. Nicely modelled! and good use of polygons.

CG Yeah laptop are s*** when rendering, anyway it is a great render, loving the use of procedurals for the vegs.

SlayerSimple but good looking model! If you allow me an advice, for better looking wireframe take the screenshot with the viewport in shaded mode(look Robbert's wireframes), because it's hard to see when in transparent wireframe.

Don't worry, I think smcs will eventually become popular again, it's just a matter of time!!

silverflame - Now that is perfection!

Thanks CG :) Not really perfection, would have liked to get more detail in there, plus the base is pretty rushed cos the top took most of the time

Hi mates, I was in a bad situation so I didn't make anything to the past smcs,(but I was following them in the shadows from time to time) so here is my humble return. I wanted to make the three buttons the reference image had on the blue circle, but it sure would have taken at about 5 minutes more.

For the liquid I tried to make it look like "gazpacho" a spanish drink made of mixed vegetables.(Very healthy and tasty :D)

Edit: I forgot to say that I used a Philips Blender as reference. Not my desing.

Love the approach with the modelling for this blender, I know the one you mean as i'd found it on my search through google images etc. Modelling looks strong and great clay & beauty too :)

@silverflame = awesome entry was just starting to model this one myself, will choose a reserve now. LOL, fantastic job and clean and well structured modelling

@pables = a great entry, very clean mesh and I love that clay, we will have to start sharing modo stories soon :0)

Great entries everyone, I am trying to get back into 3d as I realize it's really what I want to do with my life.. Haven't posted in quite a while but this idea popped into my head when I read the title so I had a go at it. Would have liked to put more detail into the innards of it but I ran out of time. The three buttons are different blend speeds haha.

Thank you Garner, I'm not an expert, but any advice about modo you may need just ask, I'll be happy if I can be helpful. I remember you asked me about my snail entry some months ago, how're you doing with your Modo learning?

Sarn HAHa, very funny and creative one, and the model is clean and good looking. The beauty render could be improved with a nice studio lighting though.

Here is my entry... I think its that thing that goes bump in the night. I can't be sure. When I hear that bump I usually cower under my blankets and wait for day to come....

There were a lot of repeats so I deleted them from the wire frames for you to see better. If need be I can give you the wire frame with everything there.
Done in 3ds Max
Modeled in about 31 minutes give or take a few seconds.

At least one more is coming! Hope i have enough time for the beauty, but probably not. I just need to upload the entry basically. Too bad there's not that many entries yet!

SilverFlame: Absolute Stunning entry again. Always wonder how you manage to do that much in that little time. Guess it must be real fluency with the tools you work with :)

SarN: Nice conceptual work, funny and goodlooking entry!

Thanks, basically it's lots or hot-keys and a good memory of what's assigned to each key...plus careful planning beforehand, I think that's key otherwise you waste time trying to figure stuff as you go.

Yeah. The careful planning is what's lacking i guess, that's where you can gain a lot of time. I'll see if i can deal with that for the next challenge. Thanks for the insight.

Here is my entry, carried on modelling past the 60 min mark to finish of the model, but only included the meshes that i created in the 60 min in the wire make up for judging. quite happy with the mesh but still learning how to render in modo so not a great effort but run out of time to play with it,

lighting and material set up 30 min roughly
rendering time 3 min (low settings)

Sweet entry Garner.

I'm working on the next SMC artwork, text and starter. It's a big scope this one, lot's of different shapes, sizes and style for you to model. I myself could model at the very least 6 entries straight away that's how big the scope is for this next SMC :)

I don't know if I'll make it but trying to make a chibi like dragon for this SMC...

GaretJaxSozap

Here is the Dragon chibi thing. It "noms" its food into mush, therefore allowing it to be entered... in case you didn't know. Any way good job everyone...
It was done in 3ds max 2011 in about 55 minutes.

Woohoo, i managed to do another entry. Since i wasn't happy with my last entry i changed the approach somewhat, more thinking on beforehand. I'm quite happy with what i actually got done, but there's more speed to be won in several places. Too bad, no more time for beauties :(.

How does that work? A boolean on a smoothed mesh?

How does that work? A boolean on a smoothed mesh?

not got a clue :hmm:
When i tried to do it normally it was deleting completely wrong parts of the model, then i restarted max and it deleted different parts again.. In the end i used Proboolean on a turbosmoothed poly conveted to an editable mesh and that was my result..
