The Challenge Rules
1). Each challenge we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modeling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief can be removed and the poster disqualified.
2). You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified.
3). Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like and must include a clear and easy to see wireframe of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Wire renders/ Cell Shaded or Screengrab wireframes are acceptable. Any wireframes we cannot see correctly will be disqualified. The key is for us to be able to see the wireframes clearly to ascertain how you modelled the subject matter.
4). You MUST include the following details with each submission:
A). Software used
B). Time spent creating the model.
Any further information is voluntary but posts not containing the required information can be removed and the poster disqualified.
5). Post TWO images per entry which must be no larger than 1280x1024 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 195k.
1 image for your wireframes and 1 for your clay combined with a optional beauty render.
These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page.
Do not link to external images files. Images larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials)
will be removed and the poster disqualified.
6). The creation of displacement maps, normal maps and any splines drawn out in an external program other than your modeling software are to be included in your modeling time.
7). Time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the allocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post it as long as it's recognizable.
8). Posting the same entry twice in a challenge is considered to be double posting and will result in a disqualification. When asked to fix a previous post due to DQ or any other reason, you must fix the first post, or delete it altogether and create a new one.
9). The Winner must email jo@3dtotal.com to claim their prize.
10). Only 1st place & 2nd place (i.e. the runner up) can claim a prize.
These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions!
Subject: Audio Devices / Equipment.
Deadline - 10:00PM GMT Friday 3rd June 2011
Description: The world of sound and particularly music has shaped our world for many years now, and throughout those years we've strived to invent or create new devices in which to listen to the latest songs of the day or indeed those old favourite's which can conjure memories, some emotional just from "that song". The first devices as it were would have consisted of music boxes, metallic cylindrical tubes with grooves cutaway that when spun on a needle of sorts a tinkly tune coould be heard, using the same kind of technique in that grooves were dug applied to Vinyl and then the grammophone was born, it was here that the technology had it's foundations for the music devices we have today. From those early record players through to cassette's, CD's, mini disc's all the way to our mp3 players which require nothing more than a music file to listen to your favourite tunes. We have come a long way, it used to be huge collections of records, CD's, tapes that cluttered many a home, now you can literally have thousands of trakcs on a device no larger than your finger. So it is this challenge which you can model any audio device from the 1800's all the way to today, or you can create your very own device, maybe a completely new take on the equipment that's fed directly to the brain or a steampunked record player, even an 80's twin deck stereo or all in one, the choice is yours.
Modelling Time: 60 Mins.
Prizes:
1st Place - £30 worth of 3DTotal downloadable products & a gold award badge.
2nd Place - £10 worth of 3DTotal downloadable products & a silver award badge.
Honourable Mentions - Bronze Award Badges
Above All Else Have Fun & Good Luck!

Crap starter I know but needed to turn something out quickly, i'm also aware of the headphones cutting through the CD. Will do something much better in another entry, maybe a record player or a reel to reel tape player.

try looking into some therapy afterwards or even now, don't know how severe it is or the conditions. I know from experience that a broken/pulled muscle if properly not healed can haunt you for the rest of your life
take care of your self

Are musical instruments allowed? Or just music player/recorder devices?
ClassicGamer-3DT

I suppose so, as they are a device that plays audio (depending on the musician lol)

Baratation, welcome to threedy in general and to the speedies in particular, hope you stay for lots of speedies. A great model, good hard surface skills!
About the wires, I think we have to post them unsmoothed, not even with the isolines, or at least it was that way before. Please somebody correct me if I'm wrong.
ClassicGamer-3DT
01-06-2011, 02:15 PM
Yeah your right all mesh smoothing should be turned off unless you've collapsed the geometry or made the mesh smoothed object editable and it's not permenatly high poly.

More great models and renders this week, love the feel of your second image Ocin, I can just imagine it in a 50s jazz movie scene!
viensdu - i like the reflection in your image, i take it that its from another image?
I think your second entry has an R2d2 look to it :haha:
Slayer89 - Got to love Steam Punk, i wanted to do one of those old music players with the glass "bell" jar things for my second entry, but times slipped away this week!
dantrodgers - cant fault your renders, look great!
baratation - Nice design, need one of those in the back of my car! shame you ran over on time :(
here is my entry, we bought it last month and love it! I wanted to do the remote too but had no time left :(
p.s. Hope your back gets better, i too can recommend some physio or i went on a "back strengthening course" through the docs, that really helped mine!

Hi, I modelled this beautiful radio R1 deluxe, by vita audio. I couldn't model the back part. I modelled the antenna just for the beauty render, but out of time, that is the reason why I didn't include it in the wireframes or clayrenders.

Thank you Edwiersma. Yours its nice too, the model looks clean and very close to the reference image you posted.
For the chromed material I would use a cleaner one, with more blurred reflection other than a hard brushed effect, but that is personal opinion.
