So I came up with this hacking social media sort of fella that gets connected and chessboxes his way through the game. He might have been captured by aliens and submitted to a brain surgery some moment in his life, but heŽll come around. Watch out!

Haha, nice idea. Haven't seen a WuTang Clan shirt....in a decade! Head looks like its off to a good start in the sculpt, maybe the lips/mouth could use a little more attention tho, they're looking a "stuck on", not sure they're really flowing quite right yet.

That looks really nice, mouth looks much better, much more natural. Wrinkles and such look pretty ace.

Actually right now they are placeholders. In the initial concept the glasses do not show the eyes, kind of like the Kevin character (Elijah Wood) in Frank MillerŽs Sin City.

I am testing the normal maps. Still got some work to do. I am new to this procedure, using xNormal (http://www.xnormal.net/1.aspx).
Therefore I made a new topology for the body:

I have started to texture the character, but I am not satisfied with the result so far. Still got to add more details, and I am going to try to add a better overall feel to it.
I am using the Viewportshader by Laurens Corijn (http://www.laurenscorijn.com/viewportshader), but just got over the settings really fast and I hope to get more out of it. Now it seems that the normal map sort of disappeared, I mean the lighting is weird. The color map for the arms and heads are still very poor. Any ideas?

Looking good. However I don't like the head, as it looks a little too real. Makes me think off a childrens hospital to be frank. I'd make it a little more friendly myself.

Actually the character should be a little bit creepy (power button eyes). I have added the glasses, so it might have a friendlier touch. Later on I would like to add the glasses with a glow map, so the eyes will be hidden anyway.

Thanks for your comment, SnappedStrings! Actually when I made the concept I was listening to some Wu-Tang tracks. And there is this song Mystery of ChessboxinŽ (http://youtu.be/kl6jwab3HWk). I wanted to give the character an average-kind-of-guy look, too.

I posed the character in a more relaxed way, although the final battle position should be the one where he is sitting on top of the chess-piece.
Right now the model is at 11.166 Tris total.
