The Challenge Rules

1). Each challenge we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modeling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief can be removed and the poster disqualified.

2). You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified.

3). Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like and must include a clear and easy to see wireframe of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Wire renders/ Cell Shaded or Screengrab wireframes are acceptable. Any wireframes we cannot see correctly will be disqualified. The key is for us to be able to see the wireframes clearly to ascertain how you modelled the subject matter.

4). You MUST include the following details with each submission:

A). Software used
B). Time spent creating the model.

Any further information is voluntary but posts not containing the required information can be removed and the poster disqualified.

5). Post TWO images per entry which must be no larger than 1280x1024 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 195k.
1 image for your wireframes and 1 for your clay combined with a optional beauty render.
These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page.
Do not link to external images files. Images larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials)
will be removed and the poster disqualified.

6). The creation of displacement maps, normal maps and any splines drawn out in an external program other than your modeling software are to be included in your modeling time.

7). Time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the allocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post it as long as it's recognizable.

8). Posting the same entry twice in a challenge is considered to be double posting and will result in a disqualification. When asked to fix a previous post due to DQ or any other reason, you must fix the first post, or delete it altogether and create a new one.

9). The Winner must email jo@3dtotal.com to claim their prize.

10). Only 1st place & 2nd place (i.e. the runner up) can claim a prize.

These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions!

Absolutely LOVE those tires!!

Well i've finally made the transistion i've been converted i'm now a mac owner! I'd bought a imac 21.5" 2.5GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 with 6MB on-chip shared L3 cache, 500GB (7200 rpm) hard drive, AMD Radeon HD 6750M graphics processor with 512MB of GDDR5 memory. It'll be great when it comes! I'e already had one sent out to me but the firmware got corrupted I was told it was a 1 in 1000 chance and I was the lucky winner, only had the thing a day and did that, so now waiting for my replacement.

What I saw of the imac I was very very pleased with, the speed, the display, everything in HD was brilliant.

If I ever need windows on it i'll get VMware Fusion 3 i'll not bother with bootcamp, I'd rather have windows running within osx rather than a dual boot.

Also just got a new phone..... after years of having a crappy Nokia which was about 8 years old i've got a lovely HTC Wildfire on Android :)

Have fun with you're imac, u have to tell me how it is to own one. I am think of switching myself in the near future, since i mainly use modo,maya,c4d and zbrush. but i am still a little afraid of the OS system, it seems confusing to me.

Great cow entries so far :) cvcv

ClassicGamer-3DT
17-06-2011, 07:34 AM
My first impression are great. I was a little reluctant as I wasn't sure if i'd get cinema 4d working or photoshop. And i really didn't wanna have windows on it as that was one of the main reasons i switched. So far so good, i've got C4D and Photoshop running they are mega fast loading and rendering is significatnly quicker, on my windows computer a typical scene takes 4 minutes to open, i can hardly move around in the viewport and i get 2 render buckets, on the imac it opens as quickly as i can open the scene, i can move around in the viewport seemlessly and with open gl on and i get......wait for it........... 8 render buckets!!

As for heat, it all excaspes quietly out the rear of the monitor, it does get a little warm, but that's to be expected as most pc's do. i'm really happy.... and for £999 you can't beat it.

Thanks to DaddyDoom for persuading me to change, it was the best thing for me.

Hurrah, I finally got time to enter. Fancied doing a small scene for this one so I did a henhouse (based on a trailer design I found online) with a chicken. Nothing fancy modelling wise - had to keep it simple to do the entire scene within the time.

Hello all, i'm afraid i've run into a slight problem here at home. We are currently having our house renovated and de-cluttered and the brand new imac i've purchased is lovingly back in it's box so it is not harmed. My Dell laptop is on 10% battery life and the power cable has been misplaced at the moment, so I cannot charge the laptop.

I am currently in my local library internet access typing this very message, so i'm afraid unfortunately I am unable to work on the next SMC #15!

I'm afriad they'll have to be a slight delay of a day or two (hopefully much less) until the next challenge goes live.

I apologise as this eventuality wasn't planned for.

With a little luck i'll be able to get this sorted sometime tommorow even if it means temporarily setting up my laptop in my bedroom.

Lots and lots going on here, so forgive me if i'm not around to answer any questions. It's unlikely I will be online again today, so all being well i'll see you all and answer questions sometime tomorrow.

Again sorry guys.

John.

Here is my entry, but i think i need to step it up though, there has been some really creative and impressive work for this challenge!

I actually modelled this on the first night of the comp and was hoping to fully texture it but as always never found the time!

Its an old rickety barn, i was going for the odd bits off wood and miss shaped planks to show the age and hopefully cast some interesting shadows inside.

p.s. dont worry cg life always comes first, its the way it is...
and yes i am V jellouse of your new mac! ;)

edit - for some reason my .jpeg's completely change when i up load the, the off line ones are not at all blue / green like the ones posted and the images are much lighter!
Does anyone else have any issues? are you guys using jpegs too?

edit - 2 - Ok i've changed them to .gif and i think they are better now... hopefully!
