Hey ho guys and gals,
Posted a couple of teaser images in my sketch box before so decidedly I am continuing with the model.
Great fun also making a medieval model since that is one of my favorite historic eras. As of yet I am planning on making him as real as possible and also add in an emotional element both in the posture and the character himself. Him actually being there on the battlefield, a pawn in the midst of battle. Kind of...
I give you The Pawn - with inspiration from medieval English guardsmen...

Update 3
Revised the cheekbones some more. A bit ambiguous to how "gruntish" I should make him...
Also guys; what's best: BPR or Best render?

Good question!

Update 4 - Plastic Surgery and A Pair of Armored Gloves
Away with the flabby nose and in with a bit of revision as well as a new pair of armored gloves.
Now off to Salamanca, Spain, in the morrow :). Will be there for the most part of three weeks with the exception of some excursions to Madrid and perhaps Portugal, so if anyone is in the vicinity feel free to give me a call! :haha:

this is coming on pretty well - a guardsman is a good choice for a pawn. you need to be careful not to make him too much of a hero though - pawns are cannon fodder
on the negative side, you need to take a long hard look at his coat thing. its not hanging like cloth right now...

You mean the tabard (overcoat) right? If so then yes, it is not done yet :). I actually have a real one at home to take the ref from when I get back home so I will make sure it looks spot on. Funny fact about it though is that they usually have linings and such at the ends of the fabric which really twists the curves and folds of the fabric in strange ways...
Thanks for your comments! :)

The skin detail is stunning, I need to improve my sculping textures a lot...

Wil-Himura - Thanks! Well I actually still have some trouble getting all the alphas and brushes to work as I want them too (which is to say the randomizing and stamp spacing of mudbox) ;). But keep on practising! You could actually take a look at my Speed Sculpt Time Lapse (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DgXkutqSuCM) where I show some of the ways I work in Mudbox...
Kaiune 3D - Well have some thoughts about that as well... Either a hillebard (then he will be more of a guard and less of a hero) or sword and shield :). What do you think?
AlucardAssassin - Cheers man!
AlucardAssassin

Looks good! As for the weapon, I think sword and shield would look better.

I thinks a halberd would be much better. You could have a much more interesting pose.

Seems we have a clash of views on the subject, how fun ;P. Well I will have to sketch it out later to find the posture and look I want.

yep good start hulahuga, I like your concept! I expect to see more.

I second the halberd. They're way under played in CG so it'd be nice to see one for a change. I also think for some reason it suits the style of armor and the helmet of the character more. My 2 cents.
Sculpts looks good, oodles of details. Nice work.
i think this guy looks like Harrison ford or daniel quaid. Either way, its looking pretty awesom! Keep it up!

Chris_solo - Thanks! Glad you like it, will get back to it asap when I come home from Spain.
Warlock 279 - Cheers, I agree with you there. And yeah, the helmet design and clothing are basically guardsmen gear so a halberd really should suit him. Glad you like the sculpt!
Raul - I still havenīt looked towards those guys when I made it though at all ;) Funny that you think it though. Cheers man!

Nice work so far, chain mail under the arms?
+1 for halberd or spear.
Hope there will be some nice texturing.
Hope it's not too frustrating to be in holiday and receiving comments when you can't make any changes yet. xD
Keep it up when you're back Dr. Hula.

Let's get this party started!!! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sO_QntXc-c4)
Hey guys, back from Spain now. Really uplifting to see all of your comments, and I do look forward to pulling this through to the very end and across the finish line. Will put in a bit of work into this each day, but I will always be able to watch your c&c as I go on.
Now off to working on the tabard followed by boots, legs and finally the hillebard :)
EDIT:
UPDATE 5 - Tabard Rework
As promised, here is the tabard. What do you think? (and yes I see some of the wonky stuff at the edges, and I am going to straighten out some lines, but the general idea ;))

good progress, boot looks too skinny/flat on the foot part, perhaps you can bulk it up a little bit

Sure deal!
Edit: I just realized that I had gone completely overboard with the boots, will do a rework tomorrow...

Update 7 - Boot Rework and Pants (Clothing Done!!!)
Now off conceptualizing the halbard!
EDIT: Made a quick fix to the boot yet again as two parts looked a tad wonky, won't show it in this post though... ;)

Hahaha! ;P
Working on the low poly now and I have done it all except the gloves and the halberd and it is currently 1400 tris, I think I must have either done something very wrong or very right :lame:. Will probably just basically pull a subdivision on it and then refine all the edge loops so that they follow all the folds and such even more...

nice sculpt hula! cool cloth-folding

30-07-2011, 01:22 PM
Yeah, can't wait to see that halberd!
Are you doing the retopo in ZBrush? (Just curious)
hulahuga
30-07-2011, 02:45 PM
No worries ;). I am doing it topogun right now actually... Will probably do some final touches in Maya as well. Will probably take it into Mudbox afterwards to do the textures and posture, and then for the render I probably won't have that much time ;).
The halbard without textures... Will do all the holes and bits and pieces with alpha maps... (and add on those funky little things in maya probably...)

Haha, I just saw your "currently using" tag on the bottom. Should have seen it didn't say ZBrush. Mudbox is free for students, I'm planning on trying it out. I'm anxious to see how it differs from ZBrush.

It does say Zbrush... I have used Zbrush to sculpt this dude, now topogun and then Maya, Mudbox and Photoshop. ;)

Retop done!!! God that has taken a frigging long time. ;P Been sitting almost the all day with this, experienced about 8 crashes with topogun and one blue screen and I actually had to learn the program (from scratch!) whilst working ;)

Aight for some ****ING reason completely oblivious to me Mudbox has been crashing CONSTANTLY for the past two hours... Thus I missed the deadline for the final, even though my work has been done, I just can't take away the green from the posing tools nor change the pose a bit...
So this is what I got atm, (decided to go a bit more modern style in the texture ;))

haha, I probably would have voted you 1st place. Love the color scheme and the creepy Micheal Myers face pose.

*lovely*
Dude.. If you Press -insert-on the keyboard in Maya, you can set the pivot where the model will be manipulated..
I.e. Select polys up to the elbow with some soft selection going on, in rotate mode press -insert- manipulate the pivot up to the elbow joint, press -insert- again, and rotate the forearm. A neat trick to use when Mudbox or zbrush fails us.
Im sad you didn't make it in time, but what you've got came out really awesome and real ffing fast texture work :D at least finish it and post it in the finished section
tsabszy
01-08-2011, 07:08 AM
it looks great! i only miss the posing :)
it's such a shame you couldn't meet the deadline, due to program errors. i would have voted for yours..
btw it doesn't matter if you couldn't finish in time if you did finish your work and you feel satisfied with the outcome and what you learned on it, tose the only important things ;)
