The Challenge Rules

1). Each challenge we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modeling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief can be removed and the poster disqualified.

2). You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified.

3). Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like and must include a clear and easy to see wireframe of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Wire renders/ Cell Shaded or Screengrab wireframes are acceptable. Any wireframes we cannot see correctly will be disqualified. The key is for us to be able to see the wireframes clearly to ascertain how you modelled the subject matter.

4). You MUST include the following details with each submission:

A). Software used
B). Time spent creating the model.

Any further information is voluntary but posts not containing the required information can be removed and the poster disqualified.

5). Post TWO images per entry which must be no larger than 1280x1024 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 195k.
1 image for your wireframes and 1 for your clay combined with a optional beauty render.
These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page.
Do not link to external images files. Images larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials)
will be removed and the poster disqualified.

6). The creation of displacement maps, normal maps and any splines drawn out in an external program other than your modeling software are to be included in your modeling time.

7). Time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the allocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post it as long as it's recognizable.

8). Posting the same entry twice in a challenge is considered to be double posting and will result in a disqualification. When asked to fix a previous post due to DQ or any other reason, you must fix the first post, or delete it altogether and create a new one.

9). The Winner must email jo@3dtotal.com to claim their prize.

10). Only 1st place & 2nd place (i.e. the runner up) can claim a prize.

These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions!

My favourite scene from Oceanīs 11 :D

Remarkable starta CG, I think you ate the 1/2" betting ball thingy from the roulette or something.

Oh and welcome to the 3dt Forums obliviboy, I remember my first post in the forums was also an entry for a SMC.

Nice entries everyone!

Unfortunately I couldn't do all that I wanted. I'm having some strange stability issues, so modeling right now is a pain for me. I'll still post my work what I came up with. Wanted to make it a lot better, but can't work with such unstable system.

The basic idea was to show that people sometimes play on all they have, including belongings and even loved ones. But as I said - couldn't make it.

Just about back to normal, still full of cold mind but feeling better.

A shame this week wasn't a popular choice.

Here's hoping the next SMC will attract members new and old. I'm working on the brief artwork, text and starter now.

Sorry CG. Feel bad for not entering this week, got a half finished entry that I started last week that I just don't seem to be able to find the time to finish. I'll try again next week. Glad your feeling better.

I think its more the timing over the last few weeks since its been the mad rush for finishing uni projects. That's why I haven't been able to enter the last couple. So hopefully once everyone has finished for the summer they should pick up!

I've had my model done all week, just haven't found the time to render it of and get the images together :( Had a great idea for the scene but the rendering just isn't working for me and i've had no time to do textures. I am render as we speak (well type) though so will hopefully have an entry within the next hour... fingers crossed!

Renders done. Now to compile wire image... I had my idea for this weeks entry since Sunday. I just wondered if anyone will do it. Casinos arent exactly my area of expertise, so I had to take more... "Japoish" approach :) I wonder if I will get DQ :D

I've been in lurking mode for the past 3 or 4 weeks - been doing a lot of stuff so much so I won't even name them as not to spamm the thread. I'm back, have additional 4GB of ram and 2012 line of Autodesk products on my laptop :)

Hoping to spend a lot of time on the upcoming SMC...

But before that JAPO where are you??

Hello everyone :)
Here is my "roulette" entry for this week. Smith & Wesson M&P "Long-Action" .38 from the the film The Deer Hunter. This particular gun is used in the POW scenes, not the bar at the end.
If I did not run out of time I would have fixed the cylinder and added symmetry. But most importantly, I would have added the three bullets :)

Modelled in 60 minutes in 3Ds Max 2008, rendered with Vray.

Phew just made it! Great entry Japo, very outside of the box!

I was trying to go for a dark, dingey, smokey basement poker room "back of the pub" style. Its a shame i didn't get time to do some nice textures and spend more time with the lighting but just struggled this week. If i had more time for the modeling i would have done an ash tray and half smoked cigars.

Looks like the main renders have come out darker now i've uploaded them, they were supposed to be dark, just not that dark! ;)
